Man Fatally Shot
By Linda Cicoira
The death of an Exmore man last weekend was
ruled a homicide by the Norfolk Medical Examiner’s
Office, a spokesperson for the agency said Tuesday.
James Craig Parks, 33, of Jackson Street died
from gunshot wounds to the chest and abdomen on
May 30, according to autopsy results.
Exmore Police Chief Angelo DeMartino reported
that members of Parks’ family found his body on
Saturday afternoon. They went there after being unable to contact him. DeMartino said Parks was shot
and killed “in the early morning hours” that day.
There was no sign of a struggle at the house where
Parks lived alone. DiMartino would not say where in
the house he was killed or if a weapon was found,
since police are continuing to investigate the incident. No one has been arrested.
Police also do not believe there is a connection
with the murder of another Exmore man last February. No arrest has been made in that case either.

Three animal activists were indicted Monday by
an Accomack grand jury on felony counts of stealing
a dog from a Hopeton man’s yard last January.
Charlene Boyajian, 45, and Bettina Cuce Rodriquez, 39, both of Virginia Beach, and Gordon “Shotgun” A. Shell, 45, a former mixed martial arts fighter
from Detroit, Mich., are accused of the larceny.
In April, Daniel Melendez, testified in General District Court that he did not give permission for his pit
bull, Chico, to be taken to Virginia Beach. The dog was
tied to a tree and has not been seen by Melendez since.
A neighbor, Sandy Mears, said the dog would have
“starved to death” had she not stepped up. She testified that she and her future daughter-in-law, Courtney Chelo, delivered Chico to a convenience store in
Virginia Beach on Jan. 11, 2015, so the dog could be
provided with a “good home.” They said they were
unable to tell the court who the new owner was.
Horace Hall, another neighbor, said he saw the
defendants take Chico and put him in a crate in the
back of a U-haul truck.
“I stopped because I knew that dog did not belong
to them,” Hall testified. “I … asked if they had permission to take the guy’s dog.” He said the man who
had gotten in back of the truck began to bang on the
wall and yelled that they needed to go.
Sgt. Anthony Bright of Accomack County Sheriff’s
Office (ACSO) gave information about the case to the
grand jury.
In another case, Custis Ames Jr., 25, with addresses on Holly Ridge Drive in Melfa and Peach Street in
Cape Charles, was indicted on two counts of abuse
and neglect of a child and a count of felony eluding
on Feb. 28. Court records state Ames drove at speeds
up to 90 miles an hour with two small children unsecured in the car.
“I could hear children crying,” wrote Cpl. E.J. Nottingham of ACSO. “I observed a 4-year-old male in the
front passenger seat, not in a child seat or seat belt and

Transit bus, “causing the ambulance
to lose control and overturn several
times,” Anaya said.
Surran and two other squad members, who were not identified, suffered
non-life threatening injuries. The bus
did not have any passengers at the time
of the crash, the sergeant said. Jeanne
K. Moore, 52, of Pungoteague, was driving the bus and was not injured.
A State Police reconstruction team
was called to the scene to investigate,
Anaya reported. “Currently the accident is still under investigation and
charges are pending after consultation
with the Commonwealth Attorney’s
Office.”
Bloxom Fire Chief Jody Bagwell said
he is waiting for an insurance adjust-
er to estimate damages to the ambulance. Replacement would cost about
$180,000 without equipment. The ambulance was staffed with county public
safety workers when it crashed.
Bagwell said the company has only one working ambulance now since
another vehicle also needs repair. “It
will have a little bit of an impact on us.
We’ll just have to rely on mutual aid,”
he said.
Star Transit attorney Mary Gayle
Holden declined to comment on the
cost of damages to the bus.
Eastern Shore 9-1-1 Director Jeff
Flournoy reported that units from
Melfa, Onancock, Parksley, Painter,
Wachapreague and Onley responded
to the scene.

