LETTER FROM THE MINISTRY TEAM
The bishop of Wakefield married us in Wakefield Cathedral on 21st July 1956.By
then, I had moved to Garretts Green, Birmingham, to what the Bishop of Birmingham
called "circles without centres"; huge city housing estates built on what pre-war had
been countless fields, but with no church. To do this I had turned down offers of two
other benefices, one in the Coventry and one in the Wakefield Diocese, where I had
worked for my first six years in charge of a small wooden mission church.
Birmingham City Council would not reserve a house for a vicar, maintaining that if
they did, they would have to do so for every denomination. Consequently, a pre-war
semi was bought for us by the Birmingham Diocese, in Yardley, a mile from the
parish. It cost £2,000 and was sold in 1961 for the same price, when we moved into
the newly built vicarage. The city council did reserve a large piece of land, big
enough for a church, a hall, a vicarage and a car park.
We turned the front room of our Yardley house into a shrine for worship. Holy
communion was celebrated every morning, and at Christmas midnight mass the
congregation spilled out into the rest of the house, with people seated in pairs from
the top to the bottom of the stairs. I baptized babies in a Pyrex dish, and we sent the
people home after a cup of tea (there were far fewer cars then!).
For Sunday worship, we hired a community centre for communion. It was no joke
cycling over a mile holding a heavy bag of equipment (no car then!) with my cassock
tucked up into my belt (still the same one!). A school hall was used for Sunday
school, Sunday evensong and a Monday youth club; of the 12,000 population more
than half were 21! On weekdays, I conducted evensong in the bungalows of old age
pensioners (that continued after the church was built).
All this lasted for 4 years. In the first year there was no activity on the site. People
wondered if they would ever get a church. What is the message from all this? It is
that you can take part in worship anywhere. You may long for a church building, but
basically you don't have to have a specific place, however beautiful and conducive
to spiritual response.
The new St. Thomas' replaced St. Thomas' in the city centre, destroyed in the blitz.
The war damage people would offer compensation for only one building if one had
been destroyed, so the new church and hall had to be joined by a corridor. At
£6,000, the total cost was at that time the most expensive church plant in the
Birmingham Diocese. Five hundred attended the dedication on St. Lamberts Day
(Saturday September 17th 1960).
After the dedication, our son Thomas Richard was christened by the Bishop
Suffragan of Aston. Next day, I baptized 32 children, and at the church's first
confirmation there were 60 candidates - all from Garretts Green.
I worked for 14 years in Birmingham. I have been here for 15. The only other
similarity is the unusual distance from home to church!

KITCHEN CHAT WITH JANICE
Back to baking again!
We've just had a much-needed holiday which comprised a mixture of
cruising, golf and cookery.
The cruising bit included a tour round five Tapas bars in Cartagena which
tested the stamina of all concerned! During our visit to Valencia we
sampled the Iberico ham which was washed down with freshly squeezed
apple juice. Perfect - and sitting out in the sun made it taste even better.
P & O's new ship, Britannia, has a cookery school on board and we
managed to fit in classes on Macaroons; Portuguese Street Food; Thai
Street Food and Bread making. Piping Macaroons while bobbing about
on the ocean can be a challenge but all part of the fun!
We made a sweet bread which can be baked whole or divided into 4
biggish buns.
Honey, Hazelnut and Raisin Bread
100g whole-wheat flour
50g raisins, soaked in boiling water
100g plain flour
2 tbsps. hazelnuts,
1 tsp. bicarbonate of soda
roasted and roughly chopped
2 tbsp. honey
1/2 tsp. salt
50g butter, melted
150ml buttermilk
Pre-heat the oven to Gas5/190 deg C.
Sieve the flours and the bicarbonate of soda into a bowl. Stir in the salt,
raisins, and hazelnuts. Add the melted butter, honey and enough
buttermilk to make a soft but not sticky dough.
Shape into a large loaf or 4 buns on a lightly floured baking sheet. Bake
for 15 - 20 minutes for the buns or 25 - 30 minutes for loaves or until they
sound hollow when tapped. Cool on a wire rack.
Best eaten with lots of butter!

