The Glenorchy City Council won the Young Legends National Award for its Glenorchy Youth Task Force, Benjafield Childcare Centre, Waste Management Schools Program, and Rosetta Primary School. Council was also highly commended for Environmental Sustainability for its Derwent Stormwater Reuse project and highly commended in the Heritage and Culture category for the Moonah Arts Centre. The awards were accepted by Mayor Kristie Johnston and follow Glenorchy being named Tasmania’s sustainable city in the annual KAB Tasmania Awards, where the Council, local community groups and community members received a total of 15 state awards. Mayor Johnston said the award success was a proud moment for Glenorchy and she commended all those who had contributed to the achievement. “As KAB reported, Glenorchy has a strong commitment to sustainability and to involving and consulting with our community, particularly our youth, and we are delighted this commitment has been given such important recognition,” she said. General Manager Peter Brooks said the national recognition for the efforts of Council staff and projects was particularly pleasing. “Our Youth Taskforce is doing fantastic work and thoroughly deserves its award, while the Derwent Park Stormwater Harvesting and Industrial Reuse project will save some 476 megalitres of water a year, and the Moonah Arts Centre demonstrates the best in environmentally CONTINUES PAGE 2 From left, Len Yeats, Glenorchy Mayor Kristie Johnston and Gary Swanston at the Keep Australia Beautiful (KAB) National Sustainable Awards. If you are attending Christmas and New Year parties, ensure you tell someone where you are going and who you are with. Tasting other people’s beverages can make it difficult to know exactly what you are drinking and how much alcohol you are consuming. Keep an eye on your drink and your friend’s drinks - take turns to go dancing or finish your drinks first. Keep your valuables out of sight or where you can see and reach them, especially mobile phones and wallets. Take your handbags or wallets onto the dance floor and check you still have them when you sit down. If you feel strange, tell a friend and leave with people you trust. When leaving premises intoxicated, be careful on the footpath and roads and watch out for each other - pedestrians are easily injured leaving parties or hotels when judgement of space and timing are impaired. Avoid getting into heated discussions alcohol or illicit drugs affect logical and rational thoughts. If a friend is seriously affected by alcohol or illicit drugs or has overdosed, call an ambulance immediately. Glenorchy Safer Communities Committee A Christmas message Police message with Acting Inspector Craig Joel Glenorchy Police Division HOW quickly Christmas has come around this year. It feels like only a few months ago we were enjoying the fine song and dance at the 2014 Glenorchy Carols by Candlelight. And now the 2015 spectacular – and the arrival of Santa Claus – is only a few weeks away. From all the staff, past and present, at the Glenorchy Police Station, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of the northern suburbs community a safe and happy Christmas and New Year. It takes a team effort to provide policing services across the Glenorchy Police Division, which extends as far as Granton in the north and Lutana in the south, and this year has been no exception. We have worked closely with our business partners and volunteer organisations to provide an effective service that makes our community a safer, inclusive and secure place to live, work and visit with friends and family. This festive season the police will be out and about in the major commercial precincts like Glenorchy, Moonah and Claremont, keeping an eye on the shops, clubs and the parks. We will also be patrolling the suburbs and catching up with those drivers who are inattentive or who drink and drive. Our new technology means we can respond more quickly and cover a lot more ground than ever before. Make sure you lock up before you go out and do not leave the Christmas goodies on the back seat of the car. Make a plan to get home if you have a few drinks and respect the company of friends and strangers alike. If you are going away, let the neighbours know to bring in the paper and check the mailbox. Finally, if you see something that’s not quite right, call us (000) or Crimestoppers (phone 1800 333 000) if you want to remain anonymous. Finally, we all know how dry and cold it has been this winter so it is important that residents in bushland areas are not complacent. Check the Tasmania Fire Service website for updates and tips, and have a Bushfire Survival Plan – go to www.fire.tas. gov.au for more information. Tasmania Police is committed to making the northern suburbs a safer place to live, visit and do business, and we look forward to working alongside you in 2016. Merry Christmas. THE Glenorchy School for Seniors is calling on new members to join its dynamic adult education group. Held at the Masonic Hall in Glenorchy, the group meets every Wednesday from 10am to 12pm. Chairperson Sylvia Hart said the Glenorchy School for Seniors provided the opportunity for older people to enjoy guest speaker sessions and interactive activities. “The Glenorchy School for Seniors gives people the chance to socialise in an informal setting,” she said. “There are no structured lessons, exams and we do not sit at desks. “Instead we explore a wide range of issues and topics in a friendly and accessible environment.” The Glenorchy School for Seniors operates over three terms for $26 per annum, but people can join anytime during a term with pro-rata rates available. The Glenorchy School for Seniors is run by a committee and is currently supported by Adult Education Tasmania. For more information about the Glenorchy School for Seniors or for enrolments contact the Glenorchy LINC on contact phone 6165 5493. GLENORCHY residents and businesses are invited to “dig deep” to help those in the community who may be struggling to find Christmas cheer. The Glenorchy City Council’s Anglicare Christmas Giving Tree will be located in the Council foyer until Thursday 17 December and donations of unwrapped gifts and non-perishable food items are welcomed. The donated items will be distributed by Anglicare to disadvantaged families and individuals of all ages in time for Christmas. The Council Giving Tree has become an annual tradition, and is generously supported by the Glenorchy Lions and Leos which provide cash, toy donations and Lions Christmas cakes and puddings. Glenorchy Mayor Kristie Johnston and Glenorchy Lions and Leos representatives will present the donations to Anglicare staff at 10.30am on Thursday 17 December in the Council foyer. Members of Bowen Road Primary School Choir preparing for the Glenorchy Carols by Candlelight at Tolosa Park on Saturday 12 December. GLENORCHY City Council, along with event partners the Lions Club of Glenorchy, has announced an exciting line up for its 2015 Carols by Candlelight. The free, ticketless event will be held on Saturday 12 December at Tolosa Park. Traditionally held on the second Saturday in December, this year’s Carols will feature specially commissioned children’s entertainment with a humorous Christmas story staged by popular Hobart performers, Big Monkey Theatre Company, courtesy of new event sponsors, YMCA Hobart. Spokespeople and co- chairs of the Glenorchy Carols Organising Committee Steve King and David Pearce said they had responded to patron requests to refresh the children’s entertainment section. “Many patrons will be familiar with the Big Monkey Theatre Company’s wonderful Botanical Garden’s summer family shows,” they said. “The same musical humour will be present in this special children’s section on the night with Big Monkey taking on a twist on a popular Danish Christmas tale. “All we can tell you without spoiling the story, is that only an appear- ance by Santa can save Christmas.” Ald King and Ald Pearce said the event would be hosted by ABC Breakfast presenter Ryk Goddard and young upcoming vocalist Régan Schmidt. “Ryk is the master of firing up a large audience – so our traditional emphasis on getting everyone up and singing is going to make this a really memorable night,” they said. Appearing on stage and among the audience will be a host of well-known local choirs including the Choir of High Hopes, Vivace Young Voices, Bowen Road Primary School, Dominic College Choir, Hobart Barbershop Men’s A’capella, Hobart Women’s Harmony and Ta Daa Entertainment. Glenorchy Carols’ regulars the Glenorchy City Concert Brass, as well as the Tasmanian Song Company and Nicole Rosson Dancers, will also be there this year. “Together this line up of spectacular local talent will spread the joy of Christmas with the full complement of Christmas carols,” Ald King and Ald Pearce said. Glenorchy Carols by Candlelight is a popular family tradition with organisers encouraging a relaxed family feel with room to enjoy a picnic, and plenty of onsite parking. The event will be held on Saturday 12 December at Tolosa Park with gates opening at 6pm for a 7.30pm start and will conclude at 10pm. A free shuttles bus will be available, leaving from the Glenorchy Bus Interchange from 6.30pm and returning after the last carol. Carols by Candlelight is a free community event developed by the Lions Club of Glenorchy and Glenorchy City Council, with major sponsor YMCA Hobart. Management and Staff would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Safe and Happy New Year. Tasmania’s must see gourmet experience Glenorchy Gazette December 2015 5 COMMUNITY NEWS Springing in a field Memoranda of Understanding for of fresh produce Tasmanian councils A SIGNIFICANT step towards achieving better outcomes for ratepayers by improving the efficiency and effectiveness of local government has been taken, says Treasurer Peter Gutwein. Two Memoranda of Understanding (MoU) were signed in November for studies to examine options for voluntary amalgamation and strategic shared services for Greater Hobart Councils and South East Councils. The council areas are made up of Greater Hobart Councils (Hobart City, Clarence City, Glenorchy City and Kingborough Councils), South East Councils (Clarence City, Sorell, Glamorgan-Spring Bay) and Tasman Councils including a subset of options: • Clarence City, Sorell and Tasman Councils • Sorell