Deadly Accidents Plague Local
Despite a 48-hour citywide crackdown on speeding, accidents were plentiful throughout Brooklyn. On
Monday evening, two victims died when their vehicle plowed through the Kings Plaza intersection. On
Tuesday morning, two cars were pinned along Paerdegat Avenue North. Later that same day, a man and a
woman were severely injured at Kings Highway near the East 36th street roundabout. On Wednesday morning, a motorcycle driver was allegedly hit by a bus and suffered fatal injuries.
Paerdegat Pin Job Kings Highway Crash
Text by Sam Akhtar
Tuesday morning started off with a bang on
Paerdegat Avenue North when two cars got into a
car accident. At the scene, the driver of a Toyota
Avalon was pinned against a brick fence after her
vehicle was forced onto the sidewalk. The female
driver was extracted from her car by firefighters
using the Jaws of Life. Once she was placed on
the stretcher, the woman’s hand was visibly shaking. The male driver of the other vehicle, an Infiniti
SUV, was also treated by EMS workers. The
extent of both drivers’ injuries was unknown. The
cause of the accident was still under investigation
as of press time.

Possible DUI?
Photos and text by Sam Akhtar
The scene has become an all too familiar site
for residents and yet another horrific car accident
took place at Kings Highway and East 36th
Street. Multiple calls into 911 stated the driver
and passenger of the Honda Accord were
trapped inside their vehicle, which was wedged
against a light pole on the highway island.
EMS transported the bloody male driver and a
visibly hurt female passenger of the Accord to a
nearby hospital for their injuries on Tuesday
around 2 p.m. According to eyewitnesses at the
scene, the driver of a Chevrolet sedan, who was
also involved in the accident, was allegedly suspected of driving under the influence (DUI). As of
press time, the cause of the accident was still
under investigation. The extent of the injuries for
the man and woman were also unknown.

Brooklyn Streets Over Three Day Span
Evening Crash On Avenue U Claims Two Lives
By Dara Mormile
Flatbush Avenue and Avenue U is notorious for
out-of-control drivers who speed through the intersection. Monday, at around 6:30 p.m., the dangerous
thoroughfare was the scene of yet another accident –
this time two people were killed in a horrific collision.
Reports state that a Nissan Maxima, traveling
southbound on Flatbush Avenue, struck a BMW that
was turning onto Avenue U. The Nissan then crashed
into a pole and practically split in half. Officials had
to remove the top of the car to extract the passengers.
Witnesses said the driver of the Nissan, 20-yearold Philbert Martin Williams, was allegedly racing
along the avenue prior to the accident. His passenger, 18-year-old Christina Whipper, died at the
scene. Williams was taken to Coney Island Hospital,
where he was pronounced dead. The two occupants
of the BMW were taken to Kings County Hospital
and reportedly suffered minor injuries.
The funeral for Whipper is scheduled for
Wednesday, May 28th at 888 East 59th Street.

Motorcyclist Succumbs To Accident Injuries
A 26-year-old motorcyclist died as a result of his injuries following an accident on Ralph Avenue and Glenwood Road Wednesday morning. The
motorcycle driver was apparently speeding when an MTA city bus that was traveling northbound on Ralph Avenue hit him. EMS also transported a 75-year-old female passenger of the bus to Brookdale Hospital for minor injuries. The operator of the bus remained on the scene. The investigation is ongoing by the NYPD's Collision Investigation Squad.

It’s My Park Day at Marine Park
Photos and text by Loretta Chin
Any day in Marine Park is fun, but Saturday was
a special day to celebrate Brooklyn’s largest park
and to learn more about its rich history in a day of
free activities in and around the Carmine Carro
Community Center.
The “It’s My Park Day” event, which took place
from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m., was only one of several projects and events taking place borough-wide from May
through October. The day was dedicated to educating visitors about the special history of Marine Park,
which was once a part of a thriving farming community and whose land was at one time owned by the
Lott family.
“It’s My Park Day” events include community-led
volunteer projects, public and private partnerships,
and activities led by local community park groups
with support from the City Parks Foundation and
New York City Parks. For more information, visit
www.ItsMyPark.org.
“The Lott family had the top 10 wealthiest and
largest farms in this area and there was large-scale
agricultural development that ultimately helped support the development of downtown Brooklyn and
Manhattan,” said Alyssa Loorya, a lifelong Marine
Park resident who is also the vice president of the
board of the Hendrick I. Lott House Preservation
Association.
Old-fashioned farm implements were also on display. There were yarn-spinning and wood-working
demonstrations, storytelling, arts and crafts for the
kids, tabling by local civic and community groups
and so much more as part of the activities within the
center. Outside, there were horses and simulated cow
milking.

Canarsie’s Outreach Organization
Faces Some Stale Conditions
By Dara Mormile
When an organization that helps residents with rebuilding faces its own
problems, time is of the essence with
every setback. Thankfully, Bridge
Street Development Corporation staff
evacuated their Canarsie office just in
time – as the presence of mold
appeared over the past couple of
weeks.
“Our staff noticed black growths in
portions of the bathroom,” Chief
Operating Officer Donald Eversley
said. “We had it evaluated and we’re
expected to return to business as usual
by the end of the week.”
Their office is located at 9324
Avenue L, where a leaky roof was
allegedly responsible for the mold
growth. According to Eversley, mold
remediation and interior cleanup prevented Bridge Street staff from occupying the office. Eversley told the
Canarsie Courier that their office is
expected to open again once
sheetrock is replaced and painted by
the landlord.
Ironically,
Bridge
Street
Development Corporation assisted
Canarsiens with obtaining resources
for mold remediation shortly after
Hurricane Sandy wiped out basements in many homes. Bridge Street
Development, which has another
location at 460 Nostrand Avenue, is
available to residents who need help
with all types of community issues,
including mortgage and credit counseling, homeownership assistance
and civic engagement. For more

Development’s services, call 718399-0146.

