Setting The Record Straight
On Multiple Sclerosis
(NAPSA)-Understanding multiple sclerosis (MS) can be overwhelming for a newly
diagnosed patient, and with so many MS
resources available, especially online,
it is even more confusing for patients
to know where to turn to find the most
accurate, up-to-date information to help them navigate the
disease. Further, with so much
ongoing research, information
about MS is continually evolving, adding to the challenge of
finding the most current and
accurate content.

When someone is diagnosed
with MS, both the person living with MS and their families
want answers to understand
how this disease is going to
impact them, but the vast
amount of information available makes it difficult to know
where to turn.
Understanding multiple sclerosis (MS) can be overwhelming for a newly diagnosed patient, but there
are many reliable resources available, specifically
online.
"With so many online resources
available, many of which have
out-of-date, incorrect information, and people's inclination to search
online to understand a disease, I find
myself spending a significant amount
of time re-educating my patients about
MS," said Christina Caon, BSN, MSN,
NP-C, an advanced-level nurse practitioner and assistant director of Clinical
Research at the Wayne State University
Multiple Sclerosis Center.
To set the record straight, Caon addresses several common MS questions
and misperceptions.
What is MS?
MS is currently thought to be an autoimmune disease of the central nervous
system, which is made up of the brain,
spinal cord and the optic nerves. It occurs when the body's immune cells get
confused and begin to attack the protective sheath (called myelin), which surrounds our nerve fibers and helps them
transmit electrical impulses throughout
the body. When the myelin is attacked,
it's damaged, and this interferes with
the nerves' ability to transmit messages
between the brain and other parts of
the body. These disruptions can result
in many different physical and cognitive
problems.
The exact cause of MS remains a mystery, though most agree it likely results
from a genetic predisposition in combination with either a virus or environmental factor a person was exposed to.

PAGE 4
What is the prevalence of MS?
Each week, 200 people are diagnosed
with MS, adding to the approximately
2.5 million people living with MS worldwide. Most people are diagnosed with
relapsing MS in their 20s or 30s, and
women are up to three times more likely
than men to develop MS.
What are some of the most common
MS symptoms?
Everyone with MS has a different disease
course and symptoms. The symptoms
differ in severity and fluctuate over time.
They may include blurred vision or loss
of vision, loss of balance, poor coordina-

tion, slurred speech, tremors, numbness
and tingling, extreme fatigue, diminished
mobility of the arms or legs, problems
with memory and concentration, and
bladder and bowel dysfunction.
Is MS treatable?
There is no cure for MS but there are
effective treatments available to modify
the disease by reducing the frequency of
MS exacerbations and, in some cases,
slowing the progression of physical disability. It is important to take one of these
medications. The treatment of a patient's
day-to-day symptoms is also important.
This can be done by using medications
and rehabilitative techniques, which can
improve the patient's quality of life.
Can women with MS have children?
Many women with MS can and do have
children. The chance of their child having MS is only 2 percent.
Does a diagnosis of MS mean a
shorter life span?
Absolutely not. Statistics show that most
people with MS have a normal or nearnormal life expectancy.
Is it true that people with MS cannot
work or go to school?
A diagnosis of MS does not mean someone cannot work or go to school. Because of available treatments, symptom
management strategies and ways to
make an environment more accessible
and comfortable, many people with MS
can continue with these activities.
How can I learn more about MS?
While it can be difficult to know where
to go for accurate information on MS,
there are many reliable resources available, specifically online. One of these
resources is MS Atrium, an online portal with comprehensive, up-to-date and
unbiased MS information supported by
Genzyme, a Sanofi company. The content is created in consultation with a
team of leading experts dedicated to
researching, studying and treating MS.
In addition to providing this valuable
information, MS Atrium also serves as a
guide to accessing other reliable MS resources, helping people educate themselves on the disease.

