Whitestone Conservation Association (WCA) is an independent organization representing
Cottage Association members and area residents of the Municipality of Whitestone
on environmental issues. We work closely with the Municipality and Council, but are not
part of the Municipal organization. For more information, please call any one of our
members listed in our Directory, and join us to protect our beautiful countryside and lakes.

Greetings from Larry Samis, WCA Chair
Whitestone Conservation Association members continue to
monitor water quality in Lorimer Lake and Whitestone Lake.
Last year we added Limestone Lake. We assume that the water
quality in surrounding lakes will be the same, however, if you
would like your lake tested, contact me at ljsamis @gmail.com.
and we will arrange a time and date to do this. The Secchi dish
gives us a visibility of just over 3 meters which fits the tropic level of 2 to 4 meters for
our lakes. Phosphate and nitrate levels are low which indicates that the majority of
waterfront properties have good septic systems and have cut down on the use of
household phosphates. You may notice in late June and early July a lot of algae in your
lake .This is most likely due to the spring runoff during which a larger than usual volume
of naturally produced phosphates and nitrates are released. That along with pollen from
shrubs and trees temporarily produces more algae. This should clear up by August.
Acidity levels, oxygen content, and conductivity remain constant and about where they
should be. Keep up the good work and help us maintain healthy lakes in our area.
We are still concerned about the use of wakeboats in our waterways. Wakeboats are
boats that have a bladder in the back end which when filled with water causes the boat
to plow through the water creating a large wake sometimes 3 to 5 feet high. Our lakes
are not wide enough to handle these large wakes. These wakes cause erosion to the
shoreline, damage to boats and docks, as well as drowning out waterfowl nesting sites.
We are not against wake boarding, just the use of wake boats. For more information on
this topic see “Watch Your Wake” at Muskoka Watershed Council or the Ministry of
Natural Resources (www.mnr.gov.on.ca).
Please encourage your neighbours and visitors to use our recycling facilities. Remember,
once our landfill sites are full then our municipality has to purchase a new site.
Our meetings are held at the Royal Canadian Legion in Dunchurch, on May 14th,
June 11th, and Oct 8th, at 7 PM. As well our Annual General Meeting will be held
on July 11th at 10 AM at the Knox United Church. Guest speakers will be announced
at a later date.

The WCA Scholarship Bursary
In our thirteenth year to award the Whitestone Bursary Award, a $250 scholarship
was presented to local secondary school students who are pursuing a
post-secondary education in an environmental field of studies.
The scholarship was awarded to:
James Payne – Almaguin Highland Secondary School
Tristyn Sandy – Parry Sound High School
We are proud of the effort of these students and wish
them great success in their environmental endeavours.
Property-Owner Associations

The Municipality of Whitestone is home to approximately 900
permanent and 4,500 seasonal residents. Many areas have banded
together to form organizations with a common goal – protecting
and conserving the environment. Fish management and water
quality issues are being addressed on an annual basis. Through
participation in the Lake Partners Program these organizations
keep well informed of the ever increasing environmental concerns
that affect all property owners in Ontario.

The Council of the Municipality of Whitestone would like to welcome you and your
family to our community. We sincerely hope that you enjoy all of the activities that
our municipality has to offer!
Located in the District of Parry Sound, the Municipality of Whitestone is a large,
lake strewn area, dominated by white pine trees and these features, along with
its proximity to Southern Ontario, make Whitestone an appealing recreation
community and has something for all ages, all year long! Spring brings the budding
of flowers and trees with the warm fresh air, sap starts to run, keeping the local
maple syrup producers busy. Summer is perfect for boating, fishing and swimming
in any of the sparkling inland lakes and rivers. In the Fall, the colourful scenery
is stupendous with bright yellow, red and orange leaves, it’s the perfect time for
hunting, ATVing, hiking, colour excursions and so much more. In the Winter,
there is plenty of snow to go around, regardless of your preference for winter
sports, such as snowmobiling, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, skating or
ice fishing, not to mention the scenery the snow provides!
Our Official Plan sets forth the general policies that guide the physical growth
of the Municipality and promotes sustainable economic development in a healthy
natural environment. With our extensive trails and open parks, the Municipality

access to the landfill sites outside of regular hours of operation.
Section 2.7 of By-Law No. 15-2005 states that “No person shall deposit any
waste at or near, or outside or around the landfill gates except in the appropriate
areas for waste and/or recycling receptacle.” and; Pursuant to Section 5
of the said By-Law, fines shall be as follows: Maximum fine of $5000.00
Leaving your garbage at the gate creates a potential hazard for everyone,
increases operating costs for the landfill sites and after the bears
and raccoons tear through the garbage it is an unsightly mess.

