Gourmet tourism is the new way to
travel; it is the choice of an everincreasing number of gastronomes
who love to savour authentic flavours.
This type of exploration is more
sophisticated and demanding, going
beyond the well-trodden tourist routes
to reach those places where tradition
holds sway, guided by the lure and the
pleasures of an excellent cuisine.
Food and wine are, in fact, also an area’s expression of its
culture, of its identity and history.
Over 1,500 km of “Wine and Food Roads of Lombardy” are
on offer in this guide, criss-crossing the territory with 12
routes and knitting together a network designed to enhance
our Region's rich and varied heritage of quality and typical
produce. We aim to continue making this initiative of ours
ever more effective, so that it evolves into a stimulus,
creating momentum for the further integrated development
of the local economic and production network. This is a
commitment which the Lombardy Region Department of
Agriculture feels compelled to support in full and so we
invite you to join us in our journey to sample the best of
produce from our agricultural concerns, which provide living
proof of the firm bonds between territory and typical
products, between the professional form of hospitality
today and the unique atmosphere of a rural world whose
charm remains unchanged.

Federation of the Wine and
Food Roads of Lombardy
Highways and Byways
of the Senses
Lombardy was one of the first regions in Italy to develop
fully the idea of Wine Roads, promoting the creation of the
network of Wine and Food Roads of Lombardy.
This is a series of ‘gourmet itineraries’, whose aim is that
of enhancing and promoting typical quality wine and food
products, in the context, however, of the traditions and
culture of their territory of origin. With the creation of the
‘gourmet routes’, it is possible to safeguard and enhance both
the territory and its rural culture, by means of integrated
development in the tourism sector, which can lead to new
levels of professionalism.
Twelve Roads are currently recognised by the Region,
eight of which purely for their wine; these are brought
together under the umbrella of one regional Federation,
conceived to standardise and improve the quality of supply
as well as to ensure adequate training methods for
those operating in the sector.
Apart from preserving their own specific nature and
characteristics, those who join the Roads which make up the
Federation also commit to maintaining high standards of
quality in terms of production and accommodation. The
traveller who follows the Lombardy Gourmet Roads, which are
specially indicated throughout the area by standardised
roadsigns, can visit wine growers’ associations, agricultural
concerns, agritourism businesses, wineries, pubs and places to
stay, all of which uphold the prerequisites of typical regional
products. The proposed itineraries are therefore a mélange of
scenic landscapes, artistic sites, monuments, palaces, churches
and museums of popular culture, which, together with good
cuisine and wine will enable the visitor to take home with him
a little piece of the territory he has visited.

Wine and Food Road
of the Valtellina
Route length: about 200 km
over a territory comprising
78 communes
Number of members: 77
The Wine and Food Road of the Valtellina extends over the
entire province of Sondrio, encompassing the DOC and DOCG
wine appellation areas, and showcasing the great red wines
and other typical and traditional agrifood products of the Valtellina. The
Valchiavenna and the Valtellina boast many prehistoric and historical remains: from rock engravings to castles and stately homes in urban centres and several sanctuaries that rise up
symbolically from a sea of vines. Vine-growing in these valleys has always been vital for the
local economy and has played a key role in preserving the landscape. The territory of the
Wine and Food Road of the Valtellina is divided into five areas corresponding to geographical
and historical boundaries: the Contado di Chiavenna (Chiavenna and its environs), the
Terziere di Sotto (Morbegno and its environs), the Terziere di Mezzo (Sondrio and its environs),
the Terziere di Sopra (Tirano, Sondrio and its environs) and the Magnifica Terra (Bormio and
its environs). Tourists can follow the extremely interesting and scenic routes that wind along
the terraced vineyards on the Rhaetian (northern) side of the Valtellina valley by car, bicycle
or on foot. The routes are named after and traverse the production zones of Valtellina Superiore DOCG wine, extending from Maroggia (in the Commune of Berbenno) to the area of
Sassella (between the Communes of Castione Andevenno and Sondrio); from Grumello
(northeast of Sondrio) to Inferno (between the Communes of Poggiridenti and Chiuro), while
the Valgella route wends its way between the Communes of Chiuro and Teglio and near the
residential area of Tirano is the last route, Baruffini.

