The DR.X exploded on the scene in 2001, and the new 2002 models are poised to do the same. THE most extreme wave sail of this year’s program was refined even more, giving it an elastic feeling and more neutral handling. Therefore, it will meet the demands of a perfect sideshore-/side-onshore engine. Combined with the shortest boom length of all of the NORTH SAILS wave sails the DR.X allows you to boost jumps as well as ride waves aggressively in front of the judge’s eyes. m ax . Difference DR.X – TRIPLE XXX: With the shortest boom of all NORTH SAILS wave models the DR.X is the ultimate high-end sail for radical wave riding. Designer Larry Herbig identified the point where the top of the sail reacts differently to angles of attack and wind gusts. He found he could increase the twisting section(top) of the sail and not affect the power section(bottom). This enabled him to create sails with improved twist, more power and more control. This also enables increased leech tension, improving the low end power. NORTH SAILS roots are in yachting. We became famous for making high tech sails for the most expensive and successful racing yachts. "Continuous development and refinement of new technologies” has always been our motto. When founding NORTH SAILS WINDSURFING this was our first priority. We strive to ensure that performance stands above everything else. Whatever makes you faster, allows more radical windsurfing, or provides easier learning… this makes sense. What only looks good doesn’t. WINDSURF TECHNOLOGY is supposed to serve two purposes: improve the sport and enhance the fun. Remaining true to our roots, here are some of our main features and technical highlights. features 1. There is one thing everyone wants: plane even earlier! Normally achieved with deeper profiles which have a negative effect on handling, our designers solved this problem 2 years ago. They changed the batten distances, the angles and the positions, so that especially in the maneuver-oriented sails the center of effort could be moved down while at the same time supporting the big area around the boom. This batten configuration we call the CROSS.BATTEN.CONCEPT. You will immediately notice it through the X formed by the boom and the batten enabling remarkably more power and superior control through a wide wind range. flairtop Equalizes the gusts. The response to the FLAIR.TOP was so overwhelming, that we will integrate this feature in all sail categories. What worked so well last year in our wave-/freestyle sails we now implement into all 2002 models. Through the unique construction with a lightweight top batten, the top not only twists horizontally but also vertically. So the FLAIR.TOP works like a valve. According to the wind pressure the FLAIR.TOP either releases power or transfers it into acceleration. It doesn’t matter how you rig your sail. The FLAIR.TOP even works with less downhaul tension, when rigged at VTS-min for the best low end. CROSS.BATTEN.CONCEPT you immediately realize by the X formed by the boom and the batten! features 1. 2. features 1. Extreme lightweight top batten 2. 3. C. effect the largest area is actively supported by a batten the pull is lower, where it’s easier to control; this enables designers to put more low end power into the sail without negatively effecting the high end control the sail is much more balanced (especially during maneuvers and jumps) CROSS.BATTEN.CONCEPT avoids the gap in the boom area; perfectly balanced stabilization of the whole sail body, especially in the critical boom area A. Speed-oriented sails need the second batten below the boom to support the large area and to avoid the gap between the board and the sails (close the gap). This has a negative effect on the handling. B. In classic wave sails with the “battenfree” area above- and below the boom the profile starts collapsing earlier, which reduces the wind range. C. CROSS.BATTEN.CONCEPT eliminates both problems: 1. the intelligent batten configuration guarantees the handling of a maneuver sail (just one batten ends below the boom). 2. the diagonal batten supports the instable area around the boom and makes for superior draft stability (no "batten-free” zone in the whole boom area). technical.features 024 page 04 page 04 windsurf technology 2002 boxbatten 3dtechnology 100% profile accuracy. Optimum aerodynamic and absolute profile accuracy are core, quality features for us – 100% accuracy is demanded. This starts during the cutting, where we cut all panels with a laser. Next, the panels are glued together fold free using profile ribs. Only NORTH SAILS uses this technology to keep tolerances to the absolute minimum. Through this 3D.TECHNOLOGY a monocoque body is built up, which exactly corresponds to the final profile and enables problem-free sewing. This guarantees shape… and performance for many years to come. 04 07 Very stiff, very light. Draft movement and bad rig control are definitely avoidable. This is why we have decided to use battens which are a class by themselves. Their stiffness, the 30% decreased weight due to being hollow, and the high breakage-strength make our BOX.BATTENS the best you can get. Plus the thin cross-section improves the aerodynamics compared to tube battens. This is why BOX.BATTENS are extreme in every way: extremely light, extremely stiff, extremely draft stable, extremely high-performing. a) Smooth profile 3D.TECHNOLOGY: Perfectly shaped and smooth profiles are naturally more efficient, producing maximum performance. b) Segmented profile: Segmented, squared profiles, which are generated through ordinary production methods, produce uneven shapes, which can cause drag. 3D SHAPE EDGES a min: low wind conditions, minimum downhaul tension max: overpowered conditions, maximum downhaul tension b visualtrimsystem 05 secretseamshaping Provides effortless acceleration and deep power-reserves. Extremely stiff and direct sails, which demand lots of power to get going and even more to be controlled, are a thing of the past. In this new generation of more elastic profiles, NORTH SAILS leads the way. The 2002 models offer unparalleled acceleration, plenty of power-reserves and neutral handling. Another benefit of the elasticity is the comfort level of these sails, especially in choppy water or overpowered conditions. Tests have shown this leads to smoother rig control and higher performance. SECRET.SEAM.SHAPING has been implemented into all 2002 sail models. 