Beep Visits Marine Park
Civic With Big Prospects
By Jason Linetsky
With a full schedule of meetings for
Tuesday evening, Brooklyn Borough
President Eric Adams took time to pay
the Marine Park Civic Association a
visit and outlined plans for his first
term.
“Too many times you will know
someone through sound bites and we
really don’t get an opportunity to connect with Brooklynites,” stated
Adams. “But, I want you to know that
I get it. I’ve spent two years wearing a
bulletproof vest, standing on street
corners protecting our children. I get
it. I get it that it doesn’t matter if it’s
Marine Park, Brighton Beach or
Brownsville - you want to create an
environment that’s helpful and safe
for children and families. I get it. I get
it very clearly. I’m the right person, at
the right time, to be borough president
because I get it.”
Although many residents wonder if
Adams can fulfill the position long
held by Marty Markowitz, Adams
swore to continue to improve the borough.
“I want my son to be in a borough
where he’s happy that 47 percent of
Brooklyn speaks a language other
than English at home.” Adams continued, “I want him to know the rich
energy of the first Italians to come to
Brooklyn, the first Irish to come to
Brooklyn and the Chinese community
of Sunset Park - the largest Chinese
community in the entire state right
here in the borough of Brooklyn.”
To accomplish this task and many
others on his freshman year list,
Adams first broke the news to his 64
staff members that they would not just
stay around Borough Hall while he
was in office.
“When I first walked in, I said to
forget sitting in this building. Things
are happening out there. They are happening in the streets. We have to go
out and figure out ways to engage
people. You can’t sit in cubicles and
think you’ll have four years of that
with me. That’s over,” the Beep said.
Adams and his staff will be spreading out across Brooklyn and working
with the Mayor’s Office to increase
awareness of the artistic, education,
economic, and cultural strengths of
the borough.
“I want to change the perception
that art can only be in the Brooklyn
Academy of Music area and cultural
district. We have artists all over this
borough. I think, if we can increase
the artistic environment, we can do
great things in this borough. I want to
have a borough where we can raise
healthy children and families. I don’t
want my legacy to be that I have a
Barclays Center. I want my legacy to
be that people can once again invest in
themselves,” he said.
From an economic standpoint,
Adams feels most of the borough is
being left out of high paying jobs such
as with technological companies,
widely known to only be in

Prescription For Treatment: Hospital
Examines Violence As A Disease
Photos and text by Sam Akhtar
“Violence is an equal opportunity
offender,” said Agnes Abraham,
Chairperson of the Community
Advisory Board, at a Kings County
Hospital Center (KCHC) panel discussion against violence. “Violence
can affect everyone,” she said.
No one on the panel is a more
poignant example than guest speaker
13-year-old Gama Droiville. The
teenager was walking along Flatbush
Avenue on April 14th around noon
when he was struck by gunfire
intended for someone else. Droiville
was shot twice and suffered a serious
injury to his right eye, sending the
teen to KCHC. (Just last week, 21year-old Kareem Potomont appeared
in court. The alleged shooter is
scheduled to return to court in July).
It was during his hospital stay that the
humble young man became an inspiration to those around him, including
hospital staff and treating physicians.
The teen joined others on
Saturday, May 17th, in the T building
auditorium, located at the corner of
Clarkson and New York avenues, for
the “Violence As It Affects Your
Health” discussion. Emergency
Department physician and Executive
Director of Kings Against Violence
Initiative (KAVI), Dr. Robert Gore
said, “We often treat the actual physical injuries but we are trying to
approach it from the mental aspect,
before patients are brought into the
hospital.”
Princess Fortin, Deputy Director
of New York City Cure Violence said,
“Violence can be thought of the same
way medical professionals think
about diseases spreading from person
to person when people interact.”
The panel discussed various initiatives such as KAVI, KCHC, Save Our
Streets (S.O.S.) Crown Heights and
Man Up! Inc. as efforts to mitigate
the cycle of violence. These four programs focus on intervention and prevention initiatives and combine as a
collaboration under the KCHC
LIVE! (Let’s Interrupt Violence
Everywhere!).
Hospital responders from KAVI,
S.O.S. and Man Up! are called to
help patients and their families cope
with the trauma of a violent
encounter. Its mission is to offer positive solutions to reduce the chances
of retaliation and further violence in
the community.
Droiville lent his soft-spoken,
inspiring voice to the discussion saying he was hoping “to help get stricter
gun laws” in an effort to curb violence. Dr. Gore said, “I realized youth
violence is a preventable health problem when I started seeing the same
faces over and over again in the
emergency room.”
Another panel discussion covered
domestic violence and sexual assault.
Kathy Diaz-Hines, KCHC KAVI
Coordinator, said there is a generational view on domestic violence. “It
(domestic violence) starts at home. If
I see it, then somehow, it must be
acceptable.” Registered nurse and
Coordinator of KCHC-Brooklyn,
Alice Blair, said the Sexual Assault
Response Team sees a number of
cases because it is a 911 Receiving
Center for victims of sexual assault.
“We have to be on the lookout for sex
trafficking. It’s becoming a bigger
issue,” she cautioned.

