Our Convention chaired by Terry Waith and co-chaired by Jane Whiteman was a resounding success thanks to all the hard work that so many of our wonderful Dogwoods did. Our own Nola Hawkinson, an extremely talented artist, graciously did our art work for this convention and it was beautiful! So many people commented that it was a great convention, elegant, beautiful and so well done. Give yourselves a big round of applause. I am so proud of all of you. And the awards!! Dogwood did it again with so many awards being given to our district. Very well done. We also have 13 clubs of excellence, and a lot of certificates of appreciation for all that you are doing in support of Garden Club of Georgia. We have restored the Blue Star marker at Fire station 21 on Roswell Road in Atlanta; and even though the Buckhead Men's Club is no longer part of GCG, they are continuing to support us in this endeavor. This is an 18-year-old marker that was installed by Indian Hills. Our clubs have been so involved in a variety of activities: tea parties, water conservation, pollinators, community involvement, flower shows and fundraising. We will be doing our Bulb Sales again in a few months, so please support this fundraiser, and you will be hearing from Carol Martin soon! We are also selling, as a fundraiser, our beautiful Garden Passion tote bags for $8 including tax. These will be available at our next Board meeting in August. Kathy Henry is busy with her garden clubs working on the Penny McHenry Hydrangea Festival and our District meeting with more information to follow. Please support our district by attending this very important meeting. We had a spectacular turnout last year. Please keep doing everything you are doing. We are definitely Dynamic Dogwoods! CONGRATULATIONS, JANE! >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Ladies' Garden Club 125th anniversary invitation Virginia Lassiter The Ladies' Garden Club will be celebrating its 125th Anniversary May 19, 2016, at the Georgia Museum of Art in Athens from 5:30-7:30 pm. We would love to invite Dogwood Dialogue members to this free Gala Event. As you know, this club began the garden club movement in the United States in 1891; and we would love to have all clubs feel welcome to share this momentous time. Dogwood District Newsletter Spring Issue Page 6 SPADE AND TROWEL GARDEN CLUB, CARROLLTON Betty Daniel Our garden club in cooperation with the Carrollton Parks and Recreation undertook a project to clear invasive species along a walking trail in Carrollton. The City of Carrollton is in the last year of completing a 16-mile trail that circles the town. It is a 12-foot wide concrete path with bridges and tunnels through forests and fields as well as along streams. This 22-million dollar project is a joint venture between the City and The Friends of the Greenbelt Foundation. Many areas of the trail go through terrain that has been overgrown with invasive species. One particular area along a creek is known as Hay's Mill, the site of an old mill, with lovely rocky outcroppings and rushing water. Spade & Trowel members worked in this area which is a favorite spot along the trail. In March we had two work days during which we cut down and/or poisoned privet, elaeagnus, ivy and briars as well as poison ivy. Twelve members were present each day and accumulated a pile of cuttings that took two dump truck loads to clear which the City did for us. We hope to continue additional clearing with fall or winter work days. All of the workers were amazed at the amount of work we had accomplished. The photos below show the area before and after work, as well as members at work. Most gratifying was the site in the final picture where children were already playing in the once impenetrable area. Dogwood District Newsletter Spring Issue Page 7 HISTORY OF COTTAGE GARDEN CLUB Rosie Davidson The Cottage Garden Club was organized in 1954 and joined GCG in 1955 with 25 members. The club’s purpose was to “stimulate among amateurs the knowledge and love of gardening, the protection of trees, plants, and birds and the encouragement of civic planting”. The history of this club and the scrapbooks may be found in the Cherokee Garden Library. The Cottage Garden club was associated with Rich’s Garden Centre where the club took classes in flower design and entered flower shows at Rich’s. Through this connection, they learned that Mr. Walton McElreath had given his home on Peachtree Road to the Historical Society and the garden club volunteered to help keep up the grounds. When the Historical Society moved to its present site, Cottage went with them and has been volunteering on the upkeep of the grounds ever since. One of their earliest jobs was to prune the ivy on the front lawn of the Swan House. When they all broke out with poison ivy, that particular job was passed on to professionals. Over the years the club has participated in many Flower Design courses and visited a variety of gardens. In 1988 the first Atlanta Merchandise Mart was opened with a Gala Flower Show. Rita Olden and Gene Wood entered a class called “Garden party in a gazebo”. Their husbands hauled furniture. They had a handmade table and a beautiful flower arrangement for the centerpiece. They placed second after a Professional from Rome Ga. Other flower shows followed including entries into Horticulture Classes at shows. The club hosts a variety of speakers including artists, silver experts, and flower designers. There is one living original member of this club, Gene Wood, which is remarkable! As the ladies have aged, programs have included speakers talking on personal safety. Dogwood District is so proud of clubs like Cottage Garden Club, and we are very grateful for their membership in the Garden Club of Georgia. BLUE STAR MARKER Recently the Blue Star Marker at the Fire Station on Roswell Road was completely refurbished. Left is the before photo. Right is the refurbished marker. Beautiful! Dogwood District Newsletter Spring Issue Page 8 ROSWELL GARDEN CLUB PROJECTS The Roswell Garden Club has been busy all year with various projects and fundraisers. Early February, members participated in the Roswell Going Green Expo, providing ideas and hands-on projects for parents and children: how to enrich the soil with shredded newspaper and other ways to “go green” in the garden; how to decorate clean small rocks with glue and glitter; how to make flowers out of colorful tissue paper; and how to make Tussie-Mussies using recycled artificial flowers and greenery from a thrift store. All