Food Road
of the Valli Varesine
Route length: about 150 km
over a territory comprising
56 communes
Number of members: 110
The Food Road of the Valli Varesine covers the entire mountainous area of the province of Varese, including the Valceresio, Valcuvia, Valganna, Valmarchirolo and Valli del
Luinese. The road is so rich in treasures that it is difficult to describe it
in just a few sentences. The main highlights are the landscape and its natural assets,
such as water, verdant green valleys and the backdrop of the snow-capped Alps, as well
as a significant architectural heritage scattered amongst its towns and villages.
Sites to visit include the historical lake hamlets and their
ports and docks (Laveno Mombello, Luino, Maccagno,
Gavirate, Lavena Ponte Tresa, Porto Valtravaglia, etc.), the
inhabited inland villages (for instance the painted village
of Arcumeggia), fortifications (the Torre Imperiale at
Maccagno, the Rocca di Angera), the Campo dei Fiori park,
the “Cadorna Line” fortifications, the production settlements that sprang up due to the presence of water (the
Maglio (forge) at Ghirla, the Mulini di Piero (mills) at Curiglia), the series of aristocratic
villas (Villa della Porta Bozzolo at Casalzuigno); the museums (Museo Internazionale Design
Ceramico at Laveno Mombello and the Museo Floriano Bodini at Gemonio); numerous
sanctuaries, oratories and churches (the Parish church of Arcisate and the Abbey of San
Gemolo). Visitors can follow the Road by bicycle along a cycle track and take the Sasso del
Ferro cable car at Laveno to enjoy a splendid view of all the lakes in the province, and the
Monteviasco cable car to discover a picturesque village in the Val Veddasca. The three
proposed routes combine this marvellous heritage with the territory’s equally interesting
culinary and cultural assets, making a visit to the area truly unforgettable.

Wine and Food Road
of the Valcalepio
Route length: about 100 km
over a territory comprising
94 communes
Number of members: 40
Valcalepio is a hilly area that lies in the western part of the
Province of Bergamo, on the downriver right bank of the
Oglio. However, in vine-growing terms, the Valcalepio comprises a much larger area, starting from Lake Iseo and ending near
Lake Como, a stretch of land extending for a length of 60 km, although never wider than
5-6 km. It therefore takes in the last foothills of the Orobic Prealps and, from a geological
point of view, it can be divided into two distinct areas on the basis of soil characteristics:
from the hill belt east of Bergamo as far as Lake Iseo the soils are clayey and calcareous,
while in the area northwest of Bergamo the soils are siliceous and clayey. The DOC wine
of this area is made from grapes grown in vineyards covering 300 hectares at altitudes
up to 600 m asl. The Wine and Food Road of the Valcalepio is made up of three different
routes. The first itinerary, also known as I Conventi (the Road of the Convents), begins at
the Capriate S. Gervasio exit on the A4 motorway and ends in Bergamo. Along the way,
visitors may admire the Abbey of Sant’Egidio at Sotto il Monte Giovanni XXIII, the Abbey
of Pontida and the splendid Church of San Tomè at Almenno San Salvatore. The second
itinerary, the Cuore della Valcalepio (Heart of the Valcalepio), starts in Bergamo and finishes in Grumello del Monte. This itinerary includes visits to the city of Bergamo, the
Abbey of San Paolo D’Argon, the Oratory of Santa Barbara (inside Villa Suardi, at Trescore
Balneatico), frescoed by Lorenzo Lotto, and several castles that belonged to the family of
the condottiero Bartolomeo Colleoni. The third itinerary, called Il Lago (The Lake), unwinds
from the Grumello del Monte exit on the A4 motorway towards Sarnico on Lake Iseo,
returning back via a different route and taking in the fifteenth-century Castel de’ Conti
at Castelli Calepio.

