Letter from the Principal
September 12, 2013
Dear Doherty Parents,
Hope this edition of the Doherty Newsletter reaches you all in good health and spirits! The new year has
gotten off to a rousing start and we are excited to have the 2013-14 school year underway. As we have done
for the past two years, the first day of school was devoted to the Freshman class so they could better acclimate
themselves to high school without the upper classmen here. The day went extremely well and we received
very positive feedback form parents and students alike. I would like to give a shout out to Ms. Lianne
Thiessen, the sponsor of our Link Crew, for organizing and carrying out a very good day for the freshman.
Again, a major theme for this year is that we will not be doing “business as usual” in terms of instruction. Dr.
Gledich, the superintendent of schools, has challenged all schools to “create Awesome” in our schools and
our students. I have challenged our staff to give quality Tier I instruction to ALL students in their classes and
to make sure that everyone “gets it” before they leave their classes. We continued our upward trend on TCAP
testing and I am proud, but still ready to increase those scores and have more students score in the proficient
and advanced categories in this coming year’s TCAP test.
Please visit our website, as that is the “window” into our house and, as usual, you are always welcome to
come by and pay us a visit. Just sign in at the West entrance and you can access the building as you wish.
Please know that you are a very important partner in your son or daughter’s education. We need you as an
ally!!
Have a great year and if you need anything, please feel free to drop me a phone call or an e-mail.
Sincerely,
Dennis Vigil, Principal

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY
Doherty High School’s Arista Chapter of the National Honor Society is gearing up for the
2013-2014 school year. The first task is inviting prospective members, those students with a
3.75 GPA or higher, to submit their information for consideration. Letters will be sent by the
3rd week of September to those students whose GPA qualifies them for possible membership in NHS. As part of the invitation process, students will be asked to complete an information form, outlining their extracurricular activities, community service, and leadership
participation. These information forms, along with a character rating form from Doherty
faculty, are evaluated by a five member Faculty Council. Those students who qualify will
then be invited to join NHS and will be required to attend a formal induction ceremony, usually held in early October, marking their official membership in Doherty NHS. If you have
questions regarding NHS, please contact Rob Gardner, robert.gardner@d11.org, 328-6503.
ATTENTION ALL VOLUNTEERS!
Doherty High School could not function without the help of our volunteers! We thank each and
everyone of you for your dedication in helping our kids. If you would like to join our volunteers at DHS
please give Michelle Perez a call at 328-6410. Volunteer Registration Forms are available from Mrs.
Perez in the main office. Volunteer Registration is a District 11 requirement and may be done online if
you prefer. The address is: www.d11.org/volunteer.
Volunteer hours not only benefit staff and students, they also bring funding to the school in the form
of Federal Grants. If you would like to volunteer please call Michelle Perez at 328-6410.
Thanks to everyone who volunteers!
PARENT ACCESS TO GRADES/ATTENDANCE
Zangle “Parent Connect” access to the Internet Site is: http://www.d11.org. Click on the Parent
Connect Logo on the home page. This program provides parents with direct access to student data via
the internet. Parents may view progress reports, attendance records, report cards, transcripts, test history,
selected student demographic information, the current student class schedule, behavior and health. All
teachers will enter attendance into Zangle on a daily basis.
Parent Connect PIN numbers and passwords are available by coming to the Data Processing
Office between the hours of 7:30 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. You may call Vickie Smith at 328-6464 if you
need further information.
Parents are required to show a picture ID in order to have access to their student’s information.

