SCC Success Stories
“Somerset Community
College is a great asset for
small town Kentucky. It gave
me a great transition to UK
for my engineering degree.
I was well-prepared for the
program when I got to UK. I
developed relationships with
faculty and classmates that
still remain today.”

“At SCC, the personal
interaction with faculty and
staff provided me with the
academic preparation I needed
for UK. The support and
guidance I received helped me
to succeed and enjoy a fun,
exciting, and rewarding career
as an electrical engineer with
ExxonMobil in Houston, Texas.
I am very thankful that I started
my college career at SCC and
for the positive impact they had
on my life. SCC is a great place
to start your career as an engineer!”

Course Spotlight:
CAD 293: Special Projects
This course was developed for the PreEngineering curriculum and is taught in the
Alton E. Blakley Building on SCC’s Somerset
Campus. It provides an exciting opportunity
for students to experience
“real-world” engineering
applications and problems
related to their preferred fields
of engineering. Students are
tasked with the responsibility of
analyzing community requests,
determining possibilities
and designing innovative
solutions. Students gain
practical experience
with advanced scanning,
CNC, fabrication, 3D
printing, and design
software technologies.
We complement this
experience with another course where guest
host speakers from each engineering specialty
assist students in exploration and determination
of which field is the best fit for their interests
and skills.
Many courses are available online.

and the University of Kentu
have teamed up to prepare
students for careers in engineering
Somerset Community College and
the University of Kentucky have
teamed up to prepare students for
careers in engineering. Students
completing their Associate in Science
degree at SCC with a focus on PreEngineering will be granted automatic
admission into the engineering
program at UK.
Requirements:
Maintain a 3.0 GPA.
Apply and be accepted by UK.
Job Outlook:
According to the U.S. Bureau of
Labor Statistics (BLS), employment
for Electrical/Computer/Electronic
Engineers (in that order) will
experience a 4-6 percent growth rate through
2016. Over that same period, overall engineering
employment should grow about 11 percent, due
in large part to sharp growth in the environmental
engineering sector. The average engineer salary is
$66,000 (www.simplyhired.com, 2012).
UK Engineering Majors:
• Biosystems
• Chemical
• Civil
• Computer
• Electrical
• Materials
• Mechanical
• Mining
Students should consult with an advisor to
determine which areas best suit their interests.
Financial Assistance:
Academic and need based scholarships are
available at Somerset Community College.
Students completing the A.S. degree
focused in Pre-Engineering at SCC will be
considered for all need based financial aid
program assistance at UK and are eligible
to apply for the Engineering Transfer
Scholarship or the Trustees Scholarship.