Wine Road of
Franciacorta
WINES
Route length: about 80 km
over a territory comprising
19 communes
Number of members: 107
Franciacorta is the name given to the morainic ampitheatre
lying southwest of Lake Iseo, bounded by Monte Orfano
and Monte Alto and by the Oglio and Mella rivers. The name
Franciacorta comes from the Latin francae curtes, that is, small communities under the protection of Benedictine monks, which were exempted from taxes
during the Middle Ages provided they reclaimed and tilled the land they were granted.
The leitmotif which guides the traveller through this territory comprises ancient abbeys
and prestigious wine-cellars, in a pleasant itinerary to be savoured and relished slowly,
to be travelled perhaps by bicycle in order to discover fine architecture and prized wines.
Franciacorta is vine-cloaked hills, small ancient stone villages, medieval towers and castles,
sixteenth-century stately homes and patrician villas, lands devoted to viticulture since
the Roman era. The disciples of this ancient tradition, today’s vine-growers, produce
high-quality wines, Franciacorta DOCG being the area’s signature wine. Well worth
visiting, besides the wine-cellars, is the Cluniac Monastery of San Pietro in Lamosa (1083),
overlooking the Torbiere del Sebino nature reserve, a birdwatchers’ paradise. At Rovato,
on Monte Orfano, rises the Convento dell’Annunciata (1449) amongst whose works of
art is an Annunciation by Gerolamo Romanino. The Olivetan Abbey of San Nicola (10th
century) at Rodengo Saiano is one of the most important monastic buildings in Italy, the
cornerstone of the Benedictine monks in Franciacorta. It boasts works by Foppa, Moretto,
Cossali, Romanino and Gambara. Also worth visiting at Ome is the Maglio Averoldi, an
ancient forge housed in a 15th century building, which was in use until 1984. A group
of volunteer forgers keep the forge open to the public and produce damask steel blades.
Last but not least, tourists should not miss a boat trip on Lake Iseo with a stopover at
Monte Isola, the largest lake island in Europe, where fishermen dry their fish in
the sun and a craft production of boats and fishing nets still survives.

Wine Road of the
Colli dei Longobardi
Route length: about 90 km
over a territory comprising
9 communes
Number of members: 24
The Wine Road of the Colli dei Longobardi is a food and wine
route that travels through the Brescian territory, from Brescia –
the provincial capital – to the Prealp foothills. This has been an
important vine-growing area – also rich in gastronomic tradition – since
ancient times and, by following the proposed route, tourists will have the chance to get to know
it better by visiting ancient wine-cellars and trattorias. The route starts in Brescia, an important
art city which proudly displays the grandeur of the Roman civilization, with the Roman Forum in
via Musei, the medieval splendour of the the Benedictine Monastery of Santa Giulia founded by
the last Longobard King, Desiderio, and the marvellous Piazza della Loggia, Piazza Paolo VI,
Teatro Grande and the churches in the old town centre. Also interesting are the Museo della
Mille Miglia and the Pinacoteca Tosio Martinengo. Brescia is also the only city in the world to
have an urban vineyard that is actually used to produce wine. Invernenga grapes are grown in
the Pusteral Vineyard, at the foot of the Castle, and are late-harvested to produce the Pusterla
Bianco, the city’s only distinctive wine. The itinerary moves on to Flero, and then continues on
to Poncarale and Capriano del Colle, where Capriano del Colle DOC wine is produced on the
slopes of the Monte Netto plateau, thanks to their favourable calcareous-clayey soil. At Montichiari
are the Castello Bonoris, the Archaelogical Museum with important findings of the Longobard
necropolis of San Zeno, the Bergomi Museum and the Pinacoteca Pasinetti. On the way back to
Brescia, visitors should make a point of stopping at Castenedolo to visit the Parish Church and
the Sala Civica dei Disciplini (16th century) and at Montirone to see Palazzo Lechi, the most
outstanding of the palazzi dotted around the Brescian plain. Another interesting stopover is at
Ciliverghe di Mazzano, where the Museo del Vino e dei Cavatappi (Wine and Corkscrew Museum)
is housed in Villa Mazzucchelli. The route then returns to Rezzato and Botticino, where
visitors can see the Museo del Marmo (Marble Museum) and taste Botticino DOC wine,
before going back to Brescia through the suburb of Sant'Eufemia.

Wine and Food Road
of Garda
Route length: about 200 km
over a territory comprising
25 communes
Number of members: 95
The Wine and Food Road of Garda runs through the hinterland of the Lombard shore of Lake Garda, connecting
Limone with Peschiera, extending into the DOC production
areas of Garda Classico, Lugana and San Martino della Battaglia. While
travelling down the route, there are several places to visit that either overlook the lake
or are set in a verdant landscape featuring wood-cloaked hills and mountains. Unmissable, at Gardone Riviera, is the Vittoriale degli Italiani,
the museum-house of Gabriele d’Annunzio. Other obligatory visits are the splendid towns of Salò, Manerba with
the the Rocca di Manerba and its Archeological and Nature
Park, Lonato with the Rocca di Lonato and the Casa del
Podestà, belonging to the Fondazione Ugo Da Como. From
Lonato, driving along the hilltops on the southern boundary of the Valtenesi and passing through Calvagese, we
reach Polpenazze, the wine production hub of the southwest shore of Lake Garda. Many
beautiful sites can be taken in along this route: the 9th-century Church of S. Pietro in
Lucone at Polpenazze of Romanesque origin, the Castle of Soiano (9th century), and the
remains of a pile-dwelling village in the area of the Sovenigo lakes. Also famous and
worth seeing is San Martino della Battaglia with its Torre Sacrario, inaugurated in 1893
to commemorate the victory of the Piedmontese and the French over the Austrians in
1859. Gourmet tourism blends in remarkably well with the natural and artistic heritage
that is fostered and enhanced by Lake Garda which, thanks to its mild and windy
climate, is also an ideal place for watersports.

