santon (Christmas figurines) capital.
The Foreign Legion Command is based
here. With 1000 years of history, many
cultural events are organised to blend

Auriol
Dominated in the north by the
Regagnas slopes and to the south
by the Sainte-Baume Massif, the
Huveaune flows through the city.
Its rich past is revealed by its
prehistoric remains, the ruins of its
medieval chateau, not to mention its
three Infernet Neolithic caves, ovens
from the Middle Ages and the Clock
Tower. The current population
of Auriol is 11780

TOWNS AND VILLAGES
Belcodène
It may be a small town, but it thinks big, way beyond
its plateau where its famous Celto-Ligurian oppida
are enthroned. Belcodène comes from the Provençal
“Brecouedo” which refers to a high, rugged geography.
Surrounded by pine and oak massifs, the site offers a
magnificent panoramic view, the pride and joy of its
inhabitants. It has a population of 1830.

Cadolive
Nestled on the Baou rock surrounded by pine trees and
bathed in sunshine, this typically Provençal village oozes
authenticity with its shaded squares, old wash house and
narrow streets. This picturesque hamlet, which dates back to
the 17th century, became a town in just 1900. It has a rich
mining background as evidenced by the mine shafts located
on the outskirts of town. It has a population
of 2160 inhabitants.

Cuges-les-Pins
La Bouilladisse
Located in the heart of the Saint-Baume Massif, this hillside
village descended into the plain as the lake which used to fill
this polje, or crater, dried up. Occupied since the Neolithic
period, Cuges-les-Pins experienced rapid growth from 1647
when the road linking Marseilles to Toulon changed course,
allowing access to the town and visits from famous people such
as Victor Hugo and Jospeh Bonaparte. Following the roads of
the old village, you can discover the Chapel of Saint Anthony of
Padua and its incredible viewpoint. It has a population of 4880
inhabitants.
Founded in the 13th century, this village was attached to
Auriol until 1880. Originally known as La Bourine, it took
its current name in 1909. Its rocky hills sculpted by the
mistral and the sun have made La Boudilladisse a pearl of
Provence. The tranquillity of its hamlets such as le Pigeonnier
and les Boyers, its spectrum of colours and the variety of
its landscapes epitomise the sheer beauty of Provence. Its
population is 5960.

La Destrousse
La Penne-sur-Huveaune
Positioned at the crossroads of the Merlançon and Pégoulière
valleys, the first traces of occupation of the site date back to
the 11th century, although Roman roads penetrated the area
in ancient times. The primitive church, St Pierre-es-Liens was
built in 1363, extended in 1834 and then built in its current
form in 1872. From this building, if you take the chemin de
la Carreirade de Pierresca, you will discover an immense
panorama of the surrounding massifs. It has a population
of 2920.
Wedged between Aubagne and Marseilles, this two thousand
year-old town offers a unique viewpoint across the Garlaban
massif. Le Pennelus, which was erected during the 1st
century BC and listed as a historic monument in 1886, bears
witness to Penne sur Huveaune’s rich history; its current
name first appeared in 1212 in the archives of St Victor’s
abbey. In the old centre, close to the Roman monument, you
can also discover its church and its windows which was built
from 1711. It has 6400 inhabitants.

Roquevaire
Peypin
Built around the chateau ruins, Peypin is the quintessential
Provencal village with its houses nestled in the hillside, its
parish church and beautiful clock tower, narrow streets and
flower-filled squares and exposed stone façades. As well as
the chateau remains, there is also the monument dedicated
to the Resistance members’ “Lei Loups Roudaires”, many
relics of the region’s mining past and above all, magnificent
hiking trails dotted with superb viewpoints. It has 5420
inhabitants.
So named because of the rock dominating it, the town is
composed of the main village and three hamlets: Pont de
Joux, Pont de l’Etoile and Lascours. For those who enjoy
exploring by foot, Lascours is the gateway to Marcel Pagnol’s
hills and landscapes. The old village, with its narrow, steep
roads will naturally lead you to its medieval 12th century
chateau, from which you can gaze at the Huveaune Valley.
It has 8620 inhabitants.

TOWNS AND VILLAGES
Saint-Zacharie
Saint-Savournin
Although the settlement of this town dates back to
Neolithic times and its Gallo-Roman remains were
restored in the village and its environs, Saint-Savounin
is best known for its rich industrial past. This is one of
the many municipalities making up Provence’s coalfield,
which began operating in the 16th century. Discover
this exceptional industrial heritage by wandering down
the paths once used by Provençal miners. It has 3180
inhabitants.