Free Ground Water Summit
Slated for June 16, Open to Public
Ground water is the sole source of
drinking water on the Shore and its
sustainability and quality are essential for residents.
The June 16 Central Accomack
Ground Water Summit will be an educational forum that will seek to answer the question, “Is there enough
water to support our community for
generations to come?”
The summit also will explore other topics crucial to understanding
groundwater conditions specifically focusing on Accomac, Parksley, Bloxom,
Hallwood, and surrounding areas.
Participants will learn where their
water comes from, how and when it got
there, what is being done to ensure its
quality, and the threats to our future
water supply and quality. Other presentations will touch on the area’s geologic evolution, and what is —and is
not — known about the resource.
The Eastern Shore of Virginia
Ground Water Committee invites the
public to this free seminar on Tuesday,
June 16, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at Metompkin Elementary School at 24501 Parksley Road in Parksley.
Britt McMillan, consulting hydrogeologist to the Eastern Shore Ground
Water Committee, and Curt Smith, director of planning for the AccomackNorthampton Planning District Commission, will conduct the summit and
respond to questions from the audience. There will be ample opportunity for participation from local government officials and the public.
This event is the fourth in a series
of community-focused ground water
summits presented by the Ground
Water Committee. The next and final
summit is scheduled for October 2015
and will focus on northern Accomack
County communities from Hallwood to
New Church, including Chincoteague,
Saxis, Wallops, and Greenbackville.

for emptying the dumpster — were
the last remaining piece, and that is
where Waste Watchers stepped up.
The group, which advocates for responsible waste disposal and is a local affiliate of Keep America Beautiful, pledged $600 toward the cost of
tipping fees to dispose of the debris at
the county landfill.
Marilyn Ailes, president of Waste
Watchers, said, “Waste Watchers is
pleased to participate in this first effort
of a derelict removal program. So much
of our economy is based on our beauty
and our clean water; we invite everyone
to help us preserve our Shore.”
During the last week in April, Duncan and Bowden coordinated with
Thomas to place the dumpster onsite
and begin the clean-up effort. Over the
course of a week, the materials were
loaded into the dumpster and three
dumpster loads were transported to
the landfill for proper disposal. Work
was completed on April 30.
“Since this property is located at
a traffic signal, and across the street
from Arcadia Middle and High School,
it is a very welcome sight to see the debris removed and the property cleanedup,” said Board of Supervisors Chairwoman Reneta Major.
She said it could not have happened without all parties involved. “I
would like to thank Mr. Thomas, Waste
Watchers, County Public Works, and
Building and Zoning staff for their efforts in making this improvement effort happen,” Major said. “What impresses me most about this effort is
that it was done cooperatively and it
took a great deal of coordination and
initiative.”

building removal in Accomack County,

Cheriton
West
Town Council accepted applications for
the seat over the past month
and voted 5-0 this week to select
Mary Mears to complete Diggs’
term until the May 2016 elections.
Council also discussed the FY16
budget and scheduled a work session
on it for June 17 at 7 p.m.
Cheriton
By Ron West
Exmore Town Council gave a resounding “no” to plans by the county’s
Public Service Authority (PSA) to install a wastewater line from the area
south of Cheriton to the wastewater facility in Cape Charles.
The PSA originally investigated
plans for wastewater lines in the Nassawadox–Exmore area, referred to
as the Northern Node, and a smaller
Southern Node in the Cheriton area.
Costs for each node were in the millions, beyond the assets of the county,
which devised a tax structure to cover
the costs. As projected costs for property
owners were provided, fewer and fewer
expressed a desire to receive the service.
County resident David Boyd urged
council to oppose any pipeline in the
county due to the high cost. He spoke
of earlier meetings during which the
vast majority of speakers opposed the
project, while the town leaders of Cape
Charles saw it as a way to help pay for
its wastewater facility.
Silver Beach resident Bob Meyers
stated that the Board of Supervisors’
efforts to push the project forward and
the excessive tax that would fund it
were unfair to the majority of county
residents. He added that the engineering and surveying company of Hurt &
Proffitt stands to make a large windfall
if the planned project were built.
Debbie Campbell likewise said she
does not support the PSA’s plan. She
urged council to send a resolution to the
Board of Supervisors opposing the plan.
Wardtown resident Ken Dufty spoke
at length on the need to end funding for
the PSA’s wastewater project. He tied
the pumping of treated wastewater overboard in Cape Charles to the loss of water
in the aquifer, which would put the county at risk of a water shortage. “When the
water is gone, we can’t get it back,” Dufty
stated, noting that PSA policies mandate
that in order for it to be disbanded, all
parties must agree to do so.
Taylor Dukes, the Exmore representative to the PSA, noted that he and
the representative from Cheriton were
the only members of the PSA who voted not to continue the Southern Node
project. He asked council to provide direction on his future votes on the matter, after which council voted 6-0 to oppose the Southern Node project.
Town Manager Robert Duer reported that town finances continue to be on
solid ground.
He said Virginia Department of
Transportation plans to pave Main
Street, but it is the responsibility of the
town to add the proposed crosswalks
at Westview Avenue and in the area of
the Yellow Duck Café.
Police Chief Angelo DiMartino reported that income from traffic citations continues to increase, with the
total for the past fiscal year exceeding
$500,000.
Council voted unanimously to allow additional broadband antennas on
the town’s water tank. The applicant
agreed to pay the town $2,500 per year
for the use.

