TTHE ROTARY CLUB OF LANGKAWI SEPTEMBER 2013 ISSUE 3 NEWSLETTER A resounding success RCL visits secondary school children in Tuba Island Club Treasurer Sunil Maniar Originally from K.L Sunil graduated from Monash University Australia as an accountant. He worked in KL and then Singapore. ! We asked MRSM if they can lend a helping hand with our project of giving out dictionaries to children of Tuba School. We got more than that. They gave a 20 minute motivational session. Nothing beats the underlying message that one child can relay to the other and that is:“ It’s cool to stay in school”. ! We are also holding an essay writing competition entitled “Living in Tuba”. This is open to all students of Tuba school. The essay should be in English and 120-150 words long. The closing date is Sept 30th and the price giving ceremony is in October. There is a RM100, RM50 and RM25 prize money In 1989 Sunil moved to Langkawi to start a duty free business called Idaman Suri. Sunil is married to his lovely Ann, Raksha who is also a Rotarian. They have two children. RCL” adopted” Tuba secondary school and will get involved with it’s activities as an ongoing project. There is much to be done and we welcome all help. By far the most important meeting of all in our short history as a club is an audience with Tan Sri at LADA on 11.09.2013. The purpose of this meeting was to secure LADA ‘s commitment in supporting and sponsoring our project which was to clean up the waterways from Kilim to Tanjung Rhu . This is to take place in the morning of Saturday , November 9th 2013. ! ! Rtns Bas, Suresh, Sunil, Ken and Hery supported Rtn David who gave a superb presentation on his project “Cleaner Waterways. Tan Sri loved the idea and we got the commitment we wanted. We also got a district grant to execute this project. We left LADA with a very high morale. ! ! But there is a lot of work to be done and we call upon all fellow Rotarians to come forward and lend a helping hand to make this project into a success story. While David is away for 2 weeks , Bas is at hand to PM and liaise with a committee from LADA. There is actually a working document provided by David A “TO DO” check list. President Bas urges all fellow Rotarians to do their bit in the spirit of Rotary. This will be our first big project since Charter night. When we pull it off it will go down in record as being a well needed and necessary project on the island. Our first interclub meeting was held on 25th August. It was attended by Rotarians Puspa Devi, Darul and Ann Sham, Shema, Shanti, Puni, Dr Baskaran, Puspa’s sister and special guests from Rotary Club of Cochin Beachside - Sunil and Shabu. Marc Dyer son of Rotarian Hery deHaan also attended the meeting where as a university undergraduate he was able to get an insight of the workings of Rotary. It is hoped that experiences like these may encourage young people to participate in Rotary. !
