Descriptions of our most popular clays
2016 Edition Catalog prices are subject to change. Descriptions of our most popular clays: Low Temperature Clays Grey clays: L211 .A good all purpose low temperature body. Light buff colored. Good for throwing as well as handbuilding. Dries well. Used extensively in schools. L212 .A very smooth talc body which fires to a creamy light buff. Good drying characteristics. Red clays: L210 .A silty smooth red terracotta clay body. Good all purpose body for use in schools. Can be thrown on the wheel as well as used for handbuilding. L215 .A rich red terracotta clay with slight texture. Good for throwing and handbuilding. Darker in color, and a little sandier in texture than our L210. Raku clays: Raku .A lightly coarse body designed for use in the Raku process. A blance of materials makes this clay highly resistant to thermal shock while still having excellent throwing and handbuilding characteristics. While grey in the raw state, it actually fires white. H441G .A fairly coarse grey/white body. Good for handbuilding. It is dark grey in the raw state, but fires white. Great for Raku and scupltural work. Medium Temperature Clays White clays: M370 .A great throwing body, amazingly smooth in texture. Can be used for handbuilding as well. Great for functional ware. Fires to a bright white color. High Temperature Clays White clays: H570 .A great throwing body, amazingly smooth in texture. Can be used for handbuilding as well. Great for functional ware. Fires to a bright white color. Grey clays: H550 .Our best selling high temperature stoneware body. Good throwing characteristics make it a great body for functional work. H435 .Similar to H550, but with a bit more texture. More speck in reduction firing. H431 .Similar to H550 and H435, but with a sandier texture making it a more robust body, and more speck in reduction firings. Less mature than the other two bodies. H441G .A fairly coarse grey/white body. Good for handbuilding. It is dark grey in the raw state, but fires white. Great for Raku and scupltural work. Red clays: H443 .Our best selling red brown stoneware body. Throws well but also good for handbuilding. H440 .Dark red clay. Fairly plastic which makes it a good throwing body. Heavy iron speck in reduction firing. H440G .A good handbuilding body. Fairly coarse texture. High temperature porcelain: P600 .High temperature porcelain body. Smooth & white. P700 High temperature, smooth, very translucent porcelain. Buff clays: M340 .Our best selling clay. A great throwing body, smooth in texture. Can be used for handbuilding as well. Great for use in schools. Fires to a buff, off white color. M325 .A robust, finely grogged clay. Good general purpose buff/ yellow clay which can be thrown or handbuilt. Red clays: M332 .Good handbuilding clay, red brown in color. Has a sandy texture. Great with glazes that show the body iron. M332G .A coarser version of M332. Extra grog added to the body makes it an excellent handbuilding clay. Stands up well for larger projects and has a very nice fired color, red brown. M350 .A plastic very smooth clay with brown tan color. Very good for throwing. M390 .A wonderfully smooth, and richly dark red clay. Great for throwing. Mid temperature porcelain: P300 .Our most popular mid temp. porcelain. Smooth & white. Please inquire if you are interested in the origin, processing of the clay, or technical information including shrinkage and absorption. We have technical sheets available on all Plainsman clays. Plainsman clays Part of our large warehouse stock Clays & Slips, Page 1 2016 Edition Catalog prices are subject to change. Made in Canada. The raw materials that go into most Plainsman Clays are found on the Canadian prairies, making Plainsman Clays the only clay bodies available that are made from naturally occuring Canadian raw materials. Plainsman clays are labelled with an L, M, H or P prefix. This prefix refers to the temperature at which they are normally fired so that you can tell at a glance what firing temperature a clay is meant for. L refers to Low temperature: Cone 05-06. M refers to Medium temperature: Cone 6, and H is for High temperature: Cone 9-10. The P refers to Porcelain, and these are available in both medium and high temperature. Which clay should I buy? Picking a clay is a very personal choice. We carry many varieties of clay to allow you as much choice as possible, including Plainsman clays, Fairey Hy-Bond clays, and clays from four U.S. manufacturers: Laguna, Imco, Seattle, and Clay Art. This wide choice can make it confusing at first to know where to start. There are three major factors to consider when choosing a clay: temperature, color, and texture. 1. Pick a clay in the temperature range you are working in: low, medium, or high. 2. Choose the color you prefer. Colors range from white and grey, to red and dark brown. 3. Decide on the texture you want. Textures range from smooth to very coarse. For throwing on the wheel you will want a fairly smooth clay. If you're handbuilding, most clays can be used, but a coarser clay will survive the drying and firing process better. Some suggested Plainsman clays... Further technical information is available. If you're not sure which clay to pick with all the different choices, give us a call and we can give you some assistance in choosing a clay. Fairey Clays: same clay, different box Fairey & Co. closed their plant in January 1998, and moved to a new location. At that time they decided not to continue producing clays in the new location. The Fairey clays are now being produced at the Plainsman Clay plant in Medicine Hat. These clays are exactly the same as the clays produced for many years at the Fairey location in Surrey. Same materials, same recipe, same product. The only difference is that they are made in a different location, so they will now come in a different cardboard box. Please inquire if you have any questions about the lead time or process. There are 2 ways to have dry Fairey clays made: 1. They can run any amount of dry clay when they are actually producing the same pugged clays. The Fairey clays are only made 2-3 times per year, so there may be a delay of 2-3 months while you wait for the production run of pugged clays. There is an extra mixing cost to do the dry clays this way: $2.00 per bag So, dry clays made this way are the same price as a box of pugged clay, PLUS $2.00 per bag for the mixing cost. 2. If you require dry clays sooner, it is possible to make dry clays at any time. However, 2 conditions apply: - 20 bag minimum: there is a minimum order required of 20 bags. - $135 custom order charge. there is a minimum order charge of $135.00 regardless of the quantity produced. This applies whether 20 or 50 bags are made. So, dry clays made this way are the same price as a box of pugged clay, PLUS the minimum order charge of $135.00 Fairey clays: stocked Clays & Slips, Page 5 2016 Edition Catalog prices are subject to change.