Health Matters Calling All Cancer Survivors
R
iverside Shore Cancer
Center (RSCC) in Nassawadox will observe National
Cancer Survivors’ Day Monday,
June 8, with an open house.
From 8:30 a.m. through 3:30
p.m., survivors can visit the center, ring the Bell of Hope, receive a commemorative bell ornament, and enjoy light refreshments and gifts.
This 28th annual event is a national celebration of “life after a
cancer diagnosis” for those who
have survived, an inspiration
for those recently diagnosed, a
gathering of support for families
touched by cancer, and an opportunity for communities to learn
more about cancer in general and
specifically about the survivorship resources in the area.
On the Shore, the RSCC partners with the American Cancer
Society and local healthcare
agencies to provide support for
survivors from the time of diagnosis through recovery and
back to everyday health.
As a community-based cancer care facility, RSCC provides
medical oncology, which treats
cancer with chemotherapy and
other cancer-fighting drugs, hormones and pain reduction medications, and radiation oncology,
which uses beams of radiation to
destroy or damage cancer cells.
Along with cancer surgery, these
treatments may be used individually or in combination.
RSCC is a resource for the entire Shore community and welcomes inquiries about services,
which include:
•medical oncology & infusion;
•radiation therapy;
•newest chemotherapy drugs;
•advanced treatment;
•the latest in anti-nausea
medications;
•blood and platelet transfusions;
•intravenous antibiotics;
•IV therapy for dehydration;
•pre-treatment education, so
patients know what to expect;
•nutrition counseling;
•support services.
The RSCC includes a resource center located off the
lobby. The center includes a variety of books, brochures and
videos related to cancer. It also offers Internet access to assist patients in their search for
information about clinical trials
— carefully controlled research
studies that evaluate promising
new treatments or procedures. The resource center at RSCC
is also the location for support
group meetings held by American Cancer Society volunteers.
RSCC services are accredited by the Commission on Cancer of the American College of
Surgeons. This distinction is
achieved by only 25 percent of
cancer care facilities nationwide. In addition, the cancer pro-
gram has been awarded the Outstanding Achievement Award by
the Commission on Cancer. RSCC also has earned the
Gold Seal of Approval from the
Joint Commission, the nation’s
leading healthcare accreditation and quality monitoring
organization.

The Spark Never Burns Out
Story and photo by Ron West
Cheriton Fire Department icon
Lawrence West reaches a milestone in
his volunteer firefighting career this
month as he steps down as the company’s longest standing chief engineer.
At the age of 18, West was one of the
charter members of the department
when it was founded on Feb. 13, 1948.
Three years later, he was elected chief
engineer, a position he has held for the
past 63 years. West said he originally
was named engineer because he knew
how to work on the trucks. While growing up in Cheriton, he had worked in
his father’s small grocery store before
starting a small trucking company and
then returning to assume ownership
of the grocery store, which he operated
until he retired.
Cheriton’s first truck was a 1928
Chevrolet hand-me-down pumper purchased from Eastville Fire Department for $500. West chuckled when he
noted that the truck was an open cab
and they acquired it in the winter.