Dunchurch United Church Women:
Meet monthly throughout the year for Christian
fellowship and fund raising for Knox United Church.
The annual Thanksgiving Dinner, on the Saturday
of Thanksgiving, Christmas Bazaar and Yard Sale

Whitestone Horticultural Society
The Society was formed to encourage interest and improvements in horticulture in our community. We have taken over flower planting and care at
our three cemeteries and at the Old Fire Hall, as well as
the flower boxes throughout the Village of Dunchurch.
Membership is $10.00 a year and includes a program
book with a calendar of events for the year. The
monthly meetings are held at the Dunchurch
Community Centre – the 1st Wednesday of the
month, April – October – see calendar for exact date.
We have guest speakers at every meeting. The general
public is invited to attend. The Annual General Meeting will be on the 3rd Wednesday of November at 8:00pm at the Dunchurch

Ardbeg Community Club
Supports the Community Hall through fundraisers. Crafts are made
every Tuesday from May to October. (Hall closed in the winter months.)

Meets every Monday at 6:30pm at the Multi-Purpose Room of Knox United.
This group provides support to help maintain a healthy lifestyle by
promoting good eating habits and the benefits of exercise. Please contact

Whitestone Historical Society
This group was formed to foster the recognition of the unique heritage,
and to encourage its preservation, of the Municipality of Whitestone and
the surrounding area. The Society also produces an annual Historical
Calendar featuring historical photos of our area; some calendars from
previous years are still available as collector’s items. DVD sets featuring
historic pictures of Dunchurch with descriptive commentary and now
available. The Society will have a display at the Dunchurch Agriculture
Society’s Fall Fair in August. For more information please contact

Whitestone Rod & Gun Club
Meets at 7:30pm on the 4th Wednesday September to May at North
Landing. Through its Annual Fishing Derby, the club promotes fishing
for the young and “young at heart.” Held on the first Saturday of the March
Break, this event raises money toward education in hunting and fishing,
plus towards fish restocking and hatcheries in the area. Six lakes in the
area have been stalked with 500 speckled trout in each lake and they
seem to be doing well. For more information call President Murray Chambers

The Whitestone McKellar Lions Club
The Whitestone McKellar Lions Club formerly (“Dunchurch Lions Club”) has been serving
the Whitestone and McKellar area continuously since it’s inception since the 9 March 1972.
Funds are raised from returnable bottles and can collected at the Auld’s Road Landfill
Site, Crown & Anchor at 3 fall fairs, donations from the public, donations from
Parry Sound business, local organizations, the Municipality of Whitestone, etc.
Historically, the Lions Club has provided Christmas Baskets, food and gifts, for needy families and
assistance to persons/families throughout the year. Donations are also made in support of local interests
and organizations such as Camp Dorset, Camp Huronda and Whitestone & Area Nursing Station.
Working with Whitestone Lake Public School staff and involvement with youth is a high priority
for our club. In the past play ground equipment was purchased and we continue to support our youth
through an annual Bike Rodeo, Vision Screening, free swimming lessons, etc.
On a broader scale the Lions Club supports a number of programs for the blind, swimming programs for
persons in need of physical exercise, support for people throughout the world, in time or crisis, such as
earth quakes, floods, famines, etc.
In order to maintain the level of service to our Community, we desperately need new members.
Join the Lions! Be a part of this generous and worthwhile Community organization.

Please be advised that the Corporation of the Municipality of Whitestone
will be recycling at Auld’s Road and York Street Landfill Sites.
Materials will be separated into Three (3) Streams
