President ViceVice-President President Elect Secretary Treasurer Larry Byers Julie Frauenholtz Kevin Morris Bill Dobler Brad Seltzer President’s President’s Assistant Denise Robinson 2008-09 Official Publication of the Rotary Club of Everett (Charter No. 272) P.O. Box 1225 Everett, WA 98206 August 5th, 2008 Volume 92, Issue 6 LEADING OFF Mark Olson and Kaye Phinney were at the door today, and President Byers rang the bell to start meeting 6 of his presidency, number 4768 for the club. President Byers began the meeting by leading us in the Pledge of Allegiance. VISITING ROTARIANS AND GUESTS Kristie Dutton introduced visiting Rotarians and guests. In attendance were some distinguished Rotarians from Rotary District 5050: Larry Jubie, District Governor Elect, and Harv Jubie, Past District Governor. Visiting Rotarian Don Murphy joined us from the Seattle Club (a 20 year Rotary veteran!). Guests included Steve Miller’s uncle Bobby Miller, Bobbie Stevens introduced Bob Reese, Kim Buick introduced Marion Robinson, and also attending was Karst Brandsma. Larry O’Donnell provides a bit of history Larry O’Donnell provided the thought for the day, a historical overview of the early car crossings over Stevens Pass, with the first car crossing made by Everett Rotary Clubs own Abe Glassberg on November 1, 1924. Back then the crossing took twenty-seven hours and involved having the car pulled up some sections by cable, pushed through mud in others, and finally pulled by a team of horses. Abe would serve as our club’s president in 1963-1964, and died at age 96 in 1994. Jessica Gurley offered the opening song, Battle Hymn of the Republic. ANNOUNCEMENTS Kevin Nasr gave his classification talk, but admitted before doing so that he forgot his notes. He acknowledged his wife of 22 years Bonnie and two children, and mentioned his business, Wicked Cellars. Kevin also tried to thank his sponsor, but since he has been in the club for awhile now there was some confusion about just who that was… President Byers took a moment to give a special recognition to Dick Schlosser for his contribution of a copier and software to the club. Many thanks, Dick! President Larry Byers celebrates his auction win! Dale Packard gave an update on the Aquasox fellowship, Edgar Martinez night on August 21st. This meeting is the deadline and Dale needs $$$ now! An information flyer was on all tables for the next Group Study Exchange. This will be a visit to Ecuador. The club is looking for professionals between the ages of 24 to 40 to travel for a 4 to 6 week cultural and vocational exchange. The application deadline is September 11th, and further information can be obtained through Betsy Baker. A card was available for club members to sign for the Herber family. John Herber passed away on August 4th. HAPPY BUCKS Lots of happy Rotarians: Tom Rainville reports that his wife now has a clean bill of health– cancer free! Congratulations! Mark Baker is a little unhappy that he is missing Sturgis week. Steve Miller was happy to win the men’s 40 overall waterski championship, and to celebrate by barefoot skiing with his 80 year old uncle. Mark Nesse was happy to further chronicle the adventures of Will McMahan, who is now passing through Hazard, Kentucky. Will’s blog can be found at willsbicycleadventure.com. Other happy Rotarians included Tom Gray, Reid Shockey, and Zeb Cobbs. The drawing included a handmade purse from Africa won by Rich Toyer. Mark Duffy contributed numerous tickets to Aquasox games, and Dave Surface contributed box seats to the same. Larry Jubie contributed box seats for that night’s Mariners game, and Kevin auctioned those off. President Byers jumped in to get the auction going, but he was the only one to test the waters so he ended up winning! PROGRAM: Helping Women and Infants in West Africa by Karen Bukis Karen has recently returned from a humanitarian mission to Mali, West Africa. Karen explains that 1 in 4 children born in Mali will not live to age 5. Everett Rotary assisted Karen’s mission to bring medical assistance to Mali by helping to purchase a commercial grade breast pump to a small community. The pump was needed because so many babies are born to malnourished mothers, and often the babies are too small to nurse. Mali is considered to be the worst country in the world to be a mother due to the high mortality rates. The country is still using 1980’s medical technology and equipment and women suffer a death rate similar to what the U.S. experienced during the civil war. Karen notes that there is a continuing need for x-ray machines, oxygen concentrators, pulse oximeters, and other equipment. She was grateful for Rotary’s assistance and would be happy to send more equipment to Mali. NEXT WEEK’S PROGRAM Death with Dignity, presented by Booth Gardner, introduced by Mark Nesse.
