The resulting Dogs were known as Halls Heelers. After Halls death in 1870, the Dogs became available beyond the Hall family and their associates. They were subsequently developed into two modern breeds - the Australian Cattle Dog and the Australian Stumpy Tail Cattle Dog. The Aust Cattle Dog makes a wonderful family Dog that is best suited to other Dogs of the same breed, and needs strong leadership. The Australian Cattle Dog aka Blue Heeler or Red Heeler is a breed of Herding Dog originally developed in Australia for droving cattle long distances, over harsh terrain. It is a medium sized Dog with a short, thick coat of either brown or black hair that is speckled through a white base coat giving the appearance or a blue or red coloured Dog. It is an energetic, intelligent Cattle Dog with a very independent, dominating streak. The the term heeler refers to their innate desire to nip at the heels of cattle or small children when running. This is a Dog who forms strong bonds with its owners and can be very protective of them and their possessions. 6 www.woofmag.com.au An “Oasis on the freeway ”providing friendly service and Real Food that will make you “feel good.” A great selection of organic, Gluten Free food & delicious organic coffee. A version amended by Jack Moses captured the imagination of Australians both in the bush and throughout the colonies in the early 1900s. The move to create a monument to the early pioneers, featuring the now famous Dog, grew through the 1920s, culminating in the unveiling of the Dog on the Tucker Box statue on 28 November 1932. The legend was then immortalised in popular song by Jack O’Hagan, author of Along the Road to Gundagai, with Where the Dog Sits on the Tucker Box. The Dog and its many songs and poems have put Gundagai firmly on the world map. They are said to celebrate his birthday each year in November, so if you are travelling through Gundegai, spend a moment to think about the Bullockies who travelled those roads and enjoy some delicious food on route. Exercise is great for both you and your dog, but if your dog is pulling you down the street - the enjoyment quickly disappears! With time and patience, you can teach your dog to walk by your side and not pull on their lead. Here are some suggestions: Walking beside you with no lead • At home take your dog off lead • Have treats with you • Start walking, but don’t look, talk or give your dog any attention • If your dog comes to your side, give them a treat • If the dog runs past you, walk in the opposite direction, treat them for coming towards you • Keep rewarding your dog for being by your side Adding a cue • Use a word like “close”, “side” or “here” to cue your dog for the behaviour of loose lead walking • When your dog is beside you, give your cue, walk a few steps and then reward your dog • Over time you are going to give your cue and walk further before you reward your dog Eventually you will be able to give your dog the cue and not constantly reward them for walking by your side make regular visits to health care facilities and offer the wonderful benefits of pet therapy. This involves spending time with residents and patients, offering a chat, a floppy Make like a tree • When your dog pulls on the lead, STOP still like a tree, the moment they release the tension on the lead, move forward, praising the dog • When your dog comes back to your side, reward them with a treat 8 www.woofmag.com.au Delta Therapy Dogs is a heartwarming program that brings the joys of animal companionship to those who need it most. Together with your special dog you will be able to Very quickly your dog will learn that if they stay at your side, tasty treats are coming their way! Once you start working on walking with a loose lead, you can’t go back to letting your dog pull on the lead or you are un-doing all the hard work you have already done! Does your dog have a fantastic temperament? Are you looking for an interesting volunteer role? ear to listen and a paw to shake. The pipes that deliver water to households today are often over 100 years old and mostly made from galvanised steel. The build up from deposits of rust and other foreign material leads to pipes being partially blocked and much of this residue ends up in our water supply. Todays Tap Water has a pH7 with added rust, chlorine, flouride and many other contaminants that our pets should not ingest. Our trials show that by drinking ALKA Power, Dogs in particular dont burn the grass (Yellow) when urinating. It also greatly reduces odours in their stools and coats. !"