Teach Students Personal Safety!!
During school, many young children will find themselves in a position where they are responsible for their own
safety and security. For many, this will be the first time in their lives that an adult will not be watching over them as
they walk to and from school. Most children will adapt well to their newly acquired independence and will not have
any problems. Others, however, will not be so fortunate.
Many children are injured each year as a result of accidents while traveling to and from school. Some children are
also annoyed by adults or older teenagers, and a very small number are actually abducted and/or physically harmed.
As a parent, it is your responsibility to provide your children with enough knowledge to get them to and from school
safely. Please take the time to discuss safety issues with your children. Talk about these issues now instead of waiting
until after something happens.
Here are some suggested topics for discussion:
•
•
•
•
•
•
•
Teach children how to anticipate and avoid potential hazards and dangers. Prevention is always the first and
most important element of personal safety and self defense. This is especially true for children because most
children are too small to physically overpower an adult or older teenager.
Take an interest in your children's daily travels and activities. Map out safe, well-traveled routes for your
children to follow. Don't allow children to take short cuts or make unnecessary stops along the way.
Encourage your children to travel with other trustworthy children. Make a point to get to know who your
children are with. Write down their names, addresses and phone numbers, and familiarize yourself with their
parents whenever possible. If you allow your children to visit a friend's home, meet the family first to make
sure you are comfortable with the supervision and the environment.
Teach your children to obey all traffic safety rules and regulations. Make sure you set a good example for
them.
Teach your children the "tricks" that strangers may use to get them into cars or follow them to other areas.
These tricks may include offers of candy or money, asking for help in finding a lost pet, asking for directions
and then pulling them into a car, or saying they were sent by a parent to pick them up. Parents and children
should agree on a "secret password" in case parents have to send someone else to pick them up.
Make sure your children know what to do if they are confronted by a stranger. Children should keep their distance from strangers and not allow strangers to get close enough to grab them. Generally speaking, children
should be taught to say "no" to a stranger's request or advance. Children should quickly get away from the
stranger, and should tell a responsible adult what happened.
Teach children the difference between "good touching" and "bad touching", and encourage them not to be
afraid to talk about these issues. Make sure they know that "bad touching" can be committed by someone
who may not be a stranger.
$250 REWARD
The Cat Hollow Board is offering a $250 reward for information leading to the arrest and
conviction of the individual(s) responsible for
the damaged sprinkler heads on O’Connor and
Avaranche that occurred in July.

Landscaping Projects In Cat Hollow
LANDSCAPING REPORT
September/October 2005
We have all benefited from the sporadic rainfall throughout this summer and it is a
pleasure to see the neighborhood lawns staying greener than usual. Judging the
yard of the month winners has been an agreeable challenge with so many residents
taking a pride in their front gardens (see winners below).
The entrances to Cat Hollow at Great Oaks and at 620 have been very colorful with masses of zinnias in
bloom. The median end caps and the borders of Bobcat also enjoyed the weather.
We have made considerable progress improving the turf at the 620 entrance though this was spoiled to
some extent by traffic cutting the corner. This will be taken care of when the road is eventually widened
but in the meantime stakes have been placed there to protect the grass. The remainder of the grass improvements are on hold as we renegotiate the Landscaping contract with competing suppliers.
There has been some unfortunate damage (see panel below) to sprinkler heads which only adds to our
irrigation problems. The system is large with 2500 heads that extend throughout most of the neighborhood. Our water supply is rather chalky and calcium deposits require continual maintenance and replacement of equipment. However we are committed to extending irrigation that will allow us to plant out more
of our common areas and further beautify the neighborhood.
Some homeowners have gone ahead and taken care of trees and limbs that were impacting the concrete
fences, mainly along O’Connor. This is a very important job and will save damage and costly repairs in
the future. The situation will be reviewed in the fall and we will be working with homeowners and contractors to provide individual estimates for repairing any existing damage.
Towards the end of the school summer break there was some graffiti on fences which we are in the process of cleaning up. Additionally we continue to clean up after people who leave Yard sale signs in the
street and notices taped to posts on our corners.
Your landscape committee has welcomed a couple of enthusiastic new members, Kim and Lori
Filiatrault, who, together with Bill Mattei, Casey Kennedy and myself are embarking on some new and
exciting projects for the coming year.
CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR YARD OF THE MONTH WINNERS!

As I write this, it is still approaching the century mark in
temperature. “When is it going
to end?” we all ask. Just remember that the Longhorns
always have their season opener when it is hotter than
blazes each year, so this year’s temps aren’t so unusual.
But, never fear, autumn will be here soon and with it, the
winding down of season’s activities in the landscape.
While you are kicking back and exhausted from the
summer, drag out that yellow pad and pen and make
your “in the garden” TO DO list.
1. Look for chinch and brown patch in the landscape. Chinch problems typically appear at the
edges of a turf area (but not always!) and brown
patch begins as a circle of brown turf which gets
wider and wider.
2. Look for grub damage in the lawn also. This
can also appear as a browning area. It might be
confused with a dry spot. If you pull
up a section of grass with your hand
and the whole section seems to come
free with no roots, it is probably
grubs.
3. Continue to water deeply and infrequently.
4. Add mulch to planting beds to help
conserve water. A 2” layer is sufficient. Use the shredded pine mulch or
even a layer of compost works well
also.
5. Fall is an excellent time to aerate the
lawn. Go over the turf a couple of
times in opposite directions. For example, go back and forth parallel to
the street, then after completing this,
go over it again but perpendicular to
the street.
6. Aphids have been treacherous this
summer, but as the leaves on trees and
deciduous shrubs are about to drop,
no need to treat just now.
7. Discontinue severe pruning of shrubs
in late September. You don’t want to
encourage new succulent growth just
before winter.
8. If you plan to add Bermuda seed to your turf areas, do it prior to September 15. After this time,
the nights are beginning to cool and the seed
won’t successfully germinate.
9. Fall flower planting is upon us! Mums and Petunias are great for October and November.
Plan on settling in Pansies, Dianthus and Snapdragons in early to mid October. You can also
add some Stock and Alyssum for additional
color.
10. Save your dormant pruning for after the SECOND freeze. It is tempting to cut back perennials early because they are getting a bit ragged.
Don’t prune them back to the ground until after
the are really, really dormant!

