T T RE E BREDG Ju 0 ELD 3 ly July 29 1 this 2014, See us for all of your banking needs. 2 PRESIDENT's MESSAGE On behalf of The Neshoba County Fair’s Board of Directors of The Neshoba County Fair Association, I welcome you to the 125th Neshoba County Fair, Mississippi’s Giant Houseparty. The Fair is the largest and oldest campground fair in America. It’s the cabin atmosphere that brings people back for a week of fun and fellowship. Mississippi is known as “The Hospitality State” and there are few better places to find such welcome and generosity in late July than at The Neshoba County Fair. The fair will have great entertainment and activities for the young and old. Visit the hospitality booth in the Exhibit Hall for a cool drink and history of the Neshoba County Fair. over on the c The 2014 Neshoba County Fair Program cover displays the heart of The Neshoba County Fair, the Founders Square Pavilion. Originally constructed in 1894, five years after the Fair was born, the present building replaced the original structure in 1914, making it 100 years old on this, the 125th anniversary of the Neshoba County Fair. The current building was completely restructured in 2003 with no cosmetic changes, but made more Fair patron friendly and structurally sound. The wooden benches are original to the 1914 structure, seating thousands in the heat and under the stars of our Mississippi days and nights. We hope you have an enjoyable week or visit and if there is anything we can do to make your time with us more enjoyable, please let us know. Have a safe and happy Fair and learn more about this grand tradition at www.neshobacountyfair.org. Gilbert Donald, President The Neshoba County Fair Association, Inc. The pavilion is the icon of the Mississippi political scene. It continues to be the premier venue for countless elected officials and candidates to stump their pleas for public office, from the United States President down to county constables. Beauty pageants, cake walks, late night sings, bands of all genres…If only the building could talk, what stories it could tell and memories it would rekindle. FOR EMERGENCY AND SECURITY assistance during the fair, call the Fair Dispatch at 601.656.0386 Mission Statement The purpose of The Neshoba County Fair Association is to share and celebrate with those who come our way through agriculture and cultural exhibits, entertainment, political interaction, social and family events, sporting events and the friendly open door cabin atmosphere that defines “Mississippi’s Giant Houseparty®”. The mission of The Neshoba County Fair Association is to maintain the integrity of The Neshoba County Fair as defined and established by our forefathers to always provide a safe, wholesome venue for friends and family to gather. 3 BOARD OF DIRECTORS Gilbert Donald, Doug Johnson, Dr. Joe Jordan, C. There they showed farm animals, farm produce and women’s handiwork. PURPOSE: To encourage farmers to raise better crops and farm animals. OFFICIALLY ORGANIZED: After two successful picnics, the fair was organized in 1891 when officers and a board of directors were elected. NAME OF FAIR: The fair was originally called “Stock and Agricultural Fair” STOCK IN FAIR: Preferred stock in the fair was sold as early as 1892. This stock was “called in” in 1936 and common stock was issued. PREMIUMS: 1894 records show that premiums amounting to $200.00 were offered for best farm and garden display, best mule and best trotting horse. RACING: Harness and Running horse races have been held since 1894. The red clay, ½ mile oval currently in use is 100 years old, having been constructed in 1914. For 85 plus years, it was Mississippi’s only licensed horse racing track. GIANT OAKS: On Founders Square planted in 1898 and now being replaced. GROUNDS LIGHTED: Originally “lights” consisted of pine knot torch lights atop 19-foot poles, which had a shelf covered with red clay to prevent the wood from burning. This method of lighting was replaced by a dynamo for lighting purposes, and by electricity in 1938 when electric power came to the rural area. BATHROOM FACILITIES: Since no waterworks existed, bathroom facilities were the most primitive, until 1938 when electricity arrived and wells could be built. POLITICS: All state, district and local candidates or as elected officials have spoken from the pavilion since 1896. Presidential candidate Ronald Reagan spoke in 1980, John Glenn in 1983 and Michael Dukakis in 1988. REGISTERED TRADEMARKS: “Neshoba County Fair Association, Inc.”, “Mississippi’s Giant Houseparty” and “The Neshoba County Fair, Mississippi’s Giant Houseparty” registered in 1983. CABINS: There are 600 individually owned cabins on the grounds. Also space for 500 plus RV units. PAVILION ON FOUNDERS SQUARE: Built in 1914 with only minor repair work having been done since construction. Completely restructured in 2003 with no cosmetic changes. Exhibit Hall: While different buildings were built and utilized from the days of the first Fair, the current structure was built in 1924 and has undergone repairs, improvements and modification since, the most current being a re-roofing in 2013. WASTEWATER / SEWAGE SYSTEM: The system is comprised of 2 lagoons located west of Highway 21. Pumping stations located inside the residential areas transfer all wastewater to the lagoons. This system is privately owned by the Fair Association and maintained and monitored by licensed personnel. 6 s t n e v E f o e l u d Sche ABINS C F O R U TO LY 27, 2014 • 2-4 pm , SUNDAY JU : nset Strip 64 on Su e Family Cabin 2 # N I B CA Luk Perry Herman Margaret : Mabel & w o ll o appy H 230 on H CABIN # Perry Jackson a and Pipp and quare: unders S eir children; Dr. nd o F n o 3 3 a th CABIN # ot Gamblin and aukee, WI; Mr. w D ; il L d , A Dr. f M Tag an amblin o a) of Birmingham r. and G k r la C meli TX; D Mrs. Breeze (A achel) of Dallas, n ia r B . s (R Mr Chip Wall n, MS and Mrs. amblin of Madiso G ff Mrs. Je HOTOS P F O N IO T PRESENTEAXHIBIT HALL DAILY AT THE DASH FOR THE STASH Clues can be picked up at the Souvenir Stand on Sunday, Monday & Tuesday at 1:00 PM.
