His possessions were not on the scale of William Byrd's or Benjamin Harrison's, whose records are frequently seen on this film, but I believe the listing will be interesting and informative to many of our readers. The name Hardyman suffered a spelling change when part of the line sojourned in Tennessee, and appears in the early history of Texas as Hardeman. In The Hardeman Impact on Early Texas History by Francis W. Wilson, M.D., page 90 contains a skeleton outline of a branch of the family (showing Littlebury to be a son of Francis and Henrietta Maria (Taylor) Hardpan), and refers to "A paper dated 1771 - Sales of the estate of Capt. Littlebury Hardernan conducted under the authority of Susanna Hardeman, executrix of the will of her husband". Their children and spouses are listed, but no clue to their ages at the time the following inventory was taken. Susanna's maiden name was thought to be Lightfoot. To Ascertain Valuations: Figuring 20 shillings to the pound, take an easy example: 8 Young Hogs @ 4 shillings each = 32 shillings = 1 pound 12 shillings. There were 12 pence to the shilling - I'll leave that to your pocket calculator! I believe their penny was the equivalent of 2q American. 2/6 (called "two and six") refers to shillings and pence, not pounds. This reckoning and the following editorial suggestions are based on my selfeducated guesses. PLEASE point out any errors I make so I can disabuse the minds of our readership when I have misled them. I'd really like to know myself! page 403 Hardyman's Inventory &c. 4 P "In obedience to an Order of the Worshipful1 Court of Charles City We the [long dash to fill line] Subscribers being first Sworn, have appraised in Current Money the Estate of Littlebury Hardyrnan deceased November 20th 1771. 59 head of Cattle 7 year old Do [ditto] 77 Sheep 17 Geese 28 old Hogs 8 young Hogs 1 Bay Horse, Starn 1 Bay Mare and Colt, Bathy White 1 Bay Mare, Fuglar 1 Bay Stallion Partner 1 Bay one eyed Mare and Colt 1 Bay Mare 2 Years old 1 Black Mare Colt 1 Black Horse Colt @ @ @ @ @ 30/ lo/ 7/6 1/3 15/ @ 4/ [named for Bathsheba White?] 37 f88.10.0 3.10.0 28. 7.6 1. 1.3 21. 0.0 1.12.0 10. 0.0 15.. 0.0 10. 0.0 50. 0.0 15. 0.0 10. 0.0 7. 0.0 10. 0.0 AGS Quarterly .VoleXXX No. 2 Austin TX 0 $15. 0.0 1 Mahogany Desk and Book Case 1 Black-Walnut Ditto 10. 0.0 1.10.0 1 Maple Desk 2 Mahogany Tables @ 60/ 6. 0.0 1 Do Tea Table 0,15.0 1 Dozen black Walnut Chairs @ 10/ 6. 0.0 2 Arm Ditto @ 15/ 1.10.0 5 Pictures @ 3/ 0.15.0 2 Images [portraits? religious statues? ? ? ] 0. 1.3 China Tea ware and Tea Board [tray?] 1.10.0 10 Silver Tea Spoons and [sugar?] Tongs 1.13.0 1 Doz. DEFENDERS OF THE REPUBLIC OF TEXAS, Volume I, Texas Army,@ 1989, Daughters of the Republic of Texas, Inc. Published by Laurel House Press. Box 27667. Austin TX 78755.- Paper, 8% x 11", 320 pages, illustrations, full-name-index. Price $16.95 plus $2 for shipping & handling; Texas residents add $1.19 tax. * B) *-,, Texas Arm is the first volume of a trilogy, the other two (pertaining to the Texas Militia to be available in the S m e r of 1989. The product of painstaking abstracting and computer composition by Mary Lou Mitchell and Janet M. Shannon, with Karen R. Thompson as Managing Editor, this book is an extremely valuable contribution to Texans and Texophiles. Volume I details the military service of more than 1100 soldiers in the Volunteer Army of the Republic of Texas between 1836 and 1841 as seen in records found in Texas'State Archives. These include 133 Texas Army muster rolls and payroll records never before published, revealing names and ranks of enlisted men and noncommissioned officers, date and place of enlistment, duty assignments, promotions, desertions, and deaths. The Introduction, "Army of the Republic of Texas" by Dr. Thomas W. Cutrer of Texas State Historical Association, is an extremely informative exposition of the factors governing the army and the part it played in the history of the Republic. It explains the reasons for changing the makeup of the army from time to time; disciplinary and maintenance problems; difficulties in recruiting; rivalry among the leaders; and, finally, the financial troubles that led to the disbanding of the army. Like the Program Notes on a theater program, this article sets the scene, while the bulk of the book is like an elaborate "Cast of Characters" in the drama whose run ended so long ago. Archivist Tony Black of the Archives Division of Texas State Library describes legislation pertaining to the formation and maintenance of the. Army; the provenance of records set forth in this book, and the relief awarded to each honorably discharged soldier when the army was disbanded late in 1841. An interesting map drawn by Barbara Whitehead locates