The 2007 "Beverly International" NPC Northern Kentucky Bodybuilding &
Figure Championship was held on March 24, at the Northern Kentucky Convention
Center, Covington, KY.
This event was one of the largest contests in the United States, with 249 competitors. There were over 170 bodybuilders and nearly 80 figure competitors to make this
the largest Northern in its more than a quarter of a century history. The Northern is a
NPC national qualifier and the top two in each class of the men’s and women’s open
bodybuilding division qualify for NPC national status. In figure the top 3 in each class
qualify for nationals and the top 5 for Jr USA and JR Nationals.

NOVICE MID HEAVYWEIGHT
One of the highlights of the show was the athletes' sportsmanship and backstage camaraderie. The audience of 2200 at the evening performance fell right
in step with the tone and was one of the most respectful and kindest ever experienced at a bodybuilding contest. Speaking of the audience, two giant 15’x20’
video screens made sure that there wasn’t a bad seat in the house. We’ll let the
photos tell most of the story of the contest but here are some of the “behind the
scenes” thoughts from the promoters, Sandy and Roger Riedinger.
1st
Roger’s Random Thoughts …
As the entries cascaded in I worried more and more, ‘How are we going
to check all these competitors in and start on time?” The prejudging is going
to take approximately five and a half hours. If we don’t start on time, the precontinued on page 9

from his 4th place finish in 2005 to first
in the light heavies and overall champ.
Another guy that really got his condition together was bantam, Scott Foster.
Scott did some shows last fall and in an
attempt to get a little bigger lost a little
conditioning. Well, for the Northern
Scott knew conditioning was king and
he brought it in spades. Weighing just
137 (and when you see his photo in the
contest report you’ll never believe that’s
all he weighed) Scott won the bantams
and finished 2nd in the overall with two
first place votes.
NOVICE HEAVYWEIGHT
judging will run right into the evening
and we are going to need some set up
time.
judges looking for?” I cringe. Each judge
records his score independently; it’s not
a consensus of the panel.
Luckily, nearly two hundred weighed
in on Friday, so we just had to worry
about fifty Saturday morning. I still had
to worry about the stragglers. Check-in
time was 8:30. There are always a few
who think they can come in late and it’s
no problem. Well, it’s a huge problem
because it holds up the entire show.
There are 250 numbers that need to
be assigned by class. You can’t assign
numbers until the check-in is closed. As
it turned out two athletes showed up too
?
late and were not permitted to compete.
It’s a shame, but it was stated in four
places that check-in was 8:30. For the
2008 Northern all check-ins and weigh1 will?be Friday evening, just like at the
ins
National
2 ? shows.
The scoring is done by a computer
program that our old friend and NNN
contributor, Dave Payne designed for
us. It does it all, crosses out the two high
?
and two low scores for each competitor
so that any individual judging bias is
eliminated, totals the remaining scores,
assigns the placing, and even breaks ties.
Still, I want you to imagine entering nine
scores for each of the 250 athletes. That’s
what Todd and Michelle Jackson did
throughout Saturday afternoon. As soon
as a class left the stage, Stan May collected each judge’s score sheet and took
them over to Todd and Michelle. Let’s
see … 250 athletes’ times nine scores
each equals 2250 computer entries before the placings were determined.
3 The? prejudging ran smoothly. A lot
of you don’t realize how hard it is to
4 ?
judge a show of this size. Each judge is
5 ? for placing each athlete. It’s
responsible
not
6 just? picking the top three, but also
placing every athlete from first to last
7 ?
in a class. Let me tell you, getting that
8 or ?5th through 9th in the correct
4th
order

? a lot of focus and concentration.

The personal highlight for me each
year is when I see an athlete who had
not really come in his best shape in previous years really put it together. And
let me tell you, it’s always conditioning
at the Northern Kentucky. Size matters, but conditioning gets it done. This
year Jonathon Johnson was the one that
put it together. He weighed in at just

A couple of other physiques that
really impressed me conditioning-wise
were Austin Dossey in the novice light
heavies. Austin had classic lines, terrific
conditioning and a great posing routine.
And Bill Yates. I’ve known Bill for more
than twenty-five years. I’ve seen Bill
compete ?
in the Mr America contest, I
saw him win the over 50 at NPC Masters
Nationals and I think he looked better
today than I’ve ever seen him. Here’s
the kicker … Bill is 65 years old!!!! Unbelievable! Talk about motivation.
3rd
In posing I favor the classic style of
physique presentation – if you’ve ever
seen Pumping Iron you’ll know what I
mean. I think Anthony Chapman was
very impressive in this regard. If you like
a little more entertainment with your
posing you’ve got to love Vince Shirey
and Sugar Ray Hammonds.
On the women’s side, Rachel Ogden
in the women’s lightweight was my
idea of the personification of women’s
bodybuilding – kind of a throw back to
the days of Cory and Rachel McLish.
In figure, it is very hard to pick out just
one individual. Brenda James has made
some tremendous improvements to her
physique since I last judged her at the
Kentucky. ?