and Tasman Councils; and Students at Springfield Gardens Primary School have learnt lifelong kitchen and cooking skills through the MONA 24 Carrot Kitchen Garden program. SPRINGFIELD Gardens Primary School is one of the latest schools to challenge the green thumbs of its students by establishing a successful kitchen garden as part of MONA’s 24 Carrot Garden Program. Aligned with the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation, the program seeks to establish the gold standard of school kitchen gardens, partnering fun with learning activities such as the culinary arts, science and sustainability. Approximately 175 students in grades threeto-six participated in weekly garden lessons, as well as 225 students in grades two to six who tested their skills in the kitchen with fortnightly cooking lessons. Throughout 2014, the kitchen garden was planned and planted and now, nearly 12-months on, the students are beginning to see the fruits of their labour. Speaker for the House of Assembly Elise Archer was recently invited to tour the school’s Kitchen Garden and lend a hand in the cooking lessons. She said it was amazing to think that only 12-months ago the gardens were just a vacant patch at the front of the school. “Now they are full of fresh fruit and vegetables ready for the kids to cook with in recipes such as soup and pizza,” she said. “The school has certainly done a wonderful job with the program and I am tipping that there are some very talented budding chefs among the students to watch out for in years to come. “I have been a strong supporter of the kitchen garden concept and will be lobbying hard to find some assistance with funding.” Do you need a Licence Truck / Security Forklift & More 1300 732 377 www.onroadoffroad.com.au RTO Number 60071 • Sorell, Glamorgan Spring Bay and Tasman Councils. “I want to congratulate all those who have been involved in the process to date for the mature contribution they have made to the debate,” Mr Gutwein said. “Looking more broadly across the state, it is anticipated that all eight northern councils and all nine Cradle Coast councils will submit proposals for funding to investigate comprehensive shared service arrangements for their respective regions. “This work is well underway and I encourage the North and North Western councils to finalise their proposals as quickly as possible.” Mr Gutwein said to progress the MoUs, proposals with shared services must incorporate initiatives that involved significant Kimberley’s Pet Taxi & Pet Services VERY AFFORDABLE •Pet feeding •Dog boarding in our family homes •House sitting •Dog walking •Pet taxi and pet care For all your holiday and anytime pet care needs call the Pet Care Specialists Small hobby farms cared for and domestic pets Kimberley’s Pet Taxi & Pet Services 0428 568 852 www.pettaxi.net.au Invite you to a Where: 353 Main Road Glenorchy When: Friday 11th December Time: 12.30-3.00pm RSVP ESSENTIAL: Monday 7th December, 6212 2383 scott.bacon@parliament.tas.gov.au Responsibility for all election comment in this edition is taken by Nicolas Turner, Level 2, 152 Macquarie Street, Hobart, Tasmania, 7000. GLENORCHY City Council once again recognised the value of Children’s Week this year with a special awards ceremony held at the Moonah Arts Centre on 29 October. Presented by Alderman Jenny Branch-Allen, the awards recognised individuals who made a significant contribution to improving the health and wellbeing of children, as well as those who had significantly enhanced their learning opportunities. This year’s event included six recipients who each received an award for their long-standing work in the Glenorchy community. Award winners were Cathy Leppard from Tiny Tackers Children’s Centre, Tanya Castle-Phillips from the West Moonah Community House, Chris Lewinski and Leah McKenzie from Austins Ferry Primary School and John Ploughman and Elizabeth Piesse from Holy Rosary Primary School. In addition, the children at both Child Care Connections services were awarded participation certificates for their involvement in the consultation of “what I like about outside spaces” and the art work development for “The Big Fridge” art exhibition. Held at the Moonah Arts Centre, ‘Moonah Mini Makers’ is a five-week arts program aimed at fostering creativity in young children up to five years of age. Workshop coordinator Josie Chapman said the main question she was asked was: “is my child old enough?” She said it very much depended on what the parent was hoping to get out of the art activities. “Babies and young children under 18-months might not make a well resolved art piece ready for your grandmas Christmas gift, but there are many outcomes you can come to expect,” she said. “These include the development of fine motor skills, sensory development, visual literacy and just having the opportunity to be exposed to different materials. “As parents and educators, it’s really important that we understand that our art-making as babies, children and even adults is about the process and not the outcome. “Sometimes as we play and explore different mediums we can produce interesting, unexpected and truly creative artwork outcomes.” Over the five-week workshop, babies and children will receive the chance to engage with 41 different activities and view 50 pieces of artwork. Each week will include a different theme with several activities set up around the room for parents to explore with their child. Participant Georgia Hurst has been attending the workshop with her nine-month-old-son, Hugo Jackson. “I’m loving the workshops because as a firsttime mum I’m learning new ways to engage with my child,” she said. “Just like the occasions when we have read a book together, the workshop gives us a bonding experience to share and I can see that it is helping him to master his developmental skills.” Mini Moonah Makers is being held for five-weeks from Thursday 19 November at the Moonah Arts Centre, 23 Albert Road, Moonah. Photo credit: Petbarn. WITH thousands of pets without a home this Christmas, Petbarn Derwent Park is calling on local residents to get behind two of The Pet Foundation’s Christmas fundraising initiatives that aim to raise more than $400,000 for local animal shelters and pet-related causes this year. The Pet Foundation, which is the charitable arm of Petbarn and Greencross Vets, was established by Australia’s leading pet care company, Greencross Group Limited, to actively support pet welfare programs. For the first time, The Pet Foundation is selling a unique Christmas Advent Calendar specifically for pets through Petbarn stores with all profits from sales going towards animal charities in need. The calendar comes with two healthy yoghurt drops per day for your furry friend which are also safe for human consumption. The calendars are on sale in store for $12.88. In addition, Petbarn Derwent Park has kicked off its annual Christmas Giving Tree Appeal in which pet lovers can purchase either a $3, $5 or $10 Christmas tree decoration which comes in two parts - one to hang on the Petbarn Derwent Park Giving Tree and one to take home for their own family Christmas tree. Petbarn Derwent Park store manager Kylie Midson said these two fundraising initiatives were a great and easy way for locals to show their support. “Pets bring happiness and joy into our lives each day, they make us laugh and even help us stay active, so what better way to celebrate them this Christmas than by giving back to those pets in need,” she said. “Importantly, profits from these initiatives will go towards helping local animal shelters and rescue groups, so that they can continue to do the great work they do. Some of these charities include RSPCA, Cat Haven, Lort Smith, Cat Corner, Pet Haven Foundation, just to name a few. “The holiday gift giving period is a very busy time for the shelters and buying a Christmas decoration from our Petbarn Derwent Park Giving Tree or purchasing a Christmas advent calendar for your pet is a simple way to show your support.” The Pet Foundation is dedicated to providing support for animal rescue organisations and ensuring every animal has a loving place to call home. Since launching in 2012, the Foundation has raised more than $2.5 million for local animal charities. Petbarn Derwent Park is located at 62 -64 Derwent Park Road, Derwent Park. GLENORCHY City Council has joined thousands of householders, community organisations and businesses across Australia by participating in the Garage Sale Trail. Council recently organised a Makers, Creaters and Retro Recyclers group event at the Moonah Arts Centre in October, which featured 11 different stalls. The event aimed to showcase the creative talents of artists and makers in Glenorchy, as well as promote the theme of reuse and recycling. Glenorchy Mayor Kristie Johnson said the council was pleased to be able to bring the Garage Sale Trail to Glenorchy again this year. She said it was also great to see participation in the event increasing. “There were 59 registered sales throughout Glenorchy, which is almost double last year’s total,” she said. “Not only does the event offer the opportunity for people to reuse and recycle items that may otherwise end up in landfills, it also creates important social connections and brings communities together.” This year marked the fifth anniversary of the award-winning community and sustainability event, with more than 8,000 registered participants across the country. Photo credit: Sean Fenessy. TASMANIA’S most popular and enduring summer celebration, The Taste of Tasmania, will be trialling a cashless system during this year’s event, which returns to Hobart’s waterfront from 28 December 2015 to 3 January 2016. When ordering food or drinks patrons can simply use their own EFTPOS debit or credit cards to tap, swipe or insert into stalls’ EFTPOS tablets. There will also be Taste prepaid cards available for families with children who are not old enough to have their own EFTPOS card, that are free to collect and load with cash once on site. This year’s free event will once again offer a wide range of cuisine to suit all tastebuds and budgets, from the freshest seafood and berries to artisan Tasmanian beverages and interna- tional dishes with a local flavour. Event spokesperson Damon Thomas said every year The Taste of Tasmania put a show on to remember and this year was no exception. “This year the nightly entertainment