forts, camps, posts, stations and towns mentioned in the records, while drawings by Betsy Warren depict weapons and other articles of a soldier's 11equipage." Also scattered throughout are reproductions of some of the military forms that were used (as well as broadsides, etc.), which are interesting to examine. Their page numbers appear at the end of the Table of Contents, which is cornendably detailed. Consideration for the reader's convenience is evidenced by sections entitled "Getting the Most Out of This Book" and "Quick Page Reference Guide," both of which explain the material the researchers had to abstract from and how they set up their summaries of the records. The format used is a marvel of neat condensation of material from frequently differing forms - most ingenious! The compilers boast that they nobly refrained from using the ditto marks of the original records, but it seems a waste of time to spell out a long sentence 14 times per page, when one announcement would have suf- 47 V n l , XXX AGS Quarterly No. 7 Austin TX ficed. They also standardized date styles, choosing the form 12/24/1839. That's fine if you have a 13 or higher number involved, but 12/10 is open to misinterpretation, for some writers prefer month first and others the opposite. I believe the modern army uses the sequence day-month-year, as do most genealogical forms (printed). A three-letter abbreviation (24 Dec 1839) reauires onlv one more stroke, and averts errors on the part of'those who forge; just whiih is the eighth month ! The general appearance of Texas Arm is very pleasing, with generous margins, off-white paper, and legible though rather small) typeface. However, I'm a bit dubious about the durability of the cover when subjected to frequent use and copying, as in a library. But the only major criticism this reviewer wishes to register about this really fine piece of work is of the index. In many instances, names are out of alphabetical order, and frequently there are multiple listings of the same name. Perhaps the compilers are trying to tell us that they think there were three David Davises, but I feel that such a decision should be made by the reader. In the present fo~m,a reader might well overlook the redundant entries; all page numbers should follow the original listing of the name. The composer of the index rendered service "above and beyond" in fumishing variant spellings in italics, but not infrequently the spelling shehe gave precedence to is not the one most often seen in previous books about early Texans. It is hoped that the compilers of the succeeding indexes will have time to do more comparative research in this area. These minor annoyances notwithstanding, this reviewer whole-heartedly recommends Texas Army (subtitled Muster Rolls, Receipt Rolls and Other Rolls, 18361841) to those who are seeking ancestors who were in Texas during this period, t o military buffs, and to those who are interested in Texas history in general. A great many of these men became prominent in the affairs of the State of Texas in later years, + ABSTRACTS OF PARKER COUNTY, TEXAS, PRE-EMPTION LAND RECORDS, 1850-1858, compiled by Jerry Wright Jordan, 1988. 212 pp., maps, full-name index, paper, $15. Order # 5355 from Herita e Books, 1540-E Pointer Ridge Place, Suite 300, Bowie MD 20716. Shipping: $2. 0 per order. 5 Abstracts of Parker County, Texas, Pre-emption Land Records, 1850-1858 opens with a brief history of the formation of the county, supplemented with a petition therefor (Appendix I) and the 1855 Act creating it (Appendix 11). That history is followed by a succinct and, it appears to this reviewer, accurate account of the chronology and nature of land grants in Texas. The different classes of headriggs, bounty warrants, donation and pre-emption grants are defined, as well as th equirements for each category, which should be beneficial to almost anyone studying early Texas land records. [It might be mentioned that Jerry Jordan overlooked one group eligible. for donation grants: Men who served under Fannin at or near Goliad, about 60 of whom escaped massacre; heirs of the others were awarded donation certificates.3 W. [Ms? One never knows with a name like Jerry!] Jordan establishes credibility for the book with a thorough description of the records being abstracted from, which are .currently housed in a regional branch of Texas State Ar. .