Art, culture, traditions, a huge historical heritage, a crystalline sea and charming villages, not
to mention the nature or typical food products and wine, this in brief is the Gargano, a land
of wonders which can offer, to those who visit, a considerable variety of choices.
Here the land and sea meet and merge, giving intense emotions that multiply in front of the
white cliffs alternating with coves with pebbles or golden sand, bordered on oneside by the
“macchia mediterranea” and on the other a crystal clear water, from which white rocks
emerge and then there are lively seaside villages dotted along the coast.
Along the coast between Peschici and Vieste, you'll see unusual wooden contraptions
suspended above the water. These are “trabucchi”, ancient structures once used for fishing
which have today been transformed into restaurants overlooking the sea.
The Tremiti Islands stand out on the horizon, 5 km² of marvels and a multi-hued seabed
offering unforgettable diving. From the green San Domino to San Nicola, and all the way to
Pianosa, the islands are a pristine marine nature reserve.
The Gargano has a lot of history. The journey from Manfredonia to Mattinata boasts plenty
of history and traditions, as you venture into the heart of villages adorned with majestic
cathedrals and small artisans' workshops.
In Gargano, sacred devotion sinks its roots deep into the places of Padre Pio in San Giovanni
Rotondo and the Sanctuary of San Michele in Monte Sant’Angelo, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site.
A multicoloured mosaic of colours, scents and curiosity, an incredible puzzle of lakes,
coasts, forests, valleys and wetlands, a protected area in the National Park of Gargano that,
with more than 120.000 hectares, due to its biodiversity and the innumerable habitats, is the
ideal destination for those looking for nature in its original state, like the Foresta Umbra that,
with an area of over 11.000 hectares, represents the residue of the primeval and millenarian
forest of the Gargano promontory.
The forest, wild-looking, almost inaccessible, where branches and trees interlacing
against the sky, is the favourite home of lots
of animals: peep owls, woodpeckers,
squirrels, wild boars, wild cats and
especially deer that have become one of the
symbols of the park.
The diversity of the world fauna, contrasts with vegetation that numbers more than 2.000
varieties, many of which are endemic and rare. Not surprisingly, in fact, the Gargano
promontory is the last paradise for wild orchids in Europe, with about 82 varieties, their
bloom is expected between February and September. It’s an explosion of colour that has
always rejoiced botanists and hikers.
There are numerous options to explore the park on foot or by bike, thanks to the activities
organized by the park's visitors centres, organizing bodies, and municipalities: itineraries
and thematic excursions dedicated to sport, nature, food and wine, history and religion.
In the Gargano Park nestling between the sea and the sky, in a kaleidoscope of colours, you
can find the “Wild Paradise” area, it covers about 380 hectares and is the only area in the
Gargano National Park classified as “building land” in the Vieste territory.
This area is bordered in the North by the “highway SS 89” (from Mattinata to Vieste) and is
set on the first hilly ridges at the back of the coast surrounded by a wood of about 6.000
hectares that extends to the “Foresta Umbra”.
“Wild Paradise” is in the heart of the
Gargano near Monte Sant’Angelo and San
Giovanni Rotondo, which are important
destinations for millions of pilgrims every
year. The Centre of Vieste is about 3 Kms
away and it’s connected by a direct road.
The “Wild Paradise” district, is about 300
metres, above sea level, which makes this
area unique for the panorama, nature and
climate.
The incomparable view, the nearness to the sea and the vegetation rich in woods and forest
lead the development of this area to a tourist vocation, not only for summer holidays, but
also for activities to be carried out in other seasons: religious tourism, hunting, horse riding.
It would be possible, here, to organize a lot of different tourist activities such as agritourism,
fun and sports activities (such golf, water parks and theme parks).
The Gargano and Vieste, in particular, are one of the most desirable destinations for national
and international tourism. The growing and varied tourist demand, the availability of such a
beautiful area, with vocation building and of sufficient size to allow the construction of a
tourist center which could have a significant impact on the tourist market, even
internationally, it would be natural to think about a tourism investment to be set up in the
residential area of Vieste, in particular in the area of “Wild Paradise”.