Looking For Real Men? You Won’t Find Them Anymore!
Telling It
Like It Is
By Dara Mormile
here have all the cowboys gone? You
guessed it – another annoying pop song
motivated me to write a column on
something that makes no sense, yet it’s the “in” thing
everywhere you look. I’ve seen plenty of blogs about
fashion trends that are ‘do’s’ and ‘don’ts’. If men
dressing feminine is a new ‘do,’ then our country is
heading in a very sad direction, where real men –
burly and brimming with testosterone –no longer
exist.
W
You know who I’m talking about – men who wear
pants that are tighter than a blood pressure cuff
(whether they’re sporting pants to the ground or not
– it just looks ridiculous). Women are the ones who
are supposed to show off their figure with skinny
jeans and fitted tops in bright colors...We’re the ones
who are self-conscious about our wardrobe showing
off the tightness of our derrière – but don’t men need
to wear breathable pants for their...um...boys? I
guess not anymore.
If you shop in most local stores, you’ll see that
they’re not giving men the option to look like a
MAN. They’re selling narrow, short and colorful
clothes for skinny hipsters who walk around wearing
loafers with no socks. I don’t understand how
women could be attracted to a man who dresses just
as ladylike as they do! Are you going to start
exchanging swimwear too?
Now, more than ever, I see men – or ‘boys’ it
seems – rocking styles that include pink sneakers
(don’t four-year-old girls fancy this fashion statement?) and shirts. They could be gang-related colors
for all we know, or it could be the brand that’s so
popular. To me, it’s still effeminate when there are so
many other styles and shades of manliness to choose
from. But wait – those ‘manly’ styles are slowly disappearing! More and more, the ‘metrosexual’ look –
defined as ‘an urban heterosexual male who
enhanced his personal appearance by fastidious
grooming, beauty treatments, and fashionable
clothes’ – is taking over.
Among the younger crowd, there are men whose
shirts are so tight and short, it looks like they’re trying to accentuate their ‘figure.’ In reality, they’re
showing off how they’re disgustingly overweight,
thin as a rail or hairy as an ape. The worst part is
when a man – wearing these metrosexual clothes –
lifts his arms to reach for something, or maybe to
hold onto a pole on a bus or train, and the shirt is so
short that it rides up, allowing everyone to see a
stomach covered with hair or unflattering flesh (on
women, a peak at the belly can be sexy – on a
man....not so much!) Wear a damned t-shirt that’s
long enough to tuck into your pants and hide that
unsightly skin!
Honestly, it still doesn’t sit right with me when
professional, older men sport feminine colors – even
when it’s a pink button-up shirt they’re planning on
wearing to the golf range. It might be distinguishing
and acceptable if they sport a pink or pastel orange
shirt under a blazer – or they’re in “cruisewear” in an
unprofessional environment.
Let’s get real! The current color coordination and
gender based ‘styles’ go against the values we created for children – that pink is feminine and blue is
masculine. Now, we can’t separate boys from girls –
especially guys in their upper teens and lower 20s
who could easily be mistaken for a female if you
don’t look at their face.
In my mind, there’s nothing that says: “I’m ready
to put a dress on now” like a man whose shirt and
pants resembles that of his wife/sister/mother/girlfriend. What possessed the first man who made these
styles “cool” to establish these fashion statements
anyway? No one is making fun of these guys, so it’s
become more and more socially acceptable.
Also, what happened to men of distinction – like
Pierce Brosnan or Denzel Washington, who are contemporary examples of masculinity and testosterone? The rugged, yet clean and sexual male image
has disappeared.

Shot Teen Victim Makes Ctywide Tour
By Sam Akhtar
Gama Droiville was walking with
his family along Flatbush Avenue on
a nice Monday when he was shot. The
13-year-old was shot twice and suffered a serious injury to his right eye.
The shooting of this innocent teen outraged leaders and the community at
large.
On Sunday, Droiville received an
award from Councilman Mathieu
Eugene at Haitian Flag Day on Sunday, May 18th. Eugene said the teen
has been a “true inspiration in his
recovery.” The councilman also said
the City Council intends to honor the
13-year-old with a proclamation on
May 28th.
Ever since the April 14th shooting,
Gama has inspired countless people
with his resiliency, humbleness and
spirit. Because of his gentle demeanor
and the horrific nature of his injury,
Gama was also invited to sing the
National Anthem at Citi Field, home of
the New York Mets baseball team, on
Thursday, May 15th.
Droiville (left) stands with Councilman Eugene.
Droiville, along with his choir from
the French Speaking Baptist Church,
located at 209 Claremont Avenue in
Brooklyn, serenaded the crowd with
their inspired version of “The Star
Spangled Banner.” Even though the
game pitted the New York Yankees
against the Mets, fans from both sides
gave the winning young man a standing ovation on his road to recovery.

got an unexpected intruder Thursday night when a car plowed into the
front window. No one was reportedly injured. According to police, a
driver, while parked in front of the fast food restaurant, mistook the

