Alpha Chi FCB Spring 2015 Newsletter
Theta Kite Alpha Chi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta • Established at Purdue University in 1915 • Spring 2015 Alpha Chi Turns 100 ow would it look to see one hundred candles glowing on a tiered cake on Saturday the 23rd of May? Can you see it in your mind’s eye? I see the flames flicker and feel the glow of candlelight. While the gala will not include one hundred candles, it will offer you the warmth and bright eyes of hundreds of your sisters. The warmth of their friendship will far exceed that of any kindled fire. We have much to celebrate and celebrate we shall. Please see page 3 for more about this glorious and once-ina-lifetime event. H We have given ourselves–our present and our future–a very special birthday gift: a successfully executed Century of Sisterhood campaign that has resulted, to date, in more than $1,096,871 raised. Together, we have exemplified the motif of sisters helping sisters in a way that was only dreamed of just a short time ago. Kudos to our campaign co-chairs Kay Murphy Yeomans ’64 and Ann Fawcett Murphy ’72 for their relentless optimism. Kudos to each of you who have helped make this campaign a ringing success. One of the gifts you will take away from the centennial celebration is a journal that captures the history of the Alpha Chi Chapter, lists the events of the weekend, and records the $70,000 Challenge Met ur kites continue to soar. In September, four Alpha Chi Thetas joined together on a challenge, offering to match dollar-for-dollar every donation made by December 31, up to $70,000. Sisters responded generously. We were so close on December 31 that we extended the deadline and within two weeks, we met the challenge. O history of this momentous campaign. Donors will be recognized, as will classes whose donor participation is at 50 percent or more of its members. We invite you to challenge your pledge sisters to help your class reach this mark. Our mortgage is due in July. Without our generous flow of giving, that date would be a fearful one. Because of your generosity, we happily are exploring the granting of a new mortgage, a mere fraction of the amount of our current debt. A special message to those of you who have the ability to accelerate the timeline of your pledge payments: sending your gift by the end of May of this year further increases what we can do for the chapter in the future by applying your entire gift to the mortgage today. Would you give this opportunity some thought? Gather up your memories and come join our celebration. I hope to see each of you in May. Loyally, Mary Lincoln Campbell ’64 Alpha Chi Facility Corporation President (734) 516-8337 Campbell@edfvc.com Thank you to those four generous sisters, Nancy Hayes Gill ’53, our lead donor, along with Nancy Duff Morton ’58, Nancy Schwein King ’58, and Barbara Dye Thayer ’49, in memory of her sister, Nancy Dye Beck ’57. And thank you to all who answered their challenge and brought us so much closer to our $1.25 million goal. The Century of Sisterhood campaign has now raised $1,096,871 from more than 600 sisters. The chapter house mortgage comes due in July, and with your help we will be reducing it to a very manageable amount. If we make our goal, we could eliminate it entirely! If you haven’t yet made a donation, please join us by mailing the enclosed pledge form or donating online at www.alphachithetas.org. Loyally, Kay Murphy Yeomans ’64 Ann Fawcett Murphy ’72 Judy Bernet Evans ’64 Helps Pay It Forward any Alpha Chi Chapter alumnae will be familiar with the name Judy “JB” Bernet Evans ’64. A loyal fan of all things Theta and Purdue Boilermakers, JB spearheaded the 2011 Big Theta Reunion with Marilynn Bottomley Dammon ’66, which brought five pledge classes from the 1960s together for a reunion at 607 Russell Street. M JB says that her mother, Mary Jane Bernet, Alpha Tau, was a driving force behind her attending a college where she could have the experience of living in a sorority house. Mary Jane remained close friends with many of her Theta sisters all her life and exposed JB to the lifelong connection of sisterhood. JB earned a bachelor of arts in interior design from Purdue. After several years working across the nation as an interior designer, she returned to the University of Cincinnati to earn a bachelor of architecture degree. She is a registered architect and certified interior designer. Living in the Theta chapter house exposed JB to women with a variety of interests and backgrounds. She recalls the pivotal moment that started her on her interior design career path. “As a pledge, I walked into the room of Barbara Hamm Parker ’62 and she had about 75 different colored pencils on her desk. I remember asking her about them, and she explained that she was an interior design major. I thought, that’s for me. I promptly changed my major and never looked back.” (Continued on page 2) Theta Kite 2 Some of Alpha Chi’s new member class share the Theta spirit in front of the house. CHAPTER CONTINUES TO EXCEL Alpha Chis Show Strength in Recruitment, Philanthropy, and Academics T he Theta women of the Alpha Chi Chapter are overjoyed to be back under the roof of 607 Russell Street and are ready to start another eventful semester containing academics, leadership, serving our community, and striving to uphold the four points of the kite. strive for the best when it comes to grades, and it’s always wonderful to see that hard work pay off. On October 25, we welcomed 37 new members into this amazing sisterhood with a wonderful initiation ceremony. They are a group of very loyal, valued, and scholarly women and we are so excited for them and their experiences with Theta. I know they will do great things throughout their membership. Our sisters completed a total of over 1,500 service hours in our community with a wide range of activities. Favorite places to volunteer include: walking dogs at the local animal shelter, playing with kids and helping them with their homework at the local Boys and Girls Club, and acting as a mentor