The Enfield Village Association (EVA) is a nonprofit
organization originally established in 2000 to promote
and facilitate ideas and projects that would provide community pride in Enfield’s historical, cultural, commercial,
recreational, and natural resources for residents and visitors to the Enfield Village. EVA’s activities are funded by
contributions from individuals, businesses and the Town,
as well as community events and grants.
In 2001, we joined forces with the Main Street Program
when Enfield was selected to participate in the New
Hampshire Village Main Street program. This alliance
provided EVA with training, plus technical, state and
nation-wide support in the areas of design, promotion,
organization and economic restructuring of our downtown area. EVA’s vision for Enfield is that the Main Street
area will serve, as it once did, as the core of the community: a place where people come together to enjoy the
convenience and friendliness of hometown businesses,
local services and unique recreational activities. It is our
hope that the variety of neighborhood homes and businesses will reflect residents’ respect for historic preservation while addressing the practical needs of the present.
EVA’s focus in 2010 will be to continue to rejuvenate
Main Street through events, beautification projects and
economic development. As we move further into economic development, our hope is to collaborate and partner with the greater Enfield Business Community to help
them grow and thrive in Enfield.
This Enfield Business and Services Directory is one element in our plan to drive economic development and
improve the economic vibrancy of Main Street and the
rest of our community. We believe this directory will be a
valuable resource for our residents and visitors to ensure
we do the most we can to encourage people to do business locally, thus improving our local economy.
In addition to the businesses and services available in
Enfield, the Directory also contains information on town
government, schools, churches, recreational and cultural
opportunities and a map of Enfield.
The Directory contains a gridded Town map – to be
found in the center of this booklet – which shows roads,
landmarks, bodies of water, etc. Our thanks to Jim Taylor,

See Building Inspector for: building, electrical, mechanical,
plumbing and demolition permits, inspection requests, health
issues and fire inspections. The Town requires that a building
permit be obtained prior to the commencement of any improvement, new construction or additions, renovations, demolitions,
etc. Permits are needed to install and operate oil burning equipment and other types of heating devices. Forms are available on
the Town’s website, in the Building Inspector’s office and at the
Town Manager’s office.

The Enfield Conservation Commission is involved in a wide
variety of conservation and preservation projects.
DOGS
All dogs must be licensed by April 30th annually. Fees
are payable to the Town Clerk. Enfield enacted a leash
law and owners of dogs are liable for any damages
caused by their dogs.

The Town of Enfield administers all federal, state and
local elections according to procedures laid down by
State law. Local elections are held each March. For more

You MUST see a licensed attendant prior to dumping (Andy,
Lee, Josh, Jeff or Ken). On Fridays and Saturdays, stop at the
Transfer Station for inspection.
OTHER SOLID WASTE DISPOSAL
Certain heavy or bulky materials, such as construction waste,
must be taken to the City of Lebanon’s sanitary landfill on
Route 12A in West Lebanon.
Weight tickets are required and are available at the Enfield
Town Manager’s office or the Transfer Station.
Hammond’s Grinding & Recycling, Inc., Canaan, NH, will
now accept construction demolition, concrete, metal, brush,
stumps, shingles, etc. at their yard in Canaan (603)523-4353, or

The Tax Collector is responsible for the collection of taxes,

TOWN REPORT
The Annual Town Report is prepared by the Town to provide
a financial and narrative record of the previous year’s activities.
The Town Report is mailed to each Enfield property owner and
available upon request at the Enfield Town Office to other residents. Extra copies are available at the Town Manager’s office.
The School District has a separate report.
VOTER REGISTRATION
The Supervisors of the Checklist are responsible for registering voters, maintaining the record of registered voters and
preparing the checklists for use at all elections and town, school
district, and Eastman Village district meetings.
The Supervisors publicize, in advance, the date and time when
persons may register to vote or change their party affiliation.
Voter registration may also be done at the Town Clerk’s office.

ENFIELD HISTORIC SITES
SHAKER BRIDGE
The bridge was completed by the Shakers in 1849 when the
ice was 26 inches thick. Log cribs, 10 feet high, were filled with
rocks and placed across the lake, at the selected narrowest spot,
between piles driven a road width apart on both sides of the
proposed line of the bridge. By cutting the ice underneath, the
cribs sank to the bottom of the lake. Crib was piled upon crib
until the bridge was completed. Destroyed by the hurricane of
1938, it was replaced by the current steel structure in 1940.
ENFIELD SHAKER MUSEUM
The Enfield Shakers settled on the west shore of Mascoma
Lake in 1893. They practiced equality of the sexes and races,
celibacy, pacifism, and communal ownership of property. They
were known for their packaged seeds, herbal medicines,
cooperage and industrial knitting. Their Great Stone Dwelling
was designed by Ammi Burnham Young, a local architect who
later created Federal courthouses and post offices across the
country. At their peak, the Enfield Shakers gathered 300 members and farmed 3,000 acres. In 1927, they sold the property to
the Missionaries of Our Lady of La Salette. The Mary Keane
Chapel was added c. 1930 and is used today for weddings and
concerts. In 1986 the Museum was formed. It is open yearround for tours, children’s programs, craft demonstrations,
seminars and retreats. Visitors may see exhibits, gardens and
the Museum’s eight historic structures, as well as hike the trails
and visit the Museum Store. Overnight stays are possible to
enhance the visitor’s experience.
TOWN HOUSE, ENFIELD CENTER
In 1859 the Town House at “North End” was moved to this
location, cut open, spread apart, and a 15 to 20 foot addition put
in the middle. Voters decided in 1906 to hold future town meetings in Whitney Hall, Enfield Village, but it was 1916 before the
change was made.
ENFIELD CENTER SCHOOLHOUSE
Built in 1851 and closed in 1947. Later used by the Earnest
Workers Club as a clubhouse; it is now the Enfield Center
Historical Museum.
LOCKEHAVEN SCHOOLHOUSE
An earlier schoolhouse was built in 1793; burned in 1802/3,
rebuilt and burned again in 1819. Present building erected in
1864, abandoned in 1922. Restored in 1947, it contains many
interesting pictures, documents, and other historical items.
Nearby was the Lockehaven Church, built about 1838. It had a
large dome-shaped steeple topped by a so-called “fish” weathervane which is still preserved in the schoolhouse. Remodeled
in the 1890’s, it was used as a community center under the name
Union Hall. Taken down in 1915, it became part of the Freeman
home on Oak Hill.