windows for a short while before things got cookin’ again by Sunday

Local Mother’s Invention To Remove Breastfeeding Stigma
Photo and text by Keciah Bailey
A Bergen Beach mom has invented a convertible
nursing blanket that allows mothers to breastfeed in
public, privately.
Miosotis Melucci, mom of two, remembers the days
of trying to breastfeed her children in public and the
embarrassment she used to feel.
“People look at you as if you’re doing something
wrong, when you’re not doing anything wrong,” Melucci said. “You’re breastfeeding your baby. That got
me very frustrated that I couldn’t do it because people
would look at me in the wrong way.”
After Melucci, 33, had her second child and experienced the same frustrations with breastfeeding, she
said she felt motivated to do something. She knew
she was not the only mother who felt the frustration
of knowing breastfeeding was the healthier alterna-
tive but didn’t feel comfortable doing it in public.
So she created a solution, a convertible blanket that
allows mom and baby to be completely covered while
breastfeeding - but still allows the baby to breathe
and for mom to maintain eye contact with her child,
through a well-ventilated mesh in the top of the blanket.
It also functions as five must-haves for new moms.
With just a few changes in the direction of the zipper,
it can go from a breastfeeding blanket to a burping
blanket, a changing blanket or a wrap to swaddle the
baby at home and even a stroller cover.
Despite her success in creating and marketing the
blanket, Melucci faced many difficulties.
With contributions from her husband and family
members, Melucci acquired enough funding to design
the blanket and have a prototype made through a
company in China in 2012. Not having any prior
business experience, through Google, she found her
mentor, Daniel McQuade, a small business counselor
at Columbia University, to help her market the blanket,
which is patent pending since 2013.
“She was excited and ready to hit send,” McQuade
said. “I’m no expert on nursing blankets, but when I
saw the product, I had my reservations.” He advised
her to first present the blanket to boutiques in Manhattan to see if they would buy it.
Melucci was glad she did. Boutiques loved the
idea but they hated the quality of the product and no
one would buy it. “They crushed my dreams,” she said.
McQuade advised her to redesign the blanket and
use a manufacturing company in the U.S. that uses
organic material.
After Melucci did everything McQuade advised,
she returned to boutiques with a new and improved,
high-end product - and they sold. With McQuade’s
guidance in 2013, she set up her company, Me Beau
Bebe. Today, the blanket is sold in three retail stores
and is also on Amazon.
Melucci migrated from the Dominican Republic
to New York when she was 16 years old. She said
she developed her business sense when she was just
six years old, working on the farm with her father,
selling tomatoes along the roadside. “I went from
selling tomatoes to selling nursing blankets,” Melucci
said with a laugh.
But the business of helping mothers is Melucci’s
passion. She believes mothers should not be isolated
while breastfeeding and should be able to go out and
have a social life while nursing. Melucci believes her
blanket solves this problem.
“Other blankets are not enough to cover you so if
the baby moves, your breast is out and people look
at you strange.”
Melucci hopes her business will continue to expand.
But her greatest hope is that, through her example, her
son and daughter will be motivated to be successful.
Entrepreneur shows off her blanket.

Saturday Fight Night Packs A Punch At PacPlex
Photos and text by Sam Akhtar
The action was fast and furious at the “Battle of
Brooklyn.” Held at Canarsie’s PacPlex, fans packed
into the 1500 Paerdegat Avenue North athletic sports
club on Saturday, May 17th to watch seven actionpacked matches. Before the card got underway, Irv
Landau, part owner of PacPlex, told the Canarsie
Courier about the spacious facility. “We have so many
things here and we just started our boxing program
on the third floor. We have everything including swimming, weights and cardio. We have it all,” he said.
Final Forum Chief Executive Officer and owner, Sal
Musumeci promoted the event and was busy making
sure everyone enjoyed themselves. With a live DJ
hyping the crowd, the energy in the gym was electric. “It was a huge success,” Musumeci said. He is
hoping to bring more events to Canarsie.

Opening Bout: Obafemi Bakare won his pro debut
against Henry Beckford in a four round super middleweight decision. Bakare, from Staten Island, took
the decision against his Long Island opponent. After
the bout, Bakare and his corner man, Tommy Dades,
celebrated the victory.
Brooklyn’s own David “Flat” Starks knocked down
Martez Williamson to take the decision. Starks was
also making his long-awaited pro debut and had boxing legend Yoel Judah working his corner. Starks
showed true punching power when his body shots
took their toll on Williamson, eventually flooring him.
Even before the judges’ decision was announced,
Williamson acknowledged his opponent’s victory,
knowing he lost to a better fighter that night. Starks
is anxious to continue fighting this year. Keep an eye
on “Flat” as he tries to leap over the competition.
In a lightweight fight, Cesar Gonzalez showed a
lot of heart in defeat to Kherani Kessoon. Gonzalez
had a very slow start in the first two rounds, suffering
a cut above his left eye. Even after being knocked
down twice and on the verge of being TKO’d, Gonzalez showed big heart, fighting much better in rounds
three and four. Nevertheless, Kessoon took the victory winning his professional debut in the lightweight
match.
Another promising Brooklyn battler, Delen “The
Sniper” Parsley, ran his record to 11-1-0 by beating
Marcus Beckford in six rounds. Parsley looked as
deliberate as his nickname waiting patiently for his
intended target in Beckford. The tall, lanky 162 pound
super middleweight got a lot of encouragement from
fight fans acknowledging the crowd after his victory.
Despite raucous support from family and friends,
Neptune, New Jersey’s David “Hollywood” Valykeo,
lost a decision to Lamont Capers in a cruiserweight
bout. During the bout, the smaller Valykeo was not
afraid to mix it up with his much taller opponent. But
there was no Hollywood ending to this fight as
Valykeo suffered his first defeat, moving his record
to 4-1-0.
In the only fight not to go to the scorecards, an
impressive Keith “Machine Gun” Tapia remained
undefeated when he boiled over Tobias Rice. Tapia,
who danced to the ring to Pharrell Williams’ radio
friendly “Happy” song, dominated Rice, forcing the
fight to be stopped in the fifth round. Once in the ring,
the Bronx bomber threw a barrage of combinations,
stunning Rice several times during the fight. By the
fifth round, it was too much. Tapia looked anything but
happy as he landed shot after shot while Rice was on
the ropes prompting the stoppage.
The main event was a six round heavyweight match,
pitting undefeated Faamanatuina “The Samoan Truth”
Visinia of California against another Brooklyn fighter,
Jon Bolden. Visinia, who weighed in at a commanding 279 pounds, stayed in the center of the ring as
Bolden tried to use his speed circling his much heavier
opponent. Even with Yoel Judah’s instruction and
encouragement, Bolden was not able to convince the
judges as they awarded the fight to Visinia. The Californian ran his record to 10-0-0, staying undefeated.

