P e r h a p s I need a holiday. But seriously I c o u l d not understand w h e r e the plot was g o i n g . In retrospect this one act play is m o r e of a vignette than a n y t h i n g e l s e . It is a slice of life, if one may be so p a t r o n i z i n g . But first consider the c i r c u m s t a n c e of the play itself. Two old gents ~ one E n g l i s h a n d one C a n a d i a n s p e n d the better part of an hour d i s c u s s i n g the good old days a n d their plans to make it to B o l i v i a for s o m e obscure c o u p . fvlitton h y p e s t h e tension Y o u are p r o b a b l y w o n d e r i n g now, what about the b a r b e q u e sauce? I met two m e m b e r s of L e y d e n Z a r at a recent A.&M s h i n d i g , a n d these lads have a few ideas that aren't c o m p l e t e l y r e m o v e d from reality. It's too bad the C F O X interview d i d n ' t show them lust- ice. Back to the a l b u m , three s t a r s C " ) , It's not a bad selection of rvlontreal's latest. K y r a H a p p e r appeared in this production as Amparo - the w o m e n r u n n i n g the bar w h i c h is the setting for this play. A g a i n her strong presence is a plus for her performance. Unfortunately D i r e c t o r Jace van der V e e n has given her too m u c h b u s i n e s s to do to the point that the focus on the old gents in the bar is lost. T o m f ^ c B e a t h as the English gent - T h e S q u i r e , gives it his best shot as an actor and is quite e n t e r t a i n i n g . H e had the character d o w n quite well c o m p l e t e w i t h the knickers and accent. D a v i d Petersen appears as the C a n a d i a n C o l o n e l . H i s shaking tended t o overshadow the characterization at times and m a d e m e wonder if he wasn't c h o k i n g on his c i g a r . But other than this he developed enough to show potential i n this character role. L A S E G U N D A continues until S a t u r d a y at t h e Waterfront Theatre. T h e title cut ' B a d R e p u t a t i o n ' is by far the best n u m b e r on the A l b u m . H e r vocals c o m e across powerfully a n d s h a r p w i t h the f i n e s s e of a C U P E picket l i n e . Jett has s k y r o c k e t e d in the m u s i c industry a n d B a d Reputations is a c l a s s i c e x a m p l e of her hard-driving ambition. Buy Buy Vancouver, a revue style theatre - tries to do just that w i t h t h e V a n c o u v e r h o u s i n g c r i s i s . It's an a d m i r a b l e undert a k i n g , but p r e d i c t a b l y , it f a i l s . M o r e aptly, the o l d a d a g e f a i l s : the h o u s i n g c r i s i s is one c l o u d that d o e s n ' t have a silver lining. Rather poor performances c a m e from the i m i t a t i o n Riff Raff w h i c h was n o w h e r e near the real t h i n g . S o r r y Riff, y o u ' r e g o i n g to n e e d more Raff. A n d h e a v e n f o r b i d , F r a n k l e was p l a y e d by a w o m a n . S h e w a s n ' t too t e r r i b l e except s h e lacked those Important m a l e characteristics so m u c h a part of F r a n k e n f u r t e r . A s far as looks g o , the most H a v i n g not s e e n the p i c t u r e s h o w s i n c e D e c e m b e r , I noticed a lot of c h a n g e s . T h e R i d g e had e m p l o y e e s d r e s s as s o m e of the m a i n characters In the f i l m . A s e a c h one went t h r o u g h their m a i n s c e n e o n the s c r e e n , the s a m e s c e n e was enacted i n f r o n i of y o u . Out of all the of H e l e n H o d g m a n ' s play deals w i t h the r e l a t i o n s h i p between a mother a n d her daughter as they g r o w up. Hodgman treats this idea in a very stylized m a n n e r as she e x a m i n e s the surface of emotion and symbolism. O H M O T H E R IS IT W O R T H IT? is a very unusual and s o m e t i m e s funny play. U n f o r tunately the s u b c o n s c i o u s e x ploration of the frustrations a n d anger of the mother and d a u g h t e r d i d not a l w a y s m a k e the a u d i e n c e feel comfortable or make us c o m e away from the theatre with a greater u n d e r s t a n d i n g of the human psyche. H o w e v e r one may feel about this play, it's central theme is one that has potential. So if you want to b e c r a z y o n a Saturday n i g h t , take in T h e Rocky H o r r o r P i c t u r e S h o e . E v e r y o n e else d o e s . Made in C a n a d a solution: g o v e r n m e n t has got to c o m e to our a i d a n d p r o v i d e the right cheap a n d affordable h o u s i n g . W i l l we all end up like the h a n d f u l of CURE picketers who c a m e out to e m b a r r a s s the M a y o r , a n d bitch because there isn't e n o u g h in Ihe kitty? It d o e s n ' t matter that B u y B u y V a n c o u v e r isn't slick, that there is little c h o r e o g r a p h y a n d the accom pan lament Is slightly out of tune. Part of its c h a r m lies in its s i m p l i c i t y . W e all have too m a n y faces to put on the victim a n