#$%&'(&)#*+(%#$* In small aquariums it makes the water last longer due to the high pH9 - 10 oxygenating in the water. Animals who drink Alkaline Water greatly benefit in overall health and wellness. Most Pet diets are highly Acidic and drinking Alkaline Water will significantly neutralise their systems The image below shows the pH levels of a number of waters on the market. The more yellow they are, the more acidity. The higher the alkalinity, the more hydration and absorbtion they provide. !"#$%5)%*+'#%,-.(/;% o 0IT*# $25"4# B<# 03<64*IB*U<# +"5"<6# *+,# ?2<6# =2?9"IIB+8# 7B87;9"4L24?*+="# *IT*IB+"# 5*6"4# N4*+,D# o H742387# S"*4<# 2L# 942,3=6# ,"@"I29?"+6J# 0IT*# $25"4# 7*<# 9"4L"=6",# *# 9*6"+6",# 942="<<# 62# ,"IB@"4# 03<64*IB*U<# 2+IS# 0II# .*634*I# '2+B=# 1*I=B3?# 0IT*IB+"# 5*6"4# 5B67# *# ="4CO",# <6*NI"# 9/#R;FEJ#*=C@"#?B+"4*I<#*+,#67"#36?2<6#934B6S# o 0II# .*634*I# '2+B=# 1*I=B3?# 0IT*IB+"# V# G6*NI"# 9/# R;FE#W#P3*4*+6"",#/S,4*C2+D## o 0IT*# $25"4# B<# =2??BX",# 62# 4",3=B+8# 67"# "+@B42+?"+6*I# B?9*=6# *+,# N2XI"<# *4"# ?*,"# L42?#FEEY#&"=S=I",#$-HD# <=>=?@ABC% o <39"4#D49/#E3F%G%H($-I51453F% o 4"9I"+B<7"<#J#+652&K=))(3E#+% L53(/#+)% o B+=4"*<"<#<+--9%?+-.% o "+7*+="<#J5/62+#E-3%G% L($#7-+5)&% o B+=4"*<"<#=3(/F4% o N22<6<#@&&23(%B4)$(&% o <399246<#*3EMNI59#3$K*3EM *F53F% o *<<B<6<#!(5F"$%J-3$/-+% !"#$%&#'()%*+'#%,-.(/%&-/(%0-.(/12+%% $"#3%$4056#+%7-8+(9%.#$(/:% !"#$%&'()#*+,#-./0.1-#234#5*6"4# 6742387#*#9*6"+6",#:;<6"9#942="<<>#62# 4"?2@"#0AA#B?934BC"<#94"<"+6#67*6#*4"# 84"*6"4#67*+#DEEEF?B=42+<D# www.alkapower.com.au !"#67"+#'.(%G-#67B<#%AH&0#$%&-# !0H-B67#0AA#.0H%&0A#B2+B=#=*I=B3?J# ?*8+"<B3?J#64*="#<2,B3?#*+,# 926*<<B3?D# &"<3I6K#1I"*+#4"L4"<7B+8#6*<6"#*+,#3+BM3"# N"+"O6<#;#P%0&0.H--Q#9/#A"@"I#R;FED## IBWA International Bottled Water Association 10 www.woofmag.com.au /S,4*6"<#S234#N2,S#L*<6"4D# Contact: Steve Pettaras, Director of Sales Mobile: 0411-155-199 PODS 4 PETS • Australian Made • Machine Washable • Quick Drying - Retains Shape • Lightweight & Transportable • Interchangeable Covers • 2% of Profits donated to Animal Charities Shop Online www.pods4pets.com.au www.facebook.com/pods4pets info@pods4pets.com.au Pet beds your whole family will LOVE NEWCASTLE DOG RESCUE WWW.DOGRESCUENEWCASTLE.COM.AU Dog Rescue Newcastle is a group of volunteers dedicated to the rescue of abandoned, neglected or abused companion animals. They rescue dogs and cats from death row at local pounds and put them into loving foster homes until they can find permanent homes for them. They are self-funded and rely solely upon animal loving people like you to help where they can. If you are no longer able to keep your rescue pet at any time, even years later, we will help you rehome him or her, or we will even take him or her back. Why Adopt a Rescue Dog or Cat There are many good reasons why it is better to adopt a rescued dog or cat than to get one from any other source: You know what you are getting. The dog or cat’s foster carer can tell you all about their personality, preferences and needs. They can advise about the suitability of their foster dog or cat for your home. While in foster care, our dogs and cats have time to recuperate from being in the pound. Their health is assessed and are treated if necessary so they are healthy when they are adopted. Rescue Dogs Jack and Jill now thankfully in foster care. Jill, 19 years young and still enjoying life in her twilight years thanks to the comfort of her new Pod. DRN relies on the help of volunteers and people to adopt these Dogs. 2% of all Pods4Pets Profits are donated to Rescue Groups to ensure that Dogs are receiving the care they need. If you would like to help or donate please contact Newcastle Dog Rescue drn.foster.coordinator@gmail.com www.pods4pets.com.au All our dogs and cats are desexed, vaccinated, and microchipped and have their flea and worm treatments up to date. Adult dogs are also lifetime registered with the NSW Animal Registry. If you adopt a puppy or kitten who was too young to be desexed before adoption, the cost of his or her desexing at our vet is included in your adoption fee. You must have the animal desexed before they are 5 months old. It is also your responsibility to register the animal after desexing, or no later than 6 months old. While in foster care, they receive house training and basic obedience training. We are always here to support you for as long as you own one of our rescue dogs or cats. If you have any questions or concerns at any time just give us a ring. We can help if your pet gets