HOW TO GET TO VIESTE
Travel
by plane to Vieste
to reach Vieste in plane for the majority of passengers is advisable to make a stopover
airports of Bari, Pescara or alternatively to Rome. From Bari there are direct connections
with a service dedicated bus, more info on the site www.aeroportidipuglia.it. From Pescara
and Rome are available buses that arrive to Vieste, more info www.ferroviedelgargano.com.
Also from Foggia to reach Vieste is possible to use a service of helicopters, more info on the
site www.alidaunia.it.

Car in Vieste
From north: by car to reach Vieste from A-14 motorway Bologna/Taranto, you must exit at
Poggio Imperiale. It continues with the fast road of Gargano, going up to the term. After
following the directions you will reach the coastal road that leads to Peschici (SS89).
Arrived At Peschici you may choose to arrive at Vieste with the coast (P52) or with the
internal road (SS89), the distance is the same but the coast is the most frequented and
presents a landscape rich in beaches and bays, in addition to numerous campsites.
From Naples: For the one who originates from Naples to reach Vieste with the car you must
take the motorway A-16 Naples/Canosa di Puglia and exit at the candle. It continues with the
state road (SS655) that leads to Foggia. Joints in Foggia following the directions you can
reach the highway (SS89) in direction Manfredonia-Mattinata. From the morning you may
choose to arrive at Vieste with the coast (B53) or with the internal road (SS89). The distance
is the same but the internal road is less busy and presents a landscape rich in vegetation and
woods. On the contrary the coastal, very frequented, offers a splendid landscape rich in inlets
and natural bays.
From the south: coming from the A-14 Taranto/Bologna, to reach Vieste by car it is
advisable to take the output of Cerignola Est. It continues with the state road (SS159) in the
direction of Manfredonia. Joints in Manfredonia it continues with the state road (SS89) in the
direction of the morning. From here you can choose to reach Vieste with the coast (B53) or
with the internal road (SS89). The distance is the same but the internal road is less busy and
presents a landscape rich in vegetation and woods. On the contrary the coastal, very
frequented, offers a splendid landscape rich in inlets and natural bays.

bus to Vieste
bus to Vieste and the Gargano are different, for this reason there are many bus companies

train to Vieste
to reach Vieste by train you must make a turn very tortuous and complicated. For travellers
coming from the North (Milan, Bologna, Rimini), many trains, make stopover in San Severo
(FG) (alternatively there is the airport of Foggia). From here you can continue by bus to
Vieste. For travellers coming from other cities (Rome, Florence) it is advisable to make a
stopover at the train station of Foggia, where there are many buses that provide the service of
bus line Foggia - Vieste. (for info www.ferroviedelgargano.com and www.sitasudtrasporti.it).
1. INTRODUCTION
The idea of “Wild Paradise” was not created by chance, since it derives from the need to
create a peaceful oasis just a short distance from the sea, for a relaxing holiday, benefiting
from the special microclimate that this fantastic piece of land offers us.
The request to that effect, comes primarily from foreign tour operators; it is known, infact,
that their customers much prefer a tourist location in the hinterland to those of the sea which
are, generally hot and chaotic: an example is the presence on the italian riviera, Tuscany and
the Adriatic.
Another point in favour of the idea of “Wild Paradise”, is given by a lack of tourist
accommodation, compared to the demand. Currently, infact, we see that the town of Vieste
can accommodate just over 53.000 people, insufficient to meet the demand.
The creation of the Gargano National Park, has definitely precluded the possibility of
further expansion of tourist facilities. “Wild Paradise” is the only exception.
With these facts, the initiative in question is of particular importance and therefore can be
placed in a medium-high setting compared to the existing possibilities.
2. THE PROJECT
2.1 - Name of intervention: “WILD PARADISE”
2.2 - Target
Construction of a tourist-residential complex to be implemented in Vieste in the “Wild
Paradise” area consisting of traditional houses, residences, resorts, spa, hotels, shops, sports
centres to leisure (golf, swimming pools, gyms, specific sports facilities, cinemas, discos,
pubs, restaurants, etc.), offices, service centers and more, able to capture both the residential
demand and that of the tourist (national and international) in particular regarding uppermiddle the tourism market on the Adriatic coast.
2.3 - Site
The area “Wild Paradise” is located in the province of Foggia, in the Gargano National
Park. It is about 3 km from the town of Vieste and from the sea, which can be reached via a
main road (3.8 km).