Road of Mantuan
Wines and Food
Route length: about 300 km
over a territory comprising
41 communes
Number of members: 64
Mantua is one of the main Italian art cities, and its territory
is also celebrated for a rich gastronomic tradition and its agricultural produce - grapes, pears, melons, onions and cereals
being the most prized. Here the wine-making tradition is aided by the
configuration of the terrain, the exposure of the vines to the sun and the mild climate. At
the moment, more than 1,000 hectares are planted to vine within the DOC Garda Colli
Mantovani territory. The wine-making culture of the DOC Lambrusco Mantovano area also
has a centuries-old tradition. A trip through nature and the towns and hamlets of the Mantovano area shows the strong influence of the Gonzaga dynasty who, besides pleasing the
eye and imagination, also relished gourmet delicacies. The route starts from the Colli
Morenici Mantovani, the gentle rolling hills crossed by the Mincio river that overlook Lake
Garda, and touches – to mention only a few of the marvellous sites – Bande, a hamlet of
Cavriana and birthplace of Virgil, which boasts Villa Mirra Siliprandi, one of the Gonzagas’
most loved residences (now the seat of the Museo Archeologico dell’Alto Mantovano) and
Solferino, where the Museo del Risorgimento is a must-see. The Road then continues to
Castiglione delle Stiviere, the town of Saint Luigi Gonzaga and home to the International
Red Cross Museum. Volta Mantovana is worth a stop to see the two Gonzaga residences:
Palazzo Cavriani and Villa Venier. These residences are not far from Castellaro Lagusello, a
hamlet of Monzambano, where there is a lovely nature reserve. The city of Mantua, the
meeting point of the Colli Morenici Mantovani and Lambrusco Mantovano DOC wine areas,
obviously does not need to be described in much detail as it is already internationally known
as a must-see in terms of art. The route south of the River Po, leading to to San Benedetto
Po and the Monastery of Polirone, Gonzaga and Poggio Rusco, also features precious artistic
and historical sites. While at the confluence of the Oglio and Po rivers, in the southwestern
part of the Mantua province, are Sabbioneta (a Unesco World Heritage site) and Viadana,
the land of Lambrusco wine and melons.

Road of Mantuan
Rice and Risotti
Route length: about 70 km
over a territory comprising
12 communes
Number of members: 28
The Mantuan landscape between the left bank of the Mincio
river and the boundary with the Veneto region crossed by
the Mantuan Rice and Risotti Road is characterised by flat
land cut through by rivers and canals. Here rice-growing, thanks to the
abundant presence of water, has ancient roots and has modelled the landscape, with its
rice-farm courtyards and threshing floors, barge landings, drying and hulling plants.
Vialone Nano rice, the most prized rice variety grown in the region, is prepared in a
unique way, using the riso alla pilota recipe. A good stretch of the western part of the
Road crosses and flanks the Mincio Park, the main nature reserve of the Mantua province.
At Pontemerlano are Villa Isabella d’Este and Villa Riesenfeldt, fine examples of Rococo
style patrician residences, and nearby is the Vallazza nature reserve. Continuing in the
direction of Ostiglia is Governolo, the place where, according to historical accounts, Pope
Leo I stopped the invasion of Attila, king of the Huns. Governolo boasts two important
hydraulic works or basins: the Conca di Sostegno or Conca Vinciana, built on the plan by
Pitentino (1198), later taken up by Bertazzolo on plans by Leonardo, which prevent the
River Po from entering the Mincio river and, further downstream, the Conca di San Leone
that allows navigation on the Mincio and Po rivers as the two are at different levels. In
the residential areas of Ostiglia and Revere is the Isola Boschina nature reserve situated
in the middle of the River Po. Travelling northwards, after a few kilometres the route
touches on Villimpenta, with the mid-thirteenth century Castello Scaligero and Villa Gonzaghesca or Villa Zani, attributed to Giulio Romano. Finally, Castel d’Ario – the town
where the famous racing car driver, Tazio Nuvolari (1892-1953), was born – preserves
the old towers and walls of an ancient castle. D’Annunzio called Nuvolari “the Flying
Mantuan”. Here the focus is entirely on water and rice.

