The past two weeks fishing off Watamu and Malindi have been difficult with the water Temperature still being slightly too cool. Despite the cooler waters that we are facing at the moment some great Billfish are still being caught. Hemingway’s was chosen to Host the 2014 SADSAA light tackle tournament fished by Natal, Sadsaa, S.Team White, S.Team Red and Mpumalanga representing their provinces from South Africa. Over the Four days of fishing there were 17 Sailfish and 1 Black Marlin released; all caught on 20pound line class, strictly IGFA rules. Despite the smallish numbers of Billfish actually caught; there were more than double the figures raised and lost due to the difficulty of line class and rules placed in the Tournament. We would like to congratulate our lady angler of the SADSAA tournament Annalisa Smit for catching a Black Marlin estimated at 176 pounds; caught on a 20pound line which was successfully tagged and released. In light tackle terms she gets an 8.8 to one on light tackle class, which is a great achievement! Just falling short on 10 to 1 on line class. 3nd place, Mpumalanga team from the left Francois Bezuidenhout, Annalisa Smit and Herman Dickson. In 2nd place was the SADSAA team, which were always in good spirit despite the hard fishing conditions and were great supporters of our lovely bar situated right in front of the Gantry. Further congratulations go to Roy Malkeson, which I must add got away with buying a round of drinks for everyone at the Bar which is tradition at Hemingway’s and most of the places around the world for catching his 1st Marlin. His luck followed him by the free drinks being served at the Gantry sponsored by Hemingway’s at the time he rang the Marlin Bell. Well done Roy, two lucky strikes with one stone mate! On January 22nd Five Black Marlin were caught, the boats have caught everyday in the past week. Out on the Rips it’s starting to improve with some Striped Marlin and Blue Marlin showing themselves again after the heavy blows of wind we encountered over the New Years period. For the Jigging enthusiasts there have been good numbers of Amberjacks and Giant Trevally being caught out on the Mountains and Canyons.