“Wild Paradise” has easy accessibility to the center of Vieste, the harbour, as well as to the
recently finished marina which includes an increase of approximately 800 berths.
2.4 - Description of the district
The area “Wild Paradise” in the Gargano promontory extends for approximately 4 million
square meters, it's a verdant, nature reserve, with woody vegetation, which includes pine
trees, chestnut trees, firs, cedars, olive trees “macchia mediterranea”. It is situated at about
300 meters above sea level and offers a breathtaking panorama of the Adriatic sea.
The proximity to the sea and the simultaneous closeness to the “Umbra Forest” favours the
existence of a microclimate with climatic and environmental conditions conducive to the use
of tourist facilities for almost the entire year.
2.5. - Volumetric Plan of the Site
3. TECHNICAL DATA
The subdivision of “Wild Paradise”, already included as a “Residential-Tourist area D/2” in
the old building plan, has been reported in the current P.R.G. recently approved as “TL
Tourist-Residential Area”; this type of place was suggested by the Tourism Development
Plan of the area of the Gargano and Tremiti Islands.
The planning instrument in force in the town of Vieste is the Master Plan approved by
resolution of the CC No. 51 of 16 May 2000, and taking note of the Puglia region with
resolution G.R. N° 1242 of 3 October 2000.
The area of intervention, defined by convention planning and specific parameters, has spatial
index of 0.08 mc/mq and manufacturability land of 0.15 mc/sqm for residential volumes
with a maximum height of 5,60 meters and index 2 of unobstructed view, whereas 0.50
mc/sqm for hotel volumes with a maximum height of 9,50 meters and index 1 of
unobstructed view, all for a total volume of 475,000 cubic meters of ground of which only
15.000 has already been realized by the former owners.
The above convention for the safeguarding of existing environmental flora, provides: for the
residential type buildings, amalgamations for each unit not exceeding 20.000 cubic meters, it
also provides that the type of new volumes can be for residential-tourism and also for
tourism with management unitary, thus allowing changes to be made on volumes set in the
Convention, to achieve also buildings for public use (medical or recreational).
The project constitutes the natural development of what has already been approved as part of
the subdivision plan as shown in the convention planning intervened, notarial Ada Ruo June
30, 1976 between the Town of Vieste and the old owners.
The total volume of the proposed intervention, as mentioned above, provides approximately
475,000 cubic meters of which 460,000 new building, in compliance with the planning of
housing development already approved, are distributed over the entire area (3,8 million
square meters) in 6 sub-sectors including two hotel complexes (“Borgo Cupari” and
“Pagliaro Freddo”), more precisely:

The organization of these volumes has been suggested, in relation to the orography of the
sites, according to the following types:
o “In Line” type: online form consisting of homogeneous elements of 2 storeys with a
flat roof and trusses to protect the verandas.
o
“Terrace” type: module based on 2 floors, with a gable roof and contained planimetric
dimensions, to easily allow the grouping of volume and height.
o “Cupari” type: buildings of 2 floors with a combined cover, arranged in terraces that
follow the topography of the area.
o “Cottage” type: family detached cottages of 2 storeys with gable roof suitable orography
of the lots with a minimum surface area of not less than 3.000 square
meters.
o “Hotel” Type: Three floor buildings with a combined cover, arranged in terraces that
follow the topography of the land;
In the realization of all types of buildings the project includes the use of homogeneous
materials such as natural stone cladding with indigenous wood, terracotta tiles, wrought iron,
plaster with bright colours, each implementation will be integrated into the surrounding area
with appropriate interventions to replenish the surrounding flora and mitigate the visual
impact.
The realization of a commercial area dedicated to a seasonal outlet has been included in the
project as well as a large area, of about 80 hectares, destined to recreational activities
especially horse riding.
4. ACCOMMODATION
The Gargano, offers a wide choice of accommodation: hotels, resorts, residences, bed and
breakfasts, cottages and camp-sites that offer reasonable accommodation for everyone. It's
different for religious tourism. In this project we looked at accommodation facilities in the
major tourist areas of the Gargano: Cagnano Varano, Carpino, Ischitella, Lesina,
Manfredonia, Mattinata, Monte Sant'Angelo, Peschici, Poggio Imperiale, Rignano
Garganico, Rodi Garganico, San Giovanni Rotondo (religious tourism), San Marco in
Lamis, Sannicardo Garganico, the Tremiti Islands, Vico del Gargano and Vieste.
