served in the Military during World
War II, (Jack & Donald-Army,
Joseph & Andrew - Navy). Earl attended Aircraft Mechanics School in
Amarillo, Texas, and Aerial Gunnery
Training in Las Vegas, Nevada. He
flew in B-17’s as an Aerial Gunner.
During the Normandy invasion Earl
was in a B – 17 receiving the Air
Medal for this campaign.
June 6, 1944, 160,000 Allied troops landed
along a 50-mile stretch of heavily-fortified
French coastline to fight Nazi Germany on the
beaches of Normandy, France. General Dwight
D. Eisenhower called the operation a crusade
in which “we will accept nothing less than full
victory.” More than 5,000 ships and 13,000
aircraft supported the D-Day invasion, and by
day’s end on June 6, the Allies gained a foothold in Normandy. The D-Day cost was high
-more than 9,000 Allied Soldiers were killed
or wounded -- but more than 100,000 soldiers
began the march across Europe to defeat
Hitler.

beginning everything went
wrong at Omaha. Special
“DD” tanks (amphibious
Sherman tanks fitted with
flotation screens) that
were supposed to support
the 29th division sank in
the choppy waters of the
Channel. Only 2 of the 29
launched made it to the
beach. Jim carried a B.A.R.
(Browning Automatic Rifle) during his time in the
Army. “When the doors of
his landing craft opened he
hit the beach and fired into
the hills.” The fighting, the
death, the noise lasted into
the night, “It seemed to last
forever.” “Half the people
were dead,” Jim recalls,
“heads gone, arms gone.
I saw a guy carrying his
arm up the bluff. He didn’t
want to lose it.” “The next
day I was wounded when
an artillery shell exploded,
shrapnel went through my
helmet and into my head.
There was blood all down
my face, I was wondering
if I lost my eye. A priest
actually gave me my last
rights.”

Each Demolition team was
loaded in an LCM, (landing craft) these landing
craft carried a ton of explosives and accessories, all of
which were hand carried.
Anthony was a demolitionist; he carried eight sticks
of C2 explosives strapped
to his back and his front.
“On the way into the beach
these boats were loaded
with explosives, when one
would get hit they would
explode and the one next
to it would explode too.”
“Most of the men in my
unit were killed by gunfire; some were blown up
when bullets struck the
explosives strapped to our
bodies.” Anthony received
his Purple Heart for taking
a bullet through the back of
his hand during D – Day.

Bill will be the keynote
speaker at Northwest
Indian College’s 2013
commencement ceremony at 5 p.m. June 14
at the Wex’liem Community Building (2100
Lummi View Drive, Bellingham).
In addition to serving
as AIHEC CEO and president, Bill – an enrolled
member of the Navajo
Nation and Arizona attorney – has also served
as the first Executive Di-
rector of the White House
Initiative of Tribal Colleges
and Universities.
Under Bill’s leadership,
tribal colleges have made
significant gains, including: the largest funding
increases ever received by
tribal colleges in annual
federal appropriations; first
visit by a U.S. president to
a Tribal College; establishment and funding of new
education and infrastructure programs in several
federal departments and
agencies; and more.
The graduation ceremony is open to the community and will include a
celebratory meal.

Lummi Nation School Art walk
For the past three years,
Lummi Nation School students have been honored
to participate in the Bellingham Children’s Artwalk,
a city-wide exhibition of
student artwork displayed
in many area businesses.
This project is sponsored
by Allied Arts of Bellingham to encourage students
to express themselves in
various art media. Many
schools participate in this
display of creativity. Lum-
mi Nation students’ art is
displayed in Woods Coffee
(Prospect St. ) in downtown
Bellingham throughout the
month of May.
As a part of this yearly celebration of art each
spring, the Lummi Nation
School students who participate, go on a field trip
to see the art work and connect to specific people in
the art world. This year, we
were privileged to visit Jeff
Aspnes, a gifted local pho-
tographer who is displaying
his striking photographs
at the Blue Horse Gallery.
Jeff spent a great deal of
time teaching our students
about photographic techniques and learning to appreciate their own creativity. He encouraged all of
the students to follow their
own individual interests
and to strive for excellence
in what they choose to do.
He shared many “tricks of
the trade” regarding setting
up and shooting photos to
get beautiful effects. All of
the students really enjoyed
meeting with Jeff in the
three sessions he held for
the group.
Another kind patron
of the arts was Brend from
Allied Arts. She welcomed
the students into the gallery and shared information about many teaching
artists who display their
work there. She was very
willing to answer all of the
students’ questions and en-
couraged them to continue
to be creative through art.
She also gave out animal
crackers, yum!