materials were reclaimed from members as well as thrift stores. All these projects were a big hit with the approximately 50+ attendees. Chairman Carolyn Herndon, Dottie Hartford, Gloria Nardecchia & Mary Linn RGC held a Downton Abbey Garden Party fundraiser on March 16, 2016, in the Roswell Adult Rec. Center. This event involved all RGC members and staff of the Center. Over 115 guests were treated to a beautiful, flower-filled room, delicious food, a historic clothing display, and a dancing group for entertainment. Everyone enjoyed the event. Members dressed in housemaid black clothes with white aprons or as the “family” in beautiful 20’s attire. Dogwood District Newsletter Spring Issue Page 9 Roswell Garden Club, continued . . . Members served wine at GCG party On Saturday, April 16, 2016, as part of the Roswell Azalea Festival, the Roswell Garden Club held a special presentation by Charles Andrews on “Native Azaleas.” Approximately 26 members and guests attended the event. Mr. Andrews was a very informative and interesting speaker. RGC members sold “pass along plants” and “Native Azaleas”. Guests listen to Mr. Andrews Charles Andrews, Pres. Debbie Vann, Gloria Nardecchia & Smith Director Chuck Douglas Dogwood District Newsletter Spring Issue Page 10 BUDS ARE POPPING UP! COME SEE THE FLOWERS AT THE HYDRANGEA FESTIVAL IN DOUGLASVILLE! Spring has arrived! Plants and flowers are beginning to bud and bloom. Douglas County gardeners are working their flower beds in anticipation of the 9th annual Penny McHenry Hydrangea Festival on June 4th - 5th. The Festival’s Near Standard Flower Show is one of the highlights of the weekend and is organized and sponsored by Ama-Kanasta, Sweetwater, and Town and Country Garden Clubs. The Near Standard Flower Show is co-sponsored by the Douglas County Master Gardeners and is held in the atrium of the Douglas County Courthouse, 8700 Hospital Drive. “America, the Beautiful!” is the selected theme for the Flower Show as it appropriately reflects the Festival’s purpose of fun, and represents the theme Hydrangea, ‘Blue Wave’. The Horticulture Division of the Flower Show will feature entries in 67 classes of flowers, shrubs, trees, ferns, herbs and more. Over 500 horticulture entries are anticipated. The Design Division will feature table and tray designs with floral pieces in 6 classes, and will celebrate American holidays. The Flower Show will also feature Special Exhibits, including a Youth Design Division with entries interpreting phrases from the speeches of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Educational exhibits will include an exhibit on the Blue Star Memorial Highway markers, and one on the landscape design process for the new Military Honor Garden at Hunter Park in Douglasville. There will also be 3 classes of Artistic Crafts where entrants will decorate Red Flyer wagons, trophies, and cowgirl hats! Details about the Flower Show can be found on the Festival web site at www.PennyMcHenryHydrangeaFestival.com. The Near Standard Flower Show is one of the numerous Festival activities that also include miniature gardens; original scarecrows in the Master Gardeners’ vegetable garden; tours of private gardens; the Hydrangea 5K run; a juried festival marketplace, art exhibits, and much more. Ama-Kanasta, Sweetwater and Town & Country Garden Clubs say – “Come join us June 4-5, 2016!” Dogwood District Newsletter Spring Issue Page 11 LOUISE HOWARD PARK The Louise Howard Park is a welcoming green oasis, nestled in an Atlanta neighborhood adjacent to the Beltline/Path, and only a five-minute walk from Piedmont Hospital and the Shepherd Spinal Center. The Park was once the home of the Louise and James Howard family. The Trust for Public Land (TPL), in collaboration with the City of Atlanta, purchased the property in 2005 and arranged for the demolition of the house, pool, and tennis court, as well as for the necessary grading work to prepare the land for public use. After completion of this work, the property was conveyed to the City of Atlanta with the stipulation of maintaining and preserving it in perpetuity as a public green space. The Cherokee Garden Club took part in the City’s development of a Master Plan. The Club was granted the responsibility of maintaining and beautifying the lovely terrace and its surroundings, which overlook Tanyard Creek and were original to the house. The Collier Hills Civic Association assumed responsibility for the remainder of the Park. Cherokee Garden Club began its work with a massive clean-up of debris and invasive plants. Following the directive of the Master Plan, which stated that the Park remain a passive garden, the Club decided against any installation of playground equipment or fields for sports. It focused instead on developing a serene space for rest and rejuvenation. The Collier Hills Civic Association has overseen the construction of a small picnic shelter in the Park funded by Park Pride and neighborhood contributions. A grant has provided for a Little Free Library in the Park, which consists of a wooden box resembling a large birdhouse, painted bright red and secured on a pole about eye level, containing pass along books from neighbors and friends. Future park project ideas include the creation of a pollinator garden by Cherokee Garden Club that will attract butterflies, bees, and birds to the Park. The Club also plans to install signage to identify and educate the public about significant native plants and trees, including a large 100+ year-old Liriodendron tulipifera (tulip poplar) as well as the historic relics in the Louise Howard Park. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Branching Out Breakfast! Nancy McWilliams The Magnolia Garden Club recently participated in the Trees Atlanta fundraising event – “Branching Out” – a breakfast held at Cherokee Town Club, to celebrate Trees Atlanta’s future with a $5 million fund-raising campaign. Representatives of the Magnolia Garden Club designed and assembled table centerpieces for the breakfast. Tall blooming Quince branches (Branching Out!) were the dramatic focal point of the centerpieces with white Hydrangeas and Queen Anne’s lace as accents. Trees Atlanta is one of three philanthropies supported by the club. A check was presented to Kate Conner with Trees Atlanta as a contribution towards their fund-raising campaign. Members of the club also attended the breakfast. Our members were recognized and thanked for creating the beautiful centerpieces. It was a really fun project and a very worthy one!