After returning to school, Hagan graduated from Stockton College with a Masters’
degree in Physical Therapy in 2000. She developed her expertise in geriatric orthopedics while working in various clinical settings that encompassed women’s
health, sub-acute and nursing homes, outpatient sports & post-surgical orthopedics, homecare and hospice.
Starting Tuesday, January 15, Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) Connie

individual one-hour sessions, daily homework practice and daily carryover exercises.
This research-based exercise plan is based on another effective Parkinson’s
speech treatment called LSVT LOUD. Both programs have a 20-year history that
has received funding from the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
Parkinson’s therapy, physical therapy (PT) and fitness are the three main components at Body in Balance. A huge selection of one-hour classes, workshops and
support groups are held regularly for members.
Hagan has one critical goal for geriatric, Scoliosis and Parkinson’s patients…to
keep them standing. She strives to strengthen the balance and gait. “We help
patients fight weak muscles to keep them on their feet,” Hagan says.

Three Simple Switches for
Better On-the-Go Snacks
#2: Switch from pre-packaged to prepared. "Preparing healthy snacks can be just
as convenient as pre-packaged ones," notes Tara. Tara suggests chopping veggies
and leaving them in grab-and-go baggies in the fridge, keeping string cheese and
low fat yogurts on-hand, and preparing peanut butter and whole grain crackers to
take on the road.
#3: Switch from butter to Country Crock. "To save on saturated fat, I suggest that
moms cook, bake, spread and top with a soft spread," says Tara. Country Crock has
70 percent less saturated fat than butter, no partially hydrogenated oils-so 0 grams
trans fat per serving-and no cholesterol.* Tara recommends trying this recipe for