- 48 AGS Quarterly n . V n l , XXX No. 3 A u s t i n TX chives at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas. Five exceptionally clear maps of Parker County and itsdsurroundings enhance the value of-the book. But in the Introduction, the compiler affects a device that is, to me, at least, rather annoying: inserting an accent mark pointing towards the x of the word "Bexar." This reviewer feels that it would have been better to spell the name phonetically at its first appearance, then stick to the normal "Bexar" or ( 1Bejar" thereafter. We can be grateful to the author for mercifully sparing us the tedious distances cited in these pre-emption records (except those pertaining to a nearby town), and for including waterways, neighbors, chain bearers, and witnesses. The abstracts themselves show meticulous attention to the original instrument as far as proper names are concerned, but he/she did not impede the reader's research by slavishly copying all the misspelled words, which serve as red flags to some of us readers. Human names are in all caps (a true boon to the researcher) and variations in spelling are underlined. In the Index, variations are placed in alphaIf I may betical sequence in one entry, as "JAMES0N/JAM1S0N/JEIclAS0N/J1M1S0N." insert an opinion [Who can stop me?], I submit that "J.H. Csop" on page 185 was the same man as J.H. Crop and J.H. Cross--that old double s that looks like a p or f. I advise readers to examine the index line by line and check the data. for such probablgvariations as Burrip, E. and Burris, Elias; Cancliffe and Cuncliff, Wm. H.; Dodions and Dodson; Dyche and Dyeke, A.J.; Edwards and Ewards, gas. C.; Harris and Horris, Edward M.; Ladgsdon, Lodgson and Logsdon; Magers and Mayors, Seton; Wilson and Wison, Wm. P. In fact, examination of the index leads one to the conclusion that the clerk was as weak in orthography as he was in calligraphy! Abbreviations are virtually consistent and appropriate throughout. Interpretation problems notwithstanding, this book of Parker County land records is a really fine source for those interested in survey records pertaining to said county in the 1850s, namely the Land Districts of Milam, Robertson and Denton. The names of 225 legal voters of Tarrant County are an unexpected dividend. Legibility is another factor that inclines your reviewer to recommend this worthy book to your attention. LYNNfiINN LINEAGE QUARTERLY, Phyllis J. Bauer, Editor, 3312 W. Fairway Dr., McHenry IL 60050. 8% x ll", ca 30 pages per issue, $18 per calendar year in the us, Canada & Mexico. Back issues $5 each, postpaid. Queries free to subscribers. I* 4) ?he pearl-gray cover of this quarterly boasts an extremely attractive device never before seen by this reviewer. A stylized tree (artistically drawn by the editor's .brother,Lee Werhan) changes its appearance with the seasons: first delicately leaved for the Spring issue, in full leaf for Summer, surrounded by drifting and fallen leaves for Fall, it consists only of exquisitely branched bare limbs and twigs in the Winter, but retains the identical oval-topped outline throughout the year. Besides delighting the eye, this clever format enables the reader to select the desired issue at a glance. .. - 49 AGS Quarterly Vol. XXX No. 2 Austin TX Bauer sent us the four numbers issued in 1987 to be reviewed. They contain a wide variety of material: Lynn/Linn Revolutionary War Pension Claims [How fortunate she is to have Jo White Linn as an interested contributor!]; Lynns in Ayrshire; individual family groups in Virginia, North Carolina, Maryland , Illinois, Ohio, etc.; Quaker Lynn/Linns; census records; War of 1812 records; bounty land records, and so on. Every conceivable variant spelling of the name is included in the records that are presented: Lin, Lind, Lines, Linnes, Lyne, Lynde, ad infinitum! There are book reviews, queries, and lengthy, informal accounts of family traditions. In the first issue the editor set an example for her readers by printing her own Ahnentafel and Family Group Sheets. This feature proved so popular that she decided not to publish them in the regular magazine but save them for a Special Issue. She now offers over 100 pages of Lynn/Linn group and pedigree charts at $12 for non-subscribers and $10 for subscribers. The publication is on good heavy paper, neatly typed or computed, although some pages have so many names in a l l caps that it makes your head swim t o glance at them. When any device employed for emphasis is overused, nothing stands out on the page. ?he index, in the Number 4 issue each year, is disappointing in that only the Lynn/Linn section includes first names, but there are only seven Smiths, for exm l e . so most index searchers have few blind allevs to 20 down. Lynn/Linn Lineage Quarterly is far above rnost on:-name publications this. reviewer has seen, and I only wish someone would do as well by each surname now being researched. .especially mine! After a short stay on the New Books shelf, these quarterlies will be placed in the Vertical File in the Genealogy Collection of Texas State Library., Rrs. L , FAMILIES