BAPTISMS Congratulations and God’s blessings to…Amber Briane & Jason Dorris on the Baptism of their daughter, Camryn Ann. WEDDING BANNS III Jacqueline Hoffman & Timothy McGinty LIFE IS CHANGED, NOT ENDED Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord Karl Korponic Marion Richardson The Parish Staff extend best wishes for a Happy New Year 2016 You will find a January Parish Activities Calendar in this weekend’s bulletin. Please “clip-and-keep” it as a handy reminder of what’s happening around St Charles during the first month of the New Year 2016. There were “signs of Christmas” in some stores as early as Labor Day. It seems to me that we heard more about “Black Friday” this year than we did about Thanksgiving. Things really revved up in December: Christmas movies, nostalgic television shows, carols on the radio, cards in the mail, gifts exchanged, and lots of lights and decorations. It all came together, a little more than forty-eight hours ago, on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Sadly, for some, that’s where the celebrations ended. There are already some Christmas trees out on the tree lawns, ready for pick up! In truth, the Christmas season begins on December 24/25 and continues for twelve days until Epiphany Sunday. (Remember that carol “The Twelve Days of Christmas?”) I do not think that one parish bulletin column is going to bring about any major changes in our pre-Christmas practices. Our economy depends too much on what happens at this time of the year. One estimate puts the total spent for Christmas at $750 billion. We do not know for certain on what date Jesus was born. The message of His Passion, Death, and Resurrection were at the heart of the early Gospel message. It was not until the fourth century that the Church began to celebrate His birth. There was a theological reason for this: to emphasize that Jesus shared in our humanity—he was born of a human mother as we all were. The date of Christmas was fixed at the time of a great Roman celebration called “Saturnalia.” That took place at the “darkest” time of the year when daylight was at a minimum. Immediately after Christmas, the days begin to lengthen and the earth comes back to life in the spring…just as Jesus brought new life to this world. LITURGICAL MINISTERS Attention Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion, Lectors, and Altar Servers: Sign up sheets are available in the Sacristy for the Solemnity of Mary. PRE‐CANA DAY Saturday, February20th St. Charles Parish Activity Center Engaged couples preparing for the Sacrament of Marriage are welcome to participate. Please stop in the Parish Office to register. Today’s elaborate decorations and extensive celebrations of Christmas began in nineteenth century England. Prior to that time, Christmas had distinctly religious overtones. Our phrase “Merry Christmas” comes from the 1843 publication of Charles Dickens’s “A Christmas Carol.” The transformation of Ebenezer Scrooge from a sour cynic to generosity and kindness remains a favorite story of mine for this time of year. I deal with lots of different people, every day. But there is a true grace to this time of year. See if you can hang on to some of that good spirit, at least until the formal end of this Christmas season. So again I say… Merry Christmas to all!