TURN UP THE AC • DEANA M. KOZLOWSKI
1/12 - Borgata - Jim Breuer: Jim Breuer is an American stand-up comedian, actor and
radio host. He is most noted for his time as a cast member on Saturday Night Live and starring
in the 1998 cult “stoner comedy” Half Baked, alongside Dave Chappelle.
1/19 - Boardwalk Hall - All Stars of Hip Hop: Platinum Shows and State Farm present the 2nd Annual All Stars of Hip Hop, with Salt N Pepa, DMX, Doug E. Fresh, Big Daddy
Kane, Kool Moe Dee, Black Sheep, and Shock G. of Digital Underground featuring Humpty
Hump.
1/12 - Harrah’s - Sylvia Browne: Sylvia Browne is an American author who describes her-
1/19 - Resorts - The Spinners: The Spinners is an American soul music vocal group, ac-
self as a psychic and spiritual medium. She has made several appearances on Larry King Live,
was a weekly guest on The Montel Williams Show, and hosts her own hour-long show on Hay
House Radio, discussing paranormal issues and giving callers advice in her role as a psychic.
1/12 - House of Blues - Morrissey: As the lead singer of the Smiths, arguably the most
important indie band in Britain during the ‘80s, Morrissey’s theatrical crooning and literate poetic lyrics - filled with romnatic angst, social alienation, and cutting wit - connected powerfully
with a legion of similarly sensitive, disaffected youth. These fans turned the Smiths into stars in
Britain, exerting tremendous pull oer much of the country’s guitar based music for many years
after their breakup, and even if the group remainded underground cult artists States, they had a
fan base that slowly, steadily grew larger over the years. Indeed, a few years after the Smiths’
breakup in 1987, Morrissey’s American cult had grown to the point where he became more
popular in the U.S. than in his homeland, where he nevertheless was never far from the music
press headlines. After a quiet period around the turn of the millennium, Morrissey launched a
comeback in 2004 with You Are the Quarry, an album whose success proved that he remained
one of the most beloved figures in alternative rock.
1/12 - Resorts - Judy Gold: Emmy Award winning actress and comedian, Judy Gold is
best known as the star of her two critically acclaimed long-running Off-Broadway hit shows.
Judy’s most recent show, The Judy Show — My Life As A Sitcom just completed a 6 month
run at The D-R-2 Theatre in New York. The NY Times made it a critic’s pick and called it “Highly
entertaining! Brash, Buoyant & Infectiously nostalgic.” The Huffington Post said the show is
“Comedic Gold. A funny & fantastic ride! It’s the ultimate laughter-through-the-tears tale.” Gold
lives in New York City with her two children. She frequently tours theatres and comedy clubs
around the country.
1/16 - 2/24 (Wed-Fri, Sat & Sun) - Golden Nugget - Steve Wyrick: Steve Wyrick
has appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman, The Ellen DeGeneres Show, Vh1’s
Celebracadabra, That’s Impossible on The History Channel and on TLC’s American Chopper.
Steve and the Tuetels made history when they created the first-ever invisible chopper in front
of five thousand people on the Las Vegas Strip. Steve Wyrick, famous for his epic illusions on
Television and as a headliner on the Las Vegas Strip for ten years, is coming to Atlantic City.
Do not miss this rare opportunity to catch Steve Wyrick at the Golden Nugget with his all new
multi-media show in which he will make a full size airplane appear on stage nightly. His sleight
of hand will engage your mind and his illusions will touch your heart.
1/18 - Revel - Andy Grammer Restore the Shore Concert: A prime example of an
artist who has climbed to the top of the music industry ladder, Andy Grammer started out as
a street performer in California. Since then, he has performed on “The Tonight Show with Jay
Leno” and “Live with Regis & Kelly,” shared the stage with Taylor Swift and Colbie Caillat and
a completed a summer tour with Train. Andy Grammer is the first male pop star, since John
Mayer in 2002, to reach the Top 10 at Adult Pop Radio on his first two singles, “Keep Your Head
Up” and “Fine By Me.” “Keep Your Head Up” is certified Gold and received the BMI award as
one of 2012’s Top 50 most performed songs across all formats. Radio has enthusiastically
embraced his third single “Miss Me,” and he is gearing up for a major headline tour in 2013.
1/18 - House of Blues - The Darkness: England’s the Darkness centered around
irrepressible frontman Justin Hawkins (vocals/guitars/keyboards), who, along with his guitarplaying baby brother Dan, bassist Frankie Poullain, and drummer Ed Graham, single-handedly
resurrected the rather unfashionable sounds and attitudes of late-’70s hard rock for an unsuspecting generation. Following the demise of an earlier, conspicuously synth pop-based outfit
named Empire, the Hawkins brothers sowed the seeds of what would become the Darkness at
an impromptu karaoke session on New Year’s Eve 1999. Justin’s rapturous rendition of Queen’s
“Bohemian Rhapsody” showed them the way, and the suitably dramatic name of the Darkness
was chosen shortly after the arrival of Poullain and Graham.
1/18-20 - Borgata - Rob Thomas: Robert Kelly “Rob” Thomas is an American rock recording artist and songwriter. He is the primary songwriter and lead singer of the band Matchbox
Twenty. Thomas also records and performs as a solo artist. Thomas earned three Grammy
awards for co-writing and singing on the Carlos Santana triple-platinum hit “Smooth”, on the
album Supernatural in 1999.
1/19 - Harrah’s - Eric Benet: Eric Benét is a contemporary R&B singer with mild hip-hop
and strong adult contemporary influences. As a teenager, he performed in a family vocal group
(appropriately named Benét) with his sister and cousin. The group signed with Capitol Records
and released an eponymous album in 1992 that largely went unnoticed. Eric blazed his own
trail as a solo artist shortly afterward, signing to Warner Bros. and releasing his debut album,
True to Myself, in the fall of 1996. A Day in the Life followed in 1999; its first single, a cover of
Toto’s “Georgy Porgy,” was a moderate radio hit, but it was the album’s second single, “Spend
My Life with You” (featuring Tamia), that helped put Eric Benét on the map. “Spend My Life with
You” went to number one on the R&B charts, was certified gold, and received a nomination for
the 2000 Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group. Benét’s popularity was
on the rise, and A Day in the Life went on to earn a Soul Train Music Award for Best R&B/Soul
Album, Male.