at Cornwall Park with pizza
and time to relax before
boarding the school bus for
the trip back to Lummi Nation School. The students’
behavior was exemplary
and they represented their
school and the Lummi Nation with pride.

New NWIC building dedicated to
tribal environmental research
The Salish Sea Research Center will be fully
operational by July 1

This summer, Northwest Indian College (NWIC)
will open a new $2.2 million building on its main

research capabilities at
the college to new heights.
With the new building,
students and faculty will
be able to conduct environmental research that supports healthy, clean, and
vibrant environments that
sustain tribal people.
The new 4,200-squarefoot building was aptly
named the Salish Sea Research Center. The Salish
Sea has sustained tribes
along its coast for centuries, and now research at
NWIC will help support the
health of the Salish Sea’s
waters and shorelines.
“While the name of the
center contains ‘Salish Sea,’
we are by no means exclusively marine focused. We
are also laying the groundwork for an outdoor teaching and research program
for native plants on campus,” said Dr. Marco Hatch,
Associate Director of the
National Indian Center
for Marine Environmental
Research and Education
(NICMERE), which is located on NWIC’s campus.

research in all programs of
study – particularly the college’s Bachelor of Science

Lummi Food Sovereignty gets a big boost
The Northwest Indian College project was awarded
a $65,000 grant by ConAgra Foods Foundation

Food sovereignty is
a topic that is being discussed more and more
in Indian Country these
days – we can’t be sovereign if we can’t control our
food sources. That idea
has prompted Northwest
Indian College’s (NWIC)
Cooperative Extension Department to implement
food sovereignty programs
at two of its reservation
sites: Muckleshoot and
Lummi.
The Muckleshoot project was the first of the two
to launch about four years
ago. From the get go, the
program was popular in the
Muckleshoot community
and received national attention from other tribes,

Last year, motivated by
the success of the Muckleshoot project and requests
from the Lummi community, NWIC launched the
Lummi Food Sovereignty
Project. Now this younger
project is beginning to see

I was sitting patiently,
waiting for my name to be
called as one of the 1200
graduates during the 2013
Washington State University Commencement Ceremony at Beasley Coliseum
in Pullman, WA. To my left,
sitting amongst the 3000
spectators in the stadium
seats were my loving wife
and wonderful kids. Just 13
years ago to the day, I was
one of hundreds to graduate
with my Bachelor of Arts in
Communications and sitting a few rows behind us
who were graduating were
this year’s Bachelor of Arts
in Communications graduates.
While being an
executive at Silver
Reef Hotel Casino
Spa these past six
years, there have
been many times
that we have made
sound business decisions that was best for
our casino property that
perhaps may not have been
met with approval by the
General Council. I know
first-hand that we will not
please everyone or meet
everyone’s approval. I also
know that we are a business, focused on raising
money for the Lummi Nation, cutting costs where we
can and doing whatever we
can to make our business as
efficient as possible.
Have we succeeded
these past 11 years with
President Floyd’s declaration? Yes, we have and is
evident in the fact that we
have expanded five times
since we opened in 2002