At the foothills of the Saint-Baume Massif and on the banks
of the Huveaune sits the village with 16 fountains: SaintZacharie. Occupied during Neolithic times, then by celticligurians and particularly favoured by rich Romains in ancient
times, this sun-bathed haven of tranquillity exudes the rich
colours and flavours of Provence. Discover the enchanting
sites such as the banks of the Huveaune, the Nayes source
or Saint Clair’s Chapel and its viewpoint. It has 4940

The Chapel of the Black Penitents:
Danielle Jacqui’s house:
Located on the heights of the old town, the Chapel of the Black
Penitents also houses Aubagne’s art centre. More than just a venue
for exhibiting visual arts, the Black Penitents offer visitors an insight
into current creations along with displays of the area’s heritage.
Conferences/meetings take place during each exhibition. Depending
on the calendar, the exhibition is also a chance to merge various artistic
disciplines.
In 2013, from the 27 of April to the 13 of October, the exposition
“Picasso, céramiste et la Méditérranée” will take place in the
Chapel of the Black Penitents.
Danielle Jacqui is an artist who has painted and decorated her house in

WALKS AND HIKES
Composed of around 70% natural areas, our territory is resolutely
focused on our 5 great massifs which border and define it. On the
west, the famous Garlaban massif and the Etoile range, and on the
east, the Regagnas and the mystical Saint-Baume to the south of the
Saint-Cyr range.
Garlaban: It is criss-crossed
by numerous paths, especially
Pagnol’s paths which enable
visitors to discover the highlights of
the academic’s literature and films.
Chaîne de l’Etoile: A limestone
massif with large rupestral areas.
Its flora is of great interest with its
rare and endemic species.
around the summits, but none of which is crossed by a watercourse,
except after heavy rains.
Also, each and every municipality in the Pays d’Aubagne et de l’Etoile
conurbation offers a range of walking opportunities; the mining
country, the sources of the Huveaune, the Languillard plateau, the
Celto-Ligurian oppida etc.
Throughout the year, the
intermunicipal tourist office offers
guided and walks and hikes. Ask
for a “Visits, tours and trips” book
or download it at www.tourismepaysdaubagne.fr.

Le Regagnas: This is the western
end of the Aurélien Massif, situated
in the Var. This range presents
ecological interest, especially due
to its rupestral biotopes which
harbour large nesting raptors.
Sainte-Baume: Its northern
slope is unique in Provence as it
receives a lot of rainfall and is covered in moist vegetation, consisting
of deciduous leaves and boxwood. The cliffs are home to the Marie
Madeleine cave, a place of pilgrimage. The south side is characterised
by a gentle slope with plenty of sunlight and dry vegetation.
Saint-Cyr Range: This massif, consisting solely of limestone, is cut
by numerous valleys which bring about a star-shaped drainage system

Hiking festival “from villages to hills”
The Pays d’Aubagne et de l’Etoile plays host to a hiking festival. The
Garbalan is the most popular, but equally impressive are the Nayes
sources in Saint Zacharie, the peaks of Saint Julien, the breathtaking
scenery of Sainte-Baume or even the paths of the mining country.
Each year, dozens of hikes of varying degrees of difficulty and duration
are on offer. Soak up the history of the towns and villages of the Pays
d’Aubagne et de l’Etoile before you set off on their paths to discover
their natural settings.
Every year at the beginning of May
Brochure available in March at the Intermunicipal Tourist Office of the

MARKETS
Markets
The Pays d’Aubagne et de l’Etoile nurtures
its agricultural heritage. It has been
promoting the sustainability of peri-urban
agriculture in playing a significant role in
the economic area, especially due to the
brand «Les Jardins du Pays d’Aubagne».
Among these measures (the territory has
1500 hectares of fertile land), the area is
working on facilitating the creation of new
farms. This is reflected by an agricultural
charter setting several goals to reconcile
harmonious economic development and
quality production.

THE LAND OF CLAY
The Pays d’Aubagne has been home
to a long tradition of clay work since
antiquity. This culture is common
to the whole Huveaune Valley: in
Aubagne, the craft is very diversified
(porcelain, stoneware, polished
and varnished clay, earthenware, figurines), earthenware in Roquevaire
and Pont de l’Etoile, common and
architectural pottery in Saint Zacharie
and bricks and tiles in Auriol.
Museums and workshops:
The Pays d’Aubagne has nearly sixty ceramicist,
santonnier (figurine makers) or potter workshops.
Do not hesitate to push open their doors and
discover a wealth of ancestral know-how and
unparalleled friendliness.
The list of ceramic artisans and santonniers is
available at the Pays d’Aubagne et de l’Etoile
