At the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, we do our very best, year in and year out, to offer a variety of programs and events that help us live up to our mission: to encourage the creation and appreciation of art. For the past two years, our exhibitions have challenged and provoked, entertained and amused thousands of visitors young and old. Exhibitions such as Masks of Mexico, The Car as Art, Jacob Lawrence and The Tokaido Road each appealed to specific audiences, to be sure, but each had a broad appeal that transcended its content. The Figure Revealed, an exhibition of works by 25 contemporary American figurative artists, was curated by the KIA and made its world debut here in our galleries. The mid-career retrospective Lorna Simpson drew critical and popular acclaim from coast to coast, including its stop here in Kalamazoo. Meanwhile, the continued successes of our annual exhibitions of local and regional art – the West Michigan Area Show, the High School Area Show, Young Artists of Kalamazoo County, even the KIA Art Fair – demonstrate that the visual arts are more vibrant than ever in our community. Similarly, our collection has grown with the addition of a great variety of works, from a rare Art Deco icon (The Jazz Bowl) to a portfolio of prints by Jacob Lawrence to a Chinese bowl from the Song/Jin Dynasty to a gorgeous array of mosaics and vases by Louis Comfort Tiffany. The Kirk Newman Art School offers hundreds of classes and workshops to thousands of eager students of all ages and abilities. A number of new events – Appraisal Day and Ladies’ Night Out, for instance – have taken their place on a KIA calendar already filled with exciting, informative, interesting things to do and see. In 2009, the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts celebrates 85 years of service to the community. I am more convinced than ever that this longevity is a dazzling testament to our community – and to the power of art. We are grateful to everyone who has taken this journey with us. James A. Bridenstine Executive Director 32 4PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE It was my great pleasure to serve as president of the KIA Board of Directors for this two-year period. The art we enjoyed was thought-provoking, eclectic and often completely unexpected. The KIA was the only Midwest venue for Lorna Simpson, a provocative exhibition that was every bit as impressive in Kalamazoo as it was when it was shown at museums in New York and Los Angeles. The Car as Art filled our galleries with classic automobiles from the United States and Europe, and Jacob Lawrence gave thousands of visitors the chance to see work from one of our nation’s great African American artists. Kalamazoo Collects presented a stunning array of international art from local collectors. Also on view in the galleries were miniature houses, Mexican masks, Asian art from 2,000 years ago to the present day, and a collection of contemporary figure paintings that had never been seen together before their debut here. There were parties galore, hundreds of classes, school tours, holiday sales, fashion shows, film festivals, musical performances, lectures, presentations, demonstrations, art camps, art auctions, art fairs and numerous other events and programs that make this one of the most vibrant places in the region. Behind the scenes was just as much activity as you see when you visit. For years now, the funding landscape has been shifting for museum and other cultural organizations. With these changes come great challenges, which we were able to meet each step of the way, thanks to some of the boldest cost-containment measures I’ve seen. I have especially enjoyed working with the other KIA Board members, with the KIA’s outstanding professional staff, and with KIA Executive Director Jim Bridenstine, a true visionary who has led this organization for nearly 20 years. That an organization like the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts can do well even during difficult economic times is a great tribute to both the KIA and the wonderful community we call home. Jim often says, with a smile and a wink, that the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts is the “finest visual arts institution between Chicago and Detroit.” I believe it unwise to question Jim on this point! William U. Parfet President Kalamazoo Institute of Arts Board of Directors 2006-07 and 2007-08 34 4EXHIBITIONS Three exhibitions demonstrating the diversity of the KIA’s exhibition offerings ushered in the 2006-07 fiscal year. Lines of Discovery: 225 Years of American Drawings captured America’s evolution as a nation through 143 drawings from the Columbus Museum in Georgia. School children and other visitors explored the mysterious allure of Mexico’s mask-making traditions in Magic and Intrigue: Masks of Mexico. More than 130 hand-carved and painted examples from all regions of Mexico illustrated this vanishing art form that dates to the pre-Columbian era. A Parallel World: Small-Scale Houses