Special thanks to John Thibodeau for serving as our President for the past two years. During
his tenure John shared with us not only his passion for fishing, but his compassion for the
men and women serving our country by establishing the annual “Rock on Worriers” spring
fishing event. Thank you John! I would also like to recognize Dale Dirks and Paul Herrmann
for serving the past two years as co-Vice Presidents and for their never ending time and
devotion to our chapter.
Thanks also to the Board members that are continuing to serve; Treasurer Jean Holms and
Secretary Fred Menage and I welcome Chris Rosenthal as our new Vice President. I look
forward to working with you all. To the event coordinators and committee volunteers; Pete
Abbott, Kevin McMenamin, Bob Thompson, Brian Stempowski, Ron Schaefer, George Brown
and Larry Muscatello … thank you for continuing to step up and produce awesome activities
and events for our membership. I consider myself very fortunate as the new President to be
surrounded by so many talented and dedicated chapter members.
Volunteering is key to our success. So, for those who can, please get involved and volunteer
your time. We need help with all our activities. We will not continue to be the première
chapter in the MSSA without new member support.
The year 2012 presents a full schedule of events beginning with the Saltwater Fishing Expo
in late February, followed by the much anticipated opening day of Rockfish season in April.
Many of our chapter members will be participating in the Boatyard Bar and Grill, Opening
Day Charity Tournament. Next up is the Annapolis Chapter “Rock on Worriers” tournament
followed by our Spring Chapter competition and Spring MSSA Tournaments. Summer brings
MSSA offshore tournaments and the Chapter summer kid’s fishing trip. In the fall we serve
up our annual Crab Feast in September and the MSSA Fall Tournament comes in November.
Our year ends with our Chapter Christmas Party in December.
Additionally, please join us at our monthly chapter meetings. We will continue to invite
great guest speakers to educate us on the latest fishing techniques and tackle. Don’t forget
to pick up a few tickets at our fabulous raffle table. We need and appreciate your support.
Thank you for being part of such a great local organization and I look forward to
working together with you. Good fellowship, good fishing and good luck in 2012.

JANUARY MEETING
2012 SALTWATER FISHING EXPO
January
18th
7:30 PM
The Annapolis Chapter of the MSSA is pleased that Captain
“Walleye” Pete Dahlberg will be the guest speaker at its monthly
chapter meeting on Wednesday, January 18th at 7:30 PM at the
American Legion Post #7 at Rt. 450 and Crownsville Road in
Annapolis. Pete will make a slide presentation on light tackle
fishing for stripers, with a special emphasis on winter fishing
at the Calvert Cliffs power plant and at the Chesapeake Bay
Bridge-Tunnel. His presentations are always informative and
entertaining, and we look forward to an excellent discussion.
Everyone is welcome.
Special Notice To Annapolis Chapter Members – Please
attend the January 18th, 7:30 pm chapter meeting to help kick
off the New Year. There are several important events during the
next few months and the chapter needs many volunteers to help
staff events, sell (and buy) raffle tickets, attend functions, and
otherwise make our club a success. This is the time of year that
you can really make a difference in the success of the Annapolis
chapter of the MSSA. We have an excellent speaker (Walleye
Pete) lined up for the January meeting, and will also have on
hand the four (4) Shimano rod and reel trolling combos that are
being raffled by the Annapolis chapter. Drawing will be held at
the Saltwater Expo in February. Looking forward to seeing you
at the January meeting.
Dale Dirks
MSSA CAPTAIN OF THE YEAR
CONTEST - 2011
With just the three fishing tournaments for 2011 completed, the
Annapolis Chapter is proud to have four members in the top twenty
five contestants in this event. Vin Gerrior of Centerville placed 5th
with 1283.7 points total, while Dale Dirks of Mayo finished in 8th
place with 1254 points, Greg Shute of Annapolis had a point total
1096.5 for 22nd place and David Fischer came 24th place with a point
total of 1085.5. Greg and David did not participate in the Offshore
Tuna-ment but did great in the bay fishing to place in the top group.
Congratulations to these anglers and their crew members.
Dave Smith has announced that MSSA will be adding a flounder
tournament to the series in 2012 allowing for more participants and
increasing the stakes. This is really good news for those of us that do
not venture off-shore since it is difficult to compete with the larger
boats that are able to, in this overall Captain of the Year Event.
The SALTWATER FISHING EXPO will be held on Saturday Feb.
25th from 8 AM to 3 PM at the Annapolis Elks Lodge. This event has
grown into one of the most popular Winter Fishing Shows in this area
featuring expert Seminar Speakers, Top Quality Tackle Dealers and
local Charter Captains and Guides. This year’s Speakers and Topics are:
9AM
10AM
11AM
12 PM
Capt. Charlie Sisson: Spring Trolling for Trophy Stripers
Capt. Sean Welsh: Offshore Fishing for Marlin/Tuna/Dolphin
Capt. Chuck Fisher: Live Lining for Stripers
Capt. Shawn Kimbro: Chesapeake Light Tackle Fishing
Prop Talk Magazine and the Boatyard Bar & Grill are our Major
Sponsors and the event is organized and staffed by Annapolis Chapter
Members. This is the major yearly fund raiser for the chapter and
every additional attendee increases our ability to fund Chapter Events.
Please share the Expo Flyer with your fishing buddies and make plans
to attend this popular event. The Website for the Expo can be found
at www.saltwaterfishingexpo.com.
Vendor Tables are once again SOLD OUT. Please support the
numerous Small Business Owners who will be exhibiting their
high quality Products and Services at the Expo. Please contact

MSSA ANNAPOLIS CHAPTER’S JULY
FISHING TRIP
I realize July is a long way off, but we have some decisions to make
regarding our July chapter fishing trip. Last year the group voted
overwhelmingly to fish out of Chesapeake Beach and to keep it a
late day trip. I think we need to take into consideration in 2012 that
night croaker fishing is not what it once was, out of Chesapeake
Beach or Solomons. It has fallen off the last few years to what
happened last year … three boats, with 30 fishermen and women,
catching 13 croaker. It was so slow that one of our boats skipped the
croaker fishing altogether.
I think we have to reevaluate our summer fishing trip. It started
out as a night fishing trip leaving from Solomons at 6 pm and
returning at 12 pm. Captain Buckner suggested the following
year we fish from 4-11pm, go live lining for for Rock and then do
croaker fishing after dark for a few hours. The Rock fishing at the
gas dock was great and the croaker fishing at Point Lookout was
phenomenal. The third year with Captain Buckner we got blown
out of croaker fishing and ended up spot fishing in the river after
we caught our Rock. It was decided the following year we would
fish out of Chesapeake Beach because it was 45 minutes closer. The
Rock fishing was great and the croaker bite was as good as Point
Lookout. TIMES HAVE CHANGED. The last two trips, 2010 and
2011 the croaker bite was way off. They did have a good bite in
June but that’s like saying you should have been here yesterday the
fishing was awesome. Heard that before.
I realize that the fishing trip is split half and half between retired
members and working members. I would like to suggest we do a
1-7 or a 2-8 fishing trip. Last year Randy Dean suggested this time
frame. He said daytime fishing for large spot, perch and croaker in
the Choptank was very good. He thought the new time frame would
give us time to bottom fish either in the Choptank or wherever
the bite was and do our live lining for Rock. With this time frame
we could fish out of Solomon’s if we wanted a change of scenery
and Captains. Coming home from Solomon’s at 7 or 8pm is a lot
different than 12-1am.
You’ve heard my ideas now I would like to hear yours. Email me
at Mellowfive@comcast.net and give me your opinions. I’m open
to discussing any ideas from a traditional 6am trip fishing in the
bay to a trip out of Ocean City. I need to book boats by February or
March. I will not be at the January meeting. I hope we can talk at
the February meeting and make a decision that will please as many
as possible. This year Lee Slagle will be co chairman of the fishing
trip or trips.

FISHING TECHNOLOGY
Technology, it’s hard to avoid, even when it comes to fishing. Some
embrace it, some find it black magic, love it or hate it, it’s here to
stay. So, this month I wanted to pass along a little tidbit to help with
your fishing success.
I recently became the proud owner of a new smart phone, an
Android smart phone. This wondrous little gizmo has all the bells
and whistles, probably the equivalent of a room size mainframe
computer circa 1970.
Anyway, what I want to put you onto is an application you can
install on your phone, a fishing application. This little gem is called
“My Fishing Companion” and is basically a full fledged database
application that will track your catches. It integrates with the phone
so not only can you describe what the catch is, and how you caught
it, but it uses your phone’s GPS capability and weather application
capabilities to add that info to the record automagically! This stuff
is way cool.
After a season of fishing and adding all your catches to the
application, you can review it and probably extrapolate some pretty
good trends and predictions about where and how to fish next
season. I used to use a little notebook and try to take the time to
write all this down, but it just never worked out very well. Using
this phone application sure makes it easy. While you’re pulling in
the catch, the captain can have all the data entered into the record
before you even see the fish! Then just input its species and size and
you’re done.
Technology, you gotta love it. Best thing is, the application has 2
versions, the free one, and the one for $2.99(AT&T), can’t beat the
price. The free version only allows you to store 5 fish, so you might
want to download that one first to check it out, especially before
you go and break the bank on the unlimited $2.99 version.
