BREEDERS SUPPLYING BIRDS - 2013 EASTERN DISTRICTS AUCTION Barbara Fisher (SA) Belcher & McKellar Blair & Poole (TAS) Borg & Skivington C & B Gearing (WA) Caulfield Family G & D Armstrong (WA) Geoff Edwards (SA) Geoff Russell (QLD) Geoff Tonkin Graham Barlow (QLD) Greg O'Connell Heath Chasemore Home & Howard (TAS) Ian Hunter J & J Fletcher (TAS) Jan McMahon (WA) Jeffrey Leong John & Silvia Bucior (NSW) John Ennis John Scoble (NSW) Kevin O'Callaghan (QLD) Lloyd Richardson Murray & Spink Peter Glassenbury (SA) Richard Bucior (NSW) Rowe Brothers Sheppard & Flanagan Tim Philpott (TAS) Troy Holmes (SA) Wilson & Hoadley BREEDER PROFILES (NOTE: PHOTOS ON EDBS WEBSITE) Breeder Profile: Jim & Judy Fletcher (TAS) The Budgerigar has been very much a part of our lives as Judy and I have been breeding and showing Budgerigars for 44 years and both had them as a hobby in our early teenage years. We have followed the National Shows around Australia each year since 1988 and only missed one show due to my illness in 2006. I passed the inaugural ANBC’s judging examination in 1990 and was the Judges Committee Coordinator for quite a number of years and from July 2012 ANBC Secretary. I have previously had National judging appointments in 1992, 1996, 2004 and 2011. We breed approximately 200 young birds a year with our main line stemming from Garry Gazzard with Stephen Mow and Alan Rowe lines linked. After the completion of each breeding season we carry a stud of approximately 350 birds. Currently for 2013 to date from 3 Shows have won all 3 Young Bird Diplomas and 2 Champion Bird of Show awards with a team of birds from our stud. Our most memorable award would be the National Show at Rockhampton 2010, when our Normal Light Green Cock won the normal green class and the accolades we received for the quality of this bird. He and his siblings have now become the key bloodline in our current line of birds. The varieties we breed are: Normals, Cinnamons, Spangles, Yellow Face (English & Aust.) Dominant Pieds Lacewings and Clearwings. Judy and I are very proud of what we have achieved with our birds over many years as the quality of the bird is very much consistent throughout the stud. Breeder Profile: Jan McMahon (WA) Based on Chidel and Gearing bloodlines Jan’s Dominant Pied Stud sports great head feather – a much sought after feature on a prolific breeding family of birds. Involvement in the administration side of the hobby often prevents Jan from exhibiting but when encouraged to do so she has won many top awards including the South West Championship and her National results include 2nd & 5th 2010; 2nd, 6th and 8th in 2008; 4th 2005; 9th 2009. Breeder Profile: Troy Homes (SA) After re-joining the hobby in 2005, Troy Holmes has consistently had birds represented at the National level for South Australia. In 2007, Troy won the Normal Green, Normal Blue, Yellow-face and Grey-wing classes at the SA Inter-branch, as well as the Best Opposite Sex in Show, and the World Budgerigar Organisation (WBO) award for Best Young cock. In 2008, Troy ran 1st and 2nd in the Cinnamon class at the SA Inter-branch, with two splitLacewing brothers, and 3rd in the Grey Green class. In 2010, Troy won the Clear-body class at the SA Interbranch, and went on to finish 2nd at the Nationals in Rockhampton. In 2011 and 2012, Troy did not exhibit for personal reasons. His stud of birds is based primarily around Gary Gazzard and Wally Capper bloodlines. Breeder Profile: Barbara Fisher (SA) Barbara is a Judge and has been breeding birds for over 30 years in SA and has represented SA on many occasions at ANBC level. Health reasons will see her leave the hobby this year and her entire stock will be auctioned mid year which will involve many variety birds including Violets and Australian Yellowface as well as many Crested. Birds in auction are typical of breeding stock that will be sold. Ring Code SA is simply BSSA Club code. Breeder Profile: Tim Philpott (TAS) Tim was lucky enough to win a pair of Gazzard birds back in 2005 when he was a novice breeder. Then In 2008 purchased 4 birds of Gary which are the foundation of his stud today with a number of them going to Nationals . 2012 1st normal grey .2nd spangle double factor 4th normal grey green 10th lutino and other top 10 placings over the last 4 years Breeder Profile: Geoff Edwards (SA) Geoff Edwards is an Open Breeder in SA and since rejoining the fancy several years ago has progressed quickly to being a force in this state. Judicious purchases from Henry George and Plunkett and Tasi have assisted his rise in the ranks. He consistently aims to breed large long birds with good feather and fertility and has been highly successful in all shows he has exhibited in recent years. Living at Port Augusta some 300 kms from Adelaide limits his direct involvement however when he presents birds for ANBC selection many are been selected for state representation in a wide variety of classes. Breeder Profile: Cec & Brenda Gearing (WA) Cec started in 1952 with blue series birds in the UK. He migrated in 1958 to Kalgoorlie, then moved to the Whetbelt, but always kept budgerigars. After retiring, with his wife Brenda's support, he was close enough to Perth to exhibit. Finally in 2002, he was persuaded to enter birds in the Nationals - see attached list of major results. In 2008 he was Coordinator for the Nationals in W.A. He is a senior judge, as is Brenda, and is Judges' and Colour & Standards Coordinator, WABC President and since 2001, President of the South West Budgerigar Club. Breeder Profile: Rowe Brothers (VIC) The Rowe brothers started breeding exibition budgerigars in 1976 as kids and were foundation