This is a group of young people who use agriculture to learn leadership, speaking and communication skills, teamwork, responsibility, along with animal science techniques. While the group is based in agriculture, there are many activities to get involved with that do not require working with animals or agriculture in the traditional sense. In the fall, FFA members compete in leadership development events such as skills demonstrations, agricultural issues forums, parliamentary procedure, public relations, job interviews, and many other speaking type events. Also in the fall the National FFA Convention is held and over the last few years we have had several members qualify for National events. Most animal projects are also started in the fall months. As we get to spring time, FFA members start to prepare for career development events. These include: livestock evaluation, equine evaluation, wildlife management, poultry evaluation, dairy products identification, dairy cattle evaluation, sales and service, and several more speaking events such as prepared public and extemporaneous speaking. During the spring semester FFA members travel to many locations throughout the state for competitions. January through March also brings several stock shows for animal project competition. Each year SCUCISD FFA members bring home thousands of dollars in prize money from these shows. As the end of school comes FFA members can begin work on Agriscience Fair Projects for competition at the State Convention held each summer. Students can compete in several categories of scientific research for the opportunity to win scholarships and qualify for national competition. In the last few summers our FFA members have won several state and national honors in Agriscience Fair competition. Through the years agricultural education has changed from training young men for a career in farming to a dynamic, progressive way to teach all students the value of leadership and teamwork to achieve success. Agriculture is THE MOST important industry in the world – without our ability to feed our people, the United States would not be the world power it is. While very few young people will ever grow up to be farmers and ranchers, there are many career opportunities available to them that fit into the agriculture category. It is our sincere hope that your student will take full advantage of the unbelievable activities available through these courses and the FFA organization. 2014-2015 YEAR IN REVIEW 15 students qualified for state competition 185 FFA and Junior FFA members Over 600 students participated in classroom instruction. 54 students participated in Fall Leadership Development Events (LDE). 2 district Championship in Fall LDE. 35 students participated in Spring Career Development Events (CDE). 8 district Championship in Spring CDE. 3 Career Development Event Teams qualify for State 80 members participated in local and major stock shows, winning over $112,000. 6 Livestock projects placed at major livestock shows earning over $25,000 Over $4250.00 awarded in scholarships at FFA banquet by the Cibolo Creek FFA Alumni Chapter. This handbook will answer many questions that concern the coming year. There will be additions to this handbook during the year as the need arises. Remember that FFA is an extracurricular activity and we strongly encourage you to focus on your grades, STAAR, and attendance! Please keep this book and refer as needed. Parents: We are well aware that many of you are not quite sure what to expect from the Agriculture Science Program. This booklet was prepared to answer as many questions as possible for the student and parent. We feel the Agriculture Science Program is one of the best programs offered today. We offer not only classroom work, but practical experience as well. We teach leadership, cooperation and responsibility. These traits are all important for our young people to learn and practice. Therefore, we ask for your help and cooperation in the coming year. Let’s all work together and learn together. FFA GENERAL RULES 1. Each student enrolled in Agriculture Science classes is encouraged to join the National FFA organization (FFA). Dues of $25 per year must be paid by September 27th . Those students who do not join FFA are not eligible to participate in any FFA activity, judging contest, livestock shows or scholarship consideration. 2. All members are encouraged to attend all FFA meetings and activities. Failure to attend at least 80% of all meetings can result in loss of membership for the student. Parents are also encouraged to join and participate in FFA Alumni activities. 3. Scheduling of meetings and workdays will be determined at the beginning of each school year. There is a calendar of events in this handbook. This is done to avoid conflicts. However, other work days may come up if needed. 4. Students with repeated discipline issues will be dismissed from the Cibolo Creek FFA organization according to district policy. Repeated discipline issues is defined as: Any suspension from school DAEP Placement Three assignments to ISS The Ag Teacher reserves the right to create a behavior contract with any student who exhibits repeated discipline issues. 