See you soon… for new adventures 5 1h ...of the ancient medieval city .. teps. s t o o ef in th k l a w 5- Rue Tour Carrée : it got its name from an ancient tower of the city wall. 9- Rue au Blé, remains of the old Cherbourg, where the «marché au blé» (the wheat market) used to take place… After the boulangerie, sink into one of the «Boël» («gut» in old French) which will take you to small courtyards.. The back of the houses of Rue au Blé have all kept their spiral staircase turret with their «éguets» (little windows to watch over the access to the courtyard and light up the tower). 10- Square Phelippot le Cat, you will discover on your left a copper plate telling the story of this resistance fighter during the Hundred Years’ War. 11- Place Centrale and rue au Fourdray between the two windows of the bar « Le Carré », you will see a staircase tower with little windows and drip edges, as well as an inscription in Latin and the date of 1569. There, a Benedictine abbey was founded at the end of the 16th century by the Ravalet family. 12- Rue Grande Rue pass the old salt storehouse (the metal gate after «Lejeté» on the right) or cour des Gables. 13- Rue des Portes : it used to be the only way to enter the medieval fortress. At the Rue du Château crossroads, beware! Two soldiers have been guarding the city for centuries, from the corner of the Bar de l’Etoile. Turn left. 14- Rue des Tribunaux : after the ramparts and the castle were destroyed in 1689, it wasn’t until the 19th century and the « haussmannisation » of the province that squares, beautiful houses and main roads were built. 15- Place de Gaulle : the theatre that was built in 1881 is a 6 good indicator of the city’s prosperity. It was built by a Parisian architect, Charles de Lalande, who specialized in Italian-style theatres and designed the Parisian Théâtre des Nouveautés and Théâtre de la Renaissance. The building follows the eclectic style that was in fashion during the 2nd Empire, and leans on the ancient Halle aux Blés (1832). 6- Rue Noël it used to be called the «Venelle du Cimetière» (the 7- Sainte-Trinité Basilica : it borders the Place «Cemetery Alley») because of the cemetery which bordered the Sainte-Trinité Basilica. Napoléon, its flat chevet leans on the only remaining wall of the city’s forts. It was built in the 11th Century. 8- Place des Moulins to remember the many hand-querns which used to lean on the ramparts. 4- Place de la Révolution : (n°20-22) one of Cherbourg’s most ancient houses (16th century). 3- Rue des Fossés : as Cherbourg Castle’s moats were supplied with sea water, they were cleaned with each tide! Considering they were used as dumps, it surely was convenient! Take the small alley on your right which still has its medieval outline (rows of houses set up randomly with a central gutter). Turn left. 2- Notre Dame Car park : the ancient courtyard of Cherbourg Castle was surrounded by large ramparts and high towers. Where the «Résidence du vieux château» is today, used to be an impregnable strong donjon. In 1689, the ramparts of the city and the castle were destroyed. Exit the car park by going under the Résidence du Vieux Château. Starting Point Tourist Office 14, Quai Alexandre III 1- Quai Alexandre III : in the 18th century, a commercial dock, with a swing bridge and closed by a lock, was built at the end of the Divette estuary. In 1758, the quays and the bridge were destroyed by the last English incursion. Then, the outer-harbour dock and the Caligny quay completed the installations. Today, these two docks are used for fishing and sailing. It was also the set for the famous «Les Parapluies de Cherbourg» film. 7 N ’s OPINIO t r e p x e l Loca L ud o v ic Céc ilia urist adviso r - To Have a beer at the Equipage, on the marina and listen to the breeze blow in the masts ier otel -h Have a picnic at the Etang des Costils, just a few steps away from the Ravalet Castle Renting a Stand Up Paddle in le Becquet de Tourlaville to enjoy the Collignon Beach Taste the famous «Cake au citron» (lemon cake) from the Café Pompon, near the Theatre e istin - Guid e Pretend like you are Captain Nemo aboard Le Redoutable at the Cité de la Mer museum - uise greeters Annie Cr What we like !