were even bicyclers moving
as fast as they could to get

Gabriel Jefferson
Gale “Gabriel” Jefferson, age 79 of
Lummi went to be with Jesus April 23,
2013. He was born July 1, 1933 to David
and Isabelle Barr Jefferson on the Lummi
Reservation. He was the youngest of his
sibling.
He supported his family through logging, working construction, commercial
fishing and was a cook aboard a purse
seiner. He loved swimming, dancing, and
golfing. He enjoyed playing pool, darts,
cards, cribbage, shuffle board and gambling at any casino. He went hunting in
Oregon, Washington and Idaho for deer, elk, moose, duck and
pheasants, often with Charlie and Jim of Oregon; Joe, Gary, Jim
& Mike Taylor of Lapwai, Idaho; and with his buddies, nephews
and son Gabriel in all 3 States. He spent time in Bremerton
visiting and enjoyed going to canoe races with his kids. A favorite past time was taking his kids to the drive-in theater. He and
Marie would travel to yearly events and fairs and no matter where
they went Jewell and baby M would find them. Everyone loved
his spaghetti, smoked salmon, turkey and barbecued oysters. His
family was very important to him and he held all family gatherings
at his house. He was very fond of his lawn mower and used any
excuse to ride it; he would ride up to his kids’ houses and offer
to mow their grass for twenty dollars. If you happened to stop by
for a visit he most likely would be watching a John Wayne movie
or some sort of western and would of course offer you something
to eat. He and Marilyn frequented garage sales, auctions, and
antique shops. He was known as Dad/Pa, Grandpa/Papa, Uncle
and Cousin to many and welcomed all into his home. He will be

Jefferson and Cindy Warbus.
Rose worked for the Lummi Health Clinic as a Medical Records Clerk for 20 plus years. She grew up learning to knit socks,
hats, and sweaters from her mother. She spent many of her earlier years fishing with her brothers on the Nooksack River. Rose
is best known for her wonderful sense of humor and having the
greatest love for all of her friends and family.
He was married three times. 1). Rena Lane, their children
Karen & Levi; 2). Reatha Mae, their children Avery, Barbara,
Sandra, Sharon, Karen, Yvonne, Dewey, Joni, Andrea, Alan
(Patrick), Adrian &Teresa; and 3). Marie Phare, their children
Lillian, Gail, Jewell, Evelyn & Gabriel. He spent the last twenty
years with Marilyn McDougal, step daughter Randi.
He was preceded in death by his parents David and Isabelle
Barr Jefferson, his wife Reatha Jefferson, his brothers Jim, David, Tom, Doug and his twin brother Mike (Dale) Jefferson, His
sister Evelyn Jefferson. Children: Marie Tuney-Oats, Charlett
Tupper, Terry Charles, and Nikki Jo Moore. Grandsons: Levi Jefferson Jr., Anthony Jefferson & David Jefferson. Granddaughters:
Natasha Phair & Gabrielle Jefferson.

Albert Bruce Hillaire
Albert Bruce Hillaire, a Lummi Nation fisherman and diver,
passed away May 9. He was born March 1, 1966 to Richard Hillaire II and Phyllis Miller. He joined the U.S. Army after high
school, serving three tours including Operation Desert Shield.
When he returned to Lummi, he proudly followed his ancestors in
harvesting the open sea.
Hillaire is survived by his children Justin, Taylor, Mikko and
Kiera; stepchildren Krista Kern, Devin Bynum and Bryce Bynum;
sisters Valdeen Lambert and Doreen Vargas; brothers Richard
III, Elden and Rodney; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Matthew,
Kellee, Delton and Andrew; and stepson Michael.

running for Position 5 of the Ferndale City Council and desire the
continued positive connection between the Lummi Nation and the
City of Ferndale for the next generations to come. Some of the
Lummi Nation may remember me recording the Blackhawk and
Wolfpack footballs games. I have work with the LIBC twice in
the communications department. Another Lummi Nation experience was being part of the Paddle to Lummi, pulling from Port
Hardy down the Inside Passage past Vancouver Island on the way
back home to the Lummi Nation shores. I pulled the following
year and recorded the traditional story of how the Lummi People
would travel the Inside Passage for trade and potlatch from an
elder storyteller as he shared of the historical routes the Lummi
People as they traveled throughout the Salish Seas. My experiences with the Lummi Nation have grown to an understanding of
the culture.