Road of
Mantuan Truffles
Route length: about 130 km
over a territory comprising
12 communes
Number of members: 31
The Oltrepò Mantovano, the furthermost tip of the province
of Mantua, bordering with the Emilia Romagna region, is a
land steeped in history and tradition, on which the wide River
Po, an imposing presence and guide to the local culture, has left its mark.
When crossing the Oltrepò Mantovano, travellers can see a landscape where man’s hard
work combines harmoniously with the naturalness and peace of nature and the sounds of
its productive life are lost in the silence of the open countryside. Due to its geographical
position, at a crossroads between north-south and east-west, it bears witness to a glorious
past. From the Etruscans to the Romans, from the prolific Middle Ages – when the Benedictine
monks and Matilde di Canossa provided a great contribution – to the Gonzaga duchy that
left its mark over the entire territory, as well as the wars of independence and the farmers’
uprisings. The suitability of the land for agricultural crops has produced a cuisine ‘of princes
and peasants’. Traditional cured meats, Parmigiano Reggiano, the famous tortelli di zucca
(pumpkin tortelli), agnoli in brodo (meat-filled pasta in broth), risottos, truffles, meat
casseroles, torta tagliatelle (cake made from thin strips of puff pastry garnished with crushed
almonds) are only some of the typical dishes that can be relished in the countless restaurants
and agritourism establishments in the area. And here, where the soil, climate and environment are the ideal ingredients for the Tuber magnatum Pico (the prized white truffle), is
where the Road of Mantuan Truffles is located. The main aim of the association, created in
2003, is to foster development in the area by promoting integrated tourism, focused on the
distinctive features of the area’s typical products, gastronomic traditions and high quality
services. Borgofranco sul Po is the ‘capital’ of the truffle area and is home to Tru.Mu., the
Truffle Museum (also the association’s headquarters). Here, a route leads adults and children
to discover interesting scientific data and facts on the precious fungus.

Road of Cremonese Food in the
Land of Stradivari
Route length: about 560 km
over a territory comprising
115 communes
Number of members: 95
Cremona, a borderland between Lombardy and Emilia Romagna, nestles in the heart of the Po Plain. It has a long
agricultural tradition and offers travellers seeking special
tourist attractions countless treasures: churches, villas, castles
and parish churches are scattered all over the area, in the major towns and in the peaceful
countryside. The main town of the province is Cremona, where the highlights of the old
city centre are the beautifully preserved Cathedral, the Baptistry, the Loggia dei Militi, the
Torazzo and the Palazzo Comunale. A cultural centre of some importance, every year the
city hosts important exhibitions in the Museo Civico Ala Ponzone and boasts the “Archi di
Palazzo Comunale” stringed instrument collection. Cremona is the birthplace of Stradivari
and is famous for its violin-making tradition. Today, it is still possible to visit the artisan
workshops specialised in the crafting of stringed instruments. The Cremona territory, lying
between the Po and Oglio rivers, offers many beautiful architectural attractions. Villa Manfredi, built by Voghera on a pre-existing fortress, is located in Cicognolo. Torre de’ Picenardi
boasts the eighteenth-century Villa Sommi-Picenardi, while the Gonzaga-style square of
Isola Dovarese preserves its original Renaissance layout. Piadena houses an important
archeological museum with a rich collection of findings of ancient civilisations and cultures
of the Po Plain, while the magnificent eighteenth-century Villa Mina della Scala can be
seen at Casteldidone. Worthy of mention is Casalmaggiore, with the Museo del Bijou
(Costume Jewellery Museum), the Santuario della Madonna della Fontana and Crema,
whose urban plan and numerous churches and palazzi attest to its rich history. Of particular
interest in Crema are the Duomo and the singular decoration of its façade, the fifteenthcentury Basilica di Santa Maria della Croce and the spectacular Palazzo Terni-Bondenti.
Pizzighettone, a fortified hamlet on the river Adda, preserves an impressive 2 km curtain
wall, confirming its strategic role in the past. The main attractions at Soncino, a military
fortress on the Oglio river, are the Sforza-era fortress with imposing angular towers, the
Parish Church of Santa Maria Assunta and the Museum of Printing. Finally, we recommend
visiting the Visconti Castle at Pandino, featuring a fascinating, almost perfectly preserved
architectural structure. The Cremona area attracts visitors not only due to its cultural and
artistic heritage, but also because it offers unique hospitality to the most demanding gourmet travellers, who are able to savour the true flavours of good food here.