features The Black Sorrows, The Audreys, Tasmania’s Southern Gospel Choir and Stonefield all freeof-charge on the main stage,” he said. “With more than 100 performances on offer, including some exciting buskers and roving circus-style entertainers, there will be something to appeal to everyone. “We are particularly proud to be able to showcase some wonderful local talent.” Ald Thomas said there would also be great fun for families in the “Kids in the Park” space on Parliament House Lawns, which included an outdoor twilight cinema and free creative and sporting activities. “A free family-focused New Year’s Eve program provides a great lead-up to the early fireworks session at 9.30pm,” he said. “Our New Year’s Eve Party at Princes Wharf 1 is a funk and soulthemed ticketed event featuring The Hobart Funk Collective and eight-piece big band, The Bamboos and a spectacular fireworks display at midnight.” Ald Thomas said The Taste of Tasmania was much more than a food festival. “It brings the whole community together to celebrate our casual and relaxed lifestyle and provides the perfect venue to catch up with family and friends,” he said. QUIck clUes DISC of the month: Mad Men: Season 7 Part 2 It’s time to bid farewell to the team at the New York advertising agency that’s had as many takeovers, mergers and name changes as hotshot ad man Don Draper has one-night stands. Well, maybe not that many! In the last seven episodes of a split final season, Sterling Cooper & Price are absorbed by global ad giant McCann Erickson, which leaves the core characters – Don, Roger, Peggy, Joan and Pete – at odds with the new office dynamic. Don, in particular, can’t abide boardroom pitches by committee and hits the road to find a waitress he’s become obsessed with, which ultimately turns into the journey to self-discovery this conflicted guy has needed since we first met him. Jon Hamm finally received a well-deserved and belated Emmy this year for his portrayal of one of TV’s most fascinating alpha males, and fittingly, it’s Don Draper who is the primary focus of the final episodes. That’s not to say the others don’t receive a suitable send-off – chain-smoking finally catches up with one of the characters in the form of terminal lung cancer; an unexpected romance blooms; and new and exciting opportunities await some of our favourite employees, all of whom deserve some kind of happiness – including Don. And it’s not a spoiler to reveal that the final episode will leave you with a smile on your face, and wanting a Coke. We’ll miss the sixties’ decor and fashions, the rampant smoking, drinking, sexism, crazy campaigns, silver fox Roger, and Don’s womanising ways. But most of all we’ll miss one of the most stylish and memorable series on TV. Article written by Scott Hocking for STACK Magazine and DVD released by Universal Sony Pictures. Game of the month: Uncharted: The Nathan Drake Collection With a little over four months to go until the release of Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, dipping into The Nathan Drake Collection to whet the old adventurous appetite is the perfect horsd’oeuvre. So how does this remastered ternion stand up? Surprisingly well. Drake’s Fortune, a game now eight years old, is the obvious weak link here. But furnished with 1080p presentation and 60fps where possible, even this entry in the compelling Nathan Drake saga, looks mightily impressive. The characters, scenery, and the explosion effects have all been markedly improved, as have the controls that greatly benefit from being tightened. Subtle additions to the gameplay, such as implementing features used in the later games, works exceptionally well. Among Thieves holds up well and by the time Drake’s Deceptionmakes an appearance, it’s hard to believe that this trilogy actually released on PS3. It doesn’t matter whether you’ve played them before or it’s your first time to the franchise, Naughty Dog’s excellent adventure series deserves this new-gen interpretation. Sit back and enjoy playing through the evolution of one of the greatest series released on the PlayStation 3. Article written by Alesha Kolbe for STACK Magazine and game released by by Sony Computer Entertainment. Album of the month: Divers; Joanna Newsom Like a stimulative tonic, Joanna Newsom’s fourth full-length album Divers prompts both soft introspection and wild fancies. It looks for answers to love’s questions in all manner of hidey-holes and vistas without ever wandering so far that Newsom gets lost – an enormous feat, considering the turf she traverses. While medieval clavichords are softened by jangling Americana guitar and gentle rimshots in Leaving The City, Goose Eggs sees tom-booming drums fling themselves forward like a Tori Amos hit. Piano accordion, flute, piccolo, various woodwind, violins, tiny electronic elements and the artist’s own harp curl together in this astonishingly dynamic collection, and while these instruments are all doing their own discrete things, they frolick together; Newsom and her arrangers are able to arouse them into living characters like creatures in a Miyazaki film or Peter And The Wolf, and they’re all playing this ring-a-rosy with the artist’s voice. Newsom’s vocals are, of course, full of contrary temper: quietly intricate vowels skitter around her goal notes, and all the while she utilises her fearless cache of vibrato, cutesy curls and Joni Mitchell caws. She has drawn on all of her previous releases to deliver this record, which expressively and sensitively explores the caverns hiding life’s little profundities. Photo Credit: Carolyn Docking Gawain Simpson, of Claremont, was awarded first place in the humorous category of the Area M20 Speech Contest. Photo credit: Carolyn Docking TWO northern suburb residents filled their glasses and put on their best public speaking voices recently as they showcased their mastery of toastmaking at the annual Area M20 Speech Contest. Held at Hotel Soho on Saturday 7 November, Rodney Tattam, of Austins Ferry, and Gawain Simpson, of Claremont, joined fellow “Toastmasters” from across Tasmania to battle it out for the opportunity to climb the ranks and represent Australia at the world championships. Area director Kate Gray said the contest showcased the best speakers in Tasmania with winners advancing to the next level of contest, which would be held in Melbourne next year. “This is an exciting day for both contestants and spectators,” she said. “Contestants have worked really hard on their public speaking skills to get to this point and have already competed at club level.” Mr Tattam said he joined Toastmasters five-years-ago following a desire to undertake some public speaking. “I wanted to learn from experienced and confident speakers,” he said. “I love attending meetings because of the diversity of people and how their stories are always interesting and engaging. “I often comment on how I learn something new every night from others’ experiences and presentations.” Mr Simpson, joined the Toastmasters 11-years ago to improve his communication after a suggestion from his boss at the time. Mr Simpson has since gone on to achieve one of the highest rewards of ‘distinguished toastmaster’. “My biggest challenge also turned out to be my biggest highlight,” he said. “I gave a 45-minute workshop on humour for speeches on the 2010 District 73 Convention and ended up with 127 people in the audience, which was more than I expected.” This year’s Area M20 contest included four categories – table topics, evaluation, humorous and international. Mr Simpson was awarded first prize in the hunourous and international contests, as well as third prize in evaluation. Mr Tattam scored third prize in the humourous category. Ms Gray said the contestants in the international category could now advance for a chance to compete at an international level. “It is a tough competition but there have been several Australians to win at the worldc in past years, so it would be great to see one of our Tasmanians reach that level,” she said. For more information about Toastmasters, visit www.toastmasters.org. YOU may think that because winter has ended, you no longer need to worry about heating. However, the team at Sustainable Living Tasmania (SLT) has recommended that the state’s milder months are the best time to upgrade heating thanks to a special deal. SLT has pooled the community’s purchasing power to secure a discounted price on quality heat pumps. SLT partnerships manager Michele Matthews said this meant you could also keep cool in summer. “With our community bulk buy heat pumps have never been cheaper and generous subsidies are available for eligible low income households,” she said. “This means that you could get a quality 6kW heat pump for less than $1,000. “Because of demand we have extended the program until 15 Decem- ber 2015.” Ms Matthews said as SLT had visited and helped more than 4,000 households with their energy bills in the last few years, the organisation was well-informed about home heating in Tasmania. “We have found that the most appropriate type of heater for a household depends on many things including the house design and construction, and the occupants’ need,” she said. “They recommend heat pumps in the majority of cases, and wood heaters in some circumstances. “Other heaters are too inefficient and costly to run.” Ms Matthews said heat pumps were unique in that heat was pumped in the air from outside to inside the home. “This allows heat pumps to achieve efficiencies at least three times greater than any other type of heater,” she said. “Heat pumps start at the push of a button, can be easily programmed to come on before you get up, and can provide cooling on hot summer days.” For more information on SLT’s Community Heat Pump Bulk Buy and low income subsidies go www.slt.org.au/bulk_buy Heat pumps – the smart and cheaper choice = SUBSIDIES AVAILABLE With our community bulk buy heat pumps have never been cheaper. The project is currently running about two months behind the previously announced program, which had construction starting in late October 2015. Member for Elwick Adriana Taylor recently voiced her concerns about the project delay to the Minister for Infrastructure, Rene Hidding, in Parliament. “Like many other local residents, I was concerned at the lack of action visible for the promised works to realign Elwick Road and Goodwood Road intersections