Vivante Voice November 2015
November 2015 The month of November will start off with the addition of an extra hour of sleep when daylight savings time ends the morning of November 1st. Don’t forget to set your clocks back! Hopefully the extra rest will leave everyone ready to participate in the “Walk to End Alzheimer’s” fundraiser in Huntington Beach, the morning of Saturday November 7th. Come join us as we proudly wear our aqua t-shirts and take “One Step Towards a Great Memory” for a cause near to us all. A year ago on this month, we dedicated our Veterans Wall. If you or a loved one would like to honor a veteran and add to our fabulous and poignant display, we would be delighted to assist you. I never tire of looking at all the wonderful pictures and memorabilia displayed. On Veterans Day, Wednesday, November 11th, we will again celebrate and honor our veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good. This month we will begin another tradition with the “Vivante Reminiscence Hallway”, outside of the Artist’s Palette. The activities team and I have been hard at work collecting childhood and young adult photographs from our team members and residents for the display. Come take a stroll down memory lane and give your best guesses on who is in the photographs. There will be a fun contest with prizes for those who correctly identify the most people. The Host Station, extension #4712, is taking reservations for our Thanksgiving Buffet Brunch on Thursday November 26th from 11:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. Chef Alex and his team are sure to delight with their delicious and creative cuisine. Traditional fare along with some Vivante specialties will be on the menu. We welcome families and friends to join us on this day when we pause to give thanks for all that we are thankful for. Please invite your family and friends to your home to celebrate with you. For those residents that will not be leaving the community for the evening meal on Thanksgiving Day there will be an opportunity to have a boxed meal delivered to your suite, or you may enjoy the pre-made dinner family style in the Mélange Dining Room with fellow residents. As I sit down to dinner on my favorite holiday, at the top of my list of things to give thanks for will be our community and all the love and friendship I witness every day. This lovely woman grew up in Laguna Beach and lived in Northern California and Idaho Falls. She attended San Diego State and studied interior design, sociology and career counseling. She met her husband while each had their sons in day care as single parents. Her husband was a Nuclear Engineer and they lived in Japan, North Korea, and Brazil while her husband built reactors in those countries. While living abroad, she studied the language, culture and foods of each country. They often flew by helicopter to Baatan sites in Thailand and other compounds throughout Asia. In Rio de Janeiro they enjoyed Carnival, the beaches, glamorous people and parties and in-country travel. Her interests include language, culture, art studies, music and song writing for children. She has played piano since the age of four and does not read music, playing by ear. That didn’t stop her from writing an Operatta and some anthems. She has a baby grand piano and a beautiful collection of Asian art in her apartment. At Vivante, she senses a need to reach out, listen to, and bond with other residents, hoping to start a “Circle of Friends” group. Who can this be? Marlene & Arnold Steele Conrad Timpe Paul Furgatch Herbert Kawahara Stan Mutusiewicz* Diane & Bill Widawsky* Stephen Friedman* Pam Higgins* * Shores residents This month’s newcomer lunch will be held on November 10th at 11:30 in the Oak Room. Please RSVP with the Concierge desk. (949) 629 - 2100 or the Activities office. 1640 Monrovia Ave, Costa Mesa, CA 92627 • 949.629.2100 • www.vivanteliving.com • Lic # 306004582 Our featured residents this month are John and Roberta Weiss. Both were born in Philadelphia – Roberta in 1940, and John in a “row home” in 1929, on the Tuesday before the stock market crash. He shares that the most popular song at the time was “Why was I Born?”