5. Project record books will be kept by every student in the high school program. These books are a FFA requirement and failure to complete the book could result in poor class performance. 6. Chain of Command: All questions and concerns for the FFA program should first be addressed with the FFA advisor of that activity. If that does not satisfy your needs the following chain of command must be followed. Step 1: Meeting with FFA Advisor of that activity Step 2: Meeting with all teachers and vice principal Step 3: Meeting with all teachers and campus Principal Step 5: Referral of matter to Central Office If the chain of command is not followed it could result in removal from the organization. 7. School dress code will be followed at all FFA functions including but not limited to FFA meetings and stock shows. Students not in dress code, will not participate in FFA activities. 8. The school district reserves the right to ban any individual from the Toby Connor Complex at any time to protect the integrity of the organization and safety of its students and employees. LIVESTOCK PROJECT INFORMATION Students enrolled in the Agriculture Science Program are eligible to participate in the 1ivestock project program. Students may purchase animal projects to care for during the school year and exhibit those animals at stock shows. Students may keep the projects at the Toby Connor Complex (our school farm located in Cibolo) or in special cases the animal can be kept at home. These projects allow students to take on responsibility while having the opportunity to practice the skills learned in class and maybe even earn a little money. Animal projects are NOT MANDATORY so the following questions should be considered when determining if a student will participate in the animal project part of the program: 1. Can the student and/or parent afford the project? 2. Where will the project be kept? 3. Transportation to feed and care for the animal. 4. Transportation of the animal if needed 5. Time involved 6. Risk of losing money 7. Commitment of the student and parents to the project. Please keep in mind these projects are a gamble and they can become a total loss. Animals can be hurt, die or become sick and not recover. The risk can be reduced by hard work and desire to learn and apply your knowledge. The supervised animal project can be a dreadful problem or the greatest learning experience. It is only what you make of it!! At times it may be necessary to perform surgical procedures on livestock. Whenever possible, a veterinarian will be used to perform the procedures. However, regardless of who does the procedure, the student and parent must realize there is always a possibility for complications. The owner must accept all costs, and risk of illness or death of the livestock. PURCHASING PROJECTS AND EXPENSES 1. Animals kept at the school farm are raised for market purposes – this means all animals will eventually be removed and sold for food. The Toby Connor Complex is not a permanent home for animals. All breeding projects are for exhibition purposes only. All breeding animal projects must be removed prior to parturition and must be removed after show term Heifers are reserved for scramble certificates or upper classmen (Juniors or seniors in high school). Steers have priority of cattle pens. 2. Family domestic animals do not meet the required project criteria. 3. The types of projects are as follows: Cattle (on feed by June 1) Sheep (Aug. 26) Goats (Aug. 26) Swine (Sept. 16) Chickens (Sept. 9) Turkeys (May 1) Rabbits (Sept. 9) 4. The selection and purchase of an animal project is a cooperative effort involving the student, parent and teacher. The agriculture teacher’s role is to help you find the best animal possible in the price range set. The teacher will not dictate what to buy, how much to spend or where to purchase from. 5. The purchase of projects should be coordinated with the teacher BEFORE projects are selected and purchased. Any animal bought without the teacher’s approval will not be allowed to be kept at the Toby Connor Complex. 6. Before any animal is brought into the Toby Connor Complex, it must be examined by the AST in charge of the specie. 7. The student and parent are responsible for the payment of feed, the animal, the SAE Fees, entries, validations and any other costs associated with the project. The animal project must be paid for prior to the advisor purchasing the project. Final payments for all fees (other than the cost of the animal) are due at the November FFA meeting. Failure to comply will result in removal of the animal from the complex. 8. Projects purchased must meet the requirements of the show intended. The teacher will assist in providing the necessary information regarding the care and grooming of projects for each show. 9. In the event a check is returned for non- sufficient funds, only cash or cashiers check will be accepted for project payment. This applies to all FFA activities (ex. Fundraisers, entries, etc). This will continue from year to year. If a member fails to clean his/her pen within 7 days of the animal’s removal, they will be fined an additional SAE fee (see chart above). This fine must be paid before a student will receive any premium checks. Students who fail to pay the fine will be added to the obligation list at their respective school. 