lost. We can help to arrange temporary or holiday care. Pedigree pets often experience more health problems than the hardy cross breeds we mainly rescue. If you don’t have the time or dedication needed to raise and train a puppy or kitten then we are your best source of adult dogs and cats. You can skip past the house training, chewing, and chaos of a baby and choose an adult. Adults are already trained and their size and temperament are known …and you can teach an old dog new tricks! It sets a good example for your children. Adopting a rescue pet presents a wonderful opportunity to teach your children the essential values of compassion, caring, and the selfless act of giving someone a second chance. Most importantly, by adopting a pet rescued from death row at the pound, you are saving a life! Topically: excellent herb to use topically for joint and muscle pain. Excellent natural flea and tick treatment Contraindications: Generally considered safe. Toxicology and Adverse effects 16 www.woofmag.com.au Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis) is a well known culinary herb that is a vital part of the Mediterranean cuisine. Rosemary belongs to the mint family (Lamiaceae) and is native to the Mediterranean. It is cultivated worldwide and grows best in Mediterranean climate. Apart from giving Mediterranean dishes their authentic aroma it also has many health benefits. Rosemary has been used for centuries as a medicinal herb mainly as a tonic and to improve the memory. It has many active constituents like volatile oil, flavonoids and tannins. The dried leaves are used to make infusions and tinctures. For its ability to stimulate the circulation Rosemary is also known as the “European Ginkgo” as it has similar effects. This makes Rosemary very valuable to improve memory and mental alertness. It can be used to address health problems caused by weak circulation like hypotension or a poor digestion. Rosemary has also positive effects on the liver. It protects the liver cells from damage and also aids the liver to clear toxic substances. Therefore Rosemary is useful in primary liver problems and digestive disorders. Rosemary is a very strong antioxidant. Antioxidants protect cells and are useful to prevent disease and aging, support organs and body functions and aid convalescence. Even the food industry makes use of this activity and uses Rosemary to conserve food, especially meat. Creams and salves containing Rosemary can be applied to the skin and are used to help with joint and muscle pain. Rosemary is a safe herb to use. No adverse effects are expected if not comsumed in large quantities. Rosemary can also be given alongside conventional medication as herb drub interactions are unknown. At herbalpetcare I am using Rosemary as a tonic for the elderly dogs, patients suffering from liver and gastrointestinal disease and for dogs in need of antioxidant support. Tinctures and extracts of the Rosemary leaf are highly efficient but why not improve and support your dog’s health by adding fresh Rosemary leaves to their diet? Bowen is a soft tissue technique where by the Therapist applies a transverse move across the fibres of muscles, ligaments and tendons whilst having a marked influence on the connective tissue. The technique also influences known trigger points (pain points) and acupuncture points. Bowen is not massage. Bowen Therapists do a single transverse (two directional) move at a specific location and then leave the area alone, whereas massage therapists often do repeated movements along muscle fibres, working throughout the body. The technique was developed by an Australian Tom Bowen but the technique is also well known and practiced internationally with both people and animals. How can Bowen therapy help dogs? Bowen Therapy stimulates the soft tissue, loosens and separates the fibres, increases hydration and metabolic function to all soft tissue. Bowen increases circulatory and lymphatic flow; stimulates neural pathways and works closely with the meridian and acupuncture systems. Bowen has also been successful with animals that have poor eating habits, anxiety, performance stress, breathing problems, hormonal disorders and skin conditions. We all know how hard it is to comfort a Human who has lost a much loved pet, but at least we can talk them through it and get them to vocalise their feelings, but comforting a dog that has lost a mate is a little more complicated, and requires a little more thought. Our four legged friends demonstrate their sadness in different