FRIENDLY neighbours on a close-knit street make a returnveranda villa in Wayville more than a stunning house. They make it an inviting family home. Vendor Fran Hannan has lived there for 30 years, bringing up a family along the way, but now she and partner Ron Male are moving to Tanunda. ‘‘It’s a lovely precinct, the neighbours are lovely,’’ Ms Hannan says. ‘‘We’ve had street parties and now have a group that come in at Christmas time, and we always welcome in new neighbours.’’ The classic villa with a traditional bay window and wide tessellated-tile veranda is situated just off King William Rd and is walking distance to the city. ‘‘We walk to King William Rd, we walk into the city on Sunday, go to the Central Market on a Saturday for breakfast,’’ Ms Hannan says. The original architecture has been carefully maintained at the front of the house while a recent addition at the rear provides modern living space. ‘‘Basically the renovation involved tearing down the old lean-to, putting in a new bathroom, laundry and kitchen and open-plan family and meals,’’ Ms Hannan says. ‘‘The extension made life really lovely to live there and we still have the formal lounge and dining at the front.’’ The kitchen overlooks the spacious, open-plan family room with two sets of french doors that open to the patio and 23/10/10 R-42 STATE 23/10/10 R-42 STATE A very well with the harsh environment,’’ Mr Hickinbotham says. There are three bedrooms, including a master bedroom with a walk-in wardrobe and ensuite. The other two bedrooms have built-in wardrobes and share a full bathroom with a sauna. The cellar is a feature of the home, accommodating up to 2000 bottles and has room for dining and entertaining. The property also features a small boutique winery producing quality wines. The Clarendon Vineyard and Winery was established by Alan and David Hickinbotham in the early 1970s and has produced fruit for some of the world’s most acclaimed wines, including Penfolds Grange, Hardys Eileen Hardy and the Clarendon label. The property, which spans five titles, is being sold as a whole but separate sale of the homes may be considered. 2 Address: 12 Trevelyan St. Land size: 1022sq m. FRENCH chateau-style homestead and an underground ‘‘earth shelter’’ house form a family property for sale as part of the Clarendon Vineyards Estate. The 184ha estate, owned by the family of late property tycoon Alan Hickinbotham, includes these two houses, each designed by a prominent architect, an 83ha vineyard and substantial pockets of rural land. Family spokesman David Hickinbotham says the estate is being placed on the market following the death earlier this year of his father. ‘‘As a family, we have decided to pass on our legacy to an individual or organisation with the drive to continue the vineyard’s outstanding success," he says. Perfectly at home surrounded by vineyards is a 740sq m stately stone mansion, reminiscent of a French chateau, designed by Adelaide architect Rob Cheesman. ‘‘Mum and Dad built that in the early ’90s and lived in it for a while so it became the family home,’’ Mr Hickinbotham says. The light-filled entry lobby lives up to the grand expectations created by the house’s presence. On the ground floor are formal and informal living spaces, including the ‘‘great room", which incorporates the family, dining and kitchen. A library, study, powder room, large underground cellar and laundry complete the downstairs facilities. Upstairs there are five bedrooms, several with raked ceilings, two full bathrooms and two separate living spaces. She says that while formal living rooms are not necessarily in vogue, they can be easily converted into bedrooms or a study if required. ‘‘There are french doors in the dining room that open to the front veranda so you could have office at the front with independent access.’’ PUB: ADVERTISER PUB: ADVERTISER Chateau living amid vineyards WAYVILLE Advice Centre Chateau lifestyle: Outside and inside views of the 184ha estate’s French chateau-style homestead. 42 The Advertiser realestate.com.au, Saturday, October 23, 2010 Pictures: CALUM ROBERTSON For the hottest real estate tips, check out AdelaideNow’s new Advice Centre adelaidenow.com.au/advicecentre The Advertiser realestate.com.au, Saturday, October 23, 2010 47
