Don’t you just love running into an old friend you haven’t seen in a while? One or both of you will state “It’s great to see you!” It truly was great to see so many MSSA members, new members and meet several non-members during MSSA’s Cruisin’ Down the Highway “Convention and Trade Show in Chattanooga, Tennessee! After finishing all convention details for a final report to MSSA Board of Directors, I realized how large the” MSSA Volunteer Spirit” truly is. One report forwarded to MSSA Board was a “Thank You” list containing 51 MSSA members who helped with various convention functions. With a packed schedule of events offering lots of activities over a three day period, MSSA looks toward its members to lend a hand with these activities. Examples of “MSSA Volunteer Spirit”: Bill Ortwein Sign Company designed and produced most convention signage; Sponsors of all 4 levels of sponsorship; Labon Tatum, Steve Metheny, Mandy Wisner, Reece, Graphic Solutions and Tubelite personnel helped obtain donations for auctions; Watchfire Signs by Time-O-Matic raffled large screen TV generating $295 toward 2012 scholarships; Rhonda Caldwell volunteered to help with registration; Sign Builders produced signs: “Mystery Exhibitor” and “Sign Design Contest Winners”; MSSA Executive Committee welcomed new members; board members volunteered to meet and greet attendees as they entered the live auction; Tina and Troy Crocker delivered decorations for Saturday’s “Bikers’ Theme party, David Watson, Rick Nipper, Joey Gerhart and Rod Seay organized the band “Train Wreck”, Graphic Solutions Group (John Henrichs) sold MSSA Convention T-shirts donating $430 toward 2012 scholarships; Jerry Hodge retrieved boxes from convention center shipping department for MSSA goodie bags / registration material and became the person in charge of Thursday’s tour; Elvis Davis organized golf tournament and Calcutta; David White organized poker tournament; Marty Guinee presented two seminars; Roger Fillebaum MSSA’s official photographer; Z3 Graphics created, produced and shipped the MSSA motorcycle banner; Harold Miller designed, produced and delivered scholarship banner; Tim Lloyd, Max Young and Robert Lowe led new EPA paint coating rule discussion; Elliott Equipment organized speaker to discuss new OSHA crane truck regulations, and most importantly, members asked “What can I do to help?” Sounds pretty impressive and it is. Would you like to get plugged into the “MSSA Volunteer Spirit”? Just attend a meeting and it will sweep over you! The” MSSA Volunteer Spirit” was alive and very well represented in Chattanooga, Tennessee July 21-23, 2011. I offers apologies to anyone I might have missed in thanking! We feel we have been able to put something together that can truly bring value to both the association and its members. The idea to put together an insurance program for the MSSA members popped up about 10 months ago. Since that time, Mikos/Kampakis, The MSSA, and the Executive Committee have spent a great deal of time crafting an insurance program that first and foremost benefits the members of the association. Through these efforts we have put together a business insurance program that offers the members preferred pricing discounts and access to safety and risk management resources. This program is designed to offer MSSA members a special pricing credit that has been developed just for them as well a comprehensive coverage from that provides the best coverage available. Some of the highlights of the program include: •10% pricing discount right off the top. This will be applied prior to any other credits being applied. This special credit is available to MSSA members only. •Lines of coverage eligible for the program are property, general liability, auto, umbrella, workers compensation, and bonding. •Our insurance company partners, EMC Insurance Companies and Summit, have agreed to discuss a potential member dividend program if the program reaches a certain level. •Safety and Risk Management resources available to members include workers compensation safety programs, driver safety programs, and contract liability issues to name a few obtain risk management advice, or have their insurance quoted for potential premium savings, we are always available in whatever capacity benefits a particular member. Even if we are not your agent, don’t hesitate to utilize us as a resource for your business. We have already had tremendous success within our home state and are confident out program offers comprehensive coverage and very competitive pricing. Midsouth Messenger - August 2011 ROY COX AWARDED 5TH AGNEW/CONDRAY EXCELLENCE AWARD “Roger Fillebaum presents Agnew Condray Excellence Award to 5th recipient, Roy Cox” “There are many words to describe Roy Cox: genuine, heartfelt, gentleman, tactful, ethical, and unwavering. His passionate belief in the sign industry and the ability of a group of conscientious individuals to make a difference has, in turn, made a tremendous difference. Roy’s sincerity and kindness are what you see immediately, but when you look deeper you see his unwavering sense of doing what is right. He is the person you want at the helm when things are rough, and he is the person you want by your side to enjoy the moment. He has a unique ability to relate to everyone he meets and he listens before he speaks (so when he speaks, you listen!).” Lori M. Anderson, CAE President & CEO, International Sign Association “It has been an honor and privilege to work side by side with Roy over the past 10 years. His calm demeanor and wisdom help