Vivante Voice - September 2016
September 2016 National Assisted Living Week was established by the National Center for Assisted Living in 1995. The organization invites assisted living communities to use the annual theme as inspiration for their celebrations each September. This annual, national observance provides an opportunity for residents, their loved ones, staff, volunteers and surrounding communities to celebrate the individuals served in assisted living and learn more about this sector of the long-term care profession. “Keep Connected” will be the theme for this year’s National Assisted Living Week, which runs from September 11th through the 17th. “‘Keep Connected’ recognizes the expanding opportunities technology offers to residents and staff alike in our nation’s assisted living communities,” said NCAL Executive Director Scott Tittle. “With this year’s theme, we hope to help overcome the mistaken belief that seniors are not interested in or are not able to learn about the latest modern advancements. At the same time, we want to recognize the many revolutionary ways staff are enhancing care through new innovative tools and broadening their connections with the larger community.” Vivante has been on the cutting edge of weaving technology into the daily lives of our residents from our inception. The popularity of the iPad and smart phone instruction classes offered at the community speaks to the technological tide change for today’s seniors. Our Systems and Technology Director, Mark Thompson, has set up over 100 iPads for our existing residents. He routinely answers calls to help navigate through the intimidating challenges of software updates, virus threats, and a host of other computer and TV maladies. Computers are supposed to make our lives easier, but any senior would likely tell you otherwise. Mark’s mission is to simply help make the experience easier and more enjoyable. I am excited to announce the impending implementation of “It’s Never 2 Late”, our most recent technological addition to the Vivante experience. The IN2L computer system contains a content library that supports core dimensions of wellness. Over 3,000 applications and content items provide new choices for social connection, intellectual stimulation, physical engagement, spiritual connections, emotional support and vocational interests, all in one system! This successful program will be centered in the Shores, with access for any of our residents who desire to learn and participate. This lovely lady is one of our treasured Ambassadors and was born in Jersey City, New Jersey and raised in Oradell. She is a graduate of St. Lawrence V. Canton in New York, graduated Phi Beta Kappa, and was a Spanish major. She was active in Municipal government in Pennsylvania and active in politics. Married in 1951, her husband was aboard a minesweeper in the Pacific Ocean during WWII. She and her husband had two daughters and a son. She enjoys swimming, walking, reading, and bridge and has been instrumental in putting bridge players together in the community. She has enjoyed traveling by motor home, watching football, playing Mexican Train, and playing bridge throughout her life. She was a volunteer for an after school program at the Salvation Army for many years. You may see her at the Episcopal church service each Sunday. She has contributed a great deal to Vivante as a community and is always very kind and respectful to those living and working here. Thank you for all of your contributions. Who can this be? Please RSVP with the Concierge desk or at the Activities office. 1640 Monrovia Ave, Costa Mesa, CA 92627 • 949.629.2100 • www.vivanteliving.com • Lic # 306004582 Our featured residents this month are Jack and Yvonne Whitehead. Yvonne is yet another California native who was born near the beautiful Angeles National Forest foothills in La Crescenta and grew up in Glendale. Jack, on the other hand was born in Corbin, Kentucky. Shortly after her graduation from Hoover High School, Yvonne was offered a job as a dental assistant. Fortunately for her, the doctor was not interested in trained dental assistants and instead insisted on training them himself. She learned to clean, polish and rinse patients’ teeth and do various tasks in the dental lab. She even learned how to make gold dental inlays from raw metal. She still has one of the gold inlays she made in her mouth! Jack played some football in high school, worked in a shoe repair shop shining shoes, and had joined the National Guard. At the time, the Korean War was growing and, on the advice of a friend who fought in WWII, Jack decided to join the Air Force instead of waiting for the National Guard to deploy him. He enlisted, went to basic training in San Antonio, and then was sent to Glendale for fifteen weeks of Jack & Yvonne Whitehead mechanical training. That was in 1951 and where he met Yvonne. After two weeks of dating, Jack was smitten enough to propose marriage just days before being sent to Chanute AF Base where he would continue his aircraft engine training. Yvonne’s mother was unimpressed with the proposal, telling her to wait and see if he would come back after his training was completed. After finishing his training, and after a four-month deployment in England, Jack was assigned to a B-50 Bomber Squadron at Castle Air Force Base near Merced, CA. The couple married (after Jack promised Yvonne he would not reenlist) and lived in Merced while working through his remaining years of service. After being discharged, the couple moved back to Glendale where Jack found work at Lockheed. He also went back to school to gain an Airframe and Powerplant (A&P) license that would allow him to certify that a plane was okay to fly. After only a year at Lockheed, Jack applied for a different job at Nordskog, Inc. and hired on in their sheet metal fabrication unit. Nordskog built airplane galleys, including ovens, coffee makers, carts, tray carriers and more. Jack did well at the company and was promoted to the supervisor of the coffee making unit. His first installation was in President Eisenhower’s plane. During his time there, the price of gasoline had