After Hurricane Sandy devastated the Vagabond Kitchen & Tap House in Atlantic City, new owners Tom Harris Jr. and Elvis Cadavid undertook the challenge to create an exciting new neighborhood eatery. Both restaurant industry veterans have years of experience. After months renovating and rebuilding, the fresh, friendly restaurant and bar reopened on March 22. The building near the entry into Atlantic City has long been a fixture. I remember it as Teddy's West End Lounge in the 1970s; over time, it changed names and owners. Harris and Cadavid recognized the property's appeal. Harris says, "We not only rebuilt the inside, but also added attractive exterior enhancements like our hand-painted awnings and a new 60-car parking lot. Formerly a messy grass lot, the new space is built on a solid foundation and covered with 70 tons of stone. We plan to build a wraparound deck, for up to 10 tables, by July 4th week so we can introduce 'sunset specials' to the menu." They maintained the original floor plan of four separate areas, keeping the large central bar as the focal point of the front entry room. On the wall of the small side 24-seat dining room are three interesting picture frames, filled with hundreds of Harris's ticket stubs from sporting events, shows, etc. night. He was my kind of experienced employee...accommodating, sharp and focused on getting the job done. He and Harris suggested an appetizer sampler and then other items. We enjoyed our three appetizers for different reasons. The delicious $8.99 pound of wings, served with three different sauces, were different from most places. Other restaurants often serve wings by the number, which can be skimpy. The Vagabond serves their meaty wings by weight. My Crab Bread ($14.99) combined jumbo lump crab meat, white wine and garlic butter on crostini bread. I loved how the wonderful wine flavors soaked into the bread. Finally, Tequila Shrimp Bangers ($10.99) in a tangy sauce were served over a salad with raspberry vinaigrette dressing. For our main meal, my three Ahi Tuna sliders ($13.99) came perfectly rare, as I had ordered. Norman selected a signature $10.99 Hot Mess Burger with mushrooms, a demi glaze sauce and smoked gouda cheese. It had a pungent flavor, and next time he'll try the onion version. The delicious burgers are one of Vagabond's most popular items. For $1.99 extra with any burger, try the hand-cut Belgium fries. You may order them with one of three seasonings and/or eight sauces. We wanted them plain, but chose the avocado ranch sauce. No dessert for us-who could manage that-, but Dan claimed the superstar chocolate layer Irish Car Bomb Cake ($5.99) has Irish cream liqueur in it. Maybe next time because we'll definitely return. Walking straight ahead through the transition room, also used for meals or buffets, is the larger main dining room. Its beautiful picture window The Vagabond is proactively promoting their bar. Everything has been redone in an interesting olive green and black color scheme, with wood paneling covering the lower walls. Marbleized granite tables complement these muted shades. Throughout the restaurant, there are sentimental photos of the Atlantic City of yesteryear on the walls. Enjoy dance music from the live DJ on Wednesday nights, test your smarts while playing Quizzo on Thursday at 8 p.m. or listen to live performers on Friday and Saturday nights from 8 p.m.-midnight. The jukebox also provides great background music. Harris doesn't mind, saying, "There are no days off, only the days you don't clock in." While the menu has several entrees, they clearly focus on interesting casual fare. Borgata In last week’s column on “Casino Marketing 101” the “Wiz” opined about marketing practices of many A. C. casinos. What follows is a more advanced course (#102), offered in good faith, to those who give a darn about our most valuable, and vulnerable, industry: Don’t Follow the Herd. The current rage in casino town is raucous nightclubs and bars. In fact, one casino is up to eighteen of them. How many of the young attendees gamble? Some smart casinos should go after seniors who have the time, inclination, and money to play. The same goes for casino bussing. One casino drops a program and others follow. Dumb! Invite Couples. Would-be marketing gurus should come down from their ivory tower and manage by walking around (MBWA). If they open their eyes they would see a majority of playing patrons are couples. When a casino fails to include a spouse in their promotional event we don’t go. In fact, if they make a habit of it we do not return either. Progressive Systems Work. It is not only high progressive meters on slots and “bad beat” bonuses on live poker that are attractive to potential customers, but so are ever-increasing cash-back or comps based on a continual series of play. For example, one group of casinos had a promotion where you received 5X, 10X, 15X, and finally 20X times bonus for four successive days of play. This is particularly attractive to locals who do not have to travel so far to participate. The best ever of this type promo was the old “Bally Bowl” football pool which lasted over the entire NFL season. (The “Wiz” won $4 K). Player’s Times Are Not Your Time. Many of the would-be marketing gurus in various casino “Sales Prevention Departments” work banker’s hours (9 X 5, weekends off). They tailor casino promotions accordingly as if casino customers keep their hours. They end promos too soon, close player’s clubs and restaurants too early, and generally don’t give a hoot about customer’s needs. All they have to do is ask. The only salvation here is that those dummies who get an “F” in casino