. John shares that he and a friend had two small toy cars they played with when growing up. There was no grass on the lawn. He frequently had to replace the cardboard he used to pad the worn soles of his shoes during the Depression years. John was raised by his mother. Roberta attended the first Catholic girls high school and John attended a Roman Catholic high school. Each married young at 19 and 18, but not to each other. John had two boys and attended art classes in the evenings. Once graduated from high school he began work right way in a factory that built large search lights. As a result of his art background and submission of three dimensional drawings to his boss, he was promoted to manager and worked in the factory for the next fifteen years. Following his factory work, John became a salesperson and sold everything that was related to photo processing and later, supplies for the newspaper business. Roberta was married to an air traffic controller and had a good career working for a lawyer for eight Jack & Roberta Weiss years, a judge for ten years, and as an Executive Secretary to The Court Administrator for another ten years. She had two daughters, two years apart. She divorced and raised her daughters in their early years with the assistance of her mother and remained single for seventeen years. John divorced his first wife after fourteen years and maintained a great relationship with his sons, looking forward to their time together. He re-married, but divorced two years later. He remained single from age 40 to 50 and traveled all over the country for work. John and Roberta met at a restaurant near Grace Kelly’s home on the Philadelphia River. Roberta was dining there with her then steady boyfriend. She just happened to be in the process of breaking up with him! It was that evening where she met her future husband, John. They married after three dates. Roberta shares that she liked that John had a sense of humor and good morals. They have been together ever since. You may be wondering, why does the picture above say Jack and not John? Because when John was delivered in a poor row-house with the help of a midwife during the Depression, no birth cerificate was produced. He and Roberta wanted to travel and John needed a passport. With her access as a clerk of the court, Roberta did a search and found a birth certificate for a ‘Jack Weiss’ born in Philadelphia the same year. He now carries a drivers license and passport with the name Jack! His bank accounts list Jack as an AKA. Jack and Roberta both paint. He paints with oils, while Robert paints with water colors. (You might remember that he recently auctioned some of his paintings at Vivante to raise money for this month’s Alzheimer’s Memory walk? He raised nearly $4,000!) Jack played all sorts of sports, liked to build various items, and also had a hobby as a photographer. Roberta studied religion and converted from Catholic to Jewish faith. They lived twenty-eight miles from Atlantic City and enjoyed going to the casinos on Sundays to play craps. They remember a stretch of eighteen Sundays where they played until they earned enough money to buy lunch at the casino’s huge buffet before going home. Another favorite of theirs was horse racing. Roberta’s family lives in Orange County and encouraged them to make the move to Irvine Terrace in 2002. Roberta’s son-in-law showed them Vivante and, after reading an article in the Daily Pilot that declared Vivante as “the best in the county,” they made the move here. Jack feels that each would “give the shirts off their backs” to someone and this is what they love about one another. They enjoy time with their combined six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. We are happy to have you as part of the Vivante family. In Memorium - On October 1st, I lost my wife, Marie, at Hoag Hospital. She had been having problems with her esophagus and the movement of food from her throat to her stomach. Four doctors tried to clear the blockage, but their efforts were in vain. She also had major problems with neuropathy in both legs... We had a loving, peacful life together for sixty-two years and created two children, Mindy and Gary, both of whom we dearly love. We will miss Marie’s charming personality and pleasant presence. Our love for one another will never have an ending. Thank you for your support! - Edwin Glassberg & Family Massage Therapist Victoria Wilson Avilable on Thursdays by Appointment (949) 584-0185 As a former caregiver to my husband who was an ALS patient, I understand the complexities and special needs of my clients. Call today to schedule an appointment in the therapy room or your apartment. Vivante’s residents hold a meeting once a month to discuss community issues in the absence of staff. You are invited to ask questions, make suggestions, speak freely with Council Members and our Ombudsman. Staff is invited to join at the Council’s request and may share updates within the Community, answer questions and more. The meeting is located in the CRO’s Nest. You are encouraged to attend the next meeting on Wednesday, November 11th at 2:00 p.m. Our current council members are: Don Borthwick, Georgiana McLeod, Bob Woodward, Catherine Broker, Peggy Gordon, and Gay Purcilly. If you have are interested in being a part of the Council, please see Activities or call at 949 - 629 - 2100, extension #4713. We would like to thank Berna for her time offering waxing services within Vivante. Berna has been promoted to the Dining Room Supervisor and will be dedicating her time to the food service operation. We appreciate the extra effort you gave while working