At the Meeting held on 24 September 2015.

Matters discussed included:Suggestion Box – anonymous suggestion left asking that the Parish
Council provide a detailed map of all areas of village green to all villagers
and inform everyone that any damage to village greens must be rectified.
It was agreed to put a notice on the notice board stating that plans are
available from the Clerk on request.
Stencils – Allerdale Borough Council informed the parish council that the
dog fouling stencils would be reapplied shortly.
Rubbish Crossrigg Barn – Allerdale Planning to contact the parish
council after discussions with the landowner regarding the rubbish and
tree cuttings at the site.
Phone Box – It was noted that the telephone equipment from the village
phone box would be removed in due course and a defibrillator possibly
installed there by the Community Heartbeat Trust subject to the Parish
Council awaiting further information. Paramedic training to take place for
volunteers in the future.
Finance – Cheque issued to Countrywide Grounds Maintenance for
£1,293.
Proposed Solar Farm - New Energy for the World
(GmbH) www.ne4tw.de attending next meeting on the 26th November
regarding proposed solar farm. One of letter of objection received so far.

Arthritis Support Group Oct. 2015.
Margaret Armstrong welcomed 14 members to Loveday House for the
October meeting of the Arthritis Support Group. Apologies were received
from Lilian Gordon, Catherine Cheetham and Heather Hadley. Eunice
Hamblin was welcomed as a new member.
Margaret introduced Adrienne Harrison-Cottrell to speak on ‘Nutrition for
Pain Management’ everyone receiving a folder of helpful notes. Adrie told
us of the various qualifications she had gained over 20 years of studying
Holistic methods. She then assured us that it is never too late to try
various methods of pain management as the body will respond whatever
age we begin. She gave us a list of foods that can cause weight gain or
promote weight loss as what we eat affects our immune system and we
can reset our immune system in 14 days if we are careful which foods we
eat. Everyone is different so what one person enjoys eating others might
not so it is up to you to choose from the lists what to eat but all must avoid
the same foods. It was a really interesting talk and there were lots of
questions asked which Adrie answered with great patience. One thing
she emphasised was that it was better to choose some unpasteurised
foods as pasteurising kills the effectiveness of some items but drink lots
of clear water and never use fizzy drinks. Margaret thanked Adrie for a
really interesting afternoon and she answered more questions while
Pauline and Glynis served the refreshments. Margaret won the raffle then
our use of Loveday House was discussed. It is a lovely venue but we felt
it would be easier to meet at West Road Bowling Club so a letter of
thanks would be sent to the Manager of Loveday House but the next
meeting on 6th November will be at the Bowling Club when the speaker
will be Leo Holden and there will be plenty of room for visitors to join us.

Confirmation
A service of Confirmation will take place in Holme Cultram Abbey on
Sunday 1st November at 10am with Bishop James Newcome, Bishop of
Carlisle. This will be a united service for the Team. Please pray for those
being prepared for Confirmation – Jack, Megan, Sophie, Holly & Ella.
What is discipleship?
Bishop James will be focussing on “What is discipleship?” at this year’s
Bishop’s Teaching days under the headings ‘Calling’, ‘Commitment’ and
‘Cost’. The day lasts from 9am to 2pm and attendance is free though a
donation towards the cost of coffee is suggested. The Teaching days are
open to anyone. November dates include St James’, Carlisle on 21st Nov
or St Michael’s, Workington on 28th Nov.

God for All Deanery Evenings
A series of special God for All Deanery evenings is to be held across the
Diocese of Carlisle in the coming months.
The God for All banner draws together strategies for buildings, outreach
and ministry and represents a commitment from the Methodist, Anglican
and United Reformed churches in Cumbria to put mission at the heart of
what we do.
The aim is for every person in Cumbria to have a chance to explore the
reality of God and God’s purpose for their lives.
Bishop James and Bishop Robert will lead ten events across the county,
in a series of face-to-face meetings, bringing people up to date with latest
developments as well as listening to comments, ideas hopes and
concerns.
There is a local event taking place in All Soul’s Netherton on Wednesday
2nd December from 7.30-9.15pm. There is a special invitation to Clergy,
Churchwardens & PCC members, but everyone is welcome. Please take
up this opportunity to come along and hear about God for All.

