2015 Annual Report - Lummi Island Heritage Trust
AnnuAl RepoRt 2015 Preserving the Nature of Lummi Island Highlights of 2015 “The future depends on what you do today.” Mahatma Ghandi As I reflect on the past year, I am in awe of Lummi Island Heritage Trust. This small organization is doing big things today, with our eyes on the future. We believe the future depends on people connecting with, learning about, and appreciating our natural world. During the past year, Nature Explorer kids enthusiastically took to the forests, ponds and beaches to learn about the island’s native plants and critters. Adults were not far behind counting frogs, salamanders and newts, classifying mushrooms and lichens, learning bird songs, prowling for owls, and growing organic vegetables and fruit. We love this island and we value learning about it and caring for it. The Heritage Trust finalized a private conservation easement that protects 125 acres from development and ensures that an expanse of forest and wetlands on the north end of the island are permanently protected. We began work with another private landowner who wishes to protect the extensive wetlands on their 23 acre property. The crowning moment this past year was when we successfully negotiated the acquisition of the Lummi Island quarry property and launched the Aiston Preserve Campaign. Perhaps the most ambitious undertaking in the Heritage Trust’s 18 year history, the Aiston Preserve project will restore degraded land and shoreline and develop public access at this extraordinary property. See more details about this remarkable project on page 7. The future of Lummi Island is being shaped by how each of us responds to the opportunities we have today to protect the forest, fields, wetlands and shorelines of this precious island. Please join us in Preserving the Nature of Lummi Island for future generations of plants, wildlife and people – forever. Rebecca Rettmer, Executive Director 2 Cover photos and this page: Victor Burgett 2015 was a marvelous year of community outreach, engaged members, active volunteers, land stewardship, citizen science, and saving land. With new projects already underway, 2016 promises to be an exciting time be a part of this vital organization. Trillium Rebecca Rettmer at the Heritage Trust office, 360-758-7997. If you have already included the Heritage Trust in your estate plans, please let us know so that we can thank you during your lifetime. The places on Lummi Island that you help preserve today will be your legacy that is passed on. One way to ensure the future of those places is by making a planned gift. A planned gift is a way for anyone to make a significant gift during their life that will impact land conservation on Lummi Island after their lifetime and for generations to come. Heritage Circle The following individuals have included the Heritage Trust in their estate plans. Their legacy gifts will help us preserve land on Lummi Island in perpetuity. We are deeply grateful. In the spirit of a lasting legacy, we gratefully celebrate people who have included the Trust in their estate plans as members of our Heritage Circle. Planned gifts are not only for people with a lot of wealth, and can take many forms that will help you address your personal and financial goals. Photo by Bert Sagara The Aiston Preserve Campaign Permanently Protect – Restore – Develop Public Access 105 acres with deep, mossy forests 4,000 feet of rocky shoreline and pocket beaches Smugglers Cove with eelgrass beds and critical tidal habitat Following two years of research and negotiations, the Heritage Trust purchased the Lummi Island quarry property, which was in receivership and marketed for expanded mining and residential development. The acquisition was only possible due to bridge loan financing from a group of generous donors. Once we raise the funds needed to finish the acquisition, we will have the chance to re-vegetate the mined area, restore the shoreline where it is damaged, and create a unique nature preserve with broad and permanent community benefits. The total cost to acquire the property, restore it, and develop public access will be $2,950,000. Grants $2,180,000 $1,340,000 raised Private $770,000 $840,000 pending $394,000 raised $376,000 needed The Heritage Trust must raise $376,000 by June 30, 2016. Your donation today will finalize the acquisition and allow us to move forward with restoration and start planning for public access to the Aiston Preserve. Please make a generous donation today.