d the v i l l i a n s . T h e r e is no need to tax the i m a g i n a t i o n , that's already being done on a daily basis by reality. G i v e n the subject, the response of the a u d i e n c e was p r e d i c t a b l e . Vote C O P E , Right O n ! There is nervous laughter as tension is released in a theatre j a m packed w i t h feelings stretched to the b r e a k i n g point. B u t there is no c a t h a r s i s . W e are told we s h o u l d take g r o u p action a n d put on the p r e s s u r e . P r e s s u r e who? In spite of l a u g h s , it is all tragedy. B u t , do see B u y B u y V a n c o u v e r if you get the c h a n c e . E s p e c i a l l y if you still have no s e n s e of being a v i c t i m in lotus land. T h i s is one revue that won't make you feel any better. T h e p a c k e d theatre was s u r r o u n d e d by g r o u p s g i v i n g out pamphlets. W e were told: s q u a t t i n g , the next p h a s e in the h o u s i n g c r i s i s as we w a l k e d to the front door. O u t s t r e t c h e d hands offered manifestos from g r o u p s like the W e l f a r e R i g h t s Coalition, and more slogans: h o u s i n g is a r i g h t , not a commodity. It would have taken a w h e e l b a r r o w to carry home all the p a m p h l e t s and a patient g r a d u a t e of an E v e l y n W o o d c o u r s e , w i t h lots of time, to read them a l l . T h e r e i n lies the p r o b l e m : It's too b i g . T h e c r i s i s defies s o l u t i o n , a n d the revue, despite some memorable m o m e n t s a d d lots of good intentions, does little more than vent s p l e e n . W e leave the theatre with a long list of v i c t i m s , a n d the emotional transitions for her character. M a r y M o n k s as the mother sang her way through the p r o d u c t i o n . c o n v i n c i n g w a s the part of M a g e n t a . T h e frizzy h a i r d o a n d c o s t u m e r e s e m b l i n g that of a m a i d were exact -- I w o n ' t say m u c h m o r e s i n c e the a c t i n g d i d n ' t m a t c h the perfection f o u n d in the m a k e - u p a n d costume. humour' last m o n t h . This time around. Buy B u y V a n c o u v e r had s o m e a d d i t i o n s V i r t u a l l y e v e r y group in the city c o n c e r n e d w i t h h o u s i n g was invited to set up booths in the V a n c o u v e r East C u l t u r a l Centre. M a y o r M i k e Harcourt arrived T h u r s d a y night to proclaim April 14-18 H o u s i n g C r i s i s W e e k . A n d every perf o r m a n c e was followed by d e bates. P o l i t i c i a n s a n d private b u s i n e s s met c o n s u m e r advocates in an attempt to c o m e up with some solutions. The five-member troupe, Headlines Theatre, takes on landlords, politicians, speculators, real estate s a l e s m e n , a n d d e v e l o p e r s . T h e 45-minute play was written to be p e r f o r m e d in the c o m m u n i t y . It packed c h u r c h e s , s c h o o l s , a n d union halls throughout the lower mainland during February. A n d the production returned to V a n c o u v e r last week as part of H o u s i n g C r i s i s W e e k , after playing In O t t a w a at the National H o u s i n g C o n f e r e n c e Is it worth it? B y G r a h a m Stone O H M O T H E R IS IT W O R T H IT? T h e words kept e c h o i n g in my mind as I watched this play b e i n g p e r f o r m e d as part of the D u M a u r i e r F e s t i v a l of One Act P l a y s at the W a t e r f r o n t T h e a t r e . It's not one of the most m e m o r a b l e prod u c t i o n s I've s e e n , but it d i d have a few r e d e e m i n g q u a l i t i e s . R o c k y i m p e r s o n a t i o n s , the one w h i c h w a s perfect to a T w a s the g i r l who m i m i c k e d C o l u m b i a . F r o m t i p p i n g her hat to t a p p i n g her feet, s h e never m i s s e d a cue. your sense By B r u c e M a s o n the A t times the play a p p e a r e d to be a s t r i n g of literal cliches about mothers rearing their d a u g h t e r s . A s a matter of fact H o d g m a n has chosen to surrealistically explore the v a r i o u s stages from c h i l d rearing to puberty to eventually what d a u g h t e r s become as mothers themselves. i D u r i n g the play the mother a p p r o a c h e s her relationship with her daughter as though everything can be solved by a J u d y G a r l a n d s o n g . Later we see the s u b c o n s c i o u s frustration of the mother and daughter emerge. . A m u c h - n e e d e d restaurant to the BCIT c o m m u n i t y is n o w serve o p e n f 7 days a week 7 AM -9PM\ C o m e W h i l e this was going on I d i d not find the work as a w h o l e to be e n t h r a l l i n g . A l t h o u g h there were some funny moments particularly when the mother crucifies her daughter to the door for her o w n g o o d . A n d I must admit the women in the a u d i e n c e laughed quite a bit at what went on with these two actresses on stage. No doubt they