West said he and his father joined
to help out the community. He said his
first fire call was to the Cherrystone
area for a vehicle fire. Back then, fire
calls came in at a rate of two or three
per week.
Changes have occurred in the fire
service in the past century, most for
the better, according to West. He spoke
of the importance of firefighter equipment, in particular the self-contained
breathing apparatus (SCBA), or air
packs that firefighters now don as they
enter a burning structure. West noted
that communications have improved
dramatically over the years.
When the department was first
formed, radios were rare among
small volunteer fire departments.
Instead, West said that a person in
need of the fire department called the
phone operator who then activated a
relay for numbers of the volunteers.
If a volunteer firefighters were out
on a call and needed more assistance,
they had to locate a phone and call
the operator to get an additional department alerted.
West said he has probably “engineered” for about 20 trucks for the department since it was founded.
While he will hand off the “wrenches” as chief engineer to another member, West said he intends to stay
around to help in any way he can, be
it fundraising, bingo, or helping with a
call or two.
Helping others has been a calling
for West, and his one regret is having
to see a person lose everything to a fire
when, despite all their efforts, the department was unable to prevent it.

Pony Baseball, Jacket Soccer Making Deep Runs
C
hincoteague’s Cinderella season is
still alive as the Ponies are slated
to face off with Lancaster today at
home at 4 p.m.
The Ponies, 20-0, showed their resiliency in the playoffs, trailing Surry
in the conference championship 1-0
entering the final inning, then battling
for two runs in a walk-off win that
warmed the hearts of the Chinco faithful who have been attending the games
this season.
Then, in the regional opener Monday, Chincoteague trailed 4-0 after the
top of the first inning. The outlook appeared bleak to many, but the Ponies
bounced back with two runs in the
first, two more in the second and four
in the third while holding Middlesex
scoreless the rest of the way.
Larry Chance, an athlete I covered
many years ago at Atlantic, coached at
various levels and now works with many
of the Shore’s top baseball players in the
off-season with the help of his son, Cody.
Chance has followed the Ponies
closely this season. “This is a very
good group of kids who have played together over the years and also believe
in working hard in the winter toning
their craft and not just picking up a
baseball when it comes time to try out,”
said Chance recently. “All the credit
should go to the players, parents, and
the coaching staff of the Ponies.”
During the game Monday, Denise
Bowden, a former co-worker, leaned
over and said a truism I had thought of
several times this season. “Greg Merritt would have loved watching this
team this season.”
Greg covered sports for 25 years
on the Eastern Shore and enjoyed
watching all the Shore teams advance
through the playoffs. He was there
for some memorable moments when
Photos by Jacque Derrickson
Above, Chincoteague players congratulate Spencer White, who had a
two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning to give the Ponies
a 2-1 win in the conference championship. At right, Collin Derrickson
jumps in the arms of Coach Will Thompson following the walk-off win.
Shore teams captured state championships, but he was a Chincoteaguer
at heart and really never saw his old
high-school team advance so deep into
the playoffs in any sport before he died
from ALS last summer.
With Chincoteague, you seem to get a
different hero every time out. Trey Fisher has been the stalwart pitcher on the
mound for the Ponies, but Collin Derrickson came through with a gritty performance Monday. And against Surry, it
was Spencer White, batting seventh in
the lineup, who hit the game-winning
single after Dylan and Ryan Mason and
Joe Thornton loaded the bases.
Coach Will Thompson, who once
played on a Chincoteague team that
went 18-2, has built a strong baseball
program that promises to get even better as only two seniors graduate from
this team with many of the top players
mere sophomores and freshmen.
Northampton Now
in State Final Four
The Northampton soccer team has
advanced to the state’s final four. They
will play for the regional champion-
ship at an undetermined date and
place at presstime, but have already
secured one of the four spots in the
state semi-finals to be played at Radford next week.
Northampton coach John Gorman
deserves considerable credit for not
only the success his soccer program
has achieved, but also the time he puts
in as coach of this team and the girls’
field hockey team in the fall.
Gorman is a self-employed contractor who is not getting paid when he
takes time off for practice, travel and
games. He also helps maintain one of
the best looking fields on the Shore
with additional hours of work beyond
his coaching duties.
This Northampton team features
nine seniors who have blended with
younger players to give the Jackets
considerable depth.
“They really don’t care who starts,”
said Gorman recently. “They all get
about the same playing time anyway.”
In the postseason, Northampton has
scored 24 goals while allowing only one.
Check back here next week for playoff results and complete lists of all-district and conference teams with photos.
Northampton coach John Gorman
congratulates Angel Sanchez.

