From the Inside Out A Monthly Newsletter from Tri-State Fellowship Welcome! Welcome to our November edition of “From the Inside Out.” This is a newsletter of happenings at Tri-State Fellowship written for our church family and their friends, neighbors, and associates. We invite you to take a look at all the exciting things that are happening and welcome you to come be a part of it all! Send us an email to receive this monthly letter electronically. Move Over By Randy Buchman – Lead Pastor AWe have a new driving law in the State of Maryland called the “Move Over” law. This relates to the requirement of drivers to move one lane to the left or right if at all possible when passing law enforcement or emergency personnel who are working an incident on the shoulder. This strikes me as obvious, and to not do so as “ignorant.” In my college and seminary years (at Dallas Theological Seminary), it was a great privilege to know Dr. Charles Ryrie – of the famed “Ryrie Study Bible.” He may well be the smartest person I’ve ever known, and was pretty much the father of the modern movement to produce and print Bibles with notes and explanations. Back around 1980, Dr. Ryrie told me one day that he had received an angry long-distance phone call in the middle of the night from an irate reader of the new King James Version of his Study Bible. The caller said that the prof had brought shame upon the Scriptures by changing the words. Doctor Ryrie tried to assure the caller that “the Holy Spirit wrote all the stuff above the line, I only wrote the words below it!” The caller persisted and demanded that Doc look at 1 Corinthians 10:1 which reads in the KJV, “Moreover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant…” So Ryrie got up and turned on a light and found a copy of the newly printed Study Bible, and sure enough, here is what he read: “Moveover, brethren, I would not that ye should be ignorant…” Forever after, this was known as “The Moveover Brethren Version” of the Ryrie Study Bible. | November 2010 | Issue 3 reach. Various professional baseball players have been guest speakers, and many softball players have given their lives to the Lord. Anyhow… back to driving laws in Maryland – ye should move over brethren, else ye should act ignorant, and receive a ticket ye must needs sign below the line! Sports Promoter Extraordinaire One of the men of our church – Mike Kelbaugh – is the guru of church sports! Mike is the President of the Washington Country Area Church Softball League, as well as the area church basketball association. Mike also headed the effort in working with the City of Hagerstown for the funding and construction of the lights at the old Fairgrounds, as well as the construction of the concession stand there. This is a huge asset for the city and is a facility that brings thousands of dollars to the community through regional softball tournaments. But Mike’s passion in all of this activity is for the Gospel to reach people who do not know Christ. He met the Lord through playing for the church softball team many years ago, and has committed his whole life to this means of evangelism. Each year, TSF hosts the dozens of local church teams for a massive banquet/out- Mike is also the percussionist for one of our seven regular worship teams, and is the owner of Kamelot Florists on West Washington Street. Pumpkin Siege / Car Show An annual Fall outreach event is our car show and “pumpkin siege.” Other years we have also had a corn maze on our extra property, but the lack of rain this year thwarted that endeavor. A total of about 100 antique and classic cars, trucks, and motorcycles filled our parking lots on October 16th. And once again we hosted a medieval-style trebuchet (catapult) pumpkin throwing competition. The TSF team defended their title with a pumpkin toss of well over 700 feet! The purpose of the event is to touch the community and build relationships through which the Gospel may be communicated. We will plan to bring it back for the first weekend in December 2011. But we do invite everyone to be with us for a grand musical celebration of Christ’s incarnation on Sunday morning, December 19th at 9:30. Ongoing Sermon Series on Dedication November 7 - November 28, 2010 “Putting More Joy in Your Marriage” Retreat November 12 – 14, 2010 Land Loan Paid Off TSF owns a total of 29 acres. An original 10-acre plot was used for the initial construction of our facility in 1996. We later acquired an additional 4 acres and house in front of the church – the ground where the lower parking lot now exists. And finally, we have just completed paying off a 2nd loan on 15 additional acres of land purchased from our dear neighbor, Lester Alban. We rejoice in God’s provision through His people to so richly bless our fellowship and position for future growth by His grace! Missional Outreach Leaf Raking at Lakeside November 13, 2010 From Hagerstown to the World On October 10th we welcomed home our dear friends Marlin and Ruth Brubaker for a visit. Marlin grew up as a teenager in the early years of TSF. For the past 14 years he has served as an engineer with HCJB World Radio – living both in Quito, Ecuador and Colorado Springs (currently). This radio ministry with 300 stations in over 100 countries LITERALLY does cover the globe! 4 TH SUNDAY EVENT AMP 4th Sunday Events for Middle School and High School November 28, 2010 Sunday Morning Worship Services: 9:30 AM Classic Tri-State & The Heritage Café Target Training Options 11:00 AM The Bridge & Target Training Options Marlin and Ruth Sarah, Emily and Laura Marlin works much with the technology end of things – especially with satellites. At times, he and his former friend from the TSF youth group – Jeff Harrer of Trans World Radio – collaborate on the technical challenges of their two ministries blanketing the world with the Gospel of Christ. As teenagers, Marlin and Jeff dreamed of serving in such a way, and God has prospered their vision into the incredible reality of serving in this special outreach. TSF is privileged to have sent many families from our church to serve around the world. 13153 Cearfoss Pike | Hagerstown, MD 21740 | 301.790.1774 | info@tristatefellowship.org | www.tristatefellowship.org