There is a predominance of Category III structures, which is also reported by ENIT as the
average category of Italian receptivity, but it's not always able to meet the standards
required by operators and international customers. 1
The tourist season in the Gargano, starts on average from 1st April and lasts until 31st
October. The season can then be divided into the following periods:
• Low Season:
From 1st April to 15th June
From 16th September to 31st October
Total of 122 days
• Mid Season:
From 16th June to 5th July
From 1st September to 15th September
Total of 35 days
• High Season:
From 6th July to 31st August
Total of 57 days
For a total period of 214 days
These dates are followed by the majority of locations mentioned, but some accommodation
units operate using different periods.

The town of Vieste is a tourist center of international level, highly frequented by Italian and
foreign tourists that choose it for its beauty, the clear sea, the golden beaches and the mild
climate, even out of season.
Vieste, according to the data processed by the A.P.T. Regione Puglia, with almost 2,000,000
registered overnight stays in the year 2015 is the most visited destination of Puglia,
followed by Marina di Ugento and nearby Peschici.
In July on average approximately 600,000 overnight stays are recorded that in the month of
August, increase up to almost 800,000.
In the month of June there are about 260,000 overnight stays and about 200,000 in the
month of September.
In the months of April, May and October there are about 90,000 overnight stays in total,
60% of which are foreigners, mostly from the CEE.
According to data compiled by the APT of Vieste, there are 58 hotels, 51 holiday villages,
70 residences, 142 hospitality centers (farm holiday inns, bed & breakfasts, camping sites,
holiday homes) for an overall supply of approximately 53,000 beds with daily costs ranging
from a minimum of € 30,00 to a maximum of € 300,00 per person.
5. MORE INFORMATION ABOUT THE GARGANO
5.1 - The Dishes of the Gargano
The Gargano has a great food and wine heritage, characterized by many types of “DOP”
products; they have peculiar characteristics that depend exclusively or essentially on the
territory where they are produced.
The geographical environment includes both natural factors (climate, environmental
characteristics) and human factors (production techniques handed down over time,
craftsmanship, savoir-faire), which, combined together, enables a unique product inimitable
out of a certain productive area.
For the same reason, Slow Food was also interested in the products of the Gargano and has
selected five of them: “caciocavallo” cheese, citrus fruits from the Gargano, eels from
Lesina, broad beans from Carpino and “Podolica” beef; infact, they have been included in
the Atlas of the typical products of the Italian Parks.
Authentic treasures of taste, for which “acts of adoption” have been formulated to protect
them against the risk of disappearance. This is one way, which allows us to rediscover and
enhance the products that the Gargano offers us.
Food that is part of the so-called and much appreciated “Mediterranean diet”, because it
manages to combine the delicious flavours to healthy eating habits.
Looking at a table laden with dishes and products of the Gargano is a pleasure that involves
all the senses. One is immediately fascinated by the variety of colours of fruits, vegetables,
cheeses and soups, fish and shellfish. The colours and aromas are enhanced by the constant
presence of parsley, basil, garlic, capers, oregano, wild rocket. The traditional cuisine of the
Gargano is often very simple.
Enjoy the dishes, taste the recipes and the combinations of food, made possible by the use of
ingredients of local production that continues to ensure the quality and authenticity of the
past.
When you walk around the streets there is a myriad of smells and flavours, locally produced
“scaldatelli”, the “paposce” of Vico del Gargano and fried “pettole”.
In restaurants, after having tasted “la bruschetta” made using bred from Monte Sant'Angelo,
local olive, oil, tomatoes, onion and oregano, you can taste the “pancotto” with rocket and
potatoes, the delicious broad beans and chicory, seafood soup or “tiella” with potatoes,
cheese and breadcrumbs.
You can choose local handmade pasta: “troccoli”, “cecatelli” and “orecchiette”, seasoned
with fresh tomatoes, fennel, rocket and potatoes or with “turnip greens”. Particularly special
are the pulse dishes, not to mention those of fish or meat ...
For those who are not yet satisfied, you can taste fish stew, sea bass or sea urchins, caught at
the Tremiti Islands, eels fron Lesina, black anchovies from Vieste or, if you prefer meat,
there is a large selection of dishes cooked with goat or “Podolica” cow.