ways, some refusing to eat, others try to escape, perhaps in search of their missing companion, and some just seem to know instinctively whats happened and become needy, following you around from room to room. What ever type of loss they’ve experienced, you need to ensure that special thought and care is taken to help them cope. There are many things you can do to help them get ontop of things, regular walks and outdoor play, but dont leave them alone too much, you need to keep up the routine as exercise is natures way of releasing endorphines that will bring about feelings of joy and contentment. Reward them with a new variety of delicious healthy treats to make things interesting again. The two of you will experience that connection and it will help you grieve the loss together which will set the stage for a new beginning. Remember to keep up with the normal training routine, if you fail to take that morning stroll or afternoon walk, it will likely impact your dog negatively and highlight the loss in their lives. It is up to you to be a good leader and to show them how to overcome the sadness in their lives. 18 www.woofmag.com.au Photo coutesy of 100 Loyal Faces Whatever you do, dont rush out and replace the lost dog as this is often counter productive and can make things worse. Its not easy to repair a broken heart whether dog or human, spend time together and you will find that time will heal you both. If you feel your dog is not responding to the extra love and attention, despite your attempts, then you might want to ask your homeopath or holistic vet for some rescue remedy, it can be great for anxiety when grieving or feeling out of sorts. You will find many new delicious natural foods and treats that will benefit your beloved dog, but most of all they will need your unconditional love and committment. Your positive leadership and understanding is the thing that will pull them through. August/Spetember 2015 WOOF MAG 19 Easy ‘Home Made’ Natural Diet NEW Grain Free "My Complete Mix mimics the gut content of a prey animal and provides complete balance when easily mixed with fresh meat, just like Mother Nature intended." www.vetsallnatural.com.au WRITTEN BY DR BRUCE SYME (BVSc) (Hons) - FOUNDER VETS ALL NATURAL A truly natural balanced diet consists of vegetable matter, raw muscle meat, organs and raw bones. Mix with Fresh Meat Dr Bruce Syme BVSc (Hons) IVAS (Cert) Founder Vets All Natural JOIN THE RAW FOOD REVOLUTION This combination provides the perfect balanced diet which canines and felines have thrived on for millions of years. To make feeding a balanced natural raw diet easy, I have formulated Complete Mix muesli which represents the vegetable matter portion of your dog or cat’s healthy truly natural diet. It mimics the gut content of a prey animal and when mixed with raw meat provides a perfectly balanced diet. Just like being in the wild! Raw - It just makes sense! Dogs and cats are not designed or equipped to properly digest and absorb cooked food, as we humans are. They have been evolving on this planet for millions of years eating fresh raw food. Their mouths, teeth, stomach, intestines, organs and enzymes, are all evolved to chew, process, digest and absorb raw food. The ingredients of Complete Mix are air dried to prevent any thermal damage to proteins, vitamins and enzymes. The ingredients are formulated in accordance with the principals of raw food. Economical Raw Feeding When Complete Mix is blended with raw meat, it becomes an economical Biologically Appropriate Raw Food (BARF) diet. Dog and cat owners can save money and still feed the best. You simply add Complete Mix to the appropriate ration of raw meat, like kangaroo, rabbit, beef, mutton, lamb or organic chicken and you have a 100% preservative and additive free, completely natural, raw, perfectly balanced meal. You can feel proud you are giving your pet the best food possible. Avoid Modern Diseases There is a growing stockpile of scientific evidence that links the long term consumption of cooked commercial pet foods, to the development of a vast array of common illnesses and degenerative diseases. Skin allergies, dermatitis, stomach sensitivities, teeth and gum disease, arthritis, renal failure, ear infections, obesity, reproductive failure and anal gland blockage can all be linked to improper nutrition. More and more veterinarians, breeders and dog lovers across the world are joining the “Raw Food Revolution” because they get that fact that multinational pet food companies are more focussed on profit than