and Miniatures featured dozens of meticulously crafted works by internationally known miniature artists. Among the pieces, drawn from the collection of Francis Light, were scale reproductions of a German Renaissance house, an adobe house, and Vincent van Gogh’s yellow house at Arles, France. In the winter, The Car as Art invited viewers to appreciate the automobile for its design and aesthetic qualities. This survey from the 1920s through the 1950s featured more than a dozen classic cars, including a 1932 Duesenberg, a 1929 Bentley Speed 6, a 1957 Mercedes Roadster and a lemon-yellow 1967 Ferrari 275 GTV4. Also on view were original illustrations for Chrysler and Ford by illustrator and Kalamazoo resident Ross Cousins. The KIA was the only Midwest venue for the nationally touring exhibition Lorna Simpson. Organized by American Federation of the Arts, this exhibition provided a comprehensive mid-career review of the work of this leading contemporary American artist. The survey began with the large-scale photographs and text works of the 1980s, which challenged conventional views of gender, identity, culture, 34 history and memory. Simpson’s later, multi-panel photographs printed on felt and her most recent video works were also part of this exhibition. EXHIBITION SCHEDULE In fall 2007, the KIA highlighted Asian art along two famous roads. Silk Road to Clipper Ship: Trade, Changing Markets, and East Asian Ceramics demonstrated the impact of the exchange of goods, people and ideas on Chinese and Japanese potters. These splendid examples spanning nearly two thousand years of history were lent by the University of Michigan Museum of Art. Lines of Discovery: 225 Years of American Drawings September 23-December 31 Gus Foster and Ando Hiroshige: The Tokaido Road presented two journeys, separated by more than a century. Photographer Gus Foster, armed with a map and a camera, traced the ancient road from Edo (Tokyo) to Kyoto. Contrasting Foster’s 360-degree photographs with Hiroshige’s prints revealed both dramatic changes and threads of continuity through the decades and the miles. Kalamazoo Collects celebrated the quality and diversity of private collections in Kalamazoo. Generous loans from more than 50 collections in the Kalamazoo area offered Aboriginal painting, ancient Chinese ceramics, contemporary prints, photography, painting, sculpture and many more fascinating treasures. Selections from the past 10 years of institutional collecting at the KIA were exhibited simultaneously in Warhol, Chihuly and Others: Showcasing New KIA Acquisitions. Three print series formed the core of Jacob Lawrence, loaned through D.C. Moore Gallery in New York City. The bold and dramatic narrative depictions of Legend of John Brown, Legend of Genesis and Toussaint L’Ouverture captivated audiences of adults and school children. Numerous other exhibitions featured work by local artists and from the permanent collection of the KIA. 2006-07 Magic and Intrigue: Masks of Mexico October 28-January 7 A Parallel World: Small-Scale Houses and Miniatures October 28-January 7 The Car as Art January 20-March 11 Young Artists of Kalamazoo County March 17-April 7 2007 High School Area Show April 14-May 6 2007 West Michigan Area Show March 24-May 6 Lorna Simpson May 25-August 19 2007-2008 Exhibitions from the KIA permanent collection Silk Road to Clipper Ship: Trade, Changing Markets, and East Asian Ceramics September 8-November 25 From Fish to Fowl: Animals in Art September-November, 2006 Gus Foster and Ando Hiroshige: The Tokaido Road September 8-December 2 Kalamazoo Collects December 8-January 13 Warhol, Chihuly and Others: Showcasing New KIA Acquisitions December 8-January 27 Jacob Lawrence January 26-April 20 KIA Faculty Show February 2-March 16 Young Artists of Kalamazoo County March 29-April 20 2008 High School Area Show April 26-May 18 The Figure Revealed: Contemporary American Figurative Paintings and Drawings May 3-June 29 A Corporate Wasteland: Photographs by David Lewis May 31-July 26 Perspectives on Place: Artists’ Visions of Michigan’s Land and Lakes June 6-September 7 2008 West Michigan Area Show July 12-August 23 Master Drawings November 2006-February 2007 Humor and Satire: Prints, Drawings, and Paintings February-April, 2007 The Human Face: Portraits in Photography May-August, 2007 Views and Vistas September-November, 2007 New KIA Acquisitions: Photography December 2007-February 2008 Sight Unseen: Rarely Exhibited Works from the Permanent Collection February-May, 2008 A Curator’s Choice: Works on Paper May-September, 2008 Area Show Acquisitions August, 2008 •3 4ACQUISITIONS In reflecting upon the breadth and strengths of the KIA’s collection, a concerted effort was made between 2006 and 2008 to select works that would enrich our collection holdings. One of the acquisition highlights from this period is the Egyptian Blue Jazz Bowl with Flared Rim by Viktor Schreckengost. Originally commissioned by Eleanor Roosevelt, the bowl captures the nervous energy of New York nightlife and has become regarded