1 2 LETTER FROM THE VICAR Dear brothers and sisters in Christ, Christian giving & Stewardship, Theological Education & Service, Pastoral Ministry, Developing Human Resources are the topics for the meditation of the month of July. Our God given life becomes glorified on the basis of how you live only. The central point of Stewardship is our faithfulness in dealing the given life and its responsibilities and obligations, according to the will of God. It is quite natural that we are giving importance for some thing and not giving importance for others. We should be faithful in dealing silly things also. Our faithfulness in life reveals through our activities. The quality of stewarship is more clear in our action of givings. Giving our earnings for the building up of the kingdom of God is considered as a commission of God. The church ( People of God) are called to learn the lesson of stewardship through the event which our Lord Jesus recognised the poor widow as the true giver who gave all that she had out of her poverty. It shows her deep and immense love to God. Using our money, talents and all our possessions only for the glorification of the name of God according to the will of God can be said as stewardship. It may not be a refusal of the usage of our wealth for our own needs. Where as we must choose our own needs, which are useful only for the glorification of the name of God and to make the justice of God more active. The thoughts of all other needs should be rejected. Hence stewardship can be said as "a mind setting". Gospel of prosperity is, today's, more popular trend. For the people who like the gospel of prosperity faith is only a mean to make them as much rich and to run their life smoothly without any problems. Nowadays this kind of trend itself stand as obstruction for a scientific study of theology. We will be able to bring the message of the word of God in to practice only through a well study of it. Pasturing His people is the agenda of our God. Partaking this agenda is pastoral ministry. The people who are called by God only can partake the pastoral ministry. These meditations may make us more faithful in life. . Rev. Jacob John Mullackal Vicar 3 PARISH BULLETIN JUNE 2013 ALMANAC OF AUGUST 2013 02.08.2013 11th Week After Pentecost Exodus 24:12-18 24:12 2Peter 1:12-21 1:12 “The The Transfiguration of Christ” Christ Psalm. 110:1-7 St. Luke. 9:28 9:28-36 04.08.2013 11th Sunday After Pentecost Exodus 24:12-18 24:12 2Peter 1:12-21 1:12 “The The Transfiguration of Christ” Christ Psalm. 110:1-7 St. Luke. 9:28 9:28-36 09.08.2013 12th Week After Pentecost Genesis 7:1-16 7:1 Acts 2:36 2:36-47 “Fellowship” Psalm. CHANDU MENON JOSEPH FENN Mr. Chandu Menon (1778-1837) is the man credited for helping with the translation of the Bible from English to Malayalam. Menon was born in Chunangad village (to a known Hindu family) near Ottapalam town of British Malabar. He lost his mother when he was very young and was brought up by his uncle who taught him martial arts. After that he moved to Madras and continued his education and became an employee of the Madras Revenue Department. Later, he became a tutor of the Travancore Divan Mannadiyar Raman Menon, after which he became the Tahasildar of Chengannur. Chandu Menon married Parvathiamma of Pulivelil House in Aala, a village near Chengannur Town. Chandu Menon was an expert in Malayalam, English and Sanskrit. While he was working as the Kottayam Tahasildar, he befriended Rev. Benjamin Baily, missionary of the Church Mission Society (CMS). Rev. Baily was in need of a person like Chandu Menon to help him translate the Bible from English to Malayalam. Moved by Baily’s request, Chandu took leave from the Travancore Government Service and joined back after two years, completing the translation work in 1819. The Bible translation transformed his life and he accepted Jesus as his personal Saviour. On 2 November, 1831, he was baptized in the Anglican Church in Calicut and was given the name Joseph Fenn. Later members of his family were also baptized. Chandu Menon had to resign from his government job as Travancore Rules dictated that “non Hindus were not allowed to hold the post of Tahasildar". However, he joined the British Government Service and worked as a ‘Salt Peshkar' (one who maintains accounts of the State) in Ponnani, Record Keeper in Calicut; and District Munsif in Cochin. He passed away in 1837 at the age of 57 and was buried in St. Francis Anglican Church, Cochin. Benefits of prayer 15 The Bible is composed of 66 books. There are 39 books in the Old Testament and 27 in the New Testament. Some 39 or 40 men had a part in the writing of the