tive for over 50 years, and with a long run of pop and R&B hits especially during the 1970s.
The group, originating from Detroit, still tours regularly as of 2012. The band is also listed
occasionally as Detroit Spinners, or Motown Spinners (for their 1960s recordings with the
Detroit label). These group names were used in the UK to avoid confusion with a British folk
group also called The Spinners.
1/19 - Trump Taj Mahal - Victor Drobysh: Starline Artist Productions present Victor
Drobysh “Hits & Stars” featuring Russian Pop Stars Kristina Orbakayte, Zara, Stas Pyekha,
Slava, Avraan Russo and others.
1/19 - House of Blues - Circa Survive: Circa Survive is an alternative rock band
consisting of former Saosin vocalist Anthony Green and members of the now-defunct This
Day Forward, including guitarists Brendan Ekstrom and Colin Frangicetto. Compared to the
sound of Green’s former group, the music of Circa Survive taps a different musical influence
for Green, who cites Paul Simon, dredg, and Björk among later artists who have more influence on his vocal stylings in Circa Survive which are comparatively less aggressive, as well
as his songwriting.
1/26 - Borgata - Rick Springfield: Rick Springfield is an Australian singer-songwriter,
musician, and actor. He was a member of pop rock group Zoot from 1969 to 1971 and
then started his solo career with his début single “Speak to the Sky” reaching the top 10 in
Australia. In mid-1972, he relocated to the United States. He had a No. 1 hit with “Jessie’s
Girl” in 1981 in both Australia and the US. He received the Grammy Award for Best Male
Rock Vocal Performance for “Jessie’s Girl”. He followed with four more top 10 US hits, “I’ve
Done Everything for You”, “Don’t Talk to Strangers”, “Affair of the Heart” and “Love Somebody”.
His two US top 10 albums are Working Class
Dog (1981) and Success Hasn’t Spoiled Me Yet
(1982). As an actor, he portrayed Dr. Noah Drake
on the daytime drama General Hospital, from
1981 to 1983 and during 2005 to 2008. In 2010,
Springfield published his autobiography, Late,
Late at Night: A Memoir.
1/26 - Golden Nugget - Dwight Yoakam: With more than 21 albums and compila-
tions under his honky tonk belt, this Singer, Songwriter, Actor and Director, paved the way in
country music with such hits as “Guitars, Cadillacs, Etc., Etc.”, “Honky Tonk Man”, “Hillbilly
Deluxe”, “Buenas Noches from a Lonely Room”, “Ain’t That Lonely Yet” and “If There Was a
Way”. In addition, he has received the Grammy for “Best Male Country Vocal Performance”
and was named “Artist of the Year” by CMT Europe.
1/26 - Caesars - Heart: Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson were the creative spark behind
Heart, a hard-rock group who initially found success in the mid-’70s, only to reach greater
heights after engineering a major comeback a decade later. The daughters of a Marine Corps
captain, Ann (born June 19, 1950) and Nancy (born March 16, 1954) grew up in both Southern California and Taiwan before the Wilson family settled in Seattle, Washington. Throughout
their formative years, both were interested in folk and pop music; while Ann never took any
formal music lessons as a child (she later learned to play several instruments), Nancy took
up guitar and flute. After both sisters spent some time at college, they decided to try their
hand as professional musicians, and while Nancy began performing as a folksinger, Ann
joined the all-male vocal group Heart.
1/26 - Boardwalk Hall - Miranda Lambert w/Dierks Bently: Miranda Lambert with
Dierks Bentley bring their LOCKED & RE-LOADED Tour to Boardwalk Hall Saturday, January
26, with special guest Thomas Rhett. Show time is 8:00 p.m. Tickets go on sale Saturday,
October 27 at 10am. This Live Nation concert is presented by Caesars Atlantic City.
2/1 - House of Blues - Grace Potter and the Nocturnals: Grace Potter & the
Nocturnals’ self-made 2005 debut album, Nothing but the Water revealed a musically
sophisticated young band inspired by the music of the late ’60s/early ’70s and fronted by a
then-21-year-old dynamo whose nuanced singing, organ playing and songwriting belied her
age. The follow-up, 2007’s This Is Somewhere, confirmed that the band had no interest in
following trends but was instead in pursuit of timeless expression as it forged its identity. On
2010’s self-titled third album, GPN, toughened by a half decade of nonstop road work, flexed
their rock ’n’ roll muscles and confirmed that they were in it for the long haul.
2/2 - Tropicana - Margaret Cho: Critically-acclaimed comedienne, Margaret Cho,
showcasing her brand new stand-up show, “MOTHER,” at Tropicana Showroom. Cho’s latest
project offers up an untraditional look at motherhood, including how we look at maternal
figures and strong women in queer culture.
2/9 - Tropicana - David Cassidy in Cassidy: David Cassidy has managed to stay
at the top of his game for over four decades, with a unique ability to re-invent himself and
adapt to numerous genres from concerts to theater, television to Las Vegas, and even actor/

singer to producer/writer/director with a demographic that crosses three generations. Be sure