Harvest
The harvest Festival was held in Christ Church and the congregation
were not eager to leave after the service. “Just imagine if there was a
kitchen/meeting place here....we’d never get shot of them!” Duncan joked
to Tim (who was presiding). The kitchen/meeting area has been sent to
the Diocesan Advisory Committee for preliminary advice prior to an
application (in December). The aim is to provide refreshments for all
coming to the church and a space for them to talk to each other, face to
face, either before or after facing God in a service. If the DAC are in
agreement, the PCC will be placing an application (for all the reordering
from creating the meeting area/kitchen space which is Phase one, to
removing the pews as required which is phase five). Those of us who
want to see this church be useful as a place of Christian presence in this
area, can only hope and pray that we live long enough to see it happen,
since there has been precious little progress here in the last eighteen
months and we may have gone backwards.

The president, Lesley Evans, welcomed fourteen members to the October
meeting.
Lesley introduced Joyce Cereri from ‘Fun 2 Do’ who came along with a
wide array of materials to give us crafting ideas for Christmas. It put us in
the mood for the festive season as she showed us great ideas for making
advent calendars, Christmas stockings and wall hangings. We were also
tempted into card making and using the tinsel flecked yarns. She was
assisted by her friend Avril. They were thanked by Lesley
After a cup of tea the business part of the meeting got underway.
An invitation was read out from Crosby and District W.I. inviting us to their
Christmas party.
Lesley informed members that progress was being made with the
programme for next year.
Members were reminded of our Christmas meal at Denton House on
Tuesday 8th December. A menu was circulated.
The competition for flower of the month was won by Jean Bennett. Phyllis
Dockeray came second.

Matters discussed included:
Planning: Applications received:
Appeal Ref: APP/G0908/W/15/3019484 - Dundraw Farm - Appeal against
refusal to grant planning permission for the application – Installation of a
500kW wind turbine (67m to blade tip) and its associated infrastructure
(crane pad, access track and meter house).
2/2015/0452 – Longburn Farm - Demolition of storage barn and erection
of two storey wrap around extension.
Decisions:
2/2015/0283 – Old Mission Hall, Dundraw - Change of use from hall to
dwelling with the erection of a garage, new access and agricultural land
into domestic curtilage - FULL PLANS APPROVED.
2/2015/0452 – Longburn Farm - Demolition of storage barn and erection

Internal Drainage Board: The NFU had circulated the ‘Justification
Statement’ that sets out the detailed business case for a new Internal
Drainage Board. The preferred option would cost £4.75 per acre per year
paid by the land occupier.
National Grid North West Coast Connections:
Community Information Events will be held over the next seven weeks for
people to find out more about the proposals for the NWCC project.
Parish Council Vacancies: Mr. Graham Franks and Mrs. Carole Storey
were duly co-opted onto the Parish Council.

Abbeytown MU Sept. 2015.
The September Meeting of the Abbeytown MU took the form of an
open meeting to which everyone was invited and Elaine Atkinson
introduced the Cockermouth Ukalalie Band. There was a good turnout
and a lovely variety of tunes many of which the audience sang to.
Everyone then enjoyed a delicious supper followed by a raffle the winners
being Jean Armstrong, Pat Holliday, Gladys Temple, Margaret Moore,
Margaret Gavican, Barbara Hurst and Brenda Purdham. Brenda Sim
thanked everyone for coming and the band for a great concert.

Abbeytown Indoor Bowling Club 2015.
FANCY TRYING SOMETHING DIFFERENT THIS WINTER?
Well, short mat indoor bowling starts on Monday 5th October at
Abbeytown Village Hall and runs throughout the winter until the end of
March. Eight to ten friendly fixtures against local clubs adds to the variety
and enjoyment. We meet almost every Monday from 7pm to 9.30pm with
a break for refreshments.
Even if you have never bowled before, teenager to senior citizen, come
along and have a go! We have club equipment so there is no expense for
you. We'd love to see you and are sure you would have a great time. It
certainly beats sitting in front of the telly!

