The level of entries that we received again this year was higher and more focused than ever before. Our judging is done as a process of elimination, so portfolios are removed from each round depending on their strength as a potential winner. The final rounds of portfolios, from photographers at Institutions like Pathshala, Newport, Westminster, LCC, Falmouth, Missouri, Barcelona, Ohio, Danish School of Journalism and Tisch NY, showed such flair and extraordinary vision that the judges found it difficult to select just 3 finalists. The judges felt that the over all winner had to be Sebastian Liste from Spain for his powerful black & white story titled URBAN QUILOMBO, which documents the lives of 60 homeless families occupying the "Galpão da Araújo Barreto”, an abandoned chocolate factory in Salvador de Bahia, Brazil. Don McCullin Patron says “This is a very moving story. You have to have more than just ability as a photographer but also have fluency in your story. It’s important not to create just a set of individual pictures. If the images work together we get a much more informative picture of what's going on in the world; photography such as this, deeply engages with issues” We would like to thank our judges for their clear decision-making and expertise: Don McCullin Patron / Jon Levy Publisher Foto8 / Marcus Bleasdale VII IPS Winner 2000 / Jon Jones Director of Photography Sunday Times magazine / Steve Blogg Getty Images and Ian’s family Charles and John. “The standard and ambition of the entries challenge me to live up to the expectations of tomorrow's photographers. Each year the IPS sets a high standard for achieving this endeavor, it acts as a call to all editors to work harder and look more widely to recognise and award talented photojournalists today” Jon Levy Foto8. 1 “The IPS is a unique chance for emerging photojournalists to not only have their work assessed and circulated within the wider context of the professional photographic industry but also published in a major national newspaper. Entering awards has now become the most effective way to showcase your work and I would encourage more students to invest in this kind of free promotion” Rebecca McClelland Deputy Director IPS. “Sebastian Liste’s work is of the highest standard for such a young photographer” Jon Jones of the Sunday Times magazine. Save The Children are again sponsoring the award by offering one of the finalists an all expenses paid assignment under the management of Rachel Palmer Film & Photography Manager and in addition to this, the World Press Photo automatically accepts the winner onto its final list of nominees for the Joop Swart Masterclass in Amsterdam. This is a significant prize for any photographer and continued with the support of Getty Images, Canon Europe & Sunday Times Magazine, which publishes all the finalist’s work; the scholarship provides an excellent launch into a professional career in photography. Once again our extremely well attended exhibition will be held at the Getty Images Gallery / 46 Eastcastle Street, London, W1W 8DX / Telephone: +44 (0) 20 7291 5380 from the 16th August for one week.