08 min max Perfect trim enables a very wide range of use. Now it’s even faster and easier: 2 dots – one view. VTS acts like a turbo charger making for improved performance and an extended wind range. Just pull the downhaul -according to the wind strength- until the borderline of the loose leech in the top reaches the "min” or "max” mark – off you go. Our patented VTS SYSTEM is that easy to read and tune. NORTH SAILS offers you a large trim range and with only one sail size you are able to cover a wide range of wind conditions. Even top racers like Micah Buzianis and Diada Ruano Moreno rely 100% on the VTS SYSTEM. CENTER CENTER ! 06 harnesslinetrimsystem a a) FLIP ROTATING SYSTEM b) regular RAF Sail fliprotatingsystem b Easy batten rotation is a snap. Everyone knows it: the harder the batten snaps during rotation, the more uncomfortable the handling is. Therefore Kai Hopf has developed the FLIP. ROTATING. SYSTEM for all no-cam sails, eliminating the hated snap during rotation. This was made possible through our CONSTANT.DRIVE.CONCEPT which pre-profiles our sails. So our sails always show profile even without wind pressure enabling the battens to freely rotate behind the mast. 09 Never again will your harness lines be in the wrong position. Stop getting hard forearms and time-consuming trial and error to find the correct harness line position! The individually defined print on the sail shows exactly the right centre-position of your lines. Just position the ends symmetric to the print and the sail will always be perfectly balanced. Especially the freestyle specialists asked for lighter masts, to reduce the overall rig weight, making it easier to control their rigs during crazy maneuvers. Well, ok! Straight into the laboratory, two years of development and well, what do you know! The unexpected is already in production: VIPER AERO the world’s first mast below 1 kg! In contrast to normal carbon masts, the VIPER AERO is manufactured with very expensive Aerospace carbon, normally used in the Aerospace industry or in the production of high quality components for the Americas Cup. In combination with specific resin types and the Pre-preg-autoclave-process we are producing the lightest and most expensive mast the windsurfing world will ever hold in its hands. The TITANIUM.PROTECTION.SHIELD is the new sensation in mast development, used with the VIPER WAVE and VIPER RACE. A super light titanium shield is wound over the top of the carbon. This gives the VIPER a thin coat of titanium, that not only protects the carbon structure from nicks, but UV-light and overheating as well. 02 By the way: the unmistakable DROP.SHAPE and performance benefits are available only from NORTH SAILS. 01 _KC25 martin van geenhoven canadian freestyle champion 2001 dropshape But light weight itself is not enough for an efficient mast. To completely mobilize the power of modern sails, the reflex and bend characteristics are also of decisive importance. That’s why we developed a unique mast geometry, designed to get 100% out of any sail. This special geometry can be identified in seconds through the revolutionary DROP.SHAPE, providing a more harmonious bend curve, a noticable higher draft stability and consequently more performance in the whole wind range. To identify the perfect mast geometry we use a comprehensive and precise measuring technique which, unlike the classic 3-point IMCS-measurement, analyses the curve over the entire length of the mast. It clearly shows that traditional mast shapes are too stiff below the boom which adversely affects the sail’s performance. For the DROP.SHAPE, the exact diameter is specified over the entire mast, to reduce the stiffness below the boom and to obtain the desired increase in stiffness above the boom, resulting in a very balanced stiffness distribution. This prevents the sail profile from deforming, provides better draft stability, easier handling and greater top speed for your sail. Another decisive advantage of the DROP.SHAPE construction is the reduction of the mast diameter to an aerodynamically fully developed size, which makes any discussion about needle masts old hat for us. And as well as optimizing the stiffness, we increased the wall thickness, so DROP.SHAPE masts are not only light, but also very durable. masttechnology viper technology xcellerator technology sting technology The ultimate World Cup technology offers new dimensions regarding per-formance and weight. The secret is the computercontrolled resin-carbon fiber ratio as well as the high compression used during the production (up to 10 tons). With the combination of rolling and the Aerospace pre-preg technology, the amount of resin is reduced and the use of 100% carbon (75% with the VIPER 75) make mast like the VIPER AERO possible, the world’s lightest mast. XCELLERATOR – stands for acceleration. It’s technical specifications guarantee sensational performance and the polished finish attracts everyone’s attention. The CROSS.CARBON.CONSTRUCTION made it possible – a production method used for all XCELERATOR masts. It allows us to define and change the rolling angle, to optimise the specifications over the entire mast and to integrate a super strong, three-dimensional construction for a fast response rate. The story behind the STING is the CARBON.CROSS.WINDING technology where the fibers are woven in a way that provides high quality construction. The fit and the neoprene decide the quality of every wetsuit. To offer you maximum comfort we developed our own neoprene. It surpasses regular neoprene in terms of softness, stretch-ability and durability. We call it NORTH SAILS SAS DURASTRETCH. It’s extremely stretchy, very lightweight, UV-resistant and has a high carbon content to provide a very comfortable and long lasting fit. To reduce the "cooling out” – effect the SAS DURASTRETCH has a special surface structure, which helps reduce the binding of water molecules to the surface of the suit, and lets the water run off faster. Additionally, the surface has excellent abrasion resistance. To provide exceptional comfort a special inner lining is used on many of the panels. This improves heat retention, flexibility and most of all is soft on the skin. sasdurastretch _N44 vidar jensen 1st, wave worldcup vargas 2001 1st, freestyle worldcup costa brava 2000 NWS TEAM 2002: Nik Baker, Vidar Jensen, Orjan Jensen, Sam Ireland, Web Pedrick, Beat Steffan Single lined neoprene 1. 2.