maximising pet health and longevity and very simply, feeding what canines and felines have evolved on over millions of years and feeding what they would eat in the wild, has got to be the best diet for your dog or cat. My firsthand experience in veterinary practice over 25 years has also confirmed that feeding a balanced raw diet not only increases health and longevity generally, but it also reduces the chances of our much loved becoming ill with the modern diseases that are caused by many over processed over cooked modern diets. You will need to spend much time reassuring them that they are loved and even then they will have the tendancy to be quite stubborn, but rest assured they will snap out of it eventually and delight you with their antics. Scorpio has a great sense of humour. You may find however, your Scorpio Dog will shut off completely when being scolded, when one of their moods takes a hold, so take care to discipline them with love. Scorpio Dog loves plenty of good quality sleep time and woo betide you if you disturb them when they are napping. All Scorpio Dogs have a deep interest in mating, both male and female though your Scorpio bitch may not allow anyone to get close enough, preferring to weigh up her options, she considers this the qualifying process in which to evaluate her suitors. This is a Dog who loves to control things, you and your household including any visitors you may have. Scorpio simply loves holding court. They love drama and you will need to posess good negotiating skills and be a very quick thinker, there is never a dull moment with a Scorpio Dog. They are basically an affectionate Dog, once you have them figured out, its a cynch. They are best suited to a water sign owner particularly Cancer who will have the skill and the patience to deal with such a character. Swimming will also increase their cardiovascular system and can reduce weight if they have gained a few kilos. It builds and strengthens muscles, increases energy levels and can reduce painful swelling in joints. Does your dog find it hard to get up off their bed, can’t jump in the car, needs to be lifted, and hesitates to climb up and down stairs? Does he/she tire easily and lags behind on walks, suffers stiffness, especially after resting, reluctant to play or run around? Then your dog is showing signs of aging. Did you know that dogs over the age of 7 are classified as aged? Aging is inevitable and we can assist in this process by slowing it down and keeping our dogs fit and healthy. Aging dogs still need exercise as well as a good diet, health and dental checks yearly, a good supportive bed, mental stimulation and most of all lots of love. Arthritis is most common in older dogs and can occur in any joint, most commonly the legs, neck and back (spine) and can cause pain and inflammation along with stiffness, lameness and poor mobility. Exercise for the older dog often improves proprioception, coordination, balance, strength, and mobility. 28 www.woofmag.com.au Swimming in warm water is important especially for arthritic dogs as it allows the muscles to work more efficiently and helps to aid blood circulation without risk of cramping. Fitness and stamina will increase and you may see improvement in climbing stairs, getting in and out of the car, increased comfort with other activities such as going for walks and becoming more interested in life in general. Exercising your older dog will promote longevity and create a better quality of life for your loved pet. Just because they are older now doesn’t mean they can’t have some gentle exercise and have an outing! K9 Swim at Londonderry, NSW, offer Senior Programs for the older dog or you can just come and have a leisurely swim in their indoor heated pool specifically designed for dogs. They also offer a range of natural health products that can assist in general well being and arthritic conditions. I do not cure animals, animals cure themselves, if given the right tools. I am the animal’s advocate, providing an insight into what tools are required for healing to occur. The holistic perspective of health is based on nature’s principles, and incorporates essential elements which must be practised for health and healing to manifest. It is a 30 www.woofmag.com.au proactive approach to disease prevention and is what I call ‘The Path to Wellness’. I developed the Path to Wellness to empower pet guardians with an understanding of why their pet is suffering from disease, and to inspire them to take an active role in the healing process. Holistic