MAYOR’S MESSAGE
Kids active in sports, such as minor hockey, learn
valuable life lessons such as fairness, self-discipline,
dealing with stress and setting goals. These lessons
benefit kids in whatever course they set in life.
Hard work, dedication and devotion by players,
coaches, parents, officials, volunteers and fans are
what make minor hockey in North Battleford such a
success.
Best wishes in all future hockey endeavours.
Ian Hamilton
Mayor

Whether you are a player, a parent, a fan, a coach or a volunteer,
it takes a great deal of effort and enthusiasm and I commend you
for all your support!

Town of Battleford
AAA Stars Bast works towards WHL return
By Craig Beauchemin
Going undrafted in
the Western Hockey
League bantam draft
isn’t something an
aspiring hockey player
hopes to go through.
Spencer Bast lived
through just that when
he wasn’t selected in
the 2012 draft, despite
a solid bantam season
scoring 29 goals and 29
assists in just 21 games
with the West Central
Wheat Kings.
Shortly after the
disappointment,
the
Kamloops Blazers came
calling.
“A couple months
after the draft I got
picked up by them,”
Bast said. “The past two
years I attended training
camp with them.”
June 29, 2012 the
Blazers listed Bast
making
him
their
property, and allowing
him to come to their
training camp without
being signed to a
contract.
The past two years
Bast has been a key
contributor for the
Battlefords
AAA
Stars, scoring 19 times
and adding 16 assists
during the 2012-13
season, before nearly
doubling that output the
following year, with 31
goals and 37 assists in
2013-14.
It was his performance
in the postseason last
year that made the
Blazers decide Bast was
worth committing to.
“I think the playoffs
last year, he had a
heck of a playoffs,”
North Battleford, Saskatchewan
ALL-STAR MUSIC
Neil Gamble
musicman
1-306-445-0098
1-306-441-1217
said Blazers GM Craig
Bonner. “Ten games
with 21 points, kudos
for him for having such
a good playoffs and he
deserved a contract.”
Officially committed
to the WHL and the
Blazers, the real work
began.
“There’s a lot of
people, and they were
looking for people
who could contribute,”
Bast said of this years
training camp. “I had
to go and work every
day because every day
was a competition, and
if you take one day off
you could be gone the
next.”
His hard work during
camp paid off, as he
made the Blazers out of
training camp to begin
the season.
He made his WHL
debut Sept. 26 in
Victoria against the
Royals, a game he won’t
soon forget.
“It was great, the
atmosphere was great,”
he smiled. “It’s crazy
playing in front of that
many people. It’s just a
high tempo game, it was
a good experience.”
Bast was a -1 in an
8-2 Blazers win over
the Royals in front of
5,527 fans at the SaveOn-Foods
Memorial
Arena.
While he made the
team to begin the year,
he found himself out
of the lineup far more
often than he was in, as
he appeared in just six
of the Blazers 21 games
before being reassigned
to the Stars on Nov. 11.
“It’s tough, you
expect that you’re
playing when you go to
the rink,” Bast admitted.
“Then you find out that
you’re sitting so you just
have to tough it out and
try and practice and see
if you can make it into
the next game.”
He learned some
valuable lessons during
his time in major junior,
however.
“You can’t take even a
second off,” he warned.
“In one second the guy
beats you and it’s in the
back of your own net.”
While he wasn’t happy
with the demotion, he
doesn’t plan to sulk his
way back to Kamloops.

Bast works towards return
Continued from Page 2
“I was disappointed,”
Bast said. “But I definitely
think I can develop more in
this league. I wasn’t playing
that much so I think it was
a good choice by him to
send me down and see if
I can get a little better for
next year.”
Making the jump from
midget AAA to major
junior shows a player what
they need to work on to be
a regular at the next level.
“It’s a league of men that’s
for sure,” he said. “I have
to get bigger and faster,
take this year, build up and
go back next year.”
Bonner says he liked
what he saw during Bast’s
short time in Kamloops,
but he’s looking forward
to seeing what he can do
when he gets older.
“He’s a very competitive
guy,” he said. “What we
told him is in order to come
here next year to have
more success he has to get
physically stronger. He has
to train harder, he has to
put on some weight and get
quicker to be an effective
player in our league.”
Bonner also had some
goals for Bast to achieve
after he told him he was
sending him back to North
Battleford.
“Go back, be a leader,”
he said. “We expect him to
be one of their best players,
if not their best player this
year. This summer is going
to be huge for him. He’s a
great kid and we want him
to be a part of our team, but
like I said he’s going to have
to get bigger, stronger and
quicker if he wants to have
success in our league.”
Though he has missed
games due to some
injures and call-ups to the
Humboldt Broncos, Bast
is second on the Stars in
points per game with 21
points through just 18
games as of Jan. 23.
It’s not often general
managers get the chance to
travel to see their prospects
play, but Bonner was able
to do just that when he
went to Calgary for the
Mac’s Tournament in late
December.
“I saw him at the Mac’s in
two games and I thought he
played very well,” Bonner
said.
Since he’s now 18 years
old, this is Bast’s final
season as a member of the
Stars and he’ll either be a
member of the Broncos or
Blazers next season.