as one of the icons of American Art Deco. A generous gift allowed the KIA to purchase the entire series of 22 screenprints of the Legend of John Brown by Jacob Lawrence. The series was enjoyed by thousands of visitors in 2008 during the Jacob Lawrence exhibition. Another gift—a selection of early 20th-century mosaic works by Louis Comfort Tiffany—greatly enhanced the decorative arts collection at 36 the KIA. Using acquisition funds, the collection was further enhanced by the purchase of four glass vases by Tiffany. The purchase of a Chinese Junyao spalshed bowl from the Song/Jin Dynasty (900-1289 CE) is an important addition to our growing Asian art collection. Several significant paintings from the 19th and 20th centuries have also come into the collection. Art Students, by Philip Leslie Hale and Symphony by Robert Goodnough were donated to the KIA. Through museum acquisition funds, we purchased Sunset by Dwight William Tryon and Union Army Encampment by Johann Mongels Culverhouse. In photography, the museum received an important donation of 13 photogravures by Edward Curtis. Taken around 1907, the images preserve traditional Native American ways of life and dress. Other photographs acquired include gelatin silver prints by George Platt Lynes, Charles Moore, Jan Saudek and Marion Post Wolcott. The new print acquisitions cover a wide range of time periods and styles. We augmented our collection with several old master prints by such artists as Albrecht Dürer, Annibale Carracci, Giovanni Battista Piranesi and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. We also added a late-19thcentury print by Henri Rousseau. The KIA continues to acquire works by notable African-American artists. Prints and drawings by such artists as Romare Bearden, Elizabeth Catlett, Jacob Lawrence and Charles White have strengthened the collection holdings. In addition, we supplemented our contemporary print collection with works by Chuck Close and Jim Dine. The collection, used for exhibitions and teaching purposes, is a significant asset to the museum, the school and the community. The KIA remains committed to adding new works to its permanent collection and we are most grateful to those who have contributed to the acquisition of works of art. •4 PAINTINGS Archie Batten, Contemporary American, Hugin and Munin, 2007, oil and latex on board. But as financial challenges in the schools and Kalamazoo community at-large continued to affect tour and program attendance, Museum Education sought ways to attract new audiences, particularly preschoolers and senior citizens. Museum Education launched Preschool Discovery tours, featuring a short themed-based tour, storybook and optional art project. Senior Days (artist demonstrations, lectures and guided tours of special exhibitions) grew to four programs a year. We also added Appraisal Day in 2007 which fulfilled two goals: increasing art awareness and raising funds to support Museum Education programs. Our version of “Antiques Roadshow” was a highlight of the year. Both years brought thought-provoking exhibitions. KIA docents and visitors alike stretched their artistic wings with some non-traditional exhibitions, including The Car as Art and Parallel Worlds: SmallScale Houses and Miniatures. They traveled the world through art with Magic and Intrigue: Masks of Mexico, Silk Road to Clipper Ship: Trade, Changing Markets and East Asian Ceramics as well as Gus Foster and Ando Hiroshige: The Tokaido Road. American artists were also celebrated with Lorna Simpson, Jacob Lawrence and The Figure Revealed: Contemporary American Figurative Paintings and Drawings. Special educator packets were developed for the Jacob Lawrence, Lorna Simpson and Tokaido Road/Silk Road exhibitions. Other projects included A to Z Art Cards, a series of 26 art exploration cards that assist young families in looking at the KIA collection. An upper elementary/middle school version called Hangin’ Out at the KIA is now also available, and a new docent class graduated in June 2008. Community collaborations continued and strengthened over the past two years. In collaboration with the Kalamazoo Public Library and KRESA/EFA, Teen Halloween featured a reader’s theater of Edgar Allen Poe stories, film clips from classic horror films, a costume contest and dance party. The Teen Filmmaker Festival added a new partner, Community Access Center, and the event continues to draw record numbers of entries and attendees. Another new partner was Fire Gallery who co-hosted a spoken word event for Lorna Simpson. With our community partners, Museum Education continues to bring a wide variety of arts programs to our patrons. OUTREACH PROGRAMS TOURS AND MUSEUM PROGRAMS 2006-2007 Visitors and tours Outreach Coordinator Amy Lehman, Outreach Exhibition Installer Wade McDonald, and 24 KIA-trained program presenters brought outreach programs and traveling exhibitions to an audience of 32,584 youth and adults in southwest Michigan. Art Resources to Schools (ARTS) offered six different classroom programs to schools and organizations including Africa: A Continent Speaks, El Mercado, Circle of Life: Native American Art, Artists Tell the Story of Michigan, and an eight-part Art History Series. A special program, Where in the World?, was developed for libraries and preschool groups. Twenty-four presenters brought 125 ARTS programs to an audience of 3,564 at 34 venues in six counties. Fifteen different ARTreach exhibitions, many with Teacher Resource Kits, were installed at 42 sites in seven counties and seen by 29,020 viewers. 