All total, the CPF received $12,000 towards the purchase of a K9. This Fall, “Ringo” the dog was selected by the Department and sent to training in the Norfolk area with his handler. Ringo has one more month of training before he will head to Charlottesville to begin his career with the CPD. The CPF wants to thank each and every one of the individuals and businesses who contributed to the purchase of Ringo. The community as a whole will benefit from having this valuable resource as a part of our police team. A police K9 is primarily used for its superior sense of smell. However, a dog’s mere presence during tense encounters with suspects often results in compliance. Many times this Rachel Harmon UVA Law School can even prevent the use of deadly force and save lives. You help us stay safe from bad guys. “ “We appreciate your compassion, your dedication, your empathy, and your positivity. “ “From the bottom of my heart, thank you all for the services you provide to crime victims. Your treatment and care of victims on the front lines is essential to their healing and ability to move forward with their lives. Never forget the impact you can make. “ Last month, the CPF once again hosted the Charlottesville Police Department’s annual Awards Dinner. We asked the community to “Treat a Cop to Dinner” by donating as well as send a “Message of Thanks” that we would share with the officers. The quotes above are just a sample of the messages that we received. Officers and their families not only enjoyed a special night out, a delicious meal, fabulous raffle and door prizes, but felt the support and gratitude from community members and businesses. At the dinner, Chief Longo recognized the outstanding contributions and efforts of our city’s finest. He shared stories of officers going above and beyond the call of duty in heroic ways. Awards were given to more than two dozen recipients for awe-inspiring police work, including: The assistance provided by a citizen store owner who helped remove a con-man from the streets. An officer’s swift actions to apprehend a suspect who attempted to abduct a 19 year old UVA student. The kindness of three officers who pooled their own money to secure a hotel room and food for a homeless woman and child on the street. An officer’s rapid response to perform CPR on an unresponsive man until medics arrived, thereby saving his life. We appreciate all the friends and sponsors who helped support this event and said “thank you” to the men and women who work tirelessly to protect our community and help create a safe and desirable place for individuals and businesses to reside and flourish. Over the past couple of months, two partnerships have developed that we’d like to highlight...both of which will not only benefit the Charlottesville Police Department, but ALL local police, fire, and rescue personnel. Orthotics Clinic: The Charlottesville/Albemarle Fire-Police Orthotic Clinic is a new program created by Brett Richey of Richey & Co. Shoes and our area’s foot health community to benefit our local first responders. Custom orthotics provide additional support to alleviate pain or reduce the chance of injury. Many foot ailments can be successfully treated with custom foot orthotics. These orthotics normally cost $300 to $500 per pair, and often are not covered by insurance. Through this new program, first responders can visit any one of the participating doctors and receive custom foot orthotics for a small fee. What a creative idea to help people who are on their feet helping others! Wills for Heroes: Founded after the 9/11 tragedies, The Wills for Heroes national program provides essential legal documents free of charge to our nation’s first responders, including wills, living wills, and powers of attorney. By helping first responders plan now, they ensure their family's legal affairs are in order in the event that a tragedy occurs. Local attorneys Julie A. King and Melissa Wolf Riley wanted to bring this national program to the Charlottesville area to "protect those who protect us." The program will take place in Spring 2014. Etcetera... Here’s what else is going on at the CPF: Congratulations to the recent graduates of the Citizens Police Academy! This 10 week course gives local citizens an in-depth look inside the CPD and its role in the community. Welcomed 7 new officers to the Department with a dinner following their Academy graduation. Sponsored Domestic Violence training for officers in May. Sent a Sergeant to the National Criminal Justice Command College in Richmond this summer/fall. He brings the valuable knowledge he gained from this class back to the CPD for all to benefit. Want to know how you can get involved?