President’s Message
Battlefords
Minor Hockey
Association
Once again, we find ourselves at our local rinks for another hockey season. Be it your
child’s first or 10th hockey season, it helps to make the long, cold winter months pass
quickly. Hockey is a part of life for all in our association. It’s a great opportunity to make
new acquaintances, grow friendships and above all have fun.
On behalf of Battlefords Minor Hockey, I would like to thank the News Optimist for their
commitment to minor hockey by publishing the Minor Hockey Week Special Edition. This
provides our association with an opportunity to showcase our players and the people
who dedicate countless hours to our youth in the Battlefords and surrounding area.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank our Coaches, Staff, and Directors for their
hard work and dedication throughout the season. Their time and dedication to BMHA
ensures the overall success of the organization. Each and every year we are faced with
numerous issues and challenges. We continue to move forward addressing and make
improvements to the organization as a whole.

Battlefords Minor Hockey has purchased an electronic scheduling program that will
assist us in ensuring we are getting the maximum value for our members. In the near
future we will be having our ice allocations schedules running on a monitor in each rink.
This will allow the opportunity for our members to ensure they attend the correct location
and if not, what location they should be at. This is something that is very long overdue
and will be a welcome addition to our association. We will also be looking to streamline
and modernize our yearly fees as well as our registration. The board is committed to
modernizing our association and ensuring that we are proficient and progressive.
Director, Initiation Division
The Bauer First Shift Program was a first for the Battlefords and a huge success.
Bauer provided full equipment at a very affordable cost to children who had never before
played hockey. We were able to introduce the game to 45 kids from the Battlefords
and area. Our hope is some of these children will be back next year as part of the
association. The Battlefords was also selected as a location for the Hockey Canada
Century Tour. This was an exciting opportunity that brought a little piece of the Hockey
Hall of Fame to our area for one day. This event brought people out from all over the
area to see the displays contained within an expandable semi unit in the parking lot of
the Civic Centre.
In closing, it is important to recognize all of our coaches who teach, our parents
who sacrifice, and our officials who allow games to be played. There are numerous
challenges ahead and we ask for the patience, support, and suggestions of our members
as we move forward. While the challenges are numerous, they are not insurmountable,
progress is being made. Thank you for your patience and we eagerly look forward to
the future.

North Stars’ Sych has bright future no matter his path
By Craig Beauchemin
Sports Reporter
Connor Sych has a tough
decision to make at end of the
2014-15 season.
Should the North Battleford
native sign with the Western
Hockey League’s Edmonton Oil
Kings, who drafted him in the
ninth round of the 2012 bantam
draft? Or should he return to the
Battlefords North Stars and look
for an NCAA scholarship?
A tough decision, but one most
18-year-old hockey players would
love to be facing.
If the 6’4’’ 190 pound
defenceman goes the major junior
route, he would be ineligible to
receive an NCAA scholarship as
the NCAA considers major junior
hockey to be professional.
It’s not as though Sych would
be throwing an education out the
window, however.
For every year a player plays
major junior the Canadian Hockey
League pays one year of tuition at
a Canadian university.
Since he was born in 1998, Sych
has three years of major junior
eligibility left, as opposed to a
four-year scholarship he would
receive from the NCAA.
Despite his obvious talent on
the ice, Sych always remains
humble.
“I wasn’t expecting that,” he
said when asked about when he
was drafted to the WHL. “I was
actually home sick from school
and I was watching online who
was getting drafted. I watched a
couple of my friends go, and then
I hit refresh and my name was at
the bottom of the screen.”
Even though he was just drafted by the
team that won the WHL championship, he
wasn’t jumping up and down like you might
expect.
“I just kind of sat down and talked to
myself about it,” he said. “Some of the kids
at school were watching it on their phones,
so word got around before I even talked to
my parents.”
In fact, it was his mom calling him to
confirm the rumours.
“She actually called me because she heard
from another teacher that I got drafted,” he
admitted.
It’s not just the Oil Kings who saw his
talent at a young age.
“In bantam,” North Stars head coach and
general manager Kevin Hasselberg said
when asked when he first noticed Sych.

on his future either.
“I told the Oil Kings from the
start of the year that I wanted to
play here and finish school,” he
said. “Play at home for a year and
then make a decision at the end of
the year as to what path I’m going
to take.”
Oil Kings general manager
Randy Hansch was reached out to,
but declined to comment.
It’s not just the Oil Kings who
are waiting for a decision either.
“Our job is to develop players,”
Hasselberg said. “We educate our
guys on what the best options for
them could be and it’s up to him
and his family at the end of the
day.

This is Sych’s first season in the SJHL, but
he’s attended a few camps with the Oil Kings

“I went to two development camps in the

camps,” he said. “It’s a first class organization,
everyone is treated extremely well. Busy
days but nothing you can’t get through.”

Just like off the ice, he’s calm on the ice
as well.
“Nothing phases him,” Hasselberg said.