PARENT TEACHER CONFERENCES
Parents! Please read the important information below regarding Parent Teacher
Conferences. The emphasis of this school year is “every student, every day”.
In accordance with the emphasis we, as a staff, will continue the mid quarter
Parent Teacher Conference by teacher invitation only, as we did last year. This
seems to more fully meet the needs of students as they strive for success and
achievement in their high school careers.
Mid Quarter—by Invitation only

We are going to have our first day of conferences on Wednesday, September 25th. We will have a
normal school day on September 25th and then teachers will come back at 5:00 p.m. for specifically
identified conferences. These conferences will be for identified students who are in need of
interventions; parents will meet with teachers to get their son or daughter back on track after this first
four weeks of school. The conference/early intervention could be for grades, attendance, or both.
Parents will be called to set up an appointment.
End of Quarter—for everyone

The end of quarter conferences will be held on October 23rd and 24th.
Oct. 23rd will be our usual “arena conferencing” in the main gym beginning at 5:00 p.m. No
appointment is necessary for these arena conferences.
Oct. 24th will be the day that parents will be able to attend pre-scheduled appointments/
conferences to meet with their son or daughter’s teachers. These pre-scheduled conferences
with specific teachers will be from 8:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m. on Oct. 24th.
Our best hope is that we are servicing more students in a timelier fashion and truly
meeting the needs of “every student, every day”!
Do you want to make a difference?
Join SAC (School Accountability Committee) or PTSA (Parent/Teacher/Student Association).
The meetings are held from 6:00-7:30 PM. For more information get in touch with the SAC
Chair, Carrie Kohut at kohutcl@d11.org or PTA Co-Chairs, Charlene Paxton and Deb Roark.
Next meeting is September 30, 2013.

ATTENTION PARENTS OF SENIORS
FOR THE 2013-2014 SCHOOL YEAR
Would you like to honor your senior student and tell him or her how proud you are? Here’s your chance to put a
dedication and the most adorable baby pictures in the 2014 DHS yearbook. It is a great way for the students to
always know how much you cared during the most special and exciting times.
All submissions must be clearly labeled and be in to the yearbook staff by October 31, 2013. Last year we added the
option of going on the Herff Jones website, www.yearbookordercenter.com, and creating your ad yourself. You will
need to log into the site using the code 7827, which is specific for Doherty High School. Please see the DHS home
page- “Links to Baby Ad Creation” for a direct link to the site.
If you choose to have us create your baby ad, as we have in the past, please bring payment to the business office; once
you have paid you will need to leave your dedication and pictures, with a copy of your receipt, in Ms. Hawkinson’s
mailbox. ALL PAYMENTS MUST BE MADE THROUGH THE BUSINESS OFFICE. Please do not submit
your one and only picture, as they will not be returned. Copies can be made easily at photo processing centers
everywhere. It would be extremely helpful if dedications were emailed to Doherty.Yearbook@d11.org. If this is not
possible please make sure to turn in a printed copy of your dedication, typed in Microsoft Word, as well as a copy on a
disk. Dedications may be edited for content, clarity, or space. Only one student is permitted per ad unless the students
are siblings.
For the 2014 Stigme Chronou Yearbook, Baby Ads will be available in either black and white or full color
printing.

PRE-ARRANGED ABSENCES
The proper procedures for pre-arranged absences
(such as family vacations) are:

Contact the attendance secretaries.
Mrs. Watts at 328-6413 or
Mrs. Palmer at 328-6414
 The student must take a written note from
parent/guardian to all teachers prior to the absence.
It is then up to the student to get the homework assignments.
 Parents may obtain the school telephone numbers/
email addresses of teachers from the Doherty web
site: w3.d11.org/doherty
 Please be aware that such absences may have a detrimental effect on your child’s academic progress.
Attendance Policies and the Colorado State
Statute regarding School Attendance
STUDENT APPOINTMENTS OUT OF THE
BUILDING
When a student has an appointment the proper procedures are as follows:

Contact the attendance secretaries by note or call in
advance of the appointment:
Mrs. Watts at 328-6413 or
Mrs. Palmer at 328-6414
 If the student is aware of the appointment, it is up to
him/her to go to the attendance office and get a pass
in order to be released from class.
 The student is to check out through the attendance office prior to leaving the building.
Please work with us in keeping the lines of communication open at Doherty. When you are aware that your son
or daughter will be missing school, please inform the
Attendance Office immediately. By following this procedure, we can better serve your student’s academic
needs.
“Why can’t I excuse my student whenever I want, for whatever reason I want?”
We hear this over and over again by exasperated parents wondering why we ask the reason for the absence of their son or
daughter. Parents believe that since they are the parents they can and should be able to excuse students for babysitting,
oversleeping, students were tired from a late-night practice, or the students do not have their assignments ready to turn in. We, as
educators, cannot allow the state law to be bent or broken by parents who want to “help” their children by excusing them for any
and all reasons.
The state law is very clear and states in part, “Every child who has attained the age of seven years and is under the age of
seventeen shall attend school.” The law also states in part that, “legally, a parent can only excuse their child from attending school
for the reasons below”;
 Temporarily ill or injured
 Absent for an extended period due to physical, mental, or emotional disability
 Suspended, expelled, or denied admission to school
 In the custody of a court or law enforcement authorities
 Being instructed at home under a home-schooling situation
Now the state also gives school districts latitude in enforcing the law and that is why we do excuse for reasons such as leaving town
to attend a sibling’s graduation or, sadly, a funeral. We also show latitude to parents who have had a power failure and get their
student to school late one day. However, it would be irresponsible for the school to allow parents to dictate to us when and how we
excuse their students.
Please help us enforce the Colorado State Statute and excuse your students only for the above reasons. If something out of
the ordinary does occur we will work with you but remember that we cannot and will not excuse every other day of “my alarm did
not go off” or “I ran into a traffic jam on Academy Blvd.”
At Doherty High School we believe in setting standards that are fair, equitable, and enhance the ability for success of every
student. This begins, most undoubtedly, with good attendance. A summary of the Colorado State Attendance law and our
attendance policies and procedures can be found on pages 12 and 13 in the Student Handbook. If you have any questions, please
contact Mr. Ted Stevens at 328-6404 and he would be happy to meet with you to review our attendance policies. You can also call
me at anytime. My secretary, Ms. Bowyer, will make an appointment for you to see me if you wish. You may call her at 328-6411.
Thank you.

Gifted and Talented News
Sue Keller, GRT
Welcome to the start of a new school year. My name is Sue Keller and I will be the Gifted and Talented Resource
Teacher, GRT, for the upcoming school year. If you are interested in upcoming events that may be of interest to the
GT population, please send me an email at kellems@d11.org.
Upcoming events of note:

11/8/13.
2) The regular deadline for the 11/2/13 SAT test is 10/3/13. The regular deadline for the 12/7/13 SAT is
11/08/13.
3) The PSAT/NMSQT will be given at DHS on October 16th starting at 8 AM for any high school junior. In the
past, the cost of the test is $18.00. Checks should be made payable to Doherty High School. Students may
begin registering for the test in the counseling center with the counseling secretary beginning October 2 nd.
4) The Colorado Association for Gifted and Talented, CAGT, will be hosting the National Association for Gifted
Children conference this year on October 7th and 8th. The conference will be held at the Marriott Denver Tech
Center. For information please access http://coloradogifted.org.
As always, please feel free to contact me at kellems@d11.org or 328-6498 if you have any questions or concerns
about your child.
TOWING / IMMOBILIZATION (BOOTING) OF VEHICLES
Because of our School Board policy requiring the purchase of a $50 parking permit, any vehicle parked in
the Doherty High School parking lot that does not have a current & valid DHS parking permit posted on the
vehicles windshield (in the designated location) will be subject to being towed or immobilized (booted) at the
owner's expense. Please note that there are posted signs in the west and east parking lots stating this warning.
Any student who has purchased a Doherty High School parking permit and must bring a vehicle other that
the one with the DHS permit on it, must contact one of our Security Officers to secure a temporary permit. If a
student fails to secure a temporary permit, their vehicle will be ticketed and is subject to being towed or
immobilized (booted). If you have questions call Ms. Kim Southard, Assistant Principal (328-6405).
PARKING LOT/DROP OFF AND PICK UP
Please be aware of the bus loading zones located on Barnes Road. DO NOT STOP AND PARK IN THESE
AREAS TO PICK UP YOUR STUDENT. Signs are posted indicating “No Parking Bus Loading Zone” and it will be
blocked off daily for school bus pick ups. You may pick up your student in the east parking lot where there is less
traffic. Please notice however this is a right turn only exit! Help us in making your students drop off and pick up as safe
as possible.
Please note the Aspen Center directly across from DHS to the north has posted “No Trespassing or Student Drop Off”
signs. Please do not pull into this area to wait for your student or to drop them off. You could be ticketed for
trespassing. Remind your student not to park in any business area around the school. This is private property and the
owner of the property may have your vehicle towed.
Your cooperation in this matter is greatly appreciated. If anyone has ideas to make student drop off and pick up run
more smoothly and safer, we are always open to suggestions. Please contact Kim Southard, Assistant Principal at
328-6405 if you have any questions.