Road of San Colombano Wine
and the Food of Lodi
Route length: about 120 km
over a territory comprising
65 communes
Number of members: 62
The Road of San Colombano Wine and the Food of Lodi is
an itinerary of about 120 km, along which the discerning
tourist is offered, just a short distance from Milan, a land
brimming with splendid historic villages, villas and places where culture,
art and history mingle and are enriched by a great variety of wines and typical local
products. The tour starts in Milan, passes through Chiaravalle, where we find the famous
Cistercian Abbey founded in 1135, Sant’Angelo Lodigiano with its interesting museums,
brushes San Colombano al Lambro and ends in Lodi. There are fascinating sites in the old
town centres, like the sixteenth-century Chiesetta di San Rocco at San Colombano, an
architectural gem based on an octagonal plan which is still in perfect condition. The San
Colombano hill, on which the wine of the same name is produced, is a Pliocenic outcrop
rich in fossil fauna, proving the ancient presence of the sea in the territory which is now
called the Po Plain. The itinerary then takes us to Lodi, a town that has always been linked
to Milan due to the presence of the Visconti, where we find a rich and varied artistic
heritage. The Duomo, one of the largest Romanesque style churches in Lombardy, features
an asymmetrical façade due to the presence of the portal near the bell tower and it is
embellished with sixteenth-century double-lancet windows and a rose-window. Nearby
is the Church of San Francesco, with a high single-lancet window and two “open sky”
double-lancet windows that make the church façade less severe. The tour of the town
ends with a visit to the Sanctuary of the Incoronata, built in 1488 and embellished with a
nineteenth-century loggia. Inside, in the Chapel of San Paolo, are some fine paintings by
Bergognone. The itinerary is enriched by the presence of several producers of local
specialities - there are picturesque wine-cellars and companies producing cured meats
and delicious cheeses. There are also rich and varied craft activities that have brought
fame to the area, such as the ceramics produced in Lodi and the jewellery crafted in Graffignana.

Wine and Food Road
of the Oltrepò Pavese
Route length: about 60 km
over a territory comprising
78 communes
Number of members: 60
The Oltrepò Pavese is one of the most tourism-focused and
welcoming areas in the province of Pavia. It is steeped in
history and in its rolling hills we find health spas, castles,
great wines, traditional flavours and uncontaminated nature. South of
the River Po, the Oltrepò Pavese extends over a surface area of 1,100 km2 and comprises
78 communes. It has a pleasantly varied landscape, the part near the River Po being flat
with fertile and clayey soils of alluvial origin. Just beyond are the gently undulating hills
composed of sedimentary rocks, where vines cover an area of 16,000 hectares, interrupted
only occasionally by acacia and oak woods. The area enjoys a mild climate due to the
currents of air blowing in from Liguria, which ensure mild summers and a constant
breeze. The Oltrepò Pavese is a land of castles that reflect its complex and rich feudal history. To name but a few, there are castles at Montalto Pavese, Nazzano, Oramala and
Zavattarello. Prominence is also given to music from the four bordering provinces,
traditionally played by the Appenino pipe (bagpipes with only one drone pipe) and the
accordion. There are also many festivals and patron saints’feasts featuring historical
re-enactments. From Voghera, the geographical main town of the Oltrepò Pavese, one
can easily reach important towns such as Castegggio, with its quaint old town section
and the Certosa Cantù, medieval Broni, Stradella with its crenellated tower, the neoclassical
Duomo and famous accordion museum. Then there is Varzi, nestling in the hills of the
upper Valle Staffora, and Salice Terme, famous for its spa waters and also well-known,
throughout Italy, for its spa treatments. Vine-growing is one of the prime agricultural activities in the area. In fact, the Oltrepò Pavese boasts a rich production of DOC and DOCG
wines. In terms of hectares, it is the third largest Italian denomination and also the
largest Italian producer of Pinot noir grapes.