“Play Dates” Postponed For Pier Playground

Last week, local residents reported that
potholes were plentiful at a popular playground located at Canarsie Pier (see
“Potholes Pose A Risk For Pier’s
Playground,” Canarsie Courier, 5/22/14).
With the holiday weekend approaching,
concerned parents are worried that their
child could get injured if they fall in one of
the cave-ins while playing. Representatives
from Gateway National Park, which oversees the playground, cordoned off the deteriorating play area last weekend.
Unfortunately, a reopening date has not
been announced so area kids will have to
make their own fun this Memorial Day
weekend.

Senator Joins Fight To Landmark Historic East Flatbush Home
This week, Senator Charles Schumer joined City
Councilmember Jumaane D. Williams, Deputy
Leader, Congresswoman Yvette Clarke and community advocates to urge the New York City
Landmark Preservation Commission to reverse
course on its decision and designate the home at
5224 Tilden Avenue, once occupied by the great
Jackie Robinson, a historic landmark.
Jackie Robinson and his family lived at the East
Flatbush house during the time he began his
extraordinary career with the Brooklyn Dodgers,
and by granting landmarked status, the house would
be preserved and would ensure continued interest in
Jackie Robinson’s legacy on a local and national
level.
Last year, the New York City Landmark
Preserva-tion Commission determined that 5224
Tilden Avenue was not eligible to be designated as
a landmark. The Commission believed that Jackie
Robinson’s family lived in the house between April

1947 and May 1949 and, therefore, the house does
not sufficiently commemorate his life. Williams
reintroduced the initiative with hopes that the
Commission would consider the rich history of the
house, which is probably more important than just
analytical statistics.
“Having paved the way for African American
athletes and leaders, Jackie Robinson is a civil
rights hero and baseball legend. The significance
of this home cannot be understated and so, the New
York Landmark Preservation Commission should
recognize 5224 Tilden Avenue as a historic landmark. Thank you to Councilman Jumaane Williams

Christian Cultural Center Gives “Hope To Haiti”
One of the resources needed in Haiti is access to
fresh and running water. Although the devastating
earthquake in Haiti took place in 2010, the Christian
Cultural Center (CCC) is still bringing awareness to
the country’s basic needs.
In light of CCC’s fundraising efforts to help ravaged communities in Haiti, the church hosted its
fourth annual “Hope For Haiti” event last Saturday,
May 17th. Vendors, artists, performers and others
came together at CCC, 120-20 Flatlands Avenue, to
reflect on what transpired and to demonstrate how
they will continue to help Haiti rebuild.
CCC also honored young entrepreneur Christian
Rogers, who has been raising money to help the people of Haiti by selling custom-made bracelets. To
honor his dedication and hard work, CCC created a
video featuring the youngster’s tireless efforts.
Others at the event showcased their creations and
balloon artist Mr. Vee (Vivens Guillaume) made special hats for children in attendance. You may see and

Canarsie Pastry Chef Was “Molded” By Mentors Here
By Linda Steinmuller
Top Chef move over…Canarsie has Ebow Dadzie,
who was recently named among the top ten pastry
chefs in America by Dessert Professional Magazine.
“My grandmother raised me in the kitchen,” Dadzie
told the Canarsie Courier in an exclusive interview.
“She taught me how to cook and bake.” Through his
grandmother’s guidance, the top chef developed a
love for baking but never planned on pursuing his
passion for dessert as a career path.
Ebow Dadzie was born in Trinidad and Tobago
and moved to Canarsie with his family when he was
an infant. He grew up on East 79th Street, attended
a private elementary school, Roy H. Mann I.S. 78 and
South Shore High School. While attending South
Shore, he wanted to enroll in a computer program –
unfortunately, it was filled. He wound up, by accident, in a travel and tourism program and that’s how
he gained an understanding of the hospitality industry
– a path that ultimately led him on the fast track to
culinary success.
While studying travel and tourism at South Shore,
Dadzie worked as a Human Resources intern at the
W Court, a hotel located on Park Avenue and East
39th Street in Manhattan. “That’s when I realized I
couldn’t sit at a desk all day,” Dadzie said.
After graduating Shore Shore in 1999, he attended
New York City College of Technology in Brooklyn
and graduated in 2003 with a Bachelor’s Degree in
Hospitality Management and a minor in Pastry and
Confectionary Arts. Today, he is the Pastry Chef at
the New York Marriott Marquis in Times Square.
Dadzie, 32, is also a pastry instructor at Monroe
College’s School of Hospitality Management and
Culinary Arts, where he helped lead the confectionary team to two grand prize championships during
the annual Salon of Culinary Art competition in
Manhattan.
Although his parents supported him along the way,
following the culinary path was not their first choice
for their son. “They started coming around in 2007,
when I won my first award,” Dadzie said, referring
Ebow Dadzie and Regis Courivoud stand in front
of their 16-foot replica of the Empire State Building, which won the 2006 Guinness World Record
for the world’s tallest sugar skyscraper.