2/9 - House of Blues - Bobby Brown: Robert Brown was born on February 5,
1969, in the hardscrabble Orchard Park projects in the Roxbury neighborhood of Boston,
Massachusetts. Brown had dreamed of becoming a singer ever since he saw James Brown
perform at the age of 3. He started out singing in church choir, where he distinguished himself
with his beautiful and passionate voice. At the age of 12, he formed a group with his friends
Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, Ralph Tresvant and Ronnie DeVoe. Calling themselves New Edition,
they rehearsed with a focus and discipline very rare for a group of pre-teen boys. After winning several talent shows, New Edition was discovered by producer and talent scout Maurice
Starr, who landed them a recording contract with a small label called Streetwise in 1983. That
year they released their debut album, Candy Girl, a sugary sweet collection of songs that made
the group an overnight sensation. The title track, “Candy Girl,” was highly reminiscent of The
Jackson 5’s “ABC.”

2/16 - Golden Nugget - Scotty McCreery: An American Country music singer from Garner, North Carolina. He won the tenth season of American Idol on May 25, 2011. He is the first

She received a nomination for the Academy Award for Best Actress and won her first Golden
Globe Award for her role in the film. In 1990, she starred as Oda Mae Brown, a psychic helping
a slain man (Patrick Swayze) find his killer in the blockbuster film Ghost. This performance

DOLLAR $TRETCHING DIVA$
Welcome to 2013!! By now most of you have probably thought about what you
would like to accomplish this year. If getting into shape is among your goals, we
promise you can do it in a fun, dollar stretching way. Walking is a great overall
exercise that almost everyone can do. Put on some comfortable shoes and just
start moving. The winter months are wonderful for getting outside on the beach,
Boardwalk, local parks or wildlife refuges and enjoying the peace and beauty of
South Jersey without the crowds. Walking not only helps get your body in shape.
Being out enjoying nature also feeds the soul. Add extra steps to everyday activities
by taking the stairs instead of an elevator. When shopping, park your car further away and walk to the stores. Better yet, walk to the
stores from home and take advantage of the great January sales that are going on now. January is the best time to shop for winter
clothes. Stores want to get rid of current inventory and make room for Spring fashions. If you’ve been putting off buying that new
winter coat, now may be the time to go for it. There is also some holiday merchandise still out there, so take advantage of the deep
discounts and put it away for the 2013 holiday season. And, of course NEVER EVER leave home without your coupons!!
OK, how many of you remember mom saying “Go out and play”. Well, you’re never too old to get out and play. How about getting out
and jumping rope. Yes, we said jumping rope. Many of you ladies will remember Double Dutch. So get together with some girlfriends
and have some fun. You can also jump indoors or by yourself. We aren’t forgetting the guys either. Many boxers jump rope to increase balance and flexibility. Couples can do it together to keep each other motivated. Jumping rope is a great overall exercise and
the only cost is the rope itself. Now that’s a real dollar stretching idea!! In addition, doing something that’s fun and doesn’t feel like
exercise may help to keep you from losing interest and falling back into bad habits.
Good nutrition is another important part of getting healthy and staying in shape. Nutritionist Nancy Adler, who also writes for Atlantic
County Magazine is a great source for practical ideas to get control of your diet. Nancy offers great tips and strategies each week in
her column, as well as delicious, easy and nutritious recipes that will not break your budget. Thanks Nancy!
Please write to us and let us know how you plan on getting or staying in shape this year. We would love to share your ideas with our
readers in future columns. Email us at dollarstretchingdivas@comcast.net or mail to PO Box 7086, Atlantic City, NJ 08404.
See you next time.