IMMUNIZATION REQUIREMENTS
AFFECTING DOHERTY HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS
The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment requires that every student 6th
through 12th grade student has received the Tdap (tetanus/diphtheria, pertussis) Booster.
As you will recall, students at the high school level are already required to have completed a 2nd MMR
immunization, and the Hepatitis B (three shot immunization) series, as well as documentation of completed DPT and
Polio series. If the student has a documented history of chicken pox disease, no Varivax immunization is required.
The Varivax requirement for the 2011-2012 school year is one dose for 9th through 11th grades.
Contact your health care provider for information/appointments OR you can obtain immunizations through:
El Paso County Department of Public Health & Environment (578-3272) –new location:
1675 West Garden of the Gods Rd (West of I-25)—on the 2nd floor
Ronald McDonald Care Mobile (866-6789) - call for availability dates/site locations.

SET Clinic - (776-8850)- 825 E. Pikes Peak (former St. Francis Hospital)
IMMUNIZATIONS ARE BY APPOINTMENT ONLY AT ALL OF THESE LOCATIONS.
Call to find out if the site takes Medicaid or CHP+ insurance or if the immunization is for a small fee or FREE.
Always bring the student’s immunization record to your appointment; then provide a copy of the immunization documentation to the registrar at Doherty High School.
The state of Colorado requires all students to have either an up-to-date immunization document or a signed exemption on file. Parents may sign a personal or religious exemption available in the registrar’s office or they can contact
their physician to obtain a medical exemption, if appropriate.
Please contact the registrar’s office if you have any questions or if you would like to speak personally to the school
nurse who visits Doherty High School. Thank you.
Latex Allergies
At Doherty HS, there are at least NINE students (whom we are aware of) who are ALLERGIC TO
LATEX. Most likely there are more students as well as staff who are allergic. It is possible they may
not even be aware of it yet. We are, therefore, enlisting our Doherty parents help. PLEASE do not send
latex balloons or balloon bouquets to school for your teen’s birthday, Valentine’s Day or other
occasion. If one of these balloons break, latex particles are emitted into the air and a person who has a
latex allergy could have a severe allergic reaction. This could be life-threatening. Please check before
ordering balloons that are to be delivered to school to assure that they are NOT LATEX. Thank you for
your help and concern for everyone in our Doherty community.

LETTER TO PARENTS CONCERNING FOOD ALLERGIES
Dear Parents/Guardians of School District 11 Students:
Food allergies can be life-threatening. It is important that schools, students, parents, and physicians work
together to help minimize risks for students with food allergies. District 11 has implemented a policy
(JLCDA, Response to Students with Food Allergies) and we wanted to inform you of this important
policy & anaphylaxis plan required by State law.
If your child has been prescribed medication for treatment of a food allergy or anaphylaxis, please contact
your child’s school to obtain a Medication Administration form and an Allergy & Anaphylaxis Plan form.
We strongly encourage you to return these completed forms and supply the school with the prescribed
medication needed for treatment of the student’s food allergies or anaphylaxis in a timely fashion.
Additional information related to food allergies and student’s special dietary needs can be found at
www.d11.org/FNS/Pages/SpecialDiets.aspx or available at any CSSD11 School Kitchen.
Please feel free to contact your school with questions or concerns related to your child’s diagnosed food
allergy or anaphylaxis plan.
**************************************************************************************