with the activities team. The garden area in the Palm Courtyard has been planted with strawberries provided by a local grower. Mike visited Vivante at the invitation of our owner Curt Olson. He shared the history of the growing process and provided all of the plants for our garden in addition to many extras for staff and residents to enjoy at their homes. Marion Lafolette oversaw the planting and invited our residents to participate. Thank you Curt, Marion, Mike and his daughter Ella who came along to work with the residents in the planting. Be sure to stop by the garden and check out our strawberry garden! As our population increases, we are continually working to improve our transportation service within the community. Currently we have three drivers working Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. An activities team member will be added as a back up driver on Thursday and Friday. We encourage you to continue to check with the concierge for out of area trip requests or off hours needs. Thank you. Catholic communion is offered each Sunday by a Eucharistic minister in the library at 12:30 p.m . Mike is available each week. The library is located on the second floor . Kendall’s balance class is now being taught by LeeAnna. The class meets each Tuesday in the Motion Fitness Gym at 12:30 p.m. All are welcome to attend. Dante Fernandez, Cook Dante was selected as our “Associate of the Month” from the Food Service department. Dante was one of our original employees when the community opened and recently celebrated his two year anniversary with us. He was born in Yacaiba, Bolivia. “Yacaiba” translates as “fowl watering hole” and is very near the Argentine border. Dante grew up in Bolivia, attended college to study Psychology, and married his wife who is a dentist. They have three children–a daughter who is sixteen and two sons, ages eight and six. He worked as a private chauffer driver for a large transportation provider that offered both public and private service. He and his family moved the United States to find a better life. On arrival, he took a position at a car dealership detailing and driving their cars. His father-in-law approached him about a job in the restaurant business. He started as a dishwasher, was later promoted to making pastries, and then cooking. His wife now works as a dental assitant and his three brothers, sister and mother still live in Bolivia. Dante lives in Santa Ana with his family. His daughter likes to perform traditional Bolivian dances in full costume. Dante has two full time jobs, both as a prep cook. He most enjoys baking and appreciates the creativity allowed when making desserts at Vivante. He makes your cheesecake, banana bread, and peanut butter pies in addition to several other desserts. He still has an interest in Psychology and would like to return to a two-year program in addition to improving his English. In his free time, Dante enjoys going to the park with his children. He used to play soccer and was the goalie. In spite of his busy schedule, Dante prepares meals for his family and leaves them ready at home before starting his day. He takes the kids to school, goes back home to cook and clean around the house and then off to work. He works every day and enjoys special occasions to go out for dinner with his family. Their favorite is the Olive Garden restaurant. He has a dog named “Barbie” and says that his favorite food is from Bolivia, “pork fricassee”. Dante hopes to return to Bolivia this year to visit. February is Carnival time with all the beautiful dances, costumes, great food and more. Maria, the Food Service Director, shares that Dante is a “good person and that they are very happy to have him as part of the team. He is a very positive person and likes to experiment behind the scenes”. Thank you Dante for all of your contributions to Vivante. We are so pleased to have you here. November’s Brunch will be held on Thanksgiving day from 11:30 a.m. -1:30 p.m. in the Melange Dining Room. Reservations must be made with the Concierge or the dining room host. All showers within Vivante are equipped with a P-trap. It is essentially a 90 degree fitting on the outlet side of a U-bend, thereby creating a P-like shape and also referred to as a sink trap because it is installed under most house sinks. Because of its shape, the trap retains a small amount of water after the fixture’s use. This water in the trap creates a seal that prevents sewer gas from passing from the drain pipes back into the occupied space of the building. Essentially all plumbing fixtures including sinks, bathtubs, and toilets must be equipped with either an internal or external trap. If you have an additional shower in your apartment or bathroom sink that is not used very often, it would be helpful to occasionally turn on the water for a moment to assist with the elimination of any possible sewer gas smell build up.