to a child with a disability at Pete’s Pals. We also had over 25 girls participate in Purdue University Dance Marathon, an event that lasts for 18 hours and raises money for Riley Children’s Hospital. CHAPTER WELCOMES 37 NEW MEMBERS MORE THAN $10,000 RAISED FOR CASA We held our annual Theta-Fiji Grill-Off with our brother fraternity, Phi Gamma Delta, in our parking lot on October 5. We are amazed to have raised more than $10,000 for such a great cause and to have the support from the rest of our Greek community here. All of these proceeds go directly to the Tippecanoe County CASA and we still have a member in the house who is directly involved and keeps us updated with what the money is doing. We are hoping to get more girls involved with this incredible organization. STRIVING FOR ACADEMIC SUCCESS Our chapter GPA was 3.34, which made us once again number one in the rankings among our fellow Panhellenic houses. The Alpha Chis always ALPHA CHIS IN THE COMMUNITY Our chapter is incredibly excited to be celebrating our 100-year birthday in May. The planning is underway. Knowing that our chapter has been around for a century shows our strong reputation on campus. The Alpha Chis are constantly living the values of the kite and pushing ourselves to be better. I feel so blessed to have the opportunity to lead this amazing group of women and have no doubt that we will continue to build a positive Kappa Alpha Theta legacy. Loyally, Katie Jackson ’12 Chief Executive Officer (317) 489-2263 jacks243@purdue.edu Judy Bernet Evans ’64 Helps Pay It Forward (Continued from page 1) Over the years, JB’s pledge class has remained close, planning reunions and trips together. JB admits that prior to planning the reunion, these trips were the only connection she had with Theta, but after reconnecting for the Big Theta Reunion, she and others from that reunion realized the need for more Facility Corporation board members. “We joined as a group, which has made the work fun and more like a little reunion when we go back for meetings five to six times each year,” JB said. “We often take in a football or basketball game when we are there. I hope other Alpha Chis will decide to join the Facility Corporation board—it is possible to contribute no matter how far from Purdue you live.” The capital campaign has been the logical next step for this motivated group of women. “We knew how desperately funds were needed for the mortgage and to update the first floor spaces. Alpha Chi alumnae were willing to take care of it for those of us who lived there in the ’60s, so now it’s time to pay it forward.” “My mother was right,” JB said. “It was a wonderful experience living in the chapter house with 67 sisters. I want to guarantee that experience for all Purdue Thetas.” JB lives in Hendersonville, N.C., and remains an avid Purdue basketball and Cincinnati Reds baseball fan. Judy’s daughter, Kattie, son-in-law, Seth, granddaughter, Francis (3) and grandson Bennett (7 months), live in Venice, California. You can contact JB at jbernetevans@gmail.com. KAPPA ALPHA THETA 3 Come Celebrate Alpha Chi’s Centennial Centennial Contacts Reservations and Event Schedule Linda Markins Sorensen ’60 sorensenwl@comcast.net (765) 714-1845 an you believe that our centennial weekend is less than three months away? Now is the time for you to prepare to celebrate! You should have received your formal invitation in the mail in early February. The beauty of the invitation will be mirrored by the celebration itself. We hope each of you will be able to join us. C Marcia Erickson Weber ’63 meweber48@gmail.com (765) 532-0313 It is going to be an eventful weekend from the moment you arrive. On Saturday 607 Russell Street will be a busy place, starting with the morning walk for CASA and the Alpha Chi Educational Foundation, a buffet lunch, the opportunity to renew our chapter vows, a display showcasing our own Alpha Chi artists and authors, and a tea featuring a wonderful fashion show of dress styles through the decades. The highlight, of course, will be the gala dinner at the Purdue Union on Saturday night. Each guest will take home an engraved keepsake and a centennial journal. Marilynn Bottomley Dammon ’66 is putting together a history of the Alpha Chi Chapter along with some wonderful photographs. The journal will also include the weekend’s agenda of events, testimonials, plus our Century of Sisterhood campaign donor list and a page recognizing those pledge classes that have reached the 50 percent class participation level. It will be a piece of history. Friday Night Reunions and Contacts Beth Heis Sammons ’03 beth.heis@gmail.com Emily King Connor ’03 eaking06@gmail.com At Theta’s National Convention, six Purdue Thetas held up a banner to highlight Alpha Chi’s upcoming centennial celebration. Our idea is to publish the list of Alpha Chi links so that anyone in any class will have a go-to sister for information and planning. Some women may not know if anyone else they know will be attending, or where their class plans to gather for a Friday night reunion dinner, or how to answer the question, “What should I wear?” An easy way to contact other sisters will be a big help! In the past we referred to an Alpha Chi link as a chair or a leader that appeared to indicate a lot of work. We think the concept of linking is more in keeping with the intent of offering your name and email as a way to help us all link up. Send Alpha Chi photos for slideshow to: Ruthie Crane Utti ’62 tennisqutti@aol.com Judy Bernet Evans ’64 and Marcia Erickson Weber ’63 are greeted at Homecoming by Morgan Sprecher ’12 and Kyle Kazanjian ’13. The actives will be helping with the centennial, just as they were at Homecoming, where they were busy at both doors greeting returning alumnae and giving house tours. They had nametags, a special letter from an active, and Theta cookies for everyone. We would like to challenge all classes to try and reach that level. The centennial journal will have a page recognizing the classes that have reached the 50% or greater level as of April 30, 2015.