Revised – April – 2-10
INCLEMENT WEATHER PROCEDURE
The Superintendent will make inclement weather decisions based on concerns for Student, Parent
and Staff safety and in consultation with appropriate resources and authorities.
In the event school is canceled for a day or the decision is made to close early, the district shall cancel all
after school and evening meetings, activities, community classes, etc. In the event of an early release lunch
will be offered.
In the event school is started late, students are released early or school is cancelled for the day, parents/
guardians are expected to be responsible for the custody of their children. When schools are open
parents are expected to decide whether to send students to school on threatening, stormy days. Some
parents may choose to keep their children home due to bad weather. Such absences will be excused, and
work missed may be made up without penalty.
DISTRICT CLOSINGS, CANCELLATIONS, LATE STARTS AND EARLY RELEASES
District Eleven will:
 Collect data at the earliest appropriate time. The district will check with available resources and
geographically located staff members.
 Make a decision as to whether schools will be closed or started and announce the decision no later
than 5:30 a.m., unless there are extenuating circumstances, by calling the local media and other
forms of available communication
IN THE EVENT A DELAYED/SAFETY START OCCURS
In the event of late starts, schools that have breakfast programs may offer breakfast.
District Eleven will:
 Make the decision to delay school by 2 hours and announce that decision no later than 5:30 a.m.,
unless there are extenuating circumstances.
 Make the decision to cancel community education classes, rental activities and co-curriculum
activities by 1:00 p.m., unless there are extenuating circumstances. Begin school for all students,
except all pre-school activities, 2 hours later than each school’s normal arrival time. Contribute to the
safety of students and of the entire community by reducing the amount of pedestrian and vehicle
traffic during peak hours and under poor driving/walking conditions.
IN THE EVENT STUDENTS ARE RELEASED EARLY
District Eleven will:
 Inform the media listed and utilize other available forms of communication, not later than 11 a.m. that
schools will dismiss students early, unless there are extenuating circumstances.
 Dismiss students 2 hours earlier than normal, unless otherwise directed by the Superintendent or
designee. Schools will make every effort to complete lunch service before dismissal.
 Keep buildings open as long as necessary to evacuate all students safely.
 Cancel all p.m. preschool.
Parents are expected to:
 Listen for an early dismissal announcement not later than 11 a.m.
 Make sure their children know what to do and where to go if dismissed early.
 Know that students will be dismissed two hours earlier than normal.
 Not rely on the telephone to make last-minute arrangements for their children. (Lines tend to