marketing 101 and 102 will soon find themselves out of a job. P.S. Much kudos to Resorts and their great entertainment maven Tom Cantone for their outstanding free Jimmy Buffet concert on the beach at Margaritaville last week! We need much more of this! But no matter where a home's water originates, from a large municipal supply to a private well, a whole-house water filtration system can make it better. With the right whole-house water filtration system, homeowners can access the best water possible throughout their home. About whole-house systems A good whole-house water filtration system consists of several components. Multiple filters reduce sediments and other solids (dirt, silt, rust) that can create cloudy, dirty water. The system can also reduce chlorine taste and odor, and address specific water issues like acidity, hardness or contaminants. A system's digital display provides system status, measures water used and, in some cases, can automatically connect with the service organization to call for service. Finally, a reverse osmosis system in the kitchen offers even more filtering of drinking water. A local water expert like your Culligan Man is knowledgeable on local water supplies, and uniquely suited to recommend a wholehouse water filtration system that makes sense for a homeowner's needs. Benefits of a whole-house system There are many benefits of a whole-house water filtration system. Some are more noticeable than others: • Clear, odorless and better-tasting drinking water is available throughout the home from every tap, your refrigerator, even your icemaker. • Hair color treatments may last longer and look "richer" because chlorine and other additives have been reduced. • Glasses and dishes are free of water spots, and washed clothing is soft and not scratchy, saving money on fabric softeners. • Treated water lathers better, saving money on soaps and detergents. • Because you have bottled water quality right at the tap, you can reduce the cost and environmental impact from small-pack bottled water. Other less noticeable, but very important, potential benefits include: • A longer life for water-heating appliances by reducing sediment and hard water buildup inside the units • Potentially reduced water and energy bills • The positive environmental impact of reduced water, energy and detergent use. That's just the beginning. A local water expert like the Culligan Man can provide more information about all the benefits of a whole-house water filtration system to a homeowner, assess that homeowner's specific needs, and recommend a system that makes sense. atlantic county MAGAZINE Learn More: For more information, contact your local Culligan Man for help or visit www.culligan. com/en-us/d/homes/whole-house-waterfilters/. CATCH OF THE WEEK Matthew Erine of Margate couldn't have a cuter crabbing team than twin seven year old daughters and his wife. They had a blast on the bay! Team Chorney of Manhattan tried their hand at crabbing (609) 822-6819 9211 Amherst Ave. • Margate, NJ ~ Just Ten Minutes From Ocean City! FISHING REPORT John Schaivo of Deptford, fishes Margate al least every Saturday, with his buddies caught these on mackerel. All types of fishing phenomena took place this week and the explanations are as varied as the occurrences. Minnows or killies, the preferred bait for flounder fishing are largely MIA in South Jersey. Explanations range from “they are in the Margate swimming pools because the tide rose above the pools during hurricane Sandy,” to “they are in the woods ʻcause the tide was so high they washed inland.” Nonetheless, anglers and their teams continue to catch flounder, blues, weakfish, blue claw crabs and striped bass in the bay behind Margate using a variety of baits normal for this time of year. Mike and Wendy Sherman of Margate caught a 21 inch flounder off the Margate beach on a green buck tail and green “Gulp.” Rich Long of Margate also used green “Gulp” to catch three flounder drifting within a stoneʼs throw of the dock. John Schiavo of Deptford, a Margate Beach Thorofare “frequent flyer” nabbed two- three pounders and a seventeen and a half incher with his son and buddies. His bait of choice is salted mackerel fillets. Another fan of green “Gulp,” Ron Brown and his children Mark and Kim, caught four keepers, with one at four pounds. Bill Mendenhall Sr, and Jr., and Skip Van Lew of Dowingtown, Pa. stayed true to their weekly catch with three at the three pound mark. Matthew Erine of Margate took his wife and twin seven year old daughters on a bay adventure complete with crabbing and swimming off the boat. Likewise, Dan Chorney of Manhattan hosted three generations of men in his family on a crabbing excursion. Michael Mosca of Ventnor and nine year old Ethan Vogin also of Ventnor, caught two different rays, in the forty to sixty pound range. There is always high adventure on the bay! Have a licensed electrician inspect your home's wiring and advise you as to whether it will safely handle air-conditioning units. • Make sure your equipment has the label showing that it is listed by a recognized testing laboratory such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL), ETL SEMKO (ETL) or Canadian Standards Association (CSA). • Look for breaks in power cords, plugs or connectors before plugging in and turning on equipment. • Always plug an air conditioner into a grounded (threepronged) outlet. If an appliance cord plug doesn't fit an outlet, have a qualified electrician replace the outlet. • Avoid overloading outlets. Plug only one high-wattage appliance into each receptacle outlet at a time. For more electrical safety tips, visit www.esfi.org.