Pungoteague Ruritan Poker Run July 25
The Pungoteague Ruritan Club will
sponsor a small boat “poker run” on
Saturday, July 25.
Any boat owner may register to participate in this ninth annual Bayside
Poker Run on the Chesapeake Bay and
adjoining creeks in the club’s community service area.
It is not a race, but simply boaters
choosing their own course and pace to
locate and visit five pre-chosen locations designated on a nautical chart
with notes and guidelines.
Registration for the event is $80 and
captains may include as many crew
members aboard as Coast Guard regulations allow. Registration forms must
be received by July 18 for this “early
bird” special and registration will be
limited to the first 30 boats. Registration forms are available from any Pungoteague Ruritan member or by calling
Paul Custis at 789-1766. Registration
forms also are available at Sandpiper Marine, Western Auto in Exmore,
Shore Marine, Davis Wharf Marine,
Don’s Tackle Shop, K&E Marine, Deep
Creek Marina, Island House Restaurant, Seaworthy Marine, H.W. Drummond, Mallard’s at the Wharf, and
Eastern Shore Outfitters.
Competition in the event will be
in two parts. The “navigational skill”
part will be for boaters to plot a course
which will enable them to “log in” at
five specific locations within designated time allowances. These locations will be spread among Onancock,
Pungoteague, Nandua, and Occohannock creeks and will be disclosed to all
captains simultaneously at a captains’
meeting on the morning of the event.
Points also will be earned in challenges
in various activities.
The “luck” part of the event will involve boaters picking up a playing card
at each of the five locations and bringing a poker hand to a final destination
at 5 p.m. The navigation prize will be
$350 or more and the poker prize will
be a Fall Vacation Getaway package.
Additional “dock prize” drawings will
be held for fishing gear, boating accessories, and other marine items. There
also will be a drawing for a Blue Crab
IV bronze sculpture by Turner Sculpture and an original painting by Willie
Crockett. See club members for tickets.
Complementary hot dogs and hamburgers will be served during the
awards ceremony at a bayside setting.
Proceeds from this event will benefit
the club’s scholarship program and its
handicapped access ramp project fund.

Chincoteague Tops Middlesex, Meets Lancaster Today
Story and photos by Bill Sterling
Rain forced postponement for two
days of this week’s scheduled regional
semi-final game pairing Chincoteague
and Lancaster to today at 4 p.m. at the
Ponies’ field.
A win over Lancaster would set up a
regional championship game at home
with the date undetermined. It also would
assure the Ponies of an appearance in the
state semi-finals as the four teams who
reach the East and West regional finals
advance to the state playoffs scheduled in
Radford next week.
Lancaster is a formidable foe, having easily beaten Middlesex by wide
margins this season. They advanced to
today’s game with a 9-0 win over Surry,
the team Chincoteague squeezed by with
a 2-1 comeback win last Wednesday.
Ponies Battle Back
To Beat Middlesex
The Ponies overcame a rough start
in Monday’s win over Middlesex, trailing 4-0 after one inning.
But sophomore Collin Derrickson
battled back and pitched six scoreless innings and the Chincoteague
offense struck quickly to take an 8-4
lead after the third inning. That was
also the final as neither team dented
the scoring column in the final four
innings.
The Pony crowd had barely settled
in before Middlesex rapped the ball
all over the field to put up four runs
in the top of the first, but Chincoteague struck right back with two runs,
two more in the second and four in the
third.
Ryan Mason was 3 for 4 with three
RBIs, Trey Fisher was 2 for 4 with
three RBIs, and Derrickson helped
his cause with an RBI double and two
walks.
Joe Thornton had a double and
Dylan Mason reached base three times
on walks. Mason Marshall and Joe
Mills each walked twice.
Derrickson allowed seven hits and
three walks and struck out six.
“Collin settled in and threw a good
game for us,” said Pony coach Will
Thompson.
Chincoteague players congratulate each other after an 8-4 win over Middlesex Monday to advance to the regional semi-final, scheduled for today
against Lancaster after being postponed by rain twice this week.
If you would like your ad to run in the
Post’s Sports Section, call 789-7678
Collin Derrickson slides into third after an RBI double and an error
that allowed him to take an extra base. Derrickson was also the winning pitcher, bouncing back after giving up four runs in the first inning
to hold Middlesex scoreless the remainder of the game.