At the end of lunch, a portion of cheese is always welcome, there is an enormous selection
of local cheeses from: mozzarella, buffalo milk cheese, “scamorza”, “ricotta”,
“caciocavallo” cheese, “cacioricotta”, which is exceptional on pasta too, “pecorino
canestrato” and many others.
A special mention belongs to sweets: Almonds “Atterrate”, “Ostia Chjene”, “Poperate”,
“Farrate”, “Mostaccioli”, “Taralli neri with vincotto”, “Taralluzze ngeleppète”,
“Cartellate” with cooked wine or honey, “Calzoncelli”, pies made with jams of oranges,
lemons and figs grown locally.
After all these “goodies”, a liquor will be recommended that can help digestion and, then,
you only have to choose between “Femminiello lemon” (IGP), a liquor made with olive tree
leaves, bay leaves, prickly pears or pomegranates.
Certainly any palate, even the most demanding, can remain satisfied!
5.2 - The municipalities of the Gargano:
VIESTE
Vieste is the easternmost town on the Gargano promontory, situated in the National Park,
halfway between Peschici and the wonderful coastline of Mattinata.
Vieste has a historical medieval centre, a charming maze of narrow alleyways with lots of
typical souvenir shops and craft shops and ancient houses. After you've explored this
ancient district, visit the Castle and the Cathedral, and then stroll down to Piazzetta Petrone,
a small square with a remarkable coastal view.
Known as the Pearl of Gargano, Vieste is charming with its silvery pink sand, limpid,
crystal clear waters, long beaches, cliffs and 26 grottoes. There is at the Malacological
Museum, which has more than 15 thousand shells from all over the world.
The coastline, a continuous series of inlets and coves, features must see beaches at
Vignanotica, Castello, San Lorenzo, the Bay of San Felice (with an “architello”, a natural
stone archway over the sea), and Punta Lunga. After an afternoon on the beach, the smell of
the sea also hangs over dinner at the trabucchi, traditional old fishing, structures now
charming restaurants over the Adriatic.
PESCHICI
Less than 15 km (9 miles) away from the beaches of Vieste, the beautiful town of Peschici
perches on a cliff overlooking the sea and one of Italy's most enchanting bays in the
Gargano National Park.
Forming the heart of Peschici is the majestic Norman Castle and Torre del Ponte (Bridge
Tower). This tower is the gateway to a magical stone maze of alleyways and stairways
carved into the hillside, with pebble paved streets and houses that slope down towards the
sea with their distinctive white façades.
This charming fishing town is full of history. Just outside the town, near Manacore, you'll
find a prehistoric cave, now an archaeological park, the Santa Maria di Càlena Abbey (one
of Italy's most ancient abbeys), and the Madonna di Loreto Sanctuary, which, according to a
legend, was built by a group of fishermen who had survived a shipwreck.
From the panoramic viewpoints in the historical centre, you can see the Aleppo pine trees
that hug the coastline, and the old stone sentry towers that overlook one of the region's
most beautiful stretches of coast. Towards Vieste, you can see the trabucchi.
VICO DEL GARGANO
Located in the heart of the Gargano National Park, about 6 km (3.5 miles) away from the
sea and 10 km (6 miles) away from the Umbra Forest, Vico is one of Italy's most beautiful
villages. The centre is dominated by a castle and by the massive dome of the Colleggiata
dell'Assunta. This ancient district, known as the Rione Civita, is a triumph of stone with its
chimneys, archways, capitals, stairways, and underground chambers carved out of the rock.
Wander through the narrow twisting alleys, explore the medieval quarters of Terra and
Casale, and the enchanting Palazzo della Bella with its refined silhouette. Vicolo del Bacio
(Kiss Alley) is a must for couples in love.
Outside the town, the wonders continue with the Necropolis, an important archaeological
site on the Mount Tabor plateau. The Umbra Forest, an immense spread of oak, beech and
yew trees and typical arbutus (fruit-bearing shrubs), is ideal for outdoor activities. You'll
find riding centres, trekking paths and a thick pine grove that leads down to the wonderful
seashore between San Menaio and Calenelle.
Don’t miss the evocative Festa di San Valentino (Saint Valentine Festival), held to celebrate
the town’s patron saint and Protector of citrus groves and lovers. During the festivities, a
traditional procession passes through the streets of Vico, accompanying a statue of the Saint
decorated with oranges and orange tree flowers.