to his being named Pastry Chef of the Year by Paris
Gourmet. “I think that’s when my parents realized
that I actually knew what I was doing!”
He also attributes much of his success to his high
school track coach, Phil Zodda. “He always stressed
the four d’s – determination, dedication, discipline
and desire. I remember something else he always
said. ‘We don’t use the word can’t here.’”
Dadzie, who bakes all types of national and international desserts, specializes in confectionary art –
sculpting with chocolate and sugar. The top confectioner says he loves chocolate but his favorite dessert
is anything made with high quality vanilla - especial-
ly Tahitian vanilla.
Although he now lives in Linden, New Jersey,
his family still lives in Canarsie. The humble baker
doesn’t forget the impact his up-bringing had on him
and the high school mentors that “molded” him into
“chef stardom.”
His advice to others – “It is possible to follow
your dream. Don’t allow anyone to depress your
thoughts.”
Dadzie will be honored at Dessert Professional’s
21st annual Top Ten Pastry Chefs in America Awards
at the Institute of Culinary Education in Manhattan
on June 2nd.

Canarsie Girls Wrestling Coach Earns Coach Of The Year Award
Photos and text by Jerry Del Priore
When head coach Keith Conrade decided to form
a girls wrestling team at Canarsie Educational Campus
last season, he never envisioned he would get so
much in return for his efforts.
While Conrade relishes in what his girls have given
back to him in the form of spirit, respect and love, the
Beat the Streets Wrestling Program bestowed him with
a more tangible honor: the 2014 Girls High School
Coach of the Year award at the post-wrestling Gala
Celebration at Best Buy in Times Square earlier this
month.
“Beat The Streets selected Coach Conrade because
Coach Conrade has established a culture of girls wrestling at Canarsie,” said Ken Bigley, Director of Programming at Beat The Streets and PSAL girls Wrestling
Supervisor. “His teams are spirited, supportive of
each other, very competitive, and always display good
sportsmanship.”
With sports such as basketball and soccer garnering
all the attention at the high school level, recruiting
for a blood and guts athletic pursuit like wrestling
isn’t an easy task. But Bigley believes Conrade has
done an outstanding job in that department.
“Convincing girls to try a new contact sport that
they and their families are typically not familiar with
is a particularly daunting challenge. But Coach Conrade
has done an exceptional job recruiting girls to the sport
and keeping them actively engaged.”
In typical humble Coach Conrade style, he
deferred the credit to his dedicated, hard-working
squad, who, he said, made the accolade possible.
“I am not surprised to get the award with the team
I have,” Conrade, who also coaches the boys team, said.
“I have an amazing set of individuals. To get Coach
of the Year with the girls I have, it was easy. It was
a no brainer. I didn’t win it, they won it for me.”
This year, Conrade has guided the Lady Chiefs to
an impressive 8-1 regular season record, and a second
seed in the PSAL playoffs. In the first round Tuesday,
Canarsie soundly defeated Taft High School at home.

Despite Lackluster Performance, Canarsie Downs Taft In Playoff First Round
Photos and text by Jerry Del Priore
After losing to Curtis High School, last season’s
PSAL champs, 34-26, to end the regular season last
week, Canarsie girls wrestling team was able to rebound, and defeat Taft Educational Campus High
School, 45-15, at home in the first round of postseason action on Tuesday.
Though the Lady Chiefs (8-1) won, head coach
Keith Conrade wasn’t pleased with their overall performance, citing taking the competition lightly, lack
of intensity, and missed opportunities as the reasons
for their uninspiring mat display.
“They were like the New York Knicks of wrestling
tonight,” Conrade lamented. “They wrestled (down)
to the level of competition. They were underestimating
their opponents. They weren’t optimizing on getting
their opponents to their backs.”
But Conrade will chalk up the nonchalant approach
to just being flat after waiting an hour for the match
to begin. However, it’s by no means a get out of jail
free card for his squad, as the veteran coach is
demanding noth-ing less than maximum effort from
Canarsie going forward.
“We started an hour late, but it doesn’t matter. They

have to adapt and adjust to it,” Conrade explained.
“There is no way a team comes out like they did on
Thursday against Curtis, with their intensity and focus,
and lose by eight to a high level team. And they come
out against a good, small team and squeaked by, in
my opinion, by 25 points.
“This should’ve been a shutout, or, at most, allow
five points in one of the weight classes. But I promise you, it won’t happen again.”
Nikkiann Mitchell (112), Fataya Larry (172) and
Kiyah Williams (198) all picked up pin fall victories
for the Lady Chiefs, while top wrestler Sade Smith
is likely out for the season after reinjuring her shoulder against Curtis, Conrade said.
As for losing to the Lady Warriors during the regular season, if they do perhaps meet in the finals for
the second straight year, Conrade said, “I rather take the
loss in a regular season match and then fine-tune all
our mistakes as a team, individuals, coach, and go
into the finals, and utilize what we learned then.”
Canarsie travels to Brooklyn Tech today for its semifinals match against the Lady Engineers at 5:00 p.m.