2007-2008 During the final year of the Outreach Program, Museum Education staff coordinated grant-funded ARTS and ARTreach programs following the elimination of the Outreach Coordinator and Installer positions. Greg Waskowsky, Outreach Curator, installed ARTreach exhibitions and experienced presenters provided ARTS programs in area classrooms. Outreach audience totaled 25,612. One hundred and eight ARTS programs were presented to an audience of 4,312 in five counties. Seven teacher resource kits were rented for classroom use. Twelve ARTreach exhibitions were installed at 40 sites in seven counties and viewed by 21,300. 2006-07 Adults 351 College 601 Middle/High School 586 Elementary 900 Preschool 62 ARTist program 2,110 ARTour (fee) 109 Other tours 2,158 Drop-ins/Special events 1,295 2007-08 554 381 416 1,152 180 1,554 246 2,045 1,004 Total Number of Tours 8,172 260 7,532 301 Programs 2006-07 2,782 567 396 314 4,086 2007-08 2,816 845 296 417 3,979 ARTbreak Sunday Funday (4) Senior Day (4) Docent programs Other programs Total program/tour attendance 16,317 15,885 174 4GALLERY SHOP The KIA Gallery Shop continued its commitment to providing the community with excellent customer service and product selection. Working with more than 35 local artists, the Gallery Shop provides a retail outlet for these artists and a resource to the community to support locally made products. Each product selected for the shop, whether a simple note card or a beautiful ceramic bowl, reflects the KIA’s exhibitions and educational mission. The Gallery Shop held several special events including Art from the Earth: A Showcase of Local Artists, once again giving local artists the opportunity to market their work to a larger of section of the community. 4LIBRARY 2006-07 A variety of groups visited the Library, including KIA art school classes, preschool tour groups and art teachers. The Library participated in Kalamazoo Public Library’s TV Turnoff Week in April with “Stories Unplugged,” a story-telling and music program. The Library subscribed to AskArt.com and ArtPrice.com, electronic databases containing artist and art auction information, and upgraded its computerized catalog system. Nearly 250 new book and video/DVD titles were added to the library collection through purchase and donation; 4,402 patrons visited the library, checking out 1,575 items. 2007-08 Twelve groups including KIA art school classes, preschool tour groups, and teachers visited the Library. The librarian conducted story time programs following the downtown Holiday Parade Day, and in conjunction with the exhibition Perspectives on Place in July. A new, combined Library/Membership card was created and distributed to all 318 KIA members. Research tools, including a list of KIA exhibitions and a list of artist files, were created and added to the Library website. Research using electronic resources has increased (AskArt. com by nearly 100%), and the library now provides a link to CAMIO (available via the Michigan E-Library), a database of digital art images. More than 300 book and video/DVD titles were added to the library collections; 3,827 patrons visited the library, checking out 1,601 items. The Library offered books along with prints from vintage books for sale at the Holiday Sale and annual Library Book Sale at the KIA Art Fair. 4KALAMAZOO ART LEAGUE The Kalamazoo Art League provides art enrichment for adults with a lecture series, trips to other art museums, a book discussion group and other events. The efforts of its four-member staff provided vital support. This support took the form of raising increasing contributions, maintaining one of the largest membership bases among Michigan art museums, recruiting and deploying hundreds of volunteers, and continuing a planned giving service. Fundraising Fundraising activities secured contributions in three areas: Annual Fund gifts, corporate, government and foundation grants, and individual gifts. The Annual Fund campaign brought in record revenues. During 2006-08, about 1 in 5 KIA members contributed to Annual Fund campaigns, donating an average of $323 per contribution. Such generosity, combined with increased membership, resulted in the most successful Annual Fund campaign to date. The most dramatic leap occurred in 2006-07, when contribution revenues increased 22% over the previous year. Corporate, government and foundation cash contributions realized dramatic 120% growth during this two-year period – 322 despite a 38% decrease in annual arts grant support from the