OF WYOMING C O O , WV edited by Sally Williams, Ancestor Seminars Libr, 418 Hwy. 110 North, Whitehouse TX 75791. Soft cover, stapled, ca 30 pages per issue, 8% x ll", $10 per volume, published February, May, August and November. Devoting a publication to the families of a certain county makes it seem so much more personal! Many serials are dedicated to the records of a particular area and that is probably more helpful than limiting it to one surname "anywhere." In this way, the researcher gets more information about the families of spouses. All queries are free, but MUST pertain to Wyoming County, West Virginia. It is not our policy to give publicity to books without a review copy, or to serials without a year's run, but your editor wants to encourage the publication of records (especially personal) pertaining to a specific area with input from subscribers. Family records from Bibles, diaries, personal correspondence and so on are seldom found in books but may clear up a long line for others. The issue at hand (Volume 3 Issue 3, February 1989) contains ancestor charts, index t o marriages, the complete 1900 census of a town, cemeteries, history of a church, photographs, advertising. And, wonder of wonders, there is a full-name index in each issue! What a tremendous investment of time! Now if the editor will just learn that there is no such word as "zerox,'I I can recormend this quarterly unreservedly to those who have interests in this region. [P.S. A delightful blooper noticed in this issue occurs in a letter to the editor which she apparently did not retype, so can hardly be blamed for. The writer refers to her "material great-grandparents,'I Does she also have immaterial ancestors?] 50 4 AGS Quarterly No, 7 Vnl- A DELI- Austin 'TX GLIMPSE OF IWE = 0 C A m I C ARCHIVlS OF TEXAS On Saturday afternoon, 29 April 1989, members of AGS were treated to a conducted tour of the Roman Catholic Chancery building at 1600 North Congress Avenue in Austin. Our generous and witty guide, Michael E. Zilligen, showered us with information about the vast store of material in the Archives, and entertained us with glimpses of artifacts such as home cornunion sets; beautiful bishops' robes and accouterments (ranging from croziers to antiquated red silk stockings and gold shoes); and photographs and letters from prominent men. One very interesting display consists of 24 identical dolls, each dressed in a miniature replica of a different order of nuns that at some time has had sisters devoting their lives to good works in Texas, such as conducting schools and hospitals. In 1982, this collection of rare dolls and meticulously detailed habits provided Pearl R. Casne with the subject for her Master of Arts thesis at UT-Austin. Archivist Zilligen stated that 57 bishops have served Texas, and the Archives include a more or less voluminous file for each. Files on priests, usually including birth and death dates, show where they served -3when enabling a searcher to track down a family tradition that "Father Murphy baptized the whole family, but we don't know where.'I Michael Zilligen reiterated the statement he made at AGS meeting in February, that they are expecting to have records from all 14 dioceses on microfilm here in about five years. These will include records pertaining to Baptism, Confirmation, Marriage, reception of Holy Comunion, and Death or Extreme Unction (the sacrament of the sick). Already filmed are records of the Diocese ofAustin (stretching from Mason County east to Brazos, from Hamilton south to Caldwell and Austin counties), and the Diocese of Brownsville (Cameron, Willacy, Hidalgo and Starr counties). It is expected that by midsummer the Diocese of Victoria will be completed (DeWitt and Goliad on the west, Matagorda farthest east, parts of Fayette and Colorado to the north, Calhoun on the south). No church rites except Roman Catholic were permitted to early settlers while Texas was under the soverignty of Spain, France and Mexico, so genealogical researchers sometimes find marriage and burial records of their erstwhile Protestant ancestors in these archives. We are grateful to the Chancery for allowing non-Catholics to use them. C a l l (512) 476-4888 to ask Michael about appropriate times to avail yourself of this great source for research. [Incidentally, Mr. Zilligen is among the elite few who pronounce the word dioceses" with ease. It never ceases to amaze me that, I suppose because we tend to say "diosis", even some hi h church dignitaries call it "dioseize" -- presumably following the format of 'thesis - theses".] We welcome Archivist Zilligen to the Board of Directors of Austin Gznealogical Society, and hail the return of Wilena Young, who was recently honored with a AGS 'life