RODI GARGANICO
The turquoise blue of the sea, the white washed houses and the orange citrus trees: these are
the colours of Rodi Garganico, a wonderful seaside village.
The castle, royal residence of the King Ferdinand of Aragon, overlooks the sea, with its
towers and the impressive surrounding walls. The historical centre, surrounded by keeps, is
a maze of winding streets, sloping steps, arches and small gardens, spell-binding
whitewashed houses with red rooves, built one on the other as a way to protect the town
from pirate attacks. Don’t miss the churches of San Nicola of Myra and San Pietro and the
Sanctuary of Madonna della Libera, before arriving at the belvedere, where the main
entrance gate used to be. From here, you can enjoy a breathless view, extending from the
the Capuccini Monks Convent to the coast.
Rodi is a destination not to miss, thanks to its extraordinary natural heritage: the coastline
surrounds the town, with the beaches of Ponente (West) and Levante (East), while in the
hinterland, the scents of citrus trees and the lush vegetation of the Umbra Forest, not far
away from here, enthrall and seduce all.
MATTINATA
Mattinata, situated on the Adriatic sits on two hillsides and is surrounded by olive groves
and forests. Famous for its cliffs and orchids, with some 83 species of splendid flower
growing in the area.
Mattinata, which comes from the ancient Roman city of Matinum, has a long history.
Testifying to this are the archaeological artefacts on show at the Civic Museum, and the
ruins of the Roman villas, necropolises and abbeys that lie along the archaeological trekking
routes that cross the countryside.
The Rione Junno, the ancient heart of Mattinata, retains traces of the town's earliest
dwellings. Known as “pagliai,” these were made out of rough-hewn stones wedged against
each other. In among the Rione's lanes, you'll find stone stairways and small squares, as
well as the Palazzo Barretta and the elegant Palazzo Mantuano, seat of the town hall and
library.
Following the coast towards Vieste, the Gargano reveals some of its most beautiful
shorelines. Highlights include the Bay of Vignanotica, with its pebbly beaches and caves
dug into the rocks, and the Bay of the Faraglioni, with its transparent waters and dunes
coated with vegetation.
MANFREDONIA
Manfredonia is located on the slopes of the Gargano, on the shore of the gulf. Manfred, king
of Sicily, abandoned the port of the old Siponto to found this town.
The beautiful Cathedral and the Swabian-Angevine fortress, dropping sheer into the sea, the
seat of the National Archaeological Museum, were also designed by Manfred.
The historical centre is characterised by a mixture of noble palaces and small houses made
of stone or tufa. The Palazzo Comunale (Town Hall) and the Church of San Domenico stand
out in piazza del Popolo, while the Church of San Francesco is a small gothic gem.
A few kilometres away from the town, on the Gulf of Manfredonia, there is the Salso Lake
WWF Oasis and the reserve Palude di Frattarolo (Frattarolo Marsh), truly natural paradises,
while the ancient Siponto is nowadays a lively seaside resort and the fascinating
archaeological Park of Manfredonia tells the story of the ancient village of Siponto, an
important Roman centre, which homes the ruins of the Early-Christian Basilica dedicated to
Santa Maria Maggiore.
Besides the ruins of the old village, the excavations have brought to light hypogea dating
back to the third century AD, an amphitheatre and some churches outside the town walls,
where there are the wonderful black and white polychrome mosaic floors.
Of great importance is the church of Santa Maria Maggiore, built around the 11th century,
with its dome which soars into the sky, it is one of the cornerstones of Romanesque
architecture in Puglia.
Not far away from here, is the Abbey of San Leonardo, built by the Templar Knights an
important stop-off along the pilgrims' Via Francigena of the South.
ISOLE TREMITI
The Tremiti Islands are in the Adriatic Sea, twelve nautical miles off the Gargano's
northern coast. A Marine Nature Reserve since 1989, the region’s only archipelago is made
up of San Domino, the most populated and tourist of the islands, the small isle of San
Nicola, the uninhabited Capraia, the islets of Cretaccio and La Vecchia, and, further out, the
island of Pianosa.