FALL ACADEMIC AWARDS PROGRAM
The annual Fall Academic Awards Program for current sophomores, juniors and seniors will be held on
Thursday, October 17, 2013 at 7:00 p.m. in the auditorium. The purpose of the program is to recognize
students who have two consecutive semesters of 3.75 GPA at Doherty High School. Students who are
eligible for awards will be sent invitation letters mid-September.
TRANSCRIPT INFORMATION
Transcripts are a record of a student's cumulative grades, 9-12, and are used for many purposes. Official transcripts are
the responsibility of Mr. Jiron, the registrar. It is the policy of every high school in District #11 to charge $2.00 for
each transcript, both official and unofficial. At your request, we will send your final transcript free to the college of
your choice. PLEASE NOTE: The registrar’s telephone number is: 328-6406.
We have had an increasingly large number of transcript requests for various reasons other than college applications or
transfer to other schools. Many requests are for "official" transcripts for the student to pick up. If a transcript is given
to a student, a parent, or guardian, it MUST be marked "unofficial". Official copies are SENT ONLY to the school,
college, university or agency DIRECTLY FROM DOHERTY.
Insurance companies usually have their own forms for the school to fill out to verify "good student" discount
eligibility. Please supply the insurance forms to us rather than request a transcript each time the insurance is due.
Students who need transcripts for scholarship applications need to go through their counselor.
TEST FOR COLLEGE-BOUND JUNIORS
The PSAT/NMSQT (Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test) will be given at
Doherty on Wednesday, OCTOBER 16 starting at 8:00 a.m. for any high school junior. The test is not required, but is
recommended for students who plan to attend college. The cost of the test is $18.00 and checks should be made out to
Doherty High School. Students may register for the test in the counseling center with the counseling secretary
beginning October 02. Registrations are taken on a first come first serve basis, with Doherty 11th grade students
having priority. There are a limited number of spaces available so students should sign up early. The deadline for
registration is OCTOBER 14. The test is approximately 2 hours and 45 minutes.
Students take the PSAT/NSMQT for several reasons. The test is the qualifying exam for students wishing to
participate in competitions of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation and it also provides students with
information on how they rank among their peers taking the test in other parts of the country. Results of the test are
used to award scholarships and recognition from numerous colleges, corporations and foundations. The test provides
an opportunity to become familiar with the types of questions similar to those in the SAT test, which is taken by many
college-bound students take. Test takers receive recruitment mail from interested colleges informing them of program
and scholarship opportunities.
TEST FOR COLLEGE-BOUND SOPHOMORES
The PLAN (P-ACT+) test will be given at Doherty on Saturday, NOVEMBER 09 starting at 8:00 a.m. in the cafeteria. The test is intended for use with high school SOPHOMORES and has three primary purposes: 1) To help students initiate and sustain the process of making post secondary plans; 2) To help students identify and acquire the
academic and enabling skills they will need to make a successful transition to post secondary education or work; 3)
To help students effectively demonstrate their academic skills on the ACT admissions test. The academic tests in the
PLAN program reflect recent adjustments in the secondary school curriculum and the knowledge and skills judged to
be important for college bound students. The cost of the test is $18.00 and checks should be made out to Doherty
High School. Students may register for the test in the Counseling Center with the counseling secretary beginning

October 21. Registrations are taken on a first come first serve basis, with Doherty students having priority.
There are a limited number of spaces available so students should sign up early. The deadline for registration is
OCTOBER 31. The test is approximately 3 hours.
ASVAB TEST BEING GIVEN AT DOHERTY
The ASVAB Test will be given to students this fall, the test date is October 18. This test will be given to interested
students who sign-up for the test in the counseling center. Students should check with their counselor or listen to
announcements for information as it becomes available.
CENSUS CARDS
Federal Census Cards will be distributed at the end of October. Federal regulations state "The survey form shall be
filled out and signed by pupil's parent" (or guardian). Each student in a family must return a separate card. Please
return the signed card promptly.
COLLEGE PLANNING TIMELINE
It is never to early to start planning for college. Regardless of your goals beyond high school, the decisions you
make today will affect what opportunities are available to you later. Through careful selection of high school
classes you will be keeping your options open. A broad-based and rigorous education will not only prepare you
for college admission, but for life. The following timeline should help you with your plans.

Registration materials are also available in the
Counseling Center. Both ACT & SAT allow late registration & walk-ins for an additional fee. Seniors should
plan on completing all college admission testing by January 1. Most colleges & universities will accept scores
from either test. The highly selective colleges require
students to also submit SAT Subject scores, including the
University of California system. SAT Subject tests are
hour long tests which can’t be taken at the same time as
the SAT. Colleges usually require 2-3 scores with one
score being math, plus additional results from any of the
other 22 tests available. Some colleges will accept your
ACT scores in lieu of the SAT II tests.
PLEASE CHECK THE COUNSELING WEBSITE FOR MORE COLLEGE INFORMATION!
NCAA
Have you covered your bases? Hoop? Balance beam? Whatever the sport, if you’re planning on
Competing in college athletics at the Division I or Division II level, you need to register with the NCAA
Clearinghouse. The Clearinghouse will evaluate the student athlete's high school transcript + ACT/SAT
scores according to NCAA standards to determine a student’s eligibility to play in college. Students
should register online at:
https://web1.ncas.org/eligibilitycenter/common/index.html
Student athletes also need to make an appointment wi5th their Counselor to have their transcript evaluated
to insure the student’s senior schedule completes NCAA requirements.