membership in appreciation of her faithful service as editor of the Newsletter. AGS member Evelyn Farris Wolf informs us that there is a computerized index of 15,000 persons buried in Bastrop County. The cemetery survey committee, consisting of Audrey Rother, Evelyn Wolf, Clyde Reynolds and Clifford Zearfoss, has surveyed some 80% of the burial sites in the county to date. The master name index and the cemetery surveys may be found in two places: (1) the County Clerk's Office, Attention County Cemetery Surveys, Bastrop TX 78602 (copies $1 per page); or t 2 ) the Bastrop City Library, where visitors can make copies at a reduced price. Evelyn also sent a tip for those desiring research done German Research: in the Eastern Bloc countries, where American Express money orders are not acceptable. She writes that when she sent cash to a person in East Germany, her letters were not delivered. It seems that incoming mail is x-rayed and cash is detected, but that when she wrapped the bills in carbon paper, her letters were received by the person who had done the research. 62 ~ 0 LISTING A " I R Pedi j r e e Chart of: Prepared by: SEICTION YOUNG, W i l l i a m Anderson (Father of Ruth Young Crowson) Ruth (Young) Crowson 7613 Shoal Creek Elvd. Baker Austin, Texas. * I was born in Noxubee Co. Ms. on the 20th day of May, 1843. My father moved to Newton Co. Ms. in 1853. I was in my 17th year when mustered in the Service at Corinth, Ms. about the last of April or first of May 1861 don't remember the exact dates. I belonged to Co. I 20th Ms. Regiment, never belonged to but one Co (Company) and Regiment, was placed in Gen. Floyd's Brigade in North West Virginia. Gen. R. E. Lee, Commander of that department all fall, was at Abbigton Court House. Christmas day the Brigade was ordered to reinforce the Western Army, then later part of Jan. 62 got to Fort Donaldson, Tn. on the 12th of Feb.62 and was surrendered the 16th. Was only there three days was wounded in left side on morning of the 16th in the second charge but did not stop from going, was surrendered that night about 12. Oct. the coldest time that any lot of boys experienced. Got to Camp Donlas, Chicage, 11. the morning of the 22 about 2 'Oclock was turned loose behind the walls like a lot of horses, the snow was about lmee deep, was several days before they got us quarters, was exchanged at Vixburg(Vicksburg, M s ) on the 8th day of Sept. 1862,sent to payrol (parole) camp for ten days;was put in Tightman's Brigade which was composed of the 6th, 14th, 15th, 20th and 26th Ms. Regiment9 and placed in W, W. Loving's%vision, "Uncle Billel' as we boys called him. This human was killed at Baker's Creek. Loving's Division cut its way out 6 fell back to Jackson, M s . there John C. Adams took Com. (command) of Brigade and did not go in to Virhurg with Pemberton. Gen, Joe E. Johnson was sent there with more troops, thought they could relieve Pemberton out of Vixburg. I was promoted to Sargent on that compaign for outrunning a company of cavalry. Some was promoted for bravery but I was promoted for running. The winding of that compaign was forced back to Demopolis, Al. went from there to Dalton, Ga. was with Gen. Jos. E. Johnson in all the fights down to Atlanta, then he was relieved and Gen. John B. Hood placed in command, went with Hood back to Dalton, across North Georgia b Alabama to Tuscombia, Al. from there up into Tn. was wounded at Franklin, Tn. I thought it was good-bye John that time but I soon got over it. General Adams was killed at Franklin, he b horse falling over in the works, a braver man never lived. General Lannerry ( ? ) commanded brigade until close of war, was surrendered at Greenbriar N.C. on the 26th day of April 65. Came home with Gen. Lannery brought my gun, cartridge box and 1000 rounds amunition; got home on the 17th day of June 65 demoralized, I am ---- and badly -----. Went to work with nothing, country all t o m up but that did not keep boys and girls from marrying. Married N O ~ .7, 1866 came to Texas in the Fall of 69, lived in Bastrop two years moved to Travis in 72. I am a Babist(Baptist) in faith and a Mason. I commenced the dairy business at Austin in 1879, sold out four years ago (1913). We raised three sons and three daughters all grown. My wife and self are here for some purpose, I know not what for, we are east Austin and Travis. Signed J. S. Pannell This 31st day of &iy 1917. Editor's Note: From his biography (#35) in Military Records of General Officers of the Confederate States of America, I believe this was Gen. William Wing LORING. "This human'' must refer to someone else, as Loring died in New York City in 1886. Camp Douglas Gen. John Clifford Pemberton - Gen. was a Union prisoner-of-war camp near Chicago.