with the Brooker Highway,” she said. “However, during Parliament the Minister assured me that the additional time taken was well within the normal range for a project of this scale and complexity. “He also said that the project team was making every effort to catch up this time, while not compromising the quality of review of tenders and ensuring the final contract For Celebrating Christmas we have it covered 6249 1100 666 Main Road BERRIEDALE E: granada.tavern@alhgroup.com.au W: www.granadatavern.com.au details were accurate and appropriate.” Ms Taylor said she had been informed that the project tender had closed and it was expected that the successful tenderer would be announced before Christmas. “Work crews in that area in recent months have been relocating TasNetworks and TasGas assets ahead of the main road works,” she said. “The Department of State Growth has also assured me that further information will be provided to residents and businesses in the area before works start, as well as during construction.” Ms Taylor said there were a number of factors that contributed to the works’ delay. “These factors included refinements and improvements to the tender documentation in order to manage project risks, Glenorchy City Council requests for additional time to review the application for planning permit, ongoing work with the Tasmanian Racing Club and ongoing negotiations with the Royal Agricultural Society of Tasmania regarding Crown Land currently leased to them.” Glenorchy Gazette December 2015 15 COMMUNITY NEWS A journey recognised at Corumbene Skills Training Australia strategy and development manager Matt Rowe, Corumbene’s leisure and lifestyle coordinator Barb Davis and leisure and lifestyle assistant Narelle Jones at the Diversional Therapy Australia National Conference 2015. Image supplied. THE Village at Corumbene has received a National Award for Excellence at the Conference for Diversional Therapy Australia, which was recently held in Queensland. The accolade was presented to the lifestyle village for its “My Journey Program”. The “intergenerational volunteer initiative” involved the collation of Corumbene community members’ life stories that could be preserved for friends, family and in the close knit community in the Derwent Valley. Corumbene’s leisure and lifestyle coordinator and volunteers coordinator Barbara Davis, who was the recipient of the award on behalf of Corumbene, said she was overwhelmed by the recognition of the program. “We have a small amount of dedicated volunteers facilitating the program for both residents of Corumbene and our greater elder community within the Derwent Valley and Central Highlands,” she said. “Our staff, volunteers and community organisations and schools must be commended for their amazing support.” Beryl Burns was one Corumbene resident involved in the My Journey initiative. “My family is very proud to have me included in this program,” Mrs Burns said. “It is something my children can always look back on.” Corumbene chief executive officer Damien Jacobs said he was thrilled with the recognition at a national level. “The program, which was developed by a combined effort of ‘Friends of Corumbene’ volunteers and local school children has significantly increased the benefits to our elder community with a far greater impact than was anticipated,” he said. “The My Journey Program has been operating for 18 months and receiving this accolade against a national cohort of much larger and in many cases, better resourced organisations, is an outstanding achievement.” The Village at Corumbene, located at Lower Road New Norfolk, will be holding an open day on Saturday 5 December from 9am to 5pm. AROUND 80 per cent of vehicle child restraints are fitted incorrectly, the RACT says. It is a key reason why the organisation has officially launched an educational DVD for parents, grandparents and professionals who work with young families that demonstrates the correct way to install a child restraint. The DVD, officially launched in the maternity ward of the Hobart Private Hospital which will use it in ante-natal classes as an educational resource, highlights common mistakes made when fitting a child restraint in a vehicle. The DVD was developed given alarming statistics about the incorrect use (and in some cases non-use) of child restraints in Tasmania. RACT Motoring Services Manager Peter Gillon said the DVD’s production formed part of its commitment to road safety awareness. “The RACT has initiated a Champion Advocacy Project: Reducing Restraint Risk in Tasmania,” he said. “One of the actions was to produce a DVD that is available as an educational resource to better educate the general public.” Hobart Private Hospital general manager John Amery said babies and children were the community’s most important asset. “We are very pleased to see that an organisation like the RACT is taking the matter so seriously, and are very pleased to align our hospital with the DVD and its child and infant safety messages,” he said. “We believe the DVD will be a very valuable tool for parents.” Mr Gillon said the DVD was designed to increase awareness about the important issue, educate and provide practical help to protect the lives of youngsters in cars something that no parent or grandparent should ever take for granted. “The RACT understands that many parents/grandparents find installing a child restraint confusing,” he said. “The DVD was designed to increase awareness, educate and provide practical help to protect the lives of youngsters in cars. “The best possible outcome would be a dramatic improvement in the correct installation and usage of child car restraints. “A correctly fitted child restraint is vital for the safety of children.” TRIXIE BERRY Specialist agent 30 years experience Stress free results Call Trixie Berry for an appraisal of your home 0419 134 330 6232 4999 229 Elizabeth Street, Hobart eisproperty.com.au We’re opening the door to your ideal retirement lifestyle. Presented by the Banksia Foundation, its annual awards recognise and celebrate individual and organisation contributions to sustainability across Australia. Mr McCallum said Mr Ryan’s success as Managing Director and CEO of Tassal had been achieved with a strong focus on sustainability. “Mark has established a pathway for the industry to grow sustainably, which will further benefit the Tasmanian economy and Tassal’s employees,” he said. In 2012 under Mark’s leadership, Tassal partnered with WWF-Australia, part of the world’s largest conservation organisation. The partnership with WWF, along with Mr Ryan’s passion for sustainability, led Tassal to become the first producer of farmed salmon in the world to achieve full Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC) certification across all sites in November 2014. ASC certification is the highest standard for responsibly-farmed seafood in the world and provides credible, third party validation to consumers that they are purchasing seafood from farms that limit impacts on the environment and communities. Mr McCallum said Mr Ryan’s drive to create a sustainable aquaculture operation had been a defining quality that had influenced his leadership style and the attitude of his employees. “Under Mark’s direction, Tassal is demonstrating that industry can be sustainable while taking care of the environment and local regional communities,” he said. “Tassal’s ongoing solid environmental performance gives the company a ‘licence’ to continue to operate. “It secures Tassal’s growth path, and more importantly, jobs into the future, filling a very important economic gap in rural and regional communities in Tasmania.” Get out the lights, tinsel & baubles! GLENORCHY residents are invited to experience “Christmas in the Alps”. But instead of travelling across the world, this Christmas in the Alps will be held at St John’s Catholic Church. On Saturday 5 December, local choir “Meli-Melo Singers” will raise funds for humanitarian aid in Nepal at a special Christmas concert. As part of Christmas in the Alps the group will present an uplifting performance of traditional carols and folk songs from alpine regions of Switzerland, France and beyond, sung in four-part harmony. Led by Swiss-born director René Rime, the choir has been together for around five years and sings in English, French, Italian, Polish and German, with piano and organ accompaniment. “We perform at community events and venues around Hobart, most recently at MONA,” Mr Rime said. “Meli-Melo choir sings for the love of music, and a wish to bring a bit of joy to the world. “We have prepared a beautiful concert this yearnand hope it will inspire everyone who comes to give generously for the good of people in need.” Mr Rime said a highlight would be the Tasmanian premiere of Pierre Kaelin’s very beautiful “Petite Messe pour Noel”, or “little Christmas mass”. “Although sung in Latin, Petite Messe pour Noel is based upon arrangements of carols that will be familiar to most listeners,” he said. “The concert will also feature short pieces for French horn ensemble and a quartet of Swiss Alphorns, uncommonly long instruments used for centuries to communicate across mountainous terrains.” During the Christmas in the Alps event, donations will be accepted Mayor’s Business Christmas Decoration Competition GLENORCHY businesses are encouraged to embrace the festive spirit this year with the inaugural Mayor’s Business Christmas Decoration Competition, which is proudly sponsored by the Glenorchy Gazette. “It is beginning to feel a lot like Christ- mas in Glenorchy,” Glenorchy Mayor Kristie Johnston said. “This competition is a great way to highlight the fact that everything you need for Christmas can be purchased locally. “Small businesses are critical to our local economy and we need to support them.” Mayor Johnston said the Glenorchy Gazette had generously provided a promotions package for first prize. “I hope to see tinsel, lights and baubles from one end of the city to the other,” she said. Dominic College students Brea Knott and Laura Whittaker exchange spells as part of their ‘Badjelly the Witch’ production. ELECTIVE drama students at Dominic College finished off their academic year with a bang when they performed their production of ‘Badjelly the Witch’ to the younger students as part of their children’s theatre studies. Written by English comedian Spike Milligan, the play is