As the year comes to a close and my first term as your chapter president concludes, I would
like to take this opportunity to thank all the membership of the Annapolis chapter MSSA
for your support.
At the State level the Maryland Sport Fishing Association has had a very successful year.
Many of you participated in our tournament series throughout the year and the Annapolis
chapter has once again represented well in competition. The value of being an MSSA member,
however, is not just in competing in fishing tournaments. MSSA is very intent on protecting
your rights as recreational anglers. We will continue to fight to maintain and improve the
Chesapeake Bay fishery for all species. The health of the Bay is a top priority. We will also
continue to focus on our youth anglers. Many of you were introduced to our passion by
our parents or grandparents or maybe by a friend. Pass it on. Get the kids involved, get em
hooked….it’s fun. As a member of the MSSA we have a voice. Please help to make our
voice even louder by getting a friend involved. I encourage you to bring someone new to a
chapter meeting or to our “Saltwater Fishing Expo” in February. Show them what we are
all about and encourage them to become a member.
At the chapter level … what can I say? I am proud to be president of the best chapter in the
organization. Thanks once again for the tremendous support. I would like to especially thank
all of you who give your time. Thank you to the members of the Board for your service and
thank you to all the committee chairmen. I know the hours that you all dedicate to our club
and we appreciate you very much. I look forward to another successful year with you. A
special thank you to Jean Hoffman for serving as our treasurer for the past 3 years. Great
job Jean!! To the membership I encourage you to please get involved if you can. The core
group does a fantastic job but they could use any help you could give.
Merry Christmas … Happy Holidays!!! I look hope to see all of you at our celebration
December 19th.

MSSA Holiday Party
Wednesday, December 19th at 7:30 PM
Please join the MSSA Annapolis Chapter to celebrate the holiday season at
the American Legion Post #7 at Rt. 450 and Crownsville Road in Annapolis.
Santa will be on hand to offer holiday cheer and special raffle prizes. The
Annapolis Chapter will sponsor an open bar. Please bring a dish to share with
fellow chapter members, spouses, and guests. We will have brief chapter
business to get everyone up to speed on the upcoming Saltwater Expo and
annual chapter raffle. Everyone is welcome!
SUMMER FISHING TRIP
The chapter fishing trip for the Chesapeake Bay will be July 17, 2013. I
haven’t worked out all the details, but I’m certain that we will only fish
out of Chesapeake Beach. I’ll go over the timing with Captain Randy
Dean. I’m thinking a 1 or 2 pm start time which would have us off the
water at 7-8PM. With summer thunder storms and some of us having to
drive a good distance to get home, this seems like a good compromise
time. I hope to have more information by the January news letter.
I think Lee Slagle is going to try to run a spring trip out of Ocean City,
with Captain Monty. He will have more information for you by the
January newsletter.
See you at the holiday party.

Fishing Report
I signed up for the 2012 Fall MSSA Tournament along with my son
Drew hoping to spend some quality time while catching a big fish or two.
During my fishing preparations, I made sure to send in my all MSSA
Member Tournament Crew Log to the MSSA Office. That turned out to
be a smart decision but more on that topic later. Drew came home from
school on Thursday with a bad cough. On Friday he came home from
school in worse condition and was coughing up crud balls that would
make any parent cringe. So Friday night I told Drew to sleep in Saturday
and fish on Sunday if he was feeling better.
Saturday morning I left the frost covered dock just before sunrise and
pointed the REEL CRAZY south. The fishing reports I had heard and
read indicated that the best catches of big fish were down south plus I
have caught a lot of big fish between the mouth of the Choptank River
and the Power Plant. I came off plane at the mouth of the Choptank
River with a 15 knot wind coming from the northeast. I deployed the
planar boards and put out an 11 rod spread that covered the water column
from shallow to deep. I trolled south while zigzagging along the western
channel edge toward the Power Plant, crossed the main channel several
times, then trolled north along the eastern channel ledge until I was back
up to R78. NADA, unless you count a plastic bag and a bunch of leaves
as the Catch of the Day. I didn’t get a single strike all day and I didn’t see
another fish caught by the other boats in the area. I started to pull lines
at 3PM followed by a long and contemplative ride home into a 2-3 foot
head sea. Something had to change but what should I do to change my
luck for the second day of the Tournament?
Sunday morning I left the dock at first light without my son Drew once
again. He was feeling a little better but not yet back to normal. I was
replaying yesterday’s fishing reports from TidalFish in my head while
also recalling what I had seen on my fishfinder – all of the fish and bait
were down deep. When I got to the mouth of the Magothy I was greeted
by 3 foot rollers as the incoming tide pushed against the 15-20 knot
wind from the N/NE. The Small Craft Advisory on the Weather Radio
locked me into my decision to switch to Plan B. Plan B was to fish in
the lee of Kent Island and put out a deep running spread without planar
boards. I came off plane at the Bay Bridge and put out a 5 rod spread
intended to run between 30 to 50 feet deep. My hopes were to run 5 baits
in the strike zone and still keep things manageable while fishing solo
on a bumpy Chesapeake Bay. I trolled south along the western channel
edge to Thomas Point, turned towards Bloody Point Light and crossed
the Bay to the eastern side. I then turned north and worked the eastern
channel edge up to Kentmor but still nothing. I then turned south and
tried zigzagging down the main channel and staying in the deep water.
About 15 minutes later one of the rods bends over and line peeled off
the reel with the drag singing the tune that I had been waiting for. The
fish had hit on one of my long boat rods with 200’ of 50# spectra with
tandem chartreuse parachutes (3 & 6 oz) with a 10 oz in line sinker that
should have been swimming about 40’ below the surface. I cleared a
shorter rod on the same side of the boat and then put on a rod belt to
fight the fish. It took me about 15 minutes to get the fish boat side and
reach for the net. I hate to admit that I missed on my first two attempts to
net the fish and on the third attempt the stinger hook on the bait became
snagged on the frame of the net. OH CRAP! So I made a quick decision
to switch hands on the net and reach for the gill plate of the fish with my
right gloved hand. I then quickly hauled the fish over the gunwale and
into the cockpit. Whew! Big smile on my face as I retrieved and stored
the remaining fishing rods. At the Sandy Point Weigh Station the fish
measured 43 inches and 33.3 pounds. Since I had turned in my MSSA
Crew Report prior to the Tournament, I was eligible and won the $500
Sunday Prize! So my advice is to be flexible with your Game Plane
and to submit your All MSSA Crew Report to enhance your chances of
winning in the Tournament.

Rod and Reel Raffle
CHAPTER OFFICERS and
LEADERSHIP TEAM
Once again the Annapolis Chapter of the MSSA will conduct its annual
rod and reel raffle to raise funds for the chapter. This year’s raffle will
feature a set of four (4) Shimano rods and reels. This annual raffle is key
to the success of the chapter and enables us to support activities such as
Rock-on-Warriors, the crab feast, the Saltwater Expo, chapter-supported
fishing trips, festivities, and other cool stuff. This past year’s raffle was
the most successful ever, and we hope to meet or exceed the results
from that effort. Please come to the chapter holiday party on Dec. 19th
to preview the rod and reel combos and pick up your tickets for sale to
friends, family, and fishing colleagues.