Sandy’s Insights into the Northern on a much more personal level
Contest prepping and training teach us some very valuable lessons. So does contest promoting. Over the past 25 years I have learned a great deal about people, preparation, advance
planning, timelines, human behavior, foggy brains, attitudes, volunteers, teams, wins and losses,
highs and lows and most of all about why I keep going through this routine year after year. (I
am not talking about the 60 seconds posing routine to music either.)

My planning and prep is broken
down into phases just like your pre
contest diet. I start at phase one
and go all the way through to about
phase 12. It takes me a full year to
work on this special event. Even
though it takes time to get it all
ready, there are really just three reasons why I do this monster event.
1. I like to work with my Roger to
create something wonderful. It gives
Deborah Reboyras
our brains something to work on and
cohesive thought is good for the marriage. It is what we talk about along
with the Beverly business. You may
Amanda Teltow
think we are ‘ate up’ or something….
Deborah Reboyras
no and yeah. Either way it depends on
Heather Mayfield
the season and even if I am ate up, that’s me. Can’t help it. Would you prefer I be anything less?

2. I enjoy the ride, the thrill of the planning, getting every detail nailed down. I hate to miss
even one piece of the puzzle. Every year we try something new that may add a bit of class to
the event. When it works, it is a treat!
3. I do it for you. This is my way to give back to the athlete population. It is a high class
event where amateurs can feel like royalty. We may not serve Louis XIII cognac as a pre-show
spirit, but we do give the athletes more than they expect and the audience leaves feeling like
they just sat through one of the best bodybuilding and figure shows ever. I love getting the
emails that tell me that it was the best day of their life. That right there makes my job worth
every dime and hour of planning.

I want to give a huge thank you to
all of those that have competed and
worked to support the NKY over the
years. It wasn’t always a national qualifier with this many athletes and attendees. It has grown up over the years just
like your children do. They start out in
infant stages, small and very needy and
year after year they learn lessons and
become more mature. The NKY has in
a sense been my baby. It is now more
than half my age and may be more
mature in the sense of the word than
I am as a person. The NKY has grown
strong, she never complains about
things because she finds a way to fix
them. People love her and look forward
to seeing her every year. Some people
even plan years in advance just to
enter her doors. She has many friends.
FOR REAL SUCCESS STORIES VISIT WWW.BODYBUILDINGWORLD.COM
More than they say we have as humans
when we are lucky as we age… I think
it’s like you can count the number of
friends you have on your right hand or
something…. not her. Her friends unite
every year like a reunion of souls. They
collect and socialize, work and laugh.
The party goes on for 48 hours. They
never complain about her. They love
supporting their friend.

The NKY loves her friends too! She
would not be able to go on if she didn’t
have them all. The NKY touches your
heart. She speaks to many people and she
sometimes changes their lives just like a
good friend. The Northern is predictable.
She always comes around the same time
of the year. She keeps in touch with her
friends and never lets them forget about
her. She is faithful to her following. The
Northern has a heart. She is alive. Her spirit
lives inside us. She keeps us on track. She
holds us accountable. She gives back (not
just to the athlete, over the past 5 years, she
has quietly donated $50,000 to the Shriner’s
Children’s Burns Institute).
Most of all, the Northern is a memory
maker for your life. Now that she is
grown up, she understands that these moments are precious. She worries about the
people and wants everyone to experience
something wonderful. Looking back, the
Northern wouldn’t have done things any
other way. Around the same time next
year, you will see her come into bloom.
The friends and athletes will unite and
she will be happy for their time in the
spotlight.
All of our lives are webbed together
by many different things. This show however, has glued many bonds, tightened
many webs and positioned many people
on the road to a better life. Roger and I
promise to nurture the NKY and keep
her youthful side showing as she (and
we) age. Her wrinkles may be seen from
time to time, but you can bet, her heart
will never be filled because it just keeps
expanding, ebbing and flowing into others
so her spirit will live on inside us forever.
So, when I say that the NKY has a life
of its own, you can see now why I am so
consumed by her and how she fills my
heart with history and happiness. BEV
