I am very honored to be serving as the ASID Orange County Chapter President for the 2009/2010 term. Inclusivity, professionalism, and increased networking opportunities are all action words to describe the Board’s goals for this upcoming term. The phrase “getting back to basics” will also apply as we continue to strengthen our relationships within the design community, as this current economic climate has given many of us a “new normal” to experience. As many of you may be aware, I have literally grown up within the interior design industry, with my mother and best friend serving as the ASID Orange County Chapter President back in the early 90’s. My childhood memories are filled with visits to her office and sitting at her drafting table. I share this story because each one of us has a path which has led us to the interior design industry – for some of us, this is a second career, for others, it is something they always knew they wanted to do from childhood. Regardless of how we all became involved within this industry, we all have something in common - a deep respect for the industry and a desire to belong to a society which fosters professionalism, education, and increased experiences for its membership. In preparation for this new term, your upcoming Board of Directors and Committee Chairpersons had a “Leadership Orientation Day” where all 30 of us had the opportunity to further acquaint ourselves with one another and fully understand our job descriptions and responsibilities. Prior to the meeting, “branded” Generational Binder’s were created, specific for each leader, to serve as a general guideline about chapter protocol, meetings, in depth job descriptions, etc. An organizational leadership chart, editorial newsletter calendar and a website posting calendar were introduced to the chapter leaders for easy reference tools . As organization is a keystone for success, these Generational Binders will be left by this year’s leadership as a legacy to our chapter. As it is our intention to bring our chapter “back to basics” – allowing us to focus on giving value to our membership through a variety of NEW events and ideas… One such objective will be to create a consistent advertising campaign in our local magazines to show the value, we as interior designers, bring to a prospective client, to a builder, an architect, and to the professional community. Without the assistance of our volunteer leaders within this organization we would not be able to provide so many fantastic opportunities. Our recent Flea Market, chaired by Karen Ziccardi, was a fundraiser to support the 2010 community service project HomeAid, which was a great success! The 2009 Trade Show provided the opportunity to nibble on wonderful food while viewing current sources as well as checking out our new ASID OC products. A big thank you to Jamie Namanny and her committee for all their dedication to this event! To celebrate our extraordinary chapter leaders, past, present, and future – Riviera Magazine hosted an exciting evening to honor them. The entire membership was invited to participate in this celebration to support and encourage future leaders to participate in our chapter and celebrate the past leaders who have made this chapter the success that it is today. 2010 will be an exciting year for both our local chapter as well as the National Chapter of ASID as we will be celebrating our 35th Anniversary! This year we will unveil a new relationship with the American Institute of Architects Orange County Chapter at a wonderful networking event sponsored by LUXE Magazine. This will be the first time our two groups have formally gathered together to network – again, going back to basics and establishing key contacts for potential business leads. The Editor-in-Chief of LUXE Magazine will help demystify the editorial process of submitting a project. Through strong organization and lots of planning in my President-Elect term last year, a strong foundation has been built to thrive in this coming term. I am excited for this new beginning and anticipate a year filled with wonderful surprises, adventure and success for our chapter! With Much Enthusiasm and Respect, Brooke Ziccardi, ASID, CID, LEED AP President ASID, Orange County Chapter Design Orange County 3 letter from the president-elect Barbara Keller, ASID, CID Dear Membership, It is with great excitement that I begin my time as President-Elect of our dynamic chapter. I believe this is going to be a wonderful, successful year for all of us. Our Board has many terrific plans for the year that will provide great opportunities to build relationships, learn new things, give back to our commu- nity, and be inspired. Plus, on a more global note, the economy is beginning to pick up; what good news! As I look back over the challenges of this year, I have frequently reminded myself to look at what is really important, and what consistently popped up in my mind are relationships—with family, friends, colleagues, and clients. These relationships are what keep us going both personally and professionally. Our chapter offers many opportunities to build relationships through our meetings and various events. This has already happened with the outstanding Trade Show where designers, students, and our IP members made great connections or reconnections. The Flea Market is a fun event that connects ASID with new people, giving us the opportunity to let the public to know more about us, while other upcoming events give our chapter the chance to give back to our Orange County community and make new friends. We also have active Student Chapters whose members look forward to developing relationships with us. We are very fortunate to have so many opportunities to reach out to others. I am looking forward to continuing to build my relationships with each of you and to developing new friendships with new members and students. I wish you all a wonderful winter season filled with joy, inspiration, and much creativity! We had a crowd playing for fabulous raffle prizes, like a Tiffany necklace and earring set and a round of golf for four. We had to wind down the evening around 11:30pm, otherwise we would of played on until the wee hours. I believe everyone had a blast - I know I did! Brooke Ziccardi and I had fun looking through work I had done during graduate school years until now especially enjoying our mother/daughter photos captured during our work abroad. Adriel Cogdal graciously narrated the presentation video prepared by Paul Self of Audio Visions. Art and wall décor, however, is the finishing touch that brings the entire vision together. A finely crafted painting or sculpture is the icing on the cake. It is a tip of the hat to all the hard work put into the room thus far. During my time working for Steffanino’s Gallery, it has been my pleasure to assist many designers with a great diversity of art and wall décor. Our client’s needs vary greatly, from beautifully framed posters, to custom made original artworks. At Steffanino’s, we employ a professionally trained staff of artists and craftsmen, who can work with the interior design community to create unique works of art for a specific location. Often the art is tailored to work well with fabric swatches, wall color, furniture, and even floor samples brought to us by the designer. Sometimes this process works in reverse, particularly when the designer is working with a high-end residential client. I have had the opportunity to frame some expensive works of art that the homeowner had purchased, and then wanted the entire room designed around the art. Of course every piece of art in the project needn’t be an original museum piece. At Steffanino’s I have often taken what would have been merely a poster and transformed it into what looks like an original artwork at a glance. Methods such as canvas transferring, crackle finishing, and deckling the paper edges, can all contribute to the perceived value of a piece. This kind of technique is particularly valuable when we are creating art for a large hospitality, or model home job, and the budget is of great importance. Here at Steffanino’s, all of us take great pride in the creativity we are able to express when it comes to meeting our client’s needs. ThePARTNER designers we work with appreciate our INDUSTRY ability to come up with new and innovativePARTNER ways to solve their design problems. The objective is to bring qualified vendors and interior designers together to network and enjoy an evening of good cheer. This year’s trade show met those objectives allowing all our guests to come away with new and promising business connections. The trade show was held again at the Bren Events Center at UCI, Irvine. We introduced a new top notch catering service that offered a tantalizing presentation for both the trade show and the CEU meeting. Thirty-two of Orange County’s most outstanding green vendors and manufacturers came for an afternoon of fresh outdoor air and wholesome rivalry; Bentley Prince Street, Steelcase, Sherwin Williams, Knoll, Plyboo, Dura-palm, Lumicor, Design Tex, Haworth, Vetrazzo, to name a few. Fourteen students are on the Board with events loaded on the calendar and over 50 students attending each meeting. A student mixer at Islands Restaurant, famous designers speaking at events such as Nancy Corzine and Lisa Garriss, field trips to furniture manufacturers and a holiday bash planned at the Blake House Showroom in Laguna Niguel, are just some of the key events. After months of promotion and registration opening in September, students finally had a chance to experience a day-in-the-life of a design professional or industry partner. Thanks to the many design professionals who offered their time to mentor a student, over a dozen Orange County students experienced a unique opportunity to shadow a professional for an entire day. Students travelled to Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego to spend time with their chosen designers. One designer even had a student come all the way from Virginia! Shadow day opportunities in Orange County were limited, with over twenty students on a list waiting to be paired with a professional, so demand was high for the few shadow day events that were available, most of which were taken on the opening day of registration. Student reviews continue to come in and have all been very positive experiences for both students and professionals alike. Vanessa Evans, ASID Student Member from the Interior Designers Institute in Newport Beach, found her day with her designer to be enjoyable and informative. Her chosen designer spent the day with her at the Laguna Design Center. “I received tours of each showroom plus such goodies as catalogs and online INDUSTRY PARTNER information to each showroom. I was honored to be fortunate enough to hear from each showroom and learn from each vendor what was so special INDUSTRY PARTNER Design Orange County 26 INDUSTRY PARTNER INDUSTRY PARTNER about the product.” Jessica Scott, Student Chapter President at Westwood College in Anaheim, sent a text message immediately following her shadow event thanking ASID for such an incredible opportunity. “I was thrilled to be able to contribute to my student and give to them an experience that would impact them in such a profound way. As a professional I think we take for granted what little we have to do to give back to our students and emerging professionals. A glimpse into what we do on a day-to-day far surpasses what can be learned in a classroom setting and is an invaluable contribution to a student designer”, comments Brooke Ziccardi, President of the ASID Orange County Chapter. “It makes a huge difference and affects them in ways we may never know”. After spending the day with a Vice President and head designer for a leading closet manufacturing company in Los Angeles, I can say that my shadow experience was truly inspiring and one that only comes once-ina-lifetime. My mentor was so generous with her knowledge, openly sharing her day-to-day experiences and fully committed to tailoring the experience to whatever expectations I may have had. I truly valued and appreciated her sacrifice of time and offer to stay in touch even after the event. What an incredible gift from a student’s perspective! RealWorld DesignWeek is an annual program that we hope you will participate in again next year! Thank you again to all who contributed time, energy and knowledge to our design student community!
