BUILDING BETTER LIVES 2012 SOMERSET VALLEY YMCA ANNUAL REPORT A LETTER FROM LEADERSHIP Dear Members, Volunteers, Staff and Friends, We are extremely proud of what we accomplished in 2012, a difficult year in so many respects and one that brought about many challenges. As an organization that stands for youth development, healthy living and social responsibility, it is our privilege to be able to serve our communities, no matter what the need. OUR MISSION THE SOMERSET VALLEY YMCA IS A MEMBERSHIP ORGANIZATION THAT SERVES THE COMMUNITY BY PROMOTING PHYSICAL, MENTAL AND SPIRITUAL HEALTH IN A SAFE AND FRIENDLY ENVIRONMENT. EVERYONE IS WELCOME. OUR VISION THE SOMERSET VALLEY YMCA WILL BE A STRONG, VISIBLE AND DIVERSE ORGANIZATION THAT PROVIDES PREMIER COMMUNITY SERVICES TO BUILD HEALTHY SPIRITS, MIND AND BODIES IN THE COMMUNITIES WE SERVE. Amazing things are happening here at the Somerset Valley YMCA. As a 503C non-profit, we have always opened our doors to all and never turned anyone away based on their inability to pay. This year, a catastrophic storm swept through our state and left devastation behind. Superstorm Sandy did not bring pain to our organization; it allowed us to show the community who we are. We opened our doors and provided thousands with food, showers, power and the comfort of being with other people in a time of tremendous stress. The privilege of serving our community for days and weeks after the storm truly brought pride to our Y. We hosted a diverse community that was engaged and safe at the Y and developed relationships that likely never would have occurred without this storm. I can only hope that we no longer need floods, hurricanes or blizzards to let our community know we are always there for them. The Somerset Valley YMCA is here to help build better lives in our community and we need your help to do so. Sandy gave us an opportunity to live our cause of strengthening our community in difficult times, but there are many other ways the Y supports the community. We don’t just provide care for children while their parents go to work, we teach them social skills and prepare them to succeed in life. We’re not just offering senior citizens a place to be active and social; we are giving them lifeenhancing services. Our swim team is not just the winningest Y team in the state, it teaches over 400 kids confidence and self-discipline and allows them to experience the joy and satisfaction of reaching a goal. We are working hard to meet the demands of our communities today and we will act with great intention in 2013 to ensure your Y continues to be socially responsible, to improve the health and well-being of our neighbors and nurture the children of our communities. Your community partners, Andrea Thorne, Board Chairwoman Paul Kieltyka, Chief Executive Officer SOMERSET VALLEY YMCA 2012 ANNUAL REPORT 3 2012 FINANCIAL STATEMENT STATEMENT OF FINANCIAL POSITION 20122011 Cash & cash equivalents $ 172,540 153,766 Accounts & pledges receivable 86,516 20,113 MEMBERSHIPMEMBERS Unemployment reserve account 67,478 66,840 Prepaid expenses & deferred bond costs 98,987 85,550 Assets restricted to scholarships and repair 0 53,307 Land, buildings and equipment 4,330,826 4,371,987 Total assets 4,756,347 4,751,563 CORPORATE/COMMUNITY1,664 YOUTH1,405 TEEN/YOUNG ADULT 468 ADULT935 FAMILY4,778 SENIORS349 STAFF598 Accounts payable 72,165 51,248 Accrued expense and other liabilities 516,184 410,298 Capital leases payable 180,789 199,382 Notes, and mortgages payable 2,529,510 2,555,097 Total liabilities 3,298,648 3,216,025 Total net assets 1,457,699 1,535,538 TOTAL 10,197 STATEMENT OF ACTIVITIES Revenue 2012*2011 Grants, contributions and special events 287,143 263,258 Membership dues 2,405,435 2,253,310 Program fees 3,853,618 3,556,032 Total Revenue 6,546,196 6,072,600 Salaries & related staff expense 4,246,142 3,987,527 Professional fees & contract services 495,981 511,253 Program supplies & media 298,556 286,099 Occupancy 755,390 654,577 Depreciation 393,633 374,900 Interest/Finance Charge 184,543 204,084 National dues & other 106,605 90,447 Total Expense 6,480,850 6,108,887 $ 65,346 CHILD CARE $198,170 CAMP $40,090 AQUATICS$13,345 MEMBERSHIP$52,038 TOTAL Expense Net Surplus/Deficit FINANCIAL SUPPORT AWARDED IN 2012 (36,287) *excludes one time, non-cash charges totaling $93,473 for the July 2012 EDA bond refinancing; and a non-cash expense of $48,212 for an unrealized loss on an interest rate swap $303,645 GROWING STRONGER TOGETHER THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY “As a teen, I played basketball at the Y, and as a Dad, I brought my sons. But for me, the most perfect example of the Y mission was evident after Superstorm Sandy. I saw people supplied with food, shelter, showers, toiletries, towels, power for their laptops and phones — and most importantly, the open arms of lovely Y people ready to assist anyone in need. In all the years I was fortunate to be a Y member, the sum total of my experience was captured in visits to the Y after the storm.” “For me, the Y is people caring for people.” • Strong Kids campaign kicks off to help the Y have a greater community impact •G ymnasts gain pride hosting our first gymnastics meet • • Read Across America instills a love of reading in our Child Development Centers • Swim team participants accomplish goals and gain confidence as they win third state championship title MARCH •V olunteers from Merck & Co. were the first of many groups to donate their time for facility improvements FEBRUARY JANUARY MAKING AN IMPACT IN 2012 SOMERSET VALLEY YMCA 2012 ANNUAL REPORT 5 HELPING INDIVIDUALS REACH THEIR POTENTIAL “I did my first somersault at the age of 3 at the Y, and loved gymnastics ever since. My Somerset Valley YMCA coaches saw the potential in me and helped me grow. I competed on the state and national level and was captain of my high school gymnastics team. Through the Y, I learned not only the skill to be a good gymnast, but I developed self-esteem and leadership. “My Y coaches believe in me. My coaches gave me confidence and taught me to always go for what They are like my family.” you want in life.” “More than a class BUILDING HEALTHY, CONFIDENT AND CONNECTED PEOPLE — It’s people staying healthy together.” “I’ve been taking deep water exercise with Y instructor Judy for 6 years. Recently, I underwent knee replacement. I sailed through the surgery and was back in the water in three short weeks.