To mark the occasion of the Queen being the longest serving monarch
the President, Margaret Durham asked the members and visitors to stand
and sing The National Anthem in respect to Her Majesty. Everyone gave
it their best effort and was praised by Margaret for their wonderful singing.
The theme for the evening was 'Poems and Rhymes' and Margaret
introduced our speaker for the evening, Pauline Mole, who was known to
most of us.
She began by introducing herself and her poetry in rhyme, and then
began by entertaining us with various poems. Many of these were in the
local dialect and were both beautifully written and extremely funny. One in
particular was about sheep wandering in the road with car drivers having
to be on their toes so that they didn’t hit them - it caused a great deal of
laughter. One that was particularly poignant was about her parents which
we all could relate to. It was a wonderfully entertaining evening - and
Pauline if you read this - you need not have been nervous, we loved you.
A vote of thanks was given by Jean Graham which she made in rhyme to
everyone’s delight.
The Competition winners for a 4 line poem 'Living by the Solway' were;
1st Val Lodge & 2nd Frances Jackson. The flower competition was won
by Frances Jackson and 2nd was Mona Kent The wild flower competition
winner was Pat Froggatt. Molly Lomas won the raffle and Susan Kenny
was second.
After the break the Minutes of the previous meeting were read and the
general business followed. The next meeting will be held on Wednesday
14th October and will be a talk about 'The Jacobite Rebellions of 1715 &
1745 & Bonnie Prince Charlie. The meeting will be held at Trinity
Methodist on Solway Street.

Waver Wine Circle
After our summer break - yes folk the rules do allow for no meeting in
August - at our September meeting we had our Red Wine Tasting
Competition. This was won by our newest member Judith Wood.
Congratulations Judith!
Following this the 'full house' of eleven members related outstanding and
memorable events in their lives, including family history, jokes suitable for
mixed company and pet hates etc.
The draw prize this month was donated by Janet Stukins and won by
Stella Graham, our Treasurer. After the usual 'craic' the evening drew to a
close at 9.45pm.
Our next meeting will be held, as usual, in the small hall at Blencogo
Village Hall at 7.30pm on Wednesday 14 October. We will be having a
quiz evening set by our regular quiz setters Janet and Graham Stukins.

Summary of the meeting held on Thursday the 24th September 2015.
Present: Cllrs. J Stockdale, M Underwood, I Brough, J Brough, J Lee,
N Sidaway & B Sharp. E Clark (Clerk) & J Lister (AB & CCC)
An emailed report from PCSO Crome of Cumbria Constabulary stated
that there had been two incidents reported to police for the area of
Bromfield. An overview of one of these incidents was; on the 14th of
August it was reported that two horse carts were stolen from the
Blencogo area. It is believed that this crime took place between the 10th
and 14th of August 2015. One cart is described as being wooden, green
and yellow in colour. The other cart is described as being metal and
green in colour. Police investigations have been conducted. Any
witnesses or persons with further information regarding this incident
should please contact police on 101.

Information from Allerdale Borough Council, stated that a contractor had
been given a list of the areas in the parish that currently didn’t have the
full recycling service (paper/cardboard, garden waste & purple bags for
plastic, glass and cans). Langrigg just needed purple sacks added to the
service. The contractor had been asked if they can expand the recycling
collections to include the areas and to advise if it would be through the
kerbside collection or communal collection points. Scales, Bromfield &
Langrigg can receive the full service but it will take a month or so to get
everything in place and deliver the bins, bags and information leaflets.
Other items discussed included highway matters, community right to buy
& various correspondence items.

GOOD NEWS!!
The voting papers sent out to all households in the parish concerning the
possibility of closing the church were counted, and over a third of you said
you would not like this to happen. The Archdeacon was astounded at the
support for our church. In light of this, here is a list of jobs that have to be
done within the church. If you could do just a part of one it would be a
great help. Especially as many tasks are presently being done by older
members of our community. Also we do run a gift aid scheme, so if you
are a tax payer, and fill in a form, we can claim 25% back on anything you
give. Donations can be via the yellow envelopes, the white envelopes in
church or directly into the church account.