about a witch named Badjelly – played alternately by Brea Knott and Laura Whittaker – who can turn children into sausages or chop them up to make boy-girl soup. Known as the wick- edest witch in the world she can also turn policemen into apple trees or bananas into mice. Luckily, she is eventually thwarted by some lost children with the assistance of a great cast of quirky characters. Other production cast members included Allen Glover, Patrick Karsznia, Joshua Russell and Sarah Stansbie. Students said that playing for a younger audience had its own challenges. This included great reactions from the audience that, while appreciated, came as an unexpected surprise for the performers. Other drama performances at Dominic College this year have included the whole school ANZAC centenary production of ‘In Their Own Words’, the year six play ‘Say it Loud’ and the elective dramas annual festival of monologues, ‘Talking Heads’. All productions have taken place in Dominic College’s new performing arts venue, The Oratory Space. YEAR five and six Robotics Club students at Dominic College are on their way to Macquarie University in Sydney for the First Lego League (FLL) national finals after winning the Champion’s Trophy at the regional titles last month. Dominic College hosted the event for five qualifying schools in its new Savio Student Hub. This year’s three-part FLL Challenge was called “TrashTrek” with teams scoring points for their “Robot Game”, their “Project”, and their “FLL Core Values”. Teams had up to 10 participants, with at least one adult coach, who took part by programming an autonomous robot to score points on a themed playing field (Robot Game) and developing a solution to a problem they have identified (Project), all one family. one school. one location. For their TrashTrek Project, Dominic College’s “Waste Warriors” chose the challenge of reducing the rate of landfill of plastic snap lock bags from students’ lunchboxes. The Waste Warriors have been working with Glenorchy City Council and local businesses to find an alternative and better way to deal with snap lock bag disposal. The Robot Game consisted of designing, building and programming a robot to undertake a series of tasks on a custom-built game board, under time and rule constraints. Year six student Tyler Graham said on the day of the competition everyone looked calm. “But we were all nervous,” he said. “First up a judge looked at the Waste Warriors’ robot design to see that it would work and not fall apart during the missions. “Next we did a presentation in front of a judge who seemed amazed with our work.” Tyler said after the presentation the team was tested on FFL’s core values. “Then it was the moment I had been waiting for the whole day, the robot challenge,” he said. “On the practice run everything went as planned and we completed three of the missions and we were very happy with our robot.” “On the second run we were being scored and only made one mistake we were pleased although the practice run did not count towards points. “The third run did not go at all to plan but it was the high score that counted.” Dominic College director of teaching Selina Kinnes thanked students, staff and parents for their support and encouragement of the team, who worked on the Project after school, on Saturdays and public holidays. “Robotics offers a great opportunity for students to learn about innovative technology which is fast becoming a part of our everyday lives,” she said. “In Robotics students learn to program - a key component of the Australian Curriculum in the area of Digital Technologies - but also students learn skills of collaborative problem solving, a 21st Century skill students will need for the future. “Learning robotics is a great way of engaging students in STEM - Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths, and this competition also included Creative Arts in the areas of design and presentation of their project. “We have a queue of younger students waiting to join the Robotics Club next year.” The Waste Warriors will be competing in Sydney on Saturday 5 December. Dominic College celebrates international men’s day MORE than 120 boys and men aged from 11 to 80 years converged at Dominic College recently to celebrate International Men’s Day with a special breakfast. Held on Thursday 19 November, International Men’s Day is celebrated in more than 60 countries across the world and recognises the contributions men make to their community, family and childcare. It also works to highlight the impact of discrimination against men. The Dominic College event brought together boys from year five to 10, male family members, staff and old scholars to share ways to inspire the students to become great men. Dominic College principal Beth Gilligan said the breakfast, in its fourth year, had grown to be a significant occasion for the school’s male students to come together and discuss “the immense contribution male role models have in our community.” “This breakfast aims to showcase for our boys a range of positive and successful men who work to make a real difference,” she said. Previous breakfast speakers have included Dominic College old scholars such as Tasmanian Police commander Anthony Cerritelli, architect Elvio Brianese and actor Andrew Casey. The special guest for this year’s event was Dr Dominic Chan, who was from the class of 2004 and currently practices general medicine at the Royal Hobart Hospital. In his speech, Dr Chan acknowledged how important it was to have good role models and mentors while at school and university. Proceeds from the breakfast were donated to support the work of Don Bosco Technical School for boys and young men in Alafua Samoa. Glenorchy Gazette December 2015 19 COMMUNITY NEWS A simple gesture can make a real difference Just Cuts Glenorchy hairdresser Tracy Duggan volunteered three hours of her time to provide free haircuts for the Salvation Army’s Hair Day. THANK YOU FOR YOUR ONGOING SUPPORT BOB JANE T-MARTS MOONAH: WINNER OF THE RETAIL CATEGORY CLIENTS from Doorways Moonah and The Bridge Centre received a simple but powerful gift when they were treated to a free haircut and style as part of the Salvation Army’s Hair Day. Held at the Salvation Army Corps on Tuesday 3 November, Just Cuts Glenorchy hairdresser Tracy Duggan volunteered three hours of her time and expertise to the cause, as well as a selection of pamper packs for the participants to take home. Salvation Army community development representative Sarah Davidson said a haircut was often a luxury few clients could afford. She said the idea for the event came to her after reading an article about a similar project held in Western Australia named ‘Short, Back and Sidewalks’. “Local barbers provided haircuts for people living on the streets and I thought it was a great SEEN SOMETHING initiative,” she said. “We also have clients who visit The Salvation Army Corps in Moonah on a regular basis, so I thought giving them something practical would be a great help to them.” Over the course of the three hours, nine people took up the opportunity to have their “locks” and beards styled. Ms Davidson said that although the event was a simple idea, it made a “real difference.” “For those who can’t afford a haircut – approximately $30 – it provides a boost of confidence and the belief that others are willing to go out of their way to help them,” she said, “For those providing the service, it’s a chance to give back in a simple yet thoughtful way. “The event was better than expected and all the participants were very happy – one participant was so chuffed he said it was the best haircut he had ever had.” Ms Davidson said based on the event’s success, she planned to organise similar events in the future. “There are so many opportunities to support others with this simple act of kindness,” she said. “Sometimes paying-if-forward isn’t always about giving money, but is instead about giving a bit of time and experience.” Christmas Memory Service Turnbull Family Funerals would like to extend an invitation to all those who have been affected by the loss of a friend or family member to attend a Christmas Memory Service. DOMINIC College year six student, Ursula Harris, donned an apron at her local coffee shop recently to help children in disadvantaged countries receive an education. As part of her role as the 2015 World Education Games (WEG) ambassador, Miss Harris was required to raise support for the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) Schoolin-a-Box program. The program is aimed at providing teachers in disadvantaged countries with a kit that contains everything they need to provide an education for students. On Monday 26 October, Miss Harris joined the manager and staff at Platform 1 in Claremont Village, where every $1 spent on coffee was donated to the cause. Miss Harris said she decided to involve a local coffee shop in her fundraising efforts after a brainstorming session with her mother, Makara. “Mum and I were discussing how I would go about raising the funds and we thought it would be a great idea to involve a local business,” she said. Glenorchy Gazette December 2015 21 COMMUNITY NEWS Launching into the future of rowing Glenorchy Rowing Club volunteers raising funds for a new launching pontoon. MEMBERS of the Glenorchy Rowing Club recently made good use of the successful ‘Dad’s Day Out’ event to raise valuable funds for the replacement of its launching pontoon. By recycling the old pontoon decking, which has been damaged by ferry wash, club members were able to construct raised garden beds to sell during the popular event at Elwick Foreshore in November. Club president Leon Carr said the Glenorchy Rowing Club had a proud history of providing opportunities for local school children to enjoy the water and race competitively, achieving some “impressive results” over the years. He said the replacement of the launching pontoon would work toward improving the rowing facilities available to both old and new members. “The days of rowing have changed and Glenorchy has changed with it,” he said. “In the ‘old days’, rowing crews were very close knit and it was hard for beginners to turn up and join in. “However, nowadays heavy wooden oars have been replaced by light, easily handled carbon fibre and there has been a move from each oarsman having one ‘sweep’ oar to each person having two ‘scull’ oars. “The new