9. Students will be invoiced from the FFA chapter for expenses incurred for their livestock project during the feeding period. Invoices will be issued periodically and it is expected to be reconciled within thirty days from the invoice date. The agriculture teacher does reserve the right to increase the prices should an unforeseen circumstance arise. Due to limited space, teachers have the right to limit the number of animals at the barn. If this should occur, students allowed to raise will be determined by a set of criteria including grade level, experience raising said specie, and/or based on a lottery system. However, the teacher will make every effort to assist when needed with those problems. 2. The teacher will visit all projects in accordance with Texas Education Agency guidelines. 3. Selecting the feeding programs for each animal project area. All animals in an area at the complex should be fed the recommended feed. Feeding instructions for animals raised at the barn are to come from AST teachers only. Any outside instruction will lead to dismissal from the barn. We require this so that we know what the animals are being fed and what adjustments we need to make. All feed is purchased by the students as directed by the teacher. 4. Livestock show participation is not a requirement of the program, therefore it cannot be guaranteed that teacher supervision will be available at every show. Every effort will be made for the teacher to attend all shows where 5 or more students are exhibiting one specie. 5. The teacher will assist in giving medications when possible. The teacher will NOT be held liable for injury to livestock while assisting the student with their project. This includes giving medications, castration, dehorning, docking, worming, trimming or any other activity directly involving the teacher and animals. 6. The teacher will provide transportation for all animals raised at the complex to shows entered by the chapter where there are more than five entries and provided there is adequate trailer space. 7. Junior members must provide proof of eligibility in order to receive out of class activity forms. 4. Students whose projects are not ready or are not of sufficient quality to participate in a show will not be allowed to show. This decision will be made by the teacher. 4. A list of eligible students will be prepared by the ASTs to authorize attendance at the show. Any student that attends on an unassigned day or without proper district permission will be reported truant to district administration. 5. The parents and student will make arrangements with the teacher for supervision at major shows. 6. Students and parents are responsible for transportation, lodging, and costs at all stock shows. 7. School policies will be enforced and discipline will be according to school policies. 8. Students who fail to follow rules at shows or contests will be removed from the eligibility list and barred from future participation. 9. School dress code will be enforced at all times. 10. ALL projects at the complex will be required to show in the chapter show with the exception of poultry and rabbits. CODE OF ETHICS Agriculture Science students will honor the National FFA Code of Ethics. Failure to comply with the code of ethics will result in removal from the FFA program. They will conduct themselves at all times in a manner befitting their organization, chapter, school and community by: 1. Dressing neatly and appropriately for the occasion. 2. Showing respect for the rights of others and being courteous. 3. Being honest and not taking unfair advantage of others. 4. Respect property of others. 5. Refraining from loud, boisterous talk, swearing, and other unbecoming conduct. 6. Demonstrating sportsmanship in the show ring, judging contests and meetings. 7. Therefore; 1. All policies of the SCUCISD governing students conduct apply at all times to all students. Policies governing smoking, illegal weapons, alcohol, etc. for any person on school property will also apply at all times. Violation forms will be issued for students failing to comply with project center rules. Family members who violate rules will also result in a student receiving a violation notice. Three written violation notices will result in the removal of the project from the Toby Connor Complex. 2. The primary responsibility for supervision at the facility rests with the student and/or parents when instructor is not present after hours. 3. Students will be held financially accountable for willful acts of vandalism. 4. Use of tobacco or alcohol by students or parents on the premises will result in immediate removal of student and project. 6. Each student is responsible for feeding and general daily care of his/her project. Students WILL NOT feed animals or enter pens that do not belong to them unless prior arrangements have been made with the owner or advisor. Daily care includes: Fresh feed Fresh water Removal of manure, soiled areas, and debris from pen Grooming Exercise Monitor the well-being of the animal Clean the feed areas, alley ways, exercise areas, wash racks, and grooming areas after use Returning all equipment to the proper storage place 7. Any student failing to properly care for their animal may be turned in to the local police for animal cruelty and could face charges. 9. NO FIREARMS! 10. NO pets, dogs, etc. 14. Projects are considered complete within 7 days of the student’s last show and must be removed from the complex within those 7 days. Anyone planning to process an animal after the show needs to have a processing date arranged prior to the show and the animal must be removed within 7 days of the last show. BOOK PROCESSING APPOINTMENTS EARLY! Students are responsible for all processing fees. Pens must be cleaned thoroughly within the 7 days, or an additional pen fee will be charged. If a student fails and is unable to show, the animal must be removed from the barn within 7 days of notification of ineligibility, unless attending another show and the student has the opportunity to regain eligibility. 15. If it becomes necessary to remove a student’s animal, the owner will have three days to remove the animal. If the animal is not removed at that time, it will be picked up by an authorized livestock hauler or taken by the AST to Seguin Cattle Company at the owner’s expense. The remainder of the money from the sale of the animal will be sent to the owner. 16. Only students currently enrolled in the SCUCISD agriculture program who are FFA members AND have livestock at the facility are eligible to use the Toby Connor Complex. Students not enrolled in the program, and/ or who do not have projects at the center should not be at the complex. Security cameras are in place to monitor compliance with this policy. Visitors with any member must have written approval with the AST 24 hours prior to visit. Any unapproved visitor can be cited for trespassing by law enforcement. Students will be given a written violation for unauthorized visitors. Only students raising at the barn and their parents are eligible to be at the barn, unless there is a special event occurring at the barn (i.e. meetings, clean ups, etc). 17. The ASTs have the right to remove and ban any individual from the complex. 18. No mechanical, wooden, electrical or metal structures may be placed in pens without the advisors approval. Pen structures may not be altered without the approval of the AST. 19. Loitering at the complex will not be allowed. Students who are present must be working with their animal or cleaning pens. 20. Theft at the Connor Complex will not be tolerated and any student proved to be stealing will be immediately removed from the organization and turned over to proper authorities for prosecution according to district policy. 21. Students and parents must observe opening and closing times for the complex, with exceptions made by the AST. Anyone entering the complex before/after hours will be issued a violation notice unless approved by the AST. The hours are 6:00 am to 8:00 pm. 22. Fighting will not be tolerated. Both parties involved will be immediately removed from the complex and dealt with according to district policy. 24. All vehicles should park in a designated parking spot or in the grass field if all spots are full. Failure to comply can result in towing or ticketing by the City of Cibolo. 25. The Handicapped parking spot is reserved for individuals with proper identification only. 25. All lockers and pens will be assigned by the advisors. Students may not move pens for any reason unless approved by the AST. 27. The safety, sanitation, and appearance of the complex are a priority. Students may be assigned additional duties on specific days. These activities will be coordinated through the supervising teachers. Those students who do not cooperate will be cited which can result in removal from the complex. 28. Students will be allowed to participate in only those shows approved by the supervising teacher. Supervising teachers will not be expected to attend any shows that have fewer than five entries. If this occurs, students will be responsible for transportation of their livestock project if they still wish to attend. 29. The Cibolo Creek FFA Program reserves the right to remove any animal from the complex if any one of the following conditions exists: Animal abuse or neglect in any form Diseased or infected animals Animals that are unsafe to handle Students and parents failing to observe rules Animals not being fed for show purposes Student is no longer in the program 30. The following process will be used if any conditions listed above warrant so: 1. Teacher/Student conference 2. Teacher/Student/Parent Conference 3. Recommendation for action by the administration 33. The raising of livestock at the Toby Connor Agriculture Complex is a student’s privilege, NOT a student’s right! 