Nandua, Northampton Fall in Postseason Softball Play
By Bill Sterling
Nandua was eliminated from the regional softball playoffs with a 6-3 loss
to unbeaten (22-0) Goochland that took
two trips past Richmond to complete.
The Lady Warriors scored two runs
in the top of the first inning Monday,
but gave up four unearned runs in the
bottom of the first and trailed 4-2 before play was stopped in the second inning because of heavy rains.
On Tuesday when the Warriors returned, Kimberly Wert homered in the
fifth to draw Nandua within one run,
but Goochland struck for a pair of runs
in the bottom of the sixth inning before
closing out the Warriors with a perfect
inning in the seventh.
Wert had an RBI single in the first
inning, and Derrica Toppin had a sacrifice fly to drive in Wert to give the Warriors a 2-0 lead.
However, three walks, an error and
two singles led to
four Goochland
runs in the bottom of the first
to wipe out the
short-lived Nandua lead.
Toppin settled
down after that
first inning on
the mound, with

eight hits in the game, holding Goochland scoreless until the sixth inning
when the Bulldogs tacked on two more
runs.
Nandua had five hits for the game,
two by Wert and one each by Toppin,
Chandler Davis and Paige Dimartino.
Kailyn Spencer was 3 for 4 and had
two RBIs for Goochland.
Nandua finished 15-3 on the season.
Nandua coach Lynn Williams looked
back on the game and the season. “Certainly, all of the travel did not do us any
favors,” he said. “We got close in the
fifth inning when Wert hit a monster
home run, but we did not have anyone
on base in front of her, which was our
formula for victory all year. We had a
crazy season this year; we did not play
our usual full schedule due to the awful weather early in the season. We also
had some key injuries that hurt. I am
very proud of this team though; they
fought hard to the last out and never
quit. I will miss my three seniors. They
have been a big part of this program
for a long time.”
esis, Kayla Huffman, shut down the
Warriors, allowing two hits and striking out 11. Huffman, who has signed to
pitch for Division 1 Radford next season, has tossed several no-hitters this
season and has led the Kavaliers to a
19-0 record.
Nandua’s Derrica Toppin gave a
strong performance on the mound,
allowing three hits and two runs in
51/3 innings. Kimberly Wert finished
in relief.
Toppin and Caroline Harvie each
had a single for the only Warrior hits.
Huffman also had a hit and scored
a run. Brittany Branch and Shannon
Holt drove in runs for King William.

“I urge everyone to take advantage
of free fishing days,’’ said John M.R.
Bull, head of the Virginia Marine Resources Commission, the agency which
manages saltwater fishing.
No fishing license of any kind — in

be required for recreational rod and
reel fishing.
However, keep in mind that all fishing regulations, including size, season,
catch limits and gear restrictions, will
remain in effect.
A Virginia annual saltwater fishing
license costs $17.50 for state residents.
The money supports valuable fisheries

Northampton Boys Reach Regional Soccer Finals, In State Final 4
Northampton blanked Surry 6-0
Wednesday night at home in the regional semi-finals, securing a berth in
the regional finals and assuring the
Jackets a place in the state final four to
be played June 12 and 13 in Radford.
Omar Montalvo, José Palicio and
Bayron Ortiz scored first-half goals,
and Surry defenders knocked two more
in as the Jackets held a commanding
5-0 halftime lead. Junior Guildo added
a goal in the second half.
Jackets Top Mathews
Bayron Otiz scored a pair of goals
and Jesus Maldonado added one as the
Northampton boys’ soccer team advanced in regional play with a 3-1 win
over Mathews Monday at home.
Sammy Pineda contributed two assists on the night as the Jackets followed a conference championship with
an opening round win in regional play.
Jackets Win Conference
Jesus Maldonado scored two goals
and Bayron Ortiz and Sammy Pineda
scored one each as Northampton won
the Conference 41 soccer title with
a 4-0 win over Surry Friday night at
home.
The Jacket offense kept the pressure on Surry from the opening moments with the Surry goalkeeper making numerous outstanding saves, but
Maldonado broke clear on a pass and
scored the opening goal with 7:01 left
in the first half. Less than a minute
later, Ortiz added a second goal to give
the Jackets a 2-0 halftime lead.
The Northampton boys’ soccer team won the Conference 41 championship with a 4-0 win over Surry last Friday. Pictured (from left) are: front row - Chris Montalvo, Billy Martinez, Miquel Ramos, José Palacio, James

