What is Rotary?
SURF CITY ROTARY CLUB
Greetings!
Welcome to the Surf City Rotary Club of Huntington Beach’s 8th annual “Splash” fundraiser!
Thank you for joining us tonight and supporting our charitable activities. We are here to
enjoy a wonderful evening with friends, and to raise money for our Rotary Club projects.
Tonight we are honoring the Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley as our premier
charity. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington Valley does so much to enrich the lives of
young children in our community. We are proud of our long standing partnership with this
wonderful organization. Surf City Rotary Club is affiliated with Rotary International so we
help with international projects in addition to our local projects. Rotary’s motto is “service
above self ” and our members are dedicated to improving the lives of others through our
service projects. We offer an outstanding opportunity to give back to your community. Your
support of our fundraiser makes all our projects possible. We appreciate your generosity and

ROTARY IS FAMILY. If you’re looking for a reason to join Rotary, there are a lot of great

better always involves a lot of laughter and good times. And, just like a family, we count on
each other for friendship, fellowship, and support. When you see people each week and work

2014 International Service Projects
THAT MAKE A DIFFERENCE
For over 30 years, the Surf City Rotary Club of Huntington Beach’s members have been
sharing their hearts with this community and the world. Surf City Rotarians have changed
lives - have saved lives through projects listed below and many others:
• Supported water projects in Mexico.
• Provided prosthetic limbs for people in
Bolivia.
• Provided a 15-passenger van to Corazon
de Vida, an orphanage in El Faro,
Mexico.
• Provided ShelterBoxes for international
disaster relief.
• Supported StoveTeam International, a
project to provide efficient stoves that
save lives and forests.
• Supported polio
eradication worldwide.

“I enjoy serving the community and getting to hear new, interesting speakers at our

One of the best things about Rotary is that when we see
a problem in our community, we do something about it!
Here are some of the ways that we’ve worked together to
help make our local community a better place this year:
• Provided shoes and socks for over 200 less
fortunate school children.
• Coordinated a food distribution program to
help disadvantaged families from the Boys &
Girls Club who depend on schools’ free lunch
programs during the week so they can make it
through the weekend with enough to eat.
• Supported Project Self-Sufficiency, which assists
low-income, single parents to become free from
community and government assistance through
education.
• Supported Pathways to Independence, which
helps low-income single women who have a
history of family abuse and who have been
neglected by society.
• Supported Beach Cities Interfaith Services,
which provides food, clothing and support
services for homeless and low-income families
in Huntington Beach.

KEEP ROTARIANS INVOLVED IN THEIR COMMUNITY
• Supported Camp to Belong, helping siblings
reunite after being separated by the foster
care system.
• Led the “Lego Engineers Club” at the Boys
& Girls Club to teach kids about science,
technology, engineering and math.
• Made the holidays special for low-income
children by providing gifts and pictures
with Santa.
• Cooked dinner for families staying at the
Ronald McDonald House.

around the world and right here in our
own community there are so many that
are far less fortunate. Surf City Rotary

Rotary’s 2015 Premier Charity
When kids need a place to come after
school, they know they can count on
the Boys & Girls Clubs of Huntington
Valley. We do more than just provide
a safe space for our kids. We provide
an environment where youth are
encouraged to imagine, discover, and
grow. Under our guidance and with
YOUR support, our community’s kids
are achieving great futures! One step at
a time.
You help kids feel confident and ready
for school by providing them with a
brand new pair of shoes. You feed kids
each weekend, so they won’t have to go
to bed hungry. You spark their interest
in learning by making technology and
science fun and interactive. That’s not all
that you’re doing! By being here tonight,
you are also helping us build a brand
new Boys & Girls Club at Golden West
College in 2015.
How are you helping us make a real
difference in our community? Well, you
give kids in need learning opportunities
that will help them succeed in school.
The new Club is expected to serve up to
2,500 kids per year. That’s 2,500 more
children who will get homework help
and tutoring every day after school.
They’ll get to participate in fun STEM
activities. They’ll get to join volunteer
clubs and learn about the importance of
giving back. They’ll get to form a brand
new support system, with staff members
who will mentor and care for them. And,
parents will get peace of mind, knowing
that their children are safe and learning
while they’re busy at work or in school. All
of this is made possible thanks to YOU.
When you look around tonight, you’ll be
greeted by the smiling faces of our young
Club members. Don’t forget, your support
is making a real difference in their lives!
By being here tonight, you are helping the
Club change the lives of thousands of kids
each year. Rotary is treating kids to special
holiday presents, teaching kids about
technology and science, and preparing
backpacks full of food for disadvantaged
kids to take home for the weekend. Rotary
is there for each Club members every step

Capital Campaign
Thanks to Surf City Splash supporters and
many generous community members,
construction has begun on a brand new Boys
& Girls Club and gymnasium at Golden
West College! These two new buildings will
be part of the Boys & Girls Club’s Kingston
Technology Family Campus, joining the
Club’s on-campus preschool in a new threebuilding complex that will serve kids of all
ages. The new facilities will be open by the end
of 2015!
The Boys & Girls Club’s new Kingston
Technology Family Campus will reach more
than 1,500 children each year and help
whole families make their dreams of great
futures come true. Services at the new Family
Campus will include:
• Licensed preschool programs for
children ages 6 weeks to 5 years old.
• Before and after school care for school
age youth.
Capital Campaign
• Full day programs during summer
and school holidays.
• Sports leagues and athletics programs.
It’s been a long road. We are thrilled that
the project will finally be finished this year.
We will once again be able to serve kids from
diapers to graduation all at one site! And,
with the special location on a community
college campus, we’re adding a new element
that makes this even better than our old site.
Moms and dads will be able to go back to
school with on-campus care for their kids.
And, kids who grow up on a college campus
will learn to see going to college as a natural
next step after high school.”
Family support services, including the Club’s
award-winning Twilight Education Project.
CEO Tanya Hoxsie says, “In the 1980’s, when
my children were young, our preschool, our
school-age program and our gym were all
located at a closed school site in Huntington
Beach. Since the programs were located
side-by-side, my children started in the
infant room and progressed to the schoolage center when they started kindergarten.
It was a wonderful model. It allowed me and
all parents at the Club to have our children at
the same site. From infants to high schoolers.
But, in 2006, the school was sold by the school
district we’d been renting from. Since then, the
Boys & Girls Club has been working diligently
to recreate the model of a side-by-side
preschool, school-age center and gymnasium.
More than $7 million has been raised of the
$12 million needed to fully fund the project.

closer to fully funding the Family Campus.