state of Michigan over the same period. print and broadcast advertising, equipment, printing, parking and other services. During 2006-07, revenues from 51 sources totaled about $610,000. They represented a large increase over 2005-06 revenues, thanks to a major grant from the Irving S. Gilmore Foundation to fund the KIA’s next biennial major ticketed exhibition. Other major supporters were Pfizer, National City (now a part of PNC), Stryker, plus the Irving S. Gilmore Foundation, the Dorothy U. Dalton Foundation, the Harold and Grace Upjohn Foundation, and the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. Additional major grants were also generously awarded by new KIA supporters, namely the Santreece Foundation, the Monroe-Brown Foundation, the Richard & Jane Manoogian Foundation, and the Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts. Meanwhile, individual contributions also saw increases that kept pace with those from corporate, government and foundation supporters. In 2005-06, individuals gave $15,486 as gifts, sponsorships and special contributions. In 2007-08, they gave two times that amount. In 2007-08, 53 corporate, government, and foundation contributions totaled $418,313. Major supporters were again Pfizer, National City (now a part of PNC), Stryker, plus the Irving S. Gilmore Foundation, the Dorothy U. Dalton Foundation, the Harold and Grace Upjohn Foundation, and the Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural Affairs. New major support came from Kellogg’s Corporate Citizenship Fund, the Diane Robertson Charitable Foundation, the Michigan Humanities Council, and the National Endowment for the Arts, which awarded its first grant to the KIA to help fund the presentation of The Figure Revealed exhibition in Spring 2008. Other companies provided noncash contributions that offset expenses. They took the form of food for receptions and events, Most Development Department contributions were secured through efforts that entailed submitting grant proposals, sponsorship requests, donation appeals or fundraising events, which range from hosting dinners to conducting the annual KIA Art Fair. In 2007-08, the KIA stepped up its fundraising event efforts. It staged three new events, the most successful of which was the Ladies Night Out & Fashion Show in March 2008. Volunteering The KIA is proud to be supported by a large and active corps of volunteers. They assist in all facets of our operation, including reception, mailing, Gallery Shop sales, exhibition support, museum education, and special-events planning and production. More than 30 priority mailers processed some 100,000 pieces of mail in the last two fiscal years. In the Corporate Art program, 28 volunteers either selected or delivered works of art to more than 50 businesses. A committee of nine people organized the popular, six-times-a-year Art & All That Jazz series. Members of the Hospitality Committee – all of them volunteers – served food and beverages at a few dozen receptions. Among special events, the 2006 Art & Antique Auction owed much of its success to 22 volunteers who planned and executed it, as well as to the additional 16 volunteers who assisted at the event. A committee of eight volunteers staged the first Ladies Night Out & Fashion Show, which attracted a sell-out audience of more than 300 for a show featuring some 40 volunteer models. For the 56th and 57th annual KIA Art Fairs, a 25-member committee recruited and deployed more than 200 volunteers each year. Planned giving Membership in the KIA’s planned giving program, called The 1924 Society, remained at 41 individuals or households. Meanwhile, staff members worked to raise awareness to the society, which is open to anyone who includes the KIA in his or her estate plan. During the two fiscal years, it held several events, including December receptions held in conjunction with The Car as Art and Kalamazoo Collects exhibitions. Articles appeared in Sightlines, a new planned giving brochure was printed and distributed, and a board member survey was conducted to recruit new members. 234 4INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS Director’s Circle Visionary $5000 and above Susan & Jon Bowers Rosemary & John Brown Muriel & David Gregg Richard Groos Donna & Thomas Lambert Pamela & Thomas Mansager Barbara & William U. In addition to managing marketing and public relations efforts, the department is now responsible for all technology-related equipment and activities at the KIA. A new committee, made up of KIA board members and community representatives, advises the department on both marketing and technology issues. A vigorous media relations approach yielded favorable coverage about KIA programs, people and events in both local and farflung media, including Antique Week, Art Daily, Battle Creek Enquirer, Chicago Reader, Chicago Tribune, Grand Rapids Business Journal, Grand Rapids Press, Herald-Palladium, Holland Sentinel, Japan-America Society, Lansing State Journal, Michigan Radio, Midwest Living, Nueva Opinión, