– SAASA – SOUTH AFRICAN ANIMAL SANCTUARY ALLIANCE Plettenberg Bay Our mission is one of education and understanding, and to meet these objectives, we strive for all guests who have visited any of our sanctuaries (Monkeyland, Birds of Eden and the Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary) to leave with a greater understanding of the primates, birds, apex cats and wild animals in general and to understand the threats and challenges they are facing. One of our main areas of focus is to educate the public about the adverse effects of keeping wild animals as pets, in terms of both their physical and psychological health. OUR MISSION IS: - To encourage understanding of and a commitment to the conservation of wild animals - To communicate the need for healthy natural habitats; and recognition of wild animals need for independence from people, their natural environment and its component resources - We are committed to reaching and engaging the largest number of people possible to enable them, through knowledge and understanding, to develop the motivation and skills to make informed choices about their lives in relation to the wise use of natural resources around them MONKEYLAND is the world’s first free-roaming, multi-species primate sanctuary. It is currently home to over 500 previously captive apes, monkeys and lemurs including gibbons, langurs, howler monkeys, vervets, sakis, capuchins, squirrel monkeys, ringtailed lemurs and black-and-white ruffed lemurs. Our visitors will also experience the 128m suspended canopy walk! An unforgettable experience… BIRDS OF EDEN is the largest single span free-flight aviary in the world, encompassing an area of 2.3 hectares of forest and ravines with over a kilometre of walkways. It is home to over 3,500 birds and over 200 different species of previously caged birds which include several species of parrot, turaco, waterfowl, finches, crane, hornbill and many more. Together with a great variety of birds, you may also spot goldenhanded tamarins, giant fruit bats and blue duikers, making this an experience unlike any other.