The island of San Nicola is the historical heart of the Tremiti Islands. It's dominated by the
fortified towers of San Nicola and the Abbey of Santa Maria a Mare, with its mosaic floor
and imposing walls. From the abbey’s elegant cloister, a panoramic trail circles the island
leading to several Greek tombs.
San Domino's lighthouse is the symbol of the archipelago’s largest island, which is covered
by forests of Aleppo pines. Along the coast, there are sea grottoes accessible only by boat.
Must sees include the Grotta del Bue Marino and Punta di Ponente, where you can see the
remains of a Roman ship from the 1st century B.C. or Cala degli Inglesi, where "The
Lombardo", a garibaldian steamship sunk 1864.
Capraia is just a short distance from San Domino. Uninhabited and wild, it is a paradise for
scuba divers, who can book breathtaking underwater excursions to discover the most
beautiful diving points in the Mediterranean, such as Punta Secca and Cala dei Turchi on
Capraia, Punta del Diavolo and the Grotta delle Rondinelle in San Domino.
MONTE SANT'ANGELO
Monte Sant’Angelo, located in the south of the Gargano promontory, overlooks the
Tavoliere plane on one side and the Gulf of Manfredonia on the other side.
The Sanctuary of San Michele is a UNESCO world heritage site you can see a precious
influence of Lombard art here in Italy. A rock-hewn staircase leads down to the Sacra
Grotta (Holy Cave), the mystic place where the Archangel made its appearance and is now
an important pilgrims’ destination.
In the "Junno" neighbourhood, the old part of the town, stroll through the narrow alleys, and
see the bakers make the traditional ostie ripiene, sweets filled with almonds and honey. The
history still echoes off the walls of the Norman castle, home of Frederik II, the Rotary tomb
and the complex of San Francesco, where there is the Museum of Popular Arts and
Traditions of the Gargano.
Can be found 8 km away from the town centre, amid dozens of rock-hewn hermitages The
ancient Santa Maria di Pulsano Abbey, perched on a spur overlooks the gulf, it is managed
by monks, who organize courses on iconography, and there is also a printing office.
Erected in the Romanesque style in 591 A.D., the church was built inside a natural cave.
Recently re-opened to the public after restoration works, the abbey is the stage for the
characteristic feast of September 8th, when a procession of pilgrims departing from Monte
Sant’Angelo, arrive at the complex on mules.
SAN MARCO IN LAMIS
The small village of San Marco in Lamis, is located amid the hills of the Gargano National
Park, in an area characterized by the karst phenomena of dolines and rocky caves.
The small village, which surrounds the Sanctuary of San Matteo, is imbued with medieval
atmosphere. San Marco is the only municipality in the Capitanata which is crossed by the
pilgrims' route Via Sacra Longobardorum (Holy Route) which, besides the convent, passes
also near the Sanctuary of Santa Maria di Stignano, surrounded by the green countryside but
only a few kilometres from the village.
The “mugnali”, traditional terraced houses, with large external stairs, balconies and
arches decorate the historical centre, called “La Padula”, where there are lots of craft shops
in which the art of processing gold has been handed down.
Don’t miss the procession of “fracchie”: a religious celebration on Good Friday to honour
the Madonna Addolorata, with an original procession with torches, lit in very large tree
trunks and filled with bundles of wood, carried on iron carts with people in fancy dress.
SAN GIOVANNI ROTONDO
San Giovanni Rotondo is located on the slopes of the Calvo Mountain, the highest summit
in the promontory, at an altitude of 600 metres.
The small town, in the heart of the Gargano National Park, is an important destination for
international religious tourism, thanks to the priest Padre Pio from Pietralcina, who lived
and worked here. The most important place of devotion is the crypt of the Santa Maria delle
Grazie Convent, which contains his relics and is a pilgrims’ destination, nowadays part of
the new complex planned by Renzo Piano.
The town walls, built at the behest of Frederik II and embellished by the cylindrical tower,
nowadays the Museum of Popular Arts, surround the historical centre, dotted with places of
worship such as the Church of Sant’Orsola and that of Sant’Onofrio and the Chapel of the
Madonna di Loreto.
In the town centre, it is possible to catch sight of the churches of San Giuseppe artigiano, of
San Nicola and that of Santa Caterina. Rich in history is the Church of San Giovanni
Battista, also called “della Rotonda”, which was built on the ruins of a really ancient
Roman circular temple dedicated to God Janus and from which the town gets its name.