members of the former west Gippsland budgerigar society which is part of the now Gippsland buderigar society, and were breeding and showing untill 1980 when other intrest took over. The partnership was reformed in 1992 with John and Greg and a couple of years after David followed and the 3 brothers joined forces and became the now Rowe brothers partnership. All brothers breed the normal varieties and specialise in a minor variety with John albino's ,Greg lacewings and David recessive pied and blackeye yellows. Since 1992 they have had much success on the bench both locally and at national level. Their success includes at national level 3 wins 1 second and 2 thirds as well as 18 Melbourne shield wins and 7 diploma wins. All 3 brothers are totally dedicated to the breeding of quality budgerigars and are fortunate to be able to share this interest together as brothers. Breeder Profile: Murray & Spink WEB: www.msbudgies.com Vic & David have been breeding & showing in partnership for about 13 years in the Open section with elevation to Champion last year. Prior to forming the partnership both breeders had been involved for many years as individuals from Juniors back in the 60’s through to Open for many years, with the usual time out for work & family commitments. The stud is slightly different to many other partnerships, as there is one bird room and flights where the hobby is shared. The varieties covered include most of the normal’s plus, Lutino, Double Factor Spangle, Clearwing & Blackeye. The stud is made up of several leading bloodlines, with an emphasis diversifying families to keep fertility levels up. The aim is to strive to get depth of quality across all varieties and be able to compete regularly at Champion level. Pedigrees for all birds available on day of Auction. Photo’s on website – msbudgies.com Breeder Profile: G & D Armstrong (WA) Our birds are mainly based on Mannes, Topliss and Binks lines. Exhibition budgerigar breeding is about improving on what you’ve got in your aviary. We work very hard to get our pairings right and receive Top awards in our State over many years. We do not advocate breeding neither close nor do we advocate buying in excessively but out crossing is still very important. To build a stud of similar style birds needs a stud of birds of similar prepotency regards to style, to constantly be going forwards. Their strengths are Top End Overall Potency followed up on showmanship where they don’t slouch but stand well off the perch exhibiting excellent show feather which is the main three points we breed for as Per the Australian Standard as viewed by myself. Our Birds are always noticed at major shows Australia wide. We have been awarded 4 National Winning Ribbons since 2002. We have also been unlucky and beaten to the post on many occasions at National level. Our wins were: Once in the Spangle class Twice in the Spangle Double Factor class and once in the Hens class. We have been rebuilding our stud for 6 years now after a bad altercation with wrong products fed to our stud and feel shortly we will be on the podium again! Along with other outstanding aviaries Australia wide, our birds have been purchased and bred to produce youngsters that are showing outstanding results on the show bench. Our strength lies in our Spangles and Spangle Double Factors but we also breed quality Normal, Opaline, Cinnamon wing, Yellow face Mutant 1, Danish Pied, Lacewings and Dominant Pied. The latter three, we are still developing to have the same traits as the Spangles exhibits. We are still concentrating on and always will so that our birds have the top end “Saddle Bag” look which is very apparent in these birds above. Mr. Gerald Binks from England calls it the “Bison Look” but I, being Australian have looked at Horses with the saddle bags over the back of the horse to hang down either side. I hope you can see the comparison. To be able to achieve a national winner, we believe there is a standard that must be adhered to. Australian National Budgerigar Standard is the one our stud follows as for the requirements of Type, Colour and Markings. So our top ends and also all of features of our keep birds are adopted year in, year out are always pointing to all the features desired. For example; many budgerigar breeders always bred for blow. To have a budgerigar on a show bench constantly blowing his head feathers, then that is very rare and believe me, a judge cannot wait around all day waiting for a bird to “Blow”! However if you breed a bird to have long desired feather on its head and also as described in the Standard going down the back of the bird in a continuous graceful sweep and then also have feather and body shape as per requirements of the Standard regards to type, then you have a beautiful winning bird. The feather which is nicely apparent around the back and front of the neck I refer to as Chook feather. (So next time you look at a Rooster neck feather and you will see what I mean.) Many National winning Budgerigars have this feather ideal! (Style of our birds in photographs above depicts these qualities). The breeding strength come from our hens as they are strong and healthy when selected for breeding and on many occasion there are full nest of fertile eggs which are duplicated sometimes by 3 on occasions in a breeding season. We do not stress our birds however, and if in condition and want to carry on breeding I am obliged not to get in their way. All our birds are medicated once a year and for 45 days only, where there immune system is freshened. We using only one medication and do not believe birds need anything else if the condition are right in the aviary.