row - Sammy Pineda, Vincent Cusimano, Mariano Gaytan, Junior Gildo, David Henderson, Angel MateoSanchez, Jesus Maldonado, Brian Terron, Malik McCaskill, Bayron Ortiz, and Coach John Gorman.
Pineda scored at the 35:40 mark of
the second half, and Maldonado tallied
his second goal of the game with 8:21
left. José Ibarra recorded the shutout
in the Northampton goal.
“We scored 15 goals and allowed
none in two conference games to win
the championship,” said Northampton
coach John Gorman. “We can bring
players off the bench who play as well
as the starters. That helps when you
get in the postseason.”

Jacket Girls Fall
4-3 in Marathon
It was a story of two halves and two
days for the Northampton girls’ soccer
team.
On Monday, the Lady Jackets traveled to Goochland for a regional quarterfinal game and played to a 2-2 tie
at halftime before the skies opened up
and halted the game.
Northampton had to return on
Tuesday to play a second half in a cold
misty rain and took a 3-2 lead on a
Taylor Webb corner kick, a rare feat,
but Goochland rallied for two goals
and a 4-3 win, ending the Jacket season at 13-3-2, including two postseason losses.
The Monday goals came from Erica
Head on a cross by Taylor Webb, and
then Kennedy Webb scored off a pass
from her twin sister to tie it up with 10
minutes left before half.
Rachel McCann scored two for
Goochland.
“The girls fought until the very
end of the game, getting great scoring
chances and nearly tying up the game,”
said Jacket coach Tabi Webb. “I was
very proud of how they played. It was
a very unusual situation. I couldn’t be
more pleased with the season we’ve
had and how the girls have performed
the entire season.”
Jackets Topped by MW
The Northampton girls’ soccer team
finished runner-up in Conference 33 to
Maggie Walker Governor’s School following a 4-0 loss at home Friday.
Playing a 2A school because of the
lack of 1A schools fielding soccer teams,
the Lady Jackets found themselves
overmatched by a school that draws
from most of metropolitan Richmond
and sent seven players from last year’s
team to Division 1 soccer programs.

Some Assembly Required
By David McCaleb
https://davidmccaleb.wordpress.com/
I’m so old, I can remember when
furniture came already made. Once, I
bought an entire coffee table and all I
had to do was place it in front of a sofa. I didn’t suffer through a dictionarysized instruction booklet, pondering
the meaning of illustrations of stick
figures and arrows. No counting hardware to ensure all pieces were included. No hunting for the manual’s English section. Just put it on the floor and
get a cup of coffee. That’s how old I am.
We consumers have done it to ourselves. Always tending toward less expensive products, manufacturers have
no choice but to compete. They cut costs
’til things must be outsourced to China
or Vietnam. To keep shipping costs low,
factories pack a dresser in cardboard
and foam so tightly it arrives at your
door in a box the size of a wallet. That’s
when buyer’s remorse sets in like your
vote after Election Day.
Today, furniture isn’t the only item
that arrives stripped down, but toys,
appliances, and even tools. Recently I
purchased a new table saw. “Some Assembly Required” had been scrolled
across the sides of a glossy cardboard
box picturing the gizmo fully functional, complete with sawdust. The crate
was large enough that I hoped assembly would be painless.
No such luck.
Five hundred and thirty-one individual pieces — I didn’t know a table
saw could be so complex. I laid its guts
on the cold cement floor of my garage
to take inventory. It looked like a forensics team reconstructing an aircraft accident. Legs and braces and table wings
sprawled nakedly, along with some idiotic contraption that’s supposed to keep
you from cutting yourself. I later found
the way it worked was to prove itself so
unwieldy you just didn’t use the saw.
Next to the spread, I unfolded instructions like a 12-foot world map.
They don’t make printers this big in
America. After a lengthy hunt, I spotted
the English section somewhere around
the Atlantic Ocean. I had passed it several times because the grammar was
what you would expect from a pupil educated through Common Core.
Look, when I finally got to college,
I’d taken three years of Spanish and
two root-canal-painful years of Latin.
My alma mater required yet another
foreign language, so I chose Manda-