• Most Financially Secure Casinos: ...................................................... Borgata
As you may note in this writer’s nom de plume, “The Wizard of Odds,” the
odds part is extremely important to your pocketbook. To improve your
chances of becoming a winner you should always take the odds into consideration when engaging in any type of gaming, casino or otherwise.
Here is a case study to illustrate the point: A certain casino chain in town,
with six casinos if you count the Wild, Wild West and the old Claridge, charges
onerous and usurious rates for drawing out your own cash from their ATM
machine to risk at their slot machines. This case study involves three of their
Boardwalk casino properties.
Let’s say your gaming budget for a trip is $100.00. Instead of bringing cash or
going to your local bank’s ATM you go to Caesar’s and get “hosed” for $5.99
plus extra bank charges. (Note: You can save this fee if you use the PNC ATM
hidden on the ground floor of The Pier by the Boardwalk entrance next to the
escalator.) Bucking the odds in a casino is tough. Since a tenth of a percentage point is very important to your pocketbook your $100 “poke” has already
been reduced by about 60 tenths.
The biggest blunder you could make is to “mosey” down the Boardwalk to
their Showboat property which consistently maintains the tightest overall slot
odds in town and perhaps the entire country! Instead, you opt to go into
their Bally property and play perfect strategy on one of their 6/9 $1 Jacks or
Better poker slot machines (on the main casino floor close to their front desk.)
This slot bank is on a linked progressive meter and starts off at $4,000.00 for a
Royal Straight Flush. When the meter reaches $4,500.00, or more, it is a very
sweet bet. When compared to Showboat’s odds you have improved your
chances of playing longer and perhaps becoming a winner by more than 100
tenths of a point.
To top it all off, in any of this chain’s casinos in which you choose to play you
are building award points towards the best casino loyalty club in town – The
Seven Stars casino promotional rewards program.

Never Too Old To Graduate
(NAPSA)-Helping adult college students complete their degrees could begin
with asking their birth date.
Age influences how adults manage the stress of obtaining a bachelor's degree, according to a new report by Apollo Research Institute. Different support
systems-from students' workplaces, their personal circle or the school they
attend-also had varying effects on their decision to stay enrolled.
The stakes for reducing the dropout rate are high. Over half of all adults in
four-year bachelor's degree programs quit before graduating. With 8 million
U.S. adults pursuing higher degrees-a number projected to rise 20 percent by
2018-they're today's fastest-growing category of collegians.
"Higher education is critical to helping workers gain the skills they need to
stay employable over a long career," says Dr. Tracey Wilen-Daugenti, vice
president and managing director of Apollo Research Institute. Up to 3.7 million jobs may go unfilled because U.S. workers lack the required education
and skills.
More than 4,400 adult students participated in the Apollo Research Institute
study to identify college-related stress factors that could interfere with graduating. Among the most common challenges that students face are anxiety and
stress over the expense of college, not spending enough time with friends or
loved ones, and worrying about whether they are smart enough to complete
the coursework.
Students from different age groups-Baby Boomers, Generation X and Millennials-had distinct reactions to school-related stressors. After cost-a chief worry
for all three groups-Baby Boomers' second-highest cause of stress was worrying about their intellectual ability to do coursework, while for Gen Xers and
Millennials, it was missing out on time with friends or family. Millennials were
also most likely to worry that college-related stressors would lead them to
drop out.
Understanding how adult students cope with academic stress
can help them reach their education and career goals.
departments is most effective in convincing adults to finish school. By contrast, workplaces were graded less effective in supporting adult learners. "Because 63 percent of adult students work while enrolled, employers can play
an important role in helping employees to map their educational goals to their
career advancement," adds Dr. Wilen-Daugenti.
Adults of all ages can cope with college-related stress by making a long-term
financial plan, building a personal support network, and using academic resources, such as writing labs and online tutorials, to fill learning gaps. Among
the rewards: Graduates can expect higher lifetime earnings and greater career
options than nongraduates.