range of boats and rowing styles mean that anyone can row with anyone and the club can cater for more individuals who want to come and try the sport.” Mr Carr said the biggest changes the club had seen was the increase in women rowers, as well as the older “masters” now being able to row for recrea- tional purposes. “Glenorchy is a small club where every member is an individual and not just one of a crowd,” he said. “We have a current focus on masters rowing for men and women in a friendly, mixed environment and welcome anyone who would like to come and try out – be it for health, fitness, social interaction or competition.” For more information about the Glenorchy Rowing Club, visit www.glenorchyrowing.com or email glenorchyrowing@gmail. com. Berridale resident named national carer awards finalist BERRIEDALE resident Rick Baron has been selected as a state finalist for the 2015 National Carer Awards in recognition of his selfless contributions as an unpaid carer. Mr Baron was nominated for the award in response to the 21-years of care and stability he has provided to a young woman named Janelle, who has been living with cerebral palsy. Sharing their house happily for many years, Mr Baron said they all had a great time together. “Janelle fits in with the family, she has stability and a place with us,” he said. “We include her in everything we are doing, but she still maintains her independence – we have realised that there are no limits to what she can do.” Mr Baron said that since she moved in, Janelle has had daily opportunities to choose things for herself. “This has included everything from selecting her clothes and activities to helping out on the farm,” he said. “I have even organised for her to take charge of farm equipment on occasions, strapping her into the backhoe so she can control levers to lift and move logs and dirt.” Janelle, who is now in her late 30s and requires 24-hour care, said Rick has been supporting and assisting her to live her life the way she wanted. An immense support in her life at home and in the communi- ty, Janelle said he also pushed her to do things to the best of her ability and that she would always be grateful to him for the impact he has had on her life. Life Without Barrier chief executive officer Claire Robbs said all the award finalists were to be congratulated. “We want to give the community a better understanding of unpaid carers across the county as they have such an important role in the lives of the people they support,” she said. Held at the Montrose Foreshore in November, the event offered a number of fun activities for children and their parents, including damper making, planting seedlings, learning about local endangered species and making toolboxes. Children and their dads also got down and dirty in the mud with a variety of modified sports, such as handball, football and obstacle courses. Families enjoyed a free barbecue cooked by Moonah Rotary and Mr Huff and Puff entertained the children making some crazy balloon creatures. Additional activities included Make Believe face painting, fairy activities, learning new skills with Social Circus Tasmania and having photos taken with super heroes. The Glenorchy Action Interagency Network lent its support to the Glenorchy City Council to host the event. Organisers thanked Putter’s Adventure Golf, Magic Hand Car Wash, Croc’s Play Centre, Woody’s Skate and Play, Glenorchy Ice Skating Rink, AMF Moonah Bowls, Blundstone’s, ZAP Fitness, YMCA, Bunnings and Woolworths Claremont for their event sponsorship. Thanks were also extended to the participating organisations and individuals who donated their time and provided fun activities and giveaways at the event. TFS CAMPFIRE SAFETY MESSAGE What a difference: Before and after images of a gutter-cleaning job completed by Affordable Gutter Clean. THE team at Affordable Gutter Clean is urging the community to be prepared in the lead up to the bushfire season. Affordable Gutter Clean owner Allen Pashai said an accumulation of dry leaves, bark, sticks and other combustible materials in roof gutters could serve as kindling for bushfires during the warmer months. “Fires can spread quickly from the roof gutters of your home to the fascias and roof cavity,” he said. “Having clean roof gutters reduces the risk of a fire spreading throughout your home, which means better protection for you, your possessions and most importantly, your loved ones.” Mr Pashai said using a professional gutter cleaning service could be extremely beneficial. “Some people attempt to save money by climbing on the roof to clean the gutters themselves, but serious injuries can result, especially without the use of safety equipment and training,” he said. “Professional gutter cleaners have ample experience working on ladders and at heights with the necessary safety gear to keep them out of harms way. “While gutter cleaning can be a DIY project, it will most likely take a majority of the afternoon to complete. “Professional gutter cleaners can provide efficient, complete gutter care in two to three hours, saving you an afternoon of hard - and – firefighters call for campfire safety Be campfire safe – the TFS is urging campfire users to “soak it, stir it and soak it again”. FIREFIGHTERS across Tasmania are urging people to be aware of the potential dangers of campfires. “One of the great things about living in Tasmania is that families can just pack up their camping gear, jump in the car and head off,” Tasmania Fire Service (TFS) Chief Officer Gavin Freeman said. “And campfires are an integral part of that getaway tradition. “But it is important to remember a few basic rules when using them.” Mr Freeman said campfires should never be left unattended and should be small and well-contained. “Never light a fire on a ‘Total Fire Ban’ day,” he said. “It is your responsibility to check if any restrictions are in place before you light one. “Obey all signs in national parks and other reserves that may restrict where campfires may be lit. “Remember campfires must always be extinguished with water.” The key campfire safety message from the TFS is “soak it, stir it and soak it again.” “Use water to make sure your fire is completely extinguished,” Mr Freeman said. “Do not use soil. “Fires can still smoulder under soil and can stay hot for more than eight hours.” Mr Freeman said as Tasmania moved into the warmer months, campers should be encouraged to enjoy our beautiful state. “But they should also be aware of their responsibilities,” he said. “Do not let your campfire turn into a bushfire. “Bushfires can lead to significant damage or loss of lives and property.” The TFS’ campfire safety message is part of its wider 2015-16 Bushfire Safety Campaign that commenced in October. Mr Freeman said the campaign was extremely important as unfortunately bushfires were and would continue to be part of the Tasmanian landscape. “The TFS continues to encourage residents in bushfire-prone areas to prepare their properties for the summer, as intense bushfires can strike with little warning,” he said. “It is very important that residents are not complacent. “If you live in or near bushland, you, your family and your home are at risk.” Mr Freeman said it was essential for people staying or living in or near bushland to have a Bushfire Survival Plan, which detailed exactly how to prepare and what action to take if threatened by bushfire. “Writing and practicing a bushfire survival plan will help you think through the actions logically, give you something to refer to and can help control fear and anxiety if a bushfire breaks out nearby,” he said. “Your plan must take into consideration the ages and physical capabilities of everyone in your household, including children and the elderly. “Once a Bushfire Survival Plan is in place, it is important for your family to know what action to take when a bushfire approaches.” For more information about the 2015-16 Bushfire Safety Campaign and to download your Bushfire Survival Plan Booklet visit www.fire.tas. gov.au or free call 1800 000 699. A FINANCIAL MOMENT Glenorchy Gazette December 2015 27 Redundancy and The financial “must-asks” income support before you say “I do” payments • • • • • • • By Hank Jongen (pictured)* REDUNDANCY can be a difficult time, and many will experience it at some point in their career. It is important to be aware about what the Department of Human Services can do to help if this happens to you. After being made redundant, the logical next step for most people is to find work again, and this is one area where the department can provide support. If you are made redundant, the department can provide you with a referral to an employment services provider. This is an important first step to help you find work. In addition there are a range of income support payments available while you look for work or undergo activities, such as study or training, to increase your chances of finding work. These payments include: Newstart Allowance. Parenting Payment. Sickness Allowance. Youth Allowance. Widow Allowance. Austudy. ABSTUDY. It is important to be aware that any payouts received from a former employer may delay the commencement of your income support payment. The “Income Maintenance Period” applies to customers who receive a redundancy payout. This is a legislative requirement and varies in length according to the amount of the payout For example, if you or your partner were made redundant and received a 10-week payout, the department is required to assess your Income Maintenance Period to be 10-weeks. This means you would have to wait 10-weeks until you can receive an income support payment from the department, provided that you meet the usual eligibility criteria for the payment. If you or your partner spend a redundancy payout on expenses such as a holiday, a lump-sum mortgage payment, or lump-sum rent payment, you need to be aware that this does not reduce the Income Maintenance Period. This is why it is important that you spend the payout in a way that will not render you or your partner unable to cover essential costs during the waiting period. However, there are exceptions. If you or your partner spends the payout on expenses that are considered unavoidable or reasonable such as essential repairs to a car or home or essential medical expenses, the department may be able to reduce the waiting period. If your payout is small, you may