Sewage Dilemma Must
Consider Welfare of Businesses
Dear Editor:
I am writing on behalf of the Board of Directors
of the Eastern Shore Chamber of Commerce, which
has served businesses on the Eastern Shore for 62
years. Representing more than 450 businesses, our
mission is to serve, promote, and connect businesses and communities of the Eastern Shore of Virginia. In light of this mission, we need to note our deep
concern over an issue that seems very likely to have
long-term adverse economic impacts for all citizens
in Accomack County.
We feel the mid-Accomack area, consisting of
Onancock/Onley/Parksley, is one of the primary economic hubs for the county. Maintaining and growing
businesses in this area can generate significant future benefits to all communities, taxpayers and the
county government.
Over the past 12 years, significant expenses and
rin Chinese for variation. Other than
jumping from a perfectly good aircraft
at 15,000 feet, that was the stupidest
thing I’ve ever done. For what reason
would I think that I, who can barely
color inside the lines of English, could
learn a tonal language? And not just
that, but one written in hieroglyphics.
One of my fondest memories of that
debacle was an oral exam in my first semester. The teacher would ask a question in Chinese and you would respond,
preferably in the same language. Only
a minute into the exam my instructor’s
face was red as China’s flag and tears
glistened in the corner of an eye. One
more question, then his muffled snicker
turned into a healthy cackle.
“What’s so funny?”
“Your answers.”
“Am I doing that bad?”
“No. Well … yes. They’re a mixture
of Spanish and Chinese.”
Apparently I had only one parking
spot in my brain labeled foreign language, and Spanish hadn’t wanted to
be evicted.
Now, studying the English section of
this world map instruction set, I gaped
at the journey ahead. The hardware
package was stuffed as full as a child’s
multiple efforts have been undertaken between
the county and the Town of Onancock to develop
the necessary sewer capacity required to increase
the density and diversity of businesses in midAccomack while concurrently increasing county
revenues.
While it may be easier for the county and town
government officials to pursue separate sewage solutions, this may not be the optimum solution for all county taxpayers. We would suggest
that leadership from both Accomack County and
the Town of Onancock be required to refocus on
the future, collaborate with each other and take
whatever steps necessary to resolve this sewage
system stand-off.
We thank the Board of Supervisors and the Town
Council for their service. We have been and will continue to monitor subsequent discussions on this issue and will provide comment as necessary to address barriers to economic expansion in our community. If we can be of assistance don’t hesitate to call
upon us.

Tools Needed: blast furnace, torque
wrench, PhD in mechanical engineering.
Well, the generous manufacturer had
provided a multi-tool that resembled the
spawn of a wrench mating with a screwdriver. But its offerings were useless, so a
good ole Craftsman socket set had to finish what the manufacturer had started.
But truthfully, Made In China has
gotten a bad rap. Nothing is made there
anymore. How can a Barbie Doll Dream
House that comes with more pieces
than an F22 Raptor and an instruction
booklet that dwarfs the Affordable Care
Act be considered poor quality just because we can’t figure out how to put it
together? We procrastinate its making
till midnight Christmas Eve after four
glasses of eggnog. It may be blow-molded in a foreign country, but every one
of those gaudy masses of plastic joy are
made in the USA.
So, next time you bloody your knuckles after a wrench slips and you slam
fingers into the sprocket of your son’s
new bike, take it with a smile – it’s
Made in America.
Any way you look at it, my fellow patriots, we’ve done it to ourselves.