guide us through a very challenging economic period at ISA. I remember my first introduction with Roy when he was looking for assistance with some code issues in the Huntsville area. Roy is the kind of person that not only was willing to ask for help, but wanted to help others. Roy immediately got involved with Mid-South and his natural leadership qualities quickly led him to the presidency of Mid-South. His leadership at Mid-South then thrust him into leadership roles at ISA. I sat beside Roy at ISA and witnessed firsthand the passion, conviction, dedication and sacrifice that Roy and Wanda made for our Industry. My proudest “title” for Roy is “Friend”. Roy, more than anything in the world, I am proud to call you my friend and I thank you for allowing me to be a small part of your life.” Troy Crocker, President & Co-Owner, faces, Inc. MSSA 2000 President & ISA Past Chairman “Roy has always inspired me. Whenever I thought to myself... “I don’t want to take on this responsibility”, I could think of Roy and what he would do. I could say to myself, “I don’t have the time”, and then think of Roy and the enormous time commitment that he continuously dedicates to our industry. I could say to myself, “man I’m too tired and I just need a little break” and somewhere in my thick skull I’d hear my ol’ buddy Roy saying “you can sleep when you’re dead!” Roy has made it easier for guys like me in a lot of ways because he has dedicated so much of his time working in our industry. One day he’ll leave it much better than he found it. On the other hand, he’s made it much more difficult. I know my foot must be at least two or three sizes bigger than Roy’s but he has made it damn near impossible for anyone to fill his freaking shoes!!” David Watson, Watchfire Signs / Time-O-Matic, Inc MSSA 2008 President& ISA Director of Suppliers Division “Roy has served MSSA, ISA and the industry in a quiet manner but with a passion for seeing that our industry is treated fairly at government levels. Roy has given numerous hours, days and weeks fighting for the rights of both the sign companies and their customers. We owe Roy a lot for the success and status MSSA enjoys.” Elvis Davis, MSSA 1993 President Agnew / Condray Excellence Award has been established to show recognition to those that have been involved with and the promotion of Mid South Sign Association and have gone ABOVE & BEYOND in providing “Service & Financial Support” to further the cause of our association. MSSA has been blessed with great leadership that has carried on the vision of Russell Condray and Tom Agnew, founders of Mid South Sign Association. 5 Midsouth Messenger - August 2011 Updates from ISA ISA adds certified planner to government relations team James Carpentier, AIPC, will join the International Sign Association’s government relations department on Monday as manager of state and local government affairs. Carpentier most recently owned a consulting firm that managed sign variances and entitlements for clients and worked with state sign associations on legislative issues. Prior to that, he was director of government relations for YESCO, where, among other duties, he participated in educational and outreach efforts to government entities. “We are thrilled to have James join our outstanding government relations team,” said Lori Anderson, ISA president and CEO. “With his background in planning, he brings incredible strengths to the table, especially as we work harder to educate planners on the benefits of reasonable sign codes.” New model sign code now available A new model code is available for sign companies and local officials to use to draft beneficial and effective sign ordinances. Urban Design Associates, made up of academics from the planning, legal and transportation engineering fields, wrote “An Evidence-Based Model Sign Code” to provide key stakeholders with the latest legal information and scientific research regarding the constitutional and safety issues involved with on-premise signs. To obtain an online version of the UDA model sign code or for more information, please contact ISA’s David Hickey at david.hickey@signs.org. Education providers may register programs with ISA and earn PDUs In its role as the leading provider of continuing education for the sign industry, ISA’s International Sign Academy is expanding its Professional Development Unit, or PDU, program. The Education Provider Program allows education providers -- including government agencies, educational institutions, sign companies, sign suppliers, distributors and other sign industry professionals -- to register existing programs with ISA and provide PDUs to attendees. Click-N-Locks Q: If while operating a forklift the vehicle tips over should you jump out? Available in 14” & 24” If you said, “yes”, then you would be dead wrong. By jumping from a tipping lift a driver puts themselves at risk of being pinned or crushed by the falling truck. Instead the driver should make sure they are securely fastened in the lift and brace themselves for the fall. Q: A sloppy worker is only a danger to himself? If you answered false you are wrong. A sloppy worker not only endangers himself, but those around him. If you see a worker behaving in a sloppy manner it is your duty to either report his actions to the proper person or address the actions yourself to ensure a safe work place. Safety Quiz is provided by Safety Services Company, the same company that MSSA purchases monthly safety meeting reports. Monthly safety meeting reports are one of many benefits of MSSA membership.