be eligible for a part payment during the Income Maintenance Period. It is highly recommended that you make contact with the department to have the Income Maintenance Period assessed, even before you or your partner receive a payout, so you can effectively plan ahead. The department can also provide assistance by linking you or your partner with employment services providers, social workers, and financial information service officers. For more information about redundancy and income support payments visit www. humanservices.gov.au/ jobseekers and click on the “retrenched or redundant” tab. *Hank Jongen is the Department of Human Servcies general manager. Brighton Mayor Tony Foster said a quick review of the past year highlighted the work of Council to build a better Brighton for now and the future. He said Brighton was continuing to lead Tasmania in keeping down rate increases, developing the municipality and meeting the needs of the community. “A particular highlight of our past year’s effort is the Brighton Tomorrow project,” Mayor Foster said. “The first phase of this project included extensive study of the public spaces in the municipality, in depth public consultation and the preparation of a series of concept designs. “We undertook this in partnership with architecture students from Monash University and the University of Tasmania and Brighton received a million dollars’ worth of consultancy expertise for a fraction of the cost. The initial project received a fantastic response and next year will see us identify priority projects, costings and detailed design work, as well as develop an implementation plan. “In another important community project at the former Brighton Army camp, the Brighton Remembrance Park was successfully established and hosted the ANZAC and Remembrance Day commemorations this year. “As well, the first phase of restoration of the old army camp hospital was completed under a unique 5 by 5 by 5 project which upskills local unemployed people, giving them building and heritage skills and knowledge.” The next two stages of the project will be undertaken in 2016, again as part of the “5 by 5 by 5” project, developing a valuable community space in the former hospital building and also providing young trainees, who otherwise would have difficulty in finding work, important ‘job ready’ skills, as well as an understanding of our local heritage. Mayor Foster said Brighton had successfully implemented its interim planning scheme and was one of the first two Tasmanian Councils to introduce this much-needed reform. “Brighton has long had a reputation of responding promptly to planning applications and issues and this ensures that we continue to be at the forefront in this important area of local government responsibility,” he said. “The past year has also seen a major increase in professional services hours Brighton has provided for other councils, generating valuable income and assisting us to operate as cost effectively as possible. “Brighton has also been prominent in the establishment of a common services joint venture with other like-minded Councils and this is already providing significant savings for ratepayers.” Mayor Foster said while all this had been going on, the council had not neglected the other basics of roads, bridges, footpaths and the full range of local government services. “This is just a snapshot of the work undertaken during the past year, but it demonstrates how Brighton Council has got on with the job of serving its ratepayers and community,” he said. Glenview residents dressed as Christmas presents during the 2014 Hobart Christmas Pageant. GLENVIEW Community Services is preparing for another busy festive season, with residents, families, community groups and schools all coming together to celebrate the Christmas period. Kicking off the festivities, Glenview residents took the Hobart Christmas Pageant by storm in November, converting their buses into delicious looking gingerbread houses. Glenview chief executive officer Lucy O’Flaherty said celebrations continued with a Christmas market day, with local businesses and craftspeople invited to display and sell their goods. “This event gave residents, clients, families and staff a wonderful opportunity to get some Christmas shopping done without leaving the building,” she said. “Due to popular demand, Glenview is again creating a Christmas Grotto, taking over the board room and transforming it into a magical light filled Christmas haven, this year it’s a nativity theme. “The grand opening of the room will coincide with Santa’s visit on Tuesday, 8 December, when he and his elves will deliver a special gift to each resident and clients at Glenview. “The talented Sing for your Life choir will be roaming around Glenview’s halls on Wednesday, 9 December, bringing Christmas cheer to all as well as inviting all to join them in a sing along, families and friends are welcome to join their loved ones for this event.” Ms O’Flaherty said on Friday 11 December, local celebrity Peter Gee would be visiting Glenview for a special handing over ceremony of presents. “These gifts have been donated for the ABC Giving Tree and are open to all residents, clients, staff, friends, families and community members,” she said. “However, the ‘pièce de résistance’ of Glenview’s Christmas celebrations it the annual Christmas Luncheon. “Held on Wednesday, 16 December at Tattersalls Park, it is expected more than 100 members of the Glenview commu- nity will join together to celebrate the Christmas period with delicious food, raffles, entertainment, including an encore visit from Santa.” If you would like to know more about Glenview’s activities throughout the Christmas period, please call (03) 6277 8800, email admin@ glenview.org.au, or follow us on Facebook www. facebook.com/GlenviewCommunity. Public notice Macquarie Point Sewage Treatment Plant Relocation Study – community consultation TasWater is currently conducting community consultation on options for TasWater’s Macquarie Point Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) relocation as the organisation investigates alternative STP locations. TasWater has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Macquarie Point Development Corporation (MPDC) and the Tasmanian Government to study the viability of removing the STP from the Macquarie Point site to allow the full value of the MPDC development to be realised for the state. TasWater is currently examining pipeline and treatment options, cost and timeframes for the STP relocation. Subject to the findings of the study, the target date to cease operations at the Macquarie Point site is 30 June 2019. CLAREMONT College photography students recently held an exhibition “Safe Places -Snapping Perceptions” to celebrate safe places and the important role these spaces play in our lives. The students’ photographs highlighted the power of imagery in portraying the safe aspects of daily life. Police statistics suggest that Glenorchy is one of the safest cities in Tasmania although it is often wrongly perceived that the city has a high crime rate. Images of people featured strongly in the exhibition, reflecting the important role that people play in making communities feel safe and connected. Gracie-Lee Thorpe won the judge’s choice award for her photo “A Rare Connection” and was also the Facebook people’s choice selection for “Your Favourite Place”. Chloe Bester was awarded the people’s choice award for “Tree”, with Angie Holbrook’s “Looking Out” the runner up. A special mention certificate was awarded to Rachel Parsons for “Autumn Memories”. Project supporters Glenorchy City Council, Claremont College, Harvey Norman, Red Herring and Northgate Shopping Centre commended the students on capturing and portraying their perceptions of safe places. The exhibition will be held again in 2016 for more information please contact Glenorchy City Council’s community development officer Lisa Rudd on phone 6216 6800 or email lrudd@ gcc.tas.gov.au New Year’s Day concert at Mona set to rock LEGISLATION to establish the State’s first Tasmanian Planning Scheme has now passed both Houses of Parliament. Treasurer Peter Gutwein said this would be Australia’s first ever single, statewide planning scheme and would unlock the state’s economic potential, create jobs and maintain the momentum that was building in the economy. “The new scheme will be faster, fairer, simpler and cheaper, boosting confidence for those looking to invest and expand,” he said. “It will provide the right platform for more economic development and ultimately create more jobs. “It will replace the current interim schemes which provide for only around 15 per cent consistency across Tasma- nia¹s 29 councils in the three regions.” The new laws are the result of extensive consultation with major stakeholders including the Tasmanian Farmers and Graziers Association, the Master Builders Tasmania, Local Government Association, the Housing Industry Association, and many other individuals with extensive planning and legal experience. “I am expecting the Planning Reform Taskforce to provide by the end of this year, Tasmania’s first ever set of statewide planning rules for consideration ahead of an extensive public consultation process through the Tasmanian Planning Commission early in 2016,” Mr Gutwein said. “The government’s new planning system is on track to be up and running in full by 2017, one year ahead of schedule.” Your windows can be delivered on time even at short notice! GLENORCHY residents can expect another big season of cricket starting with a test match returning to Tasmania for the first time in three-years. Blundstone Arena will play host to the Commonwealth Bank series opener between Australia and West Indies from 10-14 December. The Australians, led by Steve Smith, will head to Hobart for the first of three Tests against the men from the Caribbean who, despite having slipped down the ICC Test rankings, still boast match-winners in young captain Jason Holder, batsman Darren Bravo and pace pair Jerome www.emergencyvolunteers.tas.gov.au Taylor and Kemar Roach. The match is set to continue the tradition of the world’s best cricketers doing battle on the island state, snagging the title of the 12th Test played at Blundstone Arena since the very first match in 1989. Tasmania skipper George Bailey, who played five Tests in the 2013-14 Ashes whitewash, told cricket.com. au that he had fond memories of attending the second-ever game in Hobart as a schoolboy 22-years ago. “I do remember an Australia versus New Zealand Test in 1993,” he said. “I was in grade five and I petitioned the headmaster at Longford Primary School to take a busload of kids down to watch a day’s cricket in Hobart. “In his wisdom, he decided to let the grade six kids go, but one of the teachers relented and said, ‘given it was George’s idea, perhaps he should be allowed to go.’ “So we trekked down and saw Australia absolutely rock and roll New Zealand.” Bailey said the ground had seen a lot of changes since 1993. “It was just a completely different ground to what it is now,” he Puzzle solutions from page 12 sUdokU crossword QUIZ 1 Albania. 2 2002. 3 White and Blue. 4 False. 5 1915. 6 John Worsfold. 7 Dead Man Walking. 8 Andrew Stockdale. 9 True. 10 2000. solUtIons State said. “I remember being fascinated watching the commentators go up to the commentary box – it was like an old building scaffold and if the wind got up it used to sway. “Back then, I think it was really only one-anda-half grandstands, so watching the transition over the years has been pretty special. “It’s coincided with the rise of Tassie cricket.” As an active member of the Tasmanian system for more than a decade, Bailey said the rise of the state as a legitimate force on the country’s cricket scene could be attributed to a host of people behind the scenes, as well as David Boon and Ricky Ponting “blazing a trail on the playing front.” “There’s a huge number of people who were involved in the steady growth and Boon and Ponting showed it was possible to play for Australia and Tasmania,” he said. “But when I first started those guys weren’t around much, so it was Jamie Cox, Michael Di Venuto, Shaun Young and Dan Marsh who were so successful – they could compete and they got Tassie to a couple of Shield finals.” Mr Bailey said Tim Coyle also played a “huge part” when he came on board as coach. “Just in terms of a really strong belief, a really proud Tasmanian who was proud of our history,” he said. “Certainly Boonie and Ricky made it possible for all of us, but there was a huge number of people who contributed.” For more information or to buy tickets, visit www.cricket.com.au. The Athletics could be the dark horse for this year’s title, as they have secured experienced players in Cabrera and the Morrisons. With Sam having pitched at A-reserve in Geelong and Cabrera in the Argentine league, they will form a formidable pitching line-up when teamed up with Sully and Hamish Maitland - last season’s “Rookie of the Year”. Jan Menzies has shown she knows how to handle the bat and her speed on the basepaths will be an asset. The losses of Bailey and Robins will hurt, but the possible New Year returns of Robbie Devine and Steve Lovegrove from injury will be a major bonus for the green and gold. One of the Hobart Summer Baseball League Celebrity Baseball Game’s team “Sully’s Saints” are back row from left, Chris Chalker, Kerry Hore, Kieran Lovell, Graeme Cunningham, Blair Brownless, Jacob Despard, David Searle, Ryan Oakley, and front row, from left, Shae Hickey, Connor Pearcey, and Kristie Johnston. By David Searle* SUCH is the growth of interest in baseball that the HSBL has five teams competing in the league for the 2015/16 season, with the Orioles being the latest addition. Below is a preview of this season, but first let’s look at how the first round went on Sunday 15 November. The Dragons and Eastern Athletics hit off the new season, with the former fielding a very powerful batting line-up. By the end of three innings the Dragons led 12-1, with Kay Hong, Michael Blake and Shane Davies supplying the power, each hitting solo home runs. Aaron Mann made his return to the Athletics’ side a memorable one, as he hit a towering two run homer. This was part of a seven run fifth innings, which saw his team draw to within five runs. This was as close as the Athletics would get, as the Dragons ran out winners, 15-9. The afternoon game saw the reigning premiers, the Northern White Sox, take on the Hotel Soho Hobart Blue Jays. The White Sox got off to a flyer, scoring four runs in the top of the first innings. Not to be outdone, the Blue Jays responded with seven runs in the bottom of the first and the Sox were never really in the hunt thereafter, eventually losing 15-7. For the Jays, Steven Harris had two hits from three at bats and Roly Trustum had two from two, while the other Jays’ highlight was the outfield catching by Evan Toms. For the Sox, Chris Cooper, Matt Drumm, Matt Fox, David Humphries and Grant Stump each had two hits. Northern White Sox (reigning premiers): In: Terese Millhouse. Out: Chris Chalker (Orioles); Andrew Kennedy (Orioles); Sory Samake; Alex Naylor; Shaun Newbon; David He. The Sox have been hit hard by the off-season departures of Chalker and Kennedy to the Orioles and by serious injuries to Matt Cashman and Paul McIntyre. Their batting should still be competitive, but with Cashman out for an extended period, their pitching takes a hit. Terese Millhouse, who is the first woman to compete in the HSBL, has performed well and with a lot of enthusiasm in the pre-season. She will be a handy inclusion to the team. The addition of any new players in the coming weeks could be pivotal to their chances this season. Dragons (runners-up, minor premiers): In: Tim Holland (South Australia); Charlie Cho; Ross Peters (Canada). Out: Phil Swift; Jared Rush (Orioles); Jason Featherstone (Orioles). The Dragons will be extremely hard to beat this season. The addition of Tim Holland not only gives them that desperately needed pitcher to work in tandem with reigning league MVP Brendan Adams, but also adds another very powerful bat to an already powerful batting line up. Kay Hong returns to add his bat to the line-up Summer baseball league hits a home run By David Searle* THE last few weeks have been huge for the Hobart Summer Baseball League (HSBL) following a visit from the Wollongong-based Northern Pirates (NSW) and an inaugural celebrity baseball game at the end of October. The first two games against the Pirates were split, with HSBL winning a highly entertaining game 13-8, only to have the Pirates gain their revenge in the afternoon with a comprehensive victory. The “rubber” game was held on Sunday afternoon and despite fielding its strongest side available, the HSBL Allstars were no match for the Pirates, going down 17-2. Thank you very much to the Northern Pirates president Al Michaelis and his team for visiting – a fun weekend was had by all and we look forward to future visits, both in Tasmania and in Wollongong. Prior to the Allstars game, the first HSBL Celebrity game pitted Sully’s Saints, captained by Scott Bacon MP, against the Chalky’s Angels, captained by Glenorchy Mayor Kristie Johnson. It proved to be an exciting game of big hitting, interesting base running styles, vocal players and lots of laughter, eventually ending in a thrilling 14-14 tie. A big thank you to all the celebrities who competed, especially to Sully and Chris Chalker who organised the weekend. The long and tireless work of Zac Shutt, Chris Morrison, John Langenberg and Naomi Searle must also be praised. Before the start of the 2015/16 season, the league secured additional sponsorship with its first gold sponsor in Raine and Horne Hobart Real Estate and our first silver sponsor in Fish Focus Consulting – we thank these businesses for their support. *David Searle is the president of Baseball Tasmania and first year player Ross Peters has shown he will be a more than handy addition. The consistent availability of players will be pivotal for the Dragons. Eastern Athletics: In: Jan Menzies; Nicolas Cabrera (Argentina); Chris Morrison (Geelong); Sam Morrison (Geelong); Allan Haw. Out: Jonathon Castro; David Bailey; Stuart Hotel Soho Hobart Blue Jays: In: Lloyd Budgen; Shane Stanfield (QLD). Out: Brendan and David Wenban. Stanfield played for the Brisbane Bandits several seasons ago, so his experience will be immense for the Jays who retain basically the same squad as last season. Zac Shutt’s return to full health could prove crucial for the Jays, as he gives them another pitcher who can pitch a few innings. Veterans Hubble, Harris, Millington and Hegarty will again lead the Jays, but with a season under the belt of the 2014/15 first year players and the outfield catching of Evan Toms, you can expect them to be thereabouts come finals. Orioles: In: Chris Chalker (Sox); Andrew Kennedy (Sox); Jared Rush (Dragons); Jason Featherstone (Dragons); Shane Bromfield (NSW); Stuart Robins (Athletics); Linton Burgess (retirement), everyone else. A young, enthusiastic team under the tutelage of Chalker, Featherstone, Bromfield and Burgess will sorely test some of the established teams. Chalker does not know the meaning of defeat and will expertly guide and encourage his teammates. The presence of Bromfield and Burgess will add established talent to the line-up and the enthusiasm of the first year players will take them a long way, so underestimate them at your own peril. Prediction: Premiers: Dragons. Runners up: Eastern Athletics *David Searle is the president of Baseball Tasmania D L O S For Sale now or by Auction 3 2 Helping make dreams come true. The match, which was sponsored by NRL Touch Tasmania, was a display of men’s commitment and promise to support each other to prevent violence against women. Premier Will Hodgman signed the community pledge board along with other prominent men in the community. “It is important to provide men with the opportunity to speak up and seek support along with information on how to help friends or family who may find themselves in a family violence situation,” Glenorchy Mayor Kristie Johnston said. “Council held this event to help break the silence around violence, raise awareness and show that help is always available for men and women.” At Council’s September meeting a motion was carried to say “NO” to family violence and acknowledge the work being done by organisations in the City to support families experiencing family violence. The Dad’s Day Out match included local fathers, community members, the Glenorchy City Council and state level touch players and ended in a friendly 4-4 draw. Event organisers plant to make the touch football match an ongoing addition to the popular Dad’s Day Out event.