health is not intended as a one-off fix for a singular symptom or diagnosis. It is an ongoing lifestyle, a journey that takes commitment and change. The five essential elements that make up The Path to Wellness are based on ancient Nature Cure wisdom and include: • Natural Diet • Daily exercise (physical and mental) • Sunshine and Fresh Air • Grounding in Nature - barefoot contact with the earth, grass and sea • Avoiding or minimising toxic drugs and chemicals and unnecessary vaccines We will explore each of these five steps in more detail in subsequent issues, so watch this space! Take your first step along The Path to Wellness today, by getting outside in the sunshine and exploring nature with your pet. Together you will discover the true state of health that is intended to be our natural way of life. Tel: (02) 8011 0205. What’s ‘Normal’ Poop for Your Dog? Generally speaking, a healthy canine stool is moist and firm, and has a mild odor. Dogs fed processed kibble (which I don’t recommend) typically produce large quantities of voluminous poop for several reasons. First, most kibble manufacturers addunnaturally high amounts of fiber (beet pulp, soybean, and rice hulls, as well as cellulose,” otherwise known as wood fiber, or sawdust). The normal fiber content of the ancestral diet Stool of a Kibble Fed Dog is between 4 and 6 percent. The fiber content of many dry foods is greater than 15 percent, and most “diet” or “lite” foods contain more than 28 percent fiber. Dogs eating kibble also produce a stinkier poop because their bodies aren’t designed to absorb certain nutrients in those diets (for example, grain and other starches, including the unnaturally high potato and pea content found in many “grain free” foods). In some instances, it can feel like your dog is passing out more volume of waste than the food volume she ate! Raw fed dogs, on the other hand, tend to produce significantly less poop that is also smaller in size, firmer, and significantly less stinky. Dogs eating a high mineral raw food diet will produce poo that turns a much lighter color within 24 hours and disintegrates very quickly. Dogs eating raw foods that could be too high in calcium or bone pass white, chalky feces, and may suffer from obstipation. August/Spetember 2015 WOOF MAG 33 Stool of Dog Fed Raw Diet with too much Calcium Regardless of your dog’s diet, it’s important to know what her poop looks and smells like normally so that you’ll be immediately aware of any changes in frequency, consistency, size, color, or smell. One of the most obvious signs of a potential health problem in dogs is diarrhea, and diarrhea can have different characteristics depending on its cause. Types of Dog Diarrhea In the following situations, unless the problem clears up on its own within a day or so, I recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian. Soft Stool A soft stool with no visible blood or mucous might indicate either a dietary change or indiscriminate eating. However, it can also signal the presence of an intestinal parasite such as giardia. A greasy-looking gray stool can be a sign of too much fat in your dog’s diet, which can trigger pancreatitis, which is inflammation of the pancreas that can range from very mild to life threatening. A black, tarry stool typically indicates the presence of old blood somewhere in the 34 www.woofmag.com.au Excess Fat in Stool (steatorrhea) dog’s digestive system. It can be a sign of injury to the GI tract from indiscriminate eating, and it can also be a sign of a very serious disease such as cancer. Watery Stool Watery diarrhea can be a sign of stress or a viral (e.g., parvovirus) or parasitic infection and can lead very quickly to dehydration, especially in puppies. A soft stool containing or coated with mucous may indicate the presence of parvovirus or parasites. A soft stool with visible worms, eggs, or other uninvited guests is a clear indiction of a parasite infestation. Stool with Mucus Firm, soft, or runny poop containing blood or blood clots is almost always a sign of a serious health problem requiring immediate attention. Fresh blood indicates current bleeding, typically from the large intestine or the anus or anal glands. There could be a perforation of the intestinal wall from something the dog ingested, or from the eruption of a tumor or ulcer. CAUSES OF DIARRHEA Since diarrhea is a symptom of multiple health problems, it also has multiple causes. These include: • Change in diet • Toxins • Inflammatory bowel disease • Food intolerance, sensitivity, allergy • Idiopathic hemorrhagic gastroenteritis • Small intestine bacterial overgrowth (SIBO) • Intestinal parasites • Lymphangiectasia • Histoplasma enteritis or colitis • Indiscriminate eating • Tumors • Intestinal obstruction • Bacterial infection • Rectal polyps • Irritable bowel syndrome • Viral infection • Exocrine pancreatic insufficiency • Histiocytic ulcerative colitis quickly. Once he’s out, he dashes off to find a suitable spot and passes loose, watery stool. Alternatively, if we’re not around when the urgency hits, we come home to an accident on the floor. But what many dog parents don’t realize is that sometimes diarrhea causes straining to go, making it look more like constipation than diarrhea. That’s because diarrhea upsets the normal rhythm of the muscle contractions in your dog’s intestinal tract, giving her the feeling that she constantly needs to poop. So even though she’s hunched over and straining, her colon might be empty after repeated bouts of loose stool. And in cases of chronic diarrhea, many dogs don’t have accidents in the house and don’t have fecal urgency, they simply always have loose, watery stools. Other symptoms that can go along with diarrhea include fever, lethargy, malaise, loss of appetite, and dehydration. Puppies, small dogs, and seniors are at risk of dehydration from just one round of explosive diarrhea. Small bowel diarrhea can also be confusing to owners, as the first part of the stool is firm, followed by soft or very loose second half of the bowel movement, which can indicate a variety of issues including small intestinal bacterial overgrowth, maldigestion, malabsorption, food intolerances, exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, dybiosis, or IBS. Small Bowel Diarrhea The Not-So-Obvious Symptoms of Diarrhea When most of us think of a dog with diarrhea, we picture the poor pup standing anxiously at the door, needing to get out August/Spetember 2015 WOOF MAG 35 If you see blood in your pet’s stool or she’s weak or shows other signs of debilitation along with the diarrhea, you should make an appointment with the vet. If your dog seems fine but is experiencing recurrent bouts of diarrhea, it’s time for a checkup. It’s important to bring a sample of your dog’s stool to your appointment, even if it’s watery. Use a plastic bag and shovel a bit in there to take with you. This will help your vet identify potential underlying causes for the diarrhea. EASY SPRINKLE TUB FOR: ANIMALS • BEDDING • CARPETS • GARDENS LY AL This is a different bland diet from the traditional ground beef and rice combination that is often recommended. AC Home Care for Diarrhea in Healthy Dogs If your pet is an adult, otherwise healthy, and behaving normally except for the diarrhea, I recommend you withhold food – NOT WATER – for 12 hours. At the 12-hour mark, offer a bland diet. I recommend cooked ground turkey and plain 100 percent pumpkin. My favorite all-natural anti-diarrhea remedy is an herb called slippery elm bark. I recommend always having some on hand so when you need it, it’s right there. Slippery elm is safe for puppies, adults, and geriatric dogs and it is completely safe when blended with other medications. I recommend about a half teaspoon for each 10 pounds of body weight, mixed into the bland diet twice daily. There’s never been a better time to CE Mix the cooked ground turkey and pumpkin or sweet potato 50-50 in your dog’s bowl. Feed 2 to 3 small meals a day until stools are back to 100 percent, which should happen in about 72 hours. TE If your dog seems fine after a bout of diarrhea -- meaning she’s acting normal, with normal energy – it’s safe to simply keep an eye on her to insure her stool returns to normal within a day or so. But if you notice she’s also sluggish, running a fever or feels warm to the touch, or there’s a change in her behavior, you should contact your veterinarian. F-OFF LI leanest ground beef contains a lot of fat, and fat can worsen a case of diarrhea. Rice, even though it’s bland, is very fermentable. Fermenting rice in the colon of a pet with diarrhea tends to increase gassiness. Also, rice tends to just zip right through the GI tract, exiting with the next bout of explosive diarrhea totally undigested. TRIB When to call the Vet Most healthy dogs experience an occasional episode of loose stool or diarrhea that resolves within 12 to 24 hours. The underlying issue in most of these cases is these cases is indiscriminate eating or stress. However, any dog has the potential to become very ill from chronic bouts of diarrhea.