Cotton candy, Sno cones, bouncy rides and tons of wacky

were found at East 95th Street and Seaview Avenue on Sunday, May
18th, where the Hebrew Educational Society (H.E.S.) hosted its annual

the crowd. Children created their own colorful masterpieces thanks to
arts and crafts stations. There was plenty of food and refreshments for

Telling It Like It Is...
Teens Advised To Look Out For Video Game Thefts
Continued from page 6
Should we bring back powdered wigs from the
Colonial days? At least these long white tresses
symbolized social status and rank. How about having local shops sell kilts – which are widely worn
by Scottish men? Sure, they’re ‘feminine’ – but
these skirts were worn by Celtic warriors! Kilts are
also worn ceremoniously, like at funerals and
parades, and are considered formal wear. Would
you catch a 25-year-old in Canarsie wearing one of
these socially powerful symbols? No – because
real men don’t wear feminine things like that...
How do I expect a man to dress? When I met
my boyfriend, he was wearing regular, relaxed
jeans and a basic flannel button-up shirt...Nothing
too tight, fancy, bright or outlandish – despite the
fact that we were at a nightclub where dressing
over-the-top is expected.
It doesn’t matter what race or background
you’re from. If you’re a man – and you’re proud of
it – DRESS LIKE ONE! If you’re not proud to be
a man...now’s the time to whip out those skinny
jeans, flashy shirts – and don’t forget to strap on
that purse!

Downtown Brooklyn. Adams will implement programs to increase entrepreneurial and peer-to-peer
education opportunities. Among these ideas will be
chances for entrepreneurs, who are thinking of starting their own businesses, to be mentored by successful Brooklyn business owners and for senior citizens to be trained to teach other seniors computer
skills.
Adams’ initiatives do not stop at improvements,
as he also plans to continue Markowitz’ stance of
advertising the borough as the greatest area of New
York City to visit.
“I want to increase tourism in our borough,” stated Adams. “Millions of people from around the
world come to New York City, but they stay in the
city, in Manhattan. I want them to come to our parks
and theaters, spend money in our restaurants, see
our landmarks. I want them to come to Brooklyn.
I’ve contacted a few of the double-decker bus companies and I’m working on having them go through
our historical neighborhoods and have tourists see
the beauty and history of our borough.”
As Adams put it, “I know I’m expected to fill
Markowitz’ shoes but I have a pair of my own.” And
it appears they are firmly set for a busy freshman
term as Brooklyn Borough President.

suspects at the predetermined location, they were

harmed in the robbery. No descriptions of the gunwielding thugs were given to police, but guardians
are asked to inform their children of the dangers
that lurk online – especially when looking to sell
their gaming systems.

A Grand Day For Grandparents At Marine Park
Photos and text by Loretta Chin
Mother’s Day just passed and Father’s Day is
coming, but grandparents had their very own day
last Wednesday as hundreds of students, community
leaders and grandparents came out to share a day of
food, fun, and music in celebration of Grandparent’s
Appreciation Day.
District 22 schoolchildren from six public schools
and two middle schools offered a wide range of
entertainment and musical genres for senior citizens
who spread out in a circle in the colorfully decorated Carmine Carro Community Center in Marine
Park.
“I realized that many of our students’ grandparents were their primary caregivers and it’s a wonderful day to show appreciation for all they do,” said
event organizer and community family advocate
Therese M. Salli.
A good example is Horace Mathis, 65, and his
wife Barbara-Jean Mathis, 62, who came to see their
11-year-old granddaughter, Naya Mathis of P.S. 198
– who performed an African dance.
“We are raising our granddaughter,” the proud
grandparents said.
Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams and
Assemblywoman Helene Weinstein both made special guest appearances. Adams spoke about how his
grandmother inspired him as he was growing up and
planted the seed of possibility in him throughout his
career. He said that she was the one he would turn
to during difficult times.
“She had 35 grandchildren and she loved them all,
but she spoiled me,” said Adams. “She said,
‘Grandson, you can be whoever and whatever you
want to be.’”
Many other grandparents could relate to what
Adams said and had more to add about the important
role of grandparents.
“When somebody is sick or has a half day, grandma’s always available,” said Pamela Di Scala, who
came to see granddaughter Mia Calafiore, 10, of P.S.
222. “The pay stinks, but the benefits are great,” she
added.

•Feelings of incapacity for work
•Difficulties in concentration.
•An inability to enjoy anything.
With regard to the symptoms listed
above, we must first remember that
they require a thorough examination
by a competent medical doctor. Once,
however, an M.D. has ruled out any
organic disease, we must consider
these symptoms as expressions of
deeply hidden conflicts in human relations. This is the area psychotherapy explores, and this is when
psychotherapy can help.
In addition, psychotherapy is most
effective in working with people who
function quite well. In such people,
unconscious conflicts will appear as
feelings of being dissatisfied with
their lives, or feeling stuck, or bored,
or even emotionally dead. Such people appear constricted, cramped and
inflexible, but they function. Fre-
quently alcohol and drugs are sought
as a way of anesthetizing themselves
from these uncomfortable symptoms.
However, this only further impairs
functioning and sets into motion a vicious cycle of self-abuse.
All these symptoms of dissatisfied
living and restricted functioning are
examples of unconscious processes
affecting our conscious behavior and
our way of living.
Only through knowing and understanding our conflicts can we hope to
effect change. Only through psychodynamic psychotherapy can we make
the unconscious conscious, and begin
to understand how and what moves us
and gain greater control over behavior
and our lives.