spiked, forcing the airline industry to find ways to make their craft more fuel efficient. Jack was charged with doing the research to figure out how to build lighter galleys. After a long study of material choices and getting approval to use it from the FAA, Jack built the company’s new prototype galley. He asked the female receptionist to carry his creation into the meeting where it would be introduced. Needless to say, everyone was impressed. That prototype was given to Frontier Airlines who used it on a plane for one year. After the trial, they removed the galley for analysis and, when it proved to still look new, it went on to become their strongest product. Jack spent quite a bit of time working with Boeing in Seattle and Seal Beach. Nordskog eventually built every galley ever installed in a Boeing 737 but for one. With that success, Jack was promoted to the VP of Manufacturing and ultimately enjoyed a thirty-six-year career there. Before retiring, Jack accepted a challenge to take on another galley design project at Driessen Aircraft Interiors, proudly noting that he pulled the team together, got them caught up on their production schedule, and launched a successful design three days ahead of schedule. Jack and Yvonne have two children and enjoyed enough success that Yvonne was able to stay home and raise their two kids. Their son lives in Santa Clarita and their daughter in Huntington Beach. That was the catalyst for their move from their home of 41 years in La Crescenta to Vivante. While Yvonne misses her beloved home and is slowly adjusting, they are happy at Vivante and Jack loves spending time in the gym each morning and getting to know new people at the dinner table. We’re glad to have you along for the ride at Vivante! Thank you for being a wonderful part of our community! Flu season is on its way! Flu shots will be available at Vivante soon. Reminder to place tissues in the trash while dining, walking around, watching a movie etc. Thank you. We hope everyone stays healthy this year and we thank you for your assistance. Jody Simon is back at Strands Salon for your natural nail care. Manicures and pedicures are available for both men and women. Come by to see the new fall colors. Arbonne cosmetics and the skin care line are for sale in the salon (pick up a catalog). It is a wonderful, organic product line. Call for your next appointment at: (949) 903-6392. You are invited to ask questions, make suggestions, speak freely with Council Members and our Ombudsman. Staff is invited to join at the Council’s request and may share updates within the Community, answer questions and more. The meeting is located in the CRO’s Nest on the third floor. You are encouraged to attend the next meeting on Wednesday, September 14th at 2:00 p.m. Our current council members are: Don Borthwick, Georgiana McLeod, Bob Woodward, Peggy Gordon, Catherine Broker, Gay Purcilly and Conrad Timpe. If you are interested in being a part of the Council, please see Activities or call at 949-999-4713. Don’t miss J.R.’s Balance Class–offered each Tuesday in the Motion Fitness gym. As we have a happy hour of sorts most days that begins at 3:30 p.m., we are adjusting the start time of J.R.’s class so that you may attend both if you wish. J.R. will begin his classes in September at 2:30 p.m. instead of the original 3:00 p.m. We hope you will join us. The class focuses on balance, reaction time and more. We are seeking the return of some large print books and new donations. Our Fireside Library on the second floor features many beautiful books that are loaned on an honor system. If you would like us to pick up the books that may have gathered in your apartment, please contact Activities and we would be happy to pick them up. The large print selections are the most sought after books we have. Do we have anyone in the community that speaks Dutch? We have a resident who is living in The Shores who would love to converse with another who speaks her language. If you can help please contact the Activities department. Many thanks to our food service team for the fabulous Summer barbecues. We will be offering a Labor Day Barbecue on Monday, September 5th from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on our Putting Green. Continued on page 4 - - > Bertha Soriano, Cook Bertha was born in Zacatecas, Mexico and moved to the U.S. at age nineteen. She grew up on a farm with cows, pigs, chickens, and a horse. She has two sisters and three brothers living. One of her brothers passed away at age twenty-seven. She is the youngest girl in the family. Her parents currently live in Mexico with her younger brother while the remainder of her family lives in Santa Barbara. She attended Cerritos College and worked at Huntington Terrace, a Senior Living Community that was once managed by Jennifer, our Executive Director. Bertha began as a server and worked alongside Maria, our Kitchen/Food Service Director. While working there, she met her future husband and married in 1997. The couple recently celebrated her twentieth anniversary. Together they have nineteen year old son who attends U.C.Irvine and is studying Political Science, a daughter, age eleven, who would like to be a teacher one day, and son, age nine, who Bertha says is “pretty easy going.” After having her children, Bertha chose to remain home for seven years to give them a solid foundation and a good start. In her spare time she enjoys time with her family, going to the park, shopping, travel, dancing, pop music, cooking and baking. They have a dog and four chickens, all of whom she says get along very well. Bertha has a wonderful home garden where she grows her own herbs and vegetables. Asked what she likes about her job, she laughed and said she enjoys the quiet of the morning in the back kitchen while prepping food for the day. Bertha does a wonderful job of preparing all of the beautiful salads that we enjoy every day and is very happy to be part of the team at Vivante. She is a great baker and is always very kind and calm with her co-workers and residents. Thank you Bertha. We appreciate all your contributions to Vivante. RESIDENTS Best wishes from Vivante!