Bible, from Moses to the apostle John. It took over 1500 years to produce the Bible. Out of all the men who wrote the books of the Bible, Luke "the beloved physician" (Col. 4:14) was the only Gentile. He penned the gospel of Luke and the book of Acts. The first section of the Old Testament is called the Pentateuch. It contains the first five books of the Bible (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy). These books, written by Moses, cover the period of time from Creation to the death of Moses, just prior to the entrance of God's people into the Promised Land. The Old Testament contains twelve books of history, from Joshua through Esther. There are five books of poetry: Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song of Solomon. There are five books of the Major Prophets: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations, Ezekiel and Daniel. There are 12 Minor Prophets, from Hosea through Malachi. The New Testament contains four gospels (Matthew, Mark, Luke and John), each telling the story of the life of Christ from different viewpoints. The New Testament has one book of history, the book of Acts, which tells of the establishment of the church and the growth of Christianity in the first century. It also has 21 epistles, the majority of which were written by the apostle Paul (Romans through Jude) and one book of prophecy (the Revelation), penned by John while on the isle of Patmos. The Old Testament was written in Hebrew (with the exception of Daniel 2:4b-7:28 and Ezra 4:8-6:18). The New Testament was written in Greek. The Catholic Bible contains seven extra books: Tobias, Judith, Wisdom, Ecclesiasticus, Baruch, First and Second Maccabees, plus additional parts in the books of Esther and Daniel. These Apocryphal books are not accepted by the protestants. F A C T S A B O U T T H E B I B L E 16 Wise Words on Failure "Anyone who has never made a mistake has never tried anything new." Albert Einstein To be successful we need to begin, without taking the first steps there can be no success. Many people do not begin because they fear mistakes. Welcome mistakes, learn from them and then you will ensure you do not make the same mistake again. Did you set your goal so that you would fail? NO. Success was the only option then, and is the only option now. Success is the proper utilization of failure. Every failure is a learning experience. A successful person will analyze their failures with smart questions such as: • • • • How can I do it better? What mistakes did I make? What did I learn from this? What can I do differently to ensure success? By identifying the causes of failure, you can start again with more confidence and knowledge. Every failure will bring you closer to success. "A man is not finished when he is defeated. He is finished when he quits." Richard Nixon The difference between successful people and unsuccessful people is failure. You can only fail if you stop trying. You must continue trying in order to succeed. "Success is going from failure to failure without a loss of enthusiasm." Sir Winston Churchill "Many of life's failures are men who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up." Thomas Edison When you have put effort into achieving your dreams you must keep going. There is no crystal ball; success could be right around the corner. You owe it to yourself to keep trying. The worst punishment in life is to look back and wonder "what if...." “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and He will establish your plans” Proverbs 16:3 17 BIBLE QUIZ BASED ON THE BOOK OF GENESIS 1) What was the name of the son of Adam and Eve who was given to replace Abel? 2) Who was the oldest man in the Bible and how many years did he live? 3) How many times was the dove sent out of the ark? 4) Who was called a mighty hunter in Genesis? 5) Who was king of Salem and priest of God Most High? 6) What did Abraham purchase in order to bury Sarah? 7) What bird was first sent from the Ark? 8) From what place did Abram and Terah depart as they went to the land of Canaan? 9) Which son did Jacob say was unstable as water and would not excel? 10)Who asked the first qn in the bible 11)Name first person who died as per the bible 12)Which was first city constructed by man 13)In Genesis who were the 2 persons walked with God 14)Name of the bird first mentioned in bible 15)Who was known as wild donkey of a man 16)Who is like a ravenous wolf 17)How old was Noah when flood came up on the earth 18)Whom did Pharaoh called by the name ‘Zaphnath-paaneah’ 18 l¢b¢´¡c¤¾ Ab¢J¡j« L¢j¢ ±dg¡nX·¢v ©im¤ dsº¤: “c¢¹w ....... l¢b¢´yY® .” Fɤ¨J¡Ù¡X® c¡« h¨×¡j¡¨q l¢b¢´y¨Y¼¤ dsº¢j¢´¤¼Y®?