were r e m i n d e d of some earlier experiences. K y r a H a r p e r as the daughter proved herself to be a good actress in this performance. Where doyou go, what do you do. W e l l if y o u ' r e a normal person you go have a drink. So you pick up your books a n d head over to the S A C but n o . . . n o . . . i t s c l o s e d . Y e s once a g a i n B C I T ' s own little bar has been shut d o w n , this t i m e for s e l l i n g kegs of beer out the back door. What next? How many times do the thirsty masses at B C I T have to be d i s a p p o i n t e d when they go for a drink. When are the people r u n n i n g the student association a n d the p u b g o i n g to u n d e r s t a n d that their job is to provide a s e r v i c e to students not to make their lives frustrating T h e history of B C I T ' s pub is a sad one. A t the best of times its an ugly d e p r e s s i n g place to drink. A t the worst of times its a shooting g a l l e r y . students. W h e n the people living in the condominiums across the road c o m p l a i n about noise from the p u b , what does the S A do. T e l l them to get stuffed. E x p l a i n that B C I T was here long before their houses a n d that noise is a natural by-product of any k i n d of school. N o , they start s h u t t i n g the pub earlier a n d e a r l i e r . W h e n the a d m i n i s t r a t i o n is looking for a scapegoat for a couple of fights in the p u b does the S A say buzz off, this Is a student p r o b l e m in a student pub a n d none of your b u s i n e s s . No. T h e y ban the r u g b y t e a m . W h y the rugby t e a m . W h y not. A f t e r a l l , they needed to ban s o m e b o d y a n d the r u g b y team was handy. If they hadn't banned t h e m , they w o u l d have banned s o m e o n e else. M a y b e the entire s c h o o l , but of course that w o u l d h a v e b e e n a bit counter productive. A n y w a y , this is all history. W e will have a new student association executive next year and a n e a r - n e w pub m a n a g e r , let's hope s o m e t h i n g improves in the S A C . O t h e r w i s e students w o u l d be well a d v i s e d to buy shares in the V i l l a . A t the very worst of times its F r i d a y night with the rhythm masters. R e m a r k s about his obvious preference towards s o m e e x t r a m u r a l athletic t e a m s . Bitter r e m a r k s about his b u d g e t i n g in favour of those, p r e f e r r e d t e a m s . But hey, I t h o u g h t , no one can be that b a d . G i v e the m a n a break. W r o n g . S e e i n g is b e l i e v i n g . I attended the e x t r a m u r a l sports banquet A p r i l 3. I heard l^r. S. praise the b a s k e t b a l l teams for their participation in the C a n a d ian playoffs, lylr. S . d i d not d e v u l g e their record in this event. Mf. S . d i d not mention they C a n d i d a t e s p T h e job of A c t i v i t i e s C o - o r d i n ator provides a c h a i l a n g e for the c a n d i d a t e elected to the position. I believe I a m up to that c h a i l a n g e . For the past two a n d a half years I have been Involved w i t h t h e e n t e r t a i n m e n t s c e n e Ir V a n c o u v e r , h a v i n g played In several local b a n d s , a n d operated my own promotions company (which o r g a n i z e s d a n c e s , concerts a n d other events). A s i d e f r o m the usual duties of A c t i v i t i e s C o - o r d i n a t o r , there are a few t h i n g s I'd like to see at B C I T - F i r s t : I'd like to see better p a r k i n g facilities provided,Id also j T h i s issue of the Link was conceived by R i c h K o n w i c k , M a r k O ' R e i l l y , Lydia Neufeld and Brenda Gough. the participated in the C a n a d i a n because a n d only because B C I T hosted the event. R u m o u r s say that the n u m b e r of m e d a l s w o n by the basketball t e a m s are few. I heard Ivlr. S. praise the p e r f o r m a n c e of the R u g b y a n d V o l l e y b a l l t e a m s . R i g h t f u l l y so. T h e y did g o o d ! E v e n at the banquet they knew the precise Instants to hiss, boo, and throw food at the s p e a k e r . G o o d work athletes. Too bad you d i d n ' t succeed in k n o c k i n g the w i n d out of h i m ! Other teams were recognized, a l t h o u g h mostly in quick p a s s i n g . O n e of those was c u r l i n g . W h a t l^r. S . neglected to say was that e a l c s o u t like to see the s o u n d s y s t e m In T h e a t r e 129, w h e r e free m o v i e s are s h o w n , u p g r a d e d . A n o t h e r matter of interest Is the S A C P u b ; p e r h a p s the hours of operation c o u i l d be e x t e n d e d . T h e election Is this T h u r s d a y , a n d I w o u l d a p p r e c i a t e your vote. W h o e v e r you vote for m a k e s u r e you vote. T h e money being used by the Student A s s o c i a t i o n Is your m o n e y . I believe that I a m the best c a n d i d a t e to utilize that money.
