DEXTER PAYNE QUINTET
Presenting instrumental excitement from traditions
rooted in Brazil. The line-up is an alchemical recipe
for instant joy, playing melodic jazz of the highest
level. Evidence? Pra Você on Dexofon Records.
Recently home from Florianopolis Wine & Jazz Fest in Brazil, Dexter Payne has
performed from Tijuana to Paris, from Montreal to Buenos Aires. Clarinet finalist #8 in
Downbeat Readers Polls 2004 & ʼ06 and 2011 International Blues Challenge winner, his
love is “musica brasileira” - chorinho, baião and samba. It all started on a mid 90s
odyssey, performing with bands and artists throughout Latin America beginning in
Tijuana and working slowly south, all the way to Buenos Aires. In Brazil, where he
recorded with Beth Carvalho, met and recorded with the late Gaudencio Thiago de
Mello, Payne found a musical home. He returned home to record and coproduce 4
Brazilian CDs with grammy-nominated de Mello in New York. After a 2 year partial hiatus
on the international blues circuit, Payne is back, featuring a long-standing group of
brilliant instrumentalists. Raoul Rossiter and Bill Kopper are at the heart of samba & jazz
band Ginga. Dave Willey composes and leads Hamster Theatre (Cuniaform Records).
Victor Mestas, highly respected in his native Caracas, Venezuela, has extensive
recording credits there, including a Grammy winning CD.