Going On A Health Kick At The H.E.S.
Health enthusiasts got an early jump at the second annual Healthy Living Expo hosted by the
Hebrew Educational Society (H.E.S.). On
Sunday, May 18th, the H.E.S. gave free admission to adults of all ages to take advantage of
free screenings. Participants were able to get an
array of services including free pneumonia shots
and blood pressure check-ups. The event, held
at 9502 Seaview Avenue, gave residents a
chance to see what they could do to get themselves in better shape just before the unofficial
Memorial Day kick-off to summer. If you missed
this screening, don’t worry yourself sick! Check
out the Canarsie Courier’s Community Guide for
future events taking place around your neighborhood. You may see and purchase more photos from the event by visiting www.canarsiecourier.com. Just click on the blue button.

also a nominee for 1199SEIU/League
Nurse of Distinction honors.
Ms. Tangney is a Senior Physical
Therapist who has been with the hos-
pital since 2007.
“When Elizabeth joined our rehab
staff, she came with a high level of skills
and professionalism coupled with dedication to patient care,” said Michael
Mattia, DPT, MHA, Director of Rehabilitation Therapies. “She embodies the
spirit of ‘always here to help’ – consistently providing the highest quality
of care with a smile and a positive
attitude for which she receives accolades from colleagues, patients and
their families.”
Mr. Leyko, Director for Administration, manages respiratory therapy services and has transformed a department
to a high-functioning team of professionals that provide state-of-the-art care
to patients. Under his leadership, the
hospital’s respiratory therapy team has
successfully weaned patients from ventilators and shifted airway management
to bi-level positive air pressure, which
allows a better experience for patients
while ensuring their ventilation.
“Among our fellow staff members,
there is perhaps no greater honor than
to be recognized by one’s peers,” said
Ms. Hetsrony. “The Heart Award is a
testimony to the dedication to patient
care, interpersonal skills, and excellent work ethic of our honorees.”

important issue,” said Schumer.
“I am pleased that Senator Schumer has joined
me in calling the New York City Landmarks
Preservation Committee to recognize Jackie
Robinson’s house as a historic landmark. I
strongly believe that there is a continued need to
address racial and ethnic bias and tensions in
New York City, which is why it is more important now than ever to raise up symbols like this
house, not only to advance social equality, but to
use as an education establishment for youth to
learn from for years to come,” Williams said.
Schumer put his full support behind a national
campaign, launched by Councilmember
Williams last year and discussed the urgency for
New York City to provide a landmark designation to this building so that it cannot be altered or
torn down. Schumer explained that by granting
New York City landmark status to the house, the
city would first and foremost honor this trailblazer’s important time spent in East Flatbush.

NOW
THEN
For a “Touch of Italy” right here in Canarsie,
residents visited Caffé Degli Amici (translated
“Café of Friends”) for an after dinner espresso
and delicious pastries. The café, which was
located at 1356 Rockaway Parkway on the
southwest corner of Farragut Road, had outdoor
tables where customers enjoyed their specialties – Italian soft drinks and juices, espresso,
cappuccino, pastries and cheesecake. Caffé
Degli Amici was open for a short time in the
early 1980’s (see photo on left). After it closed,
it was home to several businesses, including
luncheonettes and delis.

Cleanliness Is Next To Godliness On Church Lane!
Photos and text by
Linda Steinmuller
Church Lane between Remsen Avenue and East 91st Street is an unsightly mess and Canarsie resident Barbara
Favorito is fed up! Unsure who is responsible for cleaning up the eyesore
- which is an accumulation of trash,
old tires and overgrown weeds - she
contacted the Canarsie Courier and
City Councilman Alan Maisel for help.
The problem is that Church Lane, as
well as other lanes around the community, are “orphaned streets” according to the councilman – an issue he’s
been grappling since he took over the
council seat in January. “These orphaned
streets are publicly used streets that
the city refuses to accept ownership
of,” Maisel explained. He has sponsored a bill that would require extensive
research to map the “forgotten” streets
but residents say they can’t wait until
the issue gets resolved. Fortunately,
Remsen Avenue resident Barbara
Favorito (left), Kurt Sullivan and
Councilman Alan Maisel (right).
Millennium Development sent a team

of workers to take care of the problem
– and the lane is looking spiffier than
ever! Thanks to Councilman Maisel
and the Millennium crew!

Canarsiens Will Soon Have A “L”ot More Trains To Travel
By Dara Mormile
With more people moving into neighborhoods in
Brooklyn along the L line, the MTA has added hundreds of new trains to accommodate the rapid
growth. Due to an increased demand – and based on
analysis of schedules – NYC Transit Authority is
adding service once again to the L, as well as the
connecting M line.
“Among the changes is a significant increase in L
weekend service, which will decrease wait times for
customers as well as increase capacity on a line that
continues to see ridership growth, most notably during off-peak hours,” said NYC Transit President,
Carmen Bianco. “Ridership is at an all-time high,
including records for weekend ridership. These are
customers who rely on us for all of their transportation needs, both work and play, and we are trying to
meet that demand with our available resources.”
The adjustments on the L and M represent significant increases in service to accommodate growing
ridership. They are:
• Saturday L service will be increased by a total
of 33 round trips between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m.;
• Sunday L service will be increased by a total of
23 round trips between 8 a.m. and 9 p.m.;
• Weekday evening L service will be increased by
a total of three round trips;
• Weekday M service will be increased by a total
of one round trip (one northbound trip in the morning and one southbound trip in the late afternoon);
Increased Forest Hills-bound weekday morning
and Metropolitan Avenue-bound weekday afternoon
service on the M line will also lower wait times during peak periods.
“NYC Transit regularly reviews, evaluates and
adjusts subway and bus schedules to ensure that
they accurately match current rider demand. These
reviews are a critical part of our efforts to provide
customers with the most efficient and effective service possible,” Bianco added.
Implementation of the changes, which are scheduled for Fall 2014, will cost approximately $1.7
million annually. M service changes will be concurrent with the Hurricane Sandy-related restoration of
R service through the Montague Tube.
These changes are in addition to the schedule and
service changes already planned for implementation
in June 2014 that include eight weekday and eight
weekend round trips on the L and the weekend
extension of the M from Myrtle Avenue to Delancey
Street-Essex Street.
