News and events in Derbyshire Freemasonry Issue 11 - November 2015 DERBYSHIRE TODAY Provincial Carol Service The annual Provincial Carol Service is to be held, by kind permission of the Dean, at Derby Cathedral, on Sunday 13th December at 3.00 pm. The Order of Service is on sale through Lodges and will be available on the day. All proceeds are to be split between the Long Eaton Children’s Fun Fair and the Provincial Grand Charity. Movember - in support of men’s health A team of Derbyshire Freemasons, under the captaincy of Bro. Pete Walklate of Hartington Lodge No. 1085, are seeking your support and sponsorship as they grow moustaches in aid of men’s health in the annual Movember appeal. Prestonian Lecture It is over two years since W Bro. Tony Harvey last delivered his 2012 Prestonian Lecture, “Scouting & Freemasonry: two parallel organisations?”, in Derbyshire. In the last three years he has delivered it on 73 occasions and raised over £48,000 for charity. On Tuesday 10th November he will once more deliver his lecture within the Province, at Mundy Grove Lodge No. 506 in Long Eaton. Bookings should be made direct to the Lodge’s Assistant Secretary, Bro. New District of Derbyshire in the Order of Royal & Select Masters The former District of the North Midlands in the Order of Royal & Select Masters has been divided to create two new Districts. The seven Councils meeting in Derbyshire have been formed into a new Derbyshire District while the remaining seven have been formed into a new North Midlands District. On Thursday, 29th October 2015, R.Ill.Comp. Kessick Jones, Deputy Grand Master for the Order, constituted the two new Districts and installed R.Ill.Comp. Alan Beckerton as the first District Grand Master for Derbyshire and R.Ill.Comp. John Clements as the District Grand Master for the North Midlands. Assisting were R.Ill.Comp. His Hon. Ian Alexander, QC, and R.Ill.Comp. Bill Summers, PDistGM. R.Ill.Comp Summers is credited with building the former North Midlands District to become the largest in the Order. R . I l l . Co m p. Beckerton was initiated into Pioneer Lo d g e N o . 9065 in 1986, since when he has attained senior rank in many Masonic Orders. He served as Pro v i n c i a l Junior Grand Wa r d e n i n 2004 and was appointed Past Assistant Grand Director of Ceremonies in UGLE in 2009. In the Royal Arch he was the Provincial Grand Scribe N in 2000. Having been brought up in Lancashire, Alan took his first degree at the University of Newcastle-upon-Tyne and then completed a PhD in Applied Biochemistry and Nutrition at the University of Nottingham. He worked for many years as an Animal Nutritionalist before moving into sales management. In 2003 he became the General Manager at Derby Masonic Hall and has established it as a first class Masonic venue, admired by many visitors. He is married to Sandra and they have two adult children and three grand-children. As his Deputy District Grand Master, R.Ill. Comp. Beckerton appointed Ill.Comp. Brian Collyer and as the District Principal Conductor of the Work he appointed Ill.Comp. Bryan Tynan. Published by the Provincial Grand Lodge & Chapter of Derbyshire 1 News and events in Derbyshire Freemasonry Quarterly Communication of UGLE A party of Derbyshire Freemasons (Master Masons and all ranks above) is to attend the Quarterly Communication of Grand Lodge to be held at Freemasons’ Hall, Great Queen Street, London, on Tuesday, 9th December. The group will attend to support the Provincial Grand Master, RW Bro. Steven Varley. The party will leave from the south car park of Derby County FC, Pride Park, by coach at 07.00 and will attend the luncheon following the Quarterly Communication at the Grand Connaught Rooms. Steven Varley’s appointment as Provincial Grand Master, the MW The Grand Master has authorised RW Bro. Varley to confer fifteen additional first appointments to past rank on members of this Province. The brethren to be honoured, all of whom are Past Masters, will be invested as Past Provincial Grand Stewards on Monday, 30th November, at the regular meeting of the Derbyshire Lodge of Installed Masters No. 8509, at Derby Masonic Hall. The Provincial Grand Master will attend, accompanied by the present Officers of Provincial Grand Lodge, and will open Provincial Grand Lodge, in order that the brethren so honoured may be invested with their new ranks. Granville Angell, PAGPur, the Prestonian Lecturer for 2006. All bookings are to be made via the Lodge’s Assistant Secretary. T h re e g e n e r a t i o n s o f t h e Brookes family The Deputy Provincial Grand Master, W Bro. Brian Evangelista, PSGD, was present at Bretwalda Lodge No. 6930 on Monday, 19th October, and witnessed a special occasion in the Lodge’s history. Bro. Clive Philip Brookes was Installed as the Worshipful Master. He is the son of the late W Bro. Eric Clive Brookes, PJGD, who was Provincial Grand Almoner for many years. The Brookes dynasty continued when he appointed and invested as Junior Warden his own son, Bro. Jonathon Clive Brookes. At the same meeting, W Bro. David Bevan retired after 14 years as an excellent and hard working Secretary. W Bro. Ron Murray was appointed in succession to David. After some lean years, the Lodge has succeeded recently in introducing an enthusiastic group of younger Freemasons, who are keen to work together to ensure the Lodge’s long term future.