34. Students and parents should not contact an AST via text or call after hours on the teacher’s personal phone except in the event of an emergency pertaining to the student’s animal. Failure to follow this will result in a write up. After hours is defined as 7:00 pm through 8:00 am, and on weekends. If teachers are contacted and do not answer, leave a detailed message in order to receive a return phone call. 35. In accordance with SCUCISD policy, tractors, gooseneck trailers, and vehicles owned by the district are not for student and parent use. 36. Bumper pull trailers may be checked out through Mrs. Massey at least 72 hours before needed, with the exception of animal emergencies. Check out forms and inspection must be completed. Trailers must be returned within 24 hours of use. A $25 per day fee will be assessed after the 24 hours expires. 37. Students and parents should NOT release their pass code for entrance to the facility to ANY entity. Individuals who are caught giving their pass code to other individuals will be written up. 38. Animals may not exit the facility for any reason without express written permission from the supervising teacher and a completed Livestock Travel Request form on file. The only exception to this rule is exiting for the purpose of livestock shows attended with the supervising ag teacher. The Livestock Travel Request form must be received by the supervising teacher no less than 1 calendar week before the requested date of travel. Animals removed from the facility without this form in place are subject to permanent removal from the facility. A new form is required for each event. 39. Animals removed from the facility for any reason must be returned within 48 hours. Failure to return within 48 hours can result in the student forfeiting the right to house the animal at the facility. The only exceptions will be for the Guadalupe County Youth Show, some major steer shows and veterinary emergencies as deemed appropriate by the advisor. ANIMAL PROJECTS AT HOME When the facilities are adequate, some students may decide to raise livestock projects at home. When making this decision, consider the following: 1. It is highly recommended that only experienced feeders keep their animals at home. Supervision by teachers can not be expected to be more than 1-2 checks per month. The project supervision form in the handbook must be filled out and returned prior to project visits. 2. Students must be able to provide transportation for animals to shows, validations, etc. Due to lack of trailer space, priority is given to the school farm for chapter owned trailers. If time and space allows then trailers may be used to haul animals kept at home. 3. Students must be able to provide medications and dewormers for animals kept at home. These items are bought with pen fees and are designated for use at the barn. Students may pay the appropriate fees and have their animals treated by the advisors. Otherwise, the cost for any medications used on home raised projects will be $1 per milliliter of medication used. 4. Selection is the most important part of your animal project. If you choose to select your animal on your own then you have chosen to raise without help from the teachers. COURSES AVAILABLE IN THE AGRISCIENCE DEPARTMENT 1. Principles of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources 2. Livestock Production 3. Agriculture Mechanics and Metal Technology 4. Small Animal Management 5. Equine Science 6. Landscape Design 7. Veterinary Medical Applications 8. Advanced Animal Science (Can count as 4th Science Credit) 9. Advanced Plant and Soil Science (Can count as 4 th Science Credit) 9. Principles and Elements of Floral Design (Counts as Fine Arts Credit) 11. Wildlife, Fisheries, and Ecology Mgmt. 12. Range Ecology and Management 14. Horticulture Science 15. Professional Standards in Agriculture 15. Agriculture Facilities Design and Fabrication 16. Agricultural Power Systems FFA ALUMNI ACTIVITIES The FFA Alumni is responsible for raising funds to help agriculture students in many ways. The primary fund raising is done to provide scholarships for outgoing senior FFA members and support the agriscience program. If the money is available, the Alumni will also help fund the following activities: 1. Senior gifts at banquet. 2. Help to defray travel expenses for conventions and contests. 3. Purchase of equipment or items needed by the chapter to compete or attend shows and contests. 5. Other items as the club deems them necessary. While participation of parents in this club is not mandatory it is highly encouraged – the more people involved the better it becomes. It also allows the parents to have a say in club activities and gives them valuable information about their children’s activities in the FFA. Parent participation does not affect the student’s opportunity to receive scholarships, etc. from the Alumni. It does make it more difficult for the club to raise the needed money to make the scholarships possible. Scholarships are based on the student’s participation in activities and are NOT guaranteed to every student. Basic qualifications for the Alumni scholarships are as follows: 1. Must be a FFA member for at least three years and have been enrolled in at least six semester long or 3 year long Agriscience classes. 2. Must be a FFA member in good standing. 3.