CHECK WITH YOUR INSURANCE COMPANY
YOU MAY SAVE MONEY WITH OUR NEW
FIRE INSURANCE ISO CLASS 2 RATING!
Update on ISO and how it affects homeowner insurance rates
08/01/2005
There is some confusion circulating as to when the new
insurance rates for customers in the Sam Bass Fire Department/ Williamson County ESD #2 take effect. Let
me take a moment to shed some light on this. On July
29th we received a letter from ISO stating they found a
Public Protection Classification (PPC) 2 was appropriate.
They gave us the opportunity to protest our classification
if we thought it was unfair and gave us a deadline of August 1st to state our reasons for protest. We thought it
was a fair classification and did not protest.
On July 29th we received another letter from ISO stating
they would forward their PPC Class 2 recommendation
to the Texas Department of Insurance (TDI). On August
3rd we received a letter from TDI stating they approved
of the PPC Class 2 rating and that this rating would take
effect January 1, 2006.
This allows insurance
companies appropriate
time to adjust their fee
schedule and some have
already done so. If you are
still being billed with an ISO PPC Class 6, and have it
reduced to a Class 2, you should see a reduction in your
fire insurance premium of about 18%.
All insurance companies have a deadline of January 1,
2006 to adjust their rates. I hope this helps to clarify
when new insurance rates will take effect.
Please feel free to contact us if we can be of any assistance.

County News
By Williamson County Commissioner Lisa Birkman
TAKE A HIKE THIS FALL
Williamson County offers a variety of hike and bike
trails for county residents. The Brushy Creek Regional
Trail, consisting largely of crushed granite, is approximately 3 miles in length and extends west from Great
Oaks Drive parallel to Brushy Creek Road and terminates near Parmer Lane. Brushy Creek MUD’s Shirley
McDonald/Creekside Park, which includes a duck pond,
playscapes, restrooms, a pool and more are on the eastern
end of the trail. Progressing westward, Fern Bluff
MUD’s Meadows Park, with a large playscape and restroom facilities, is approximately one mile from Great
Oaks Drive. At the western end of the trail, the City of
Cedar Park’s Brushy Creek Lake Park provides a variety
of recreational activities including a children’s waterscape, a small lake, several large pavilions and more.
During the beautiful Texas fall days, you might want to
enjoy the trail with your family, friends and/or pets!
The county is in the design phase of building a county
park along the trail, as well. Champion Park will be approximately 35 acres located adjacent to the creek and
will include a large pavilion, parking and fishing areas.
Expected completion is in approximately 24 months.
Additionally, the county is planning to extend the regional trail in both directions. Going east from Great
Oaks Drive, Phase II of the trail will continue approximately one mile. It will include drinking fountains along
the way as well as a connection to the Stone Canyon
neighborhood. Construction should begin shortly and is
expected to be completed in about eight months. Going
west from Parmer Lane, Phase III will extend the trail for
approximately three miles and end at Twin Lakes Park,
located adjacent to Highway 183. Construction of Phase
III is expected to begin in late spring of next year and
take approximately 18 months to complete. Upon completion of Phase III, the trail will connect Cedar Park to
the edge of Round Rock and will be approximately seven
miles in length.
For more information on county parks and trails plus
other county issues, visit the county website at www.
wilco.org or contact the Parks Department at 260-4283.
Additionally, monthly updates on county events and issues are available with the county’s new electronic newsletter, The Wilcounty Line. To subscribe, go to the
county website home page.
Lastly, my office is available to help you with any
county issue and we can be reached at our new phone

Home Security Inspections
Please call 943-1353 to arrange for a
free home security inspection by the
Williamson County Sheriff's Office.
You can arrange for a time for an officer to come to your home and inspect
your property. Because the officer is
certified by the Texas Commission on
Law Enforcement Officer Standard and
Education, he is trained in home security techniques and may suggest security improvements. The officer can also
file a report of his findings with the
Texas Department of Insurance, which
may qualify you for as much as a 15%
reduction in your homeowners insurance premiums.

WHAT CAN YOU DO TO
STOP CRIME IN OUR
NEIGHBORHOOD???
Neighborhood Watch
Neighborhood Watch operates under
two principles:
1. Neighbors getting to know and
watch out for each other, and
2. Neighbors watching out for each others property as though it were there
own.
The participants make their neighborhood a safer place to live by adopting a
more observant attitude, and, as a result, become more aware of strange
cars, persons, or circumstances. This
will not take a lot of time, and soon
will develop into a daily habit of becoming more aware of what is going on
in the neighborhood.
If you would to help set up a
Neighborhood Watch program in Cat
Hollow, talk with neighbors and friends
to see the interest level in the area to be
watched, then call the Williamson
County Sheriff's office at 943-1353 to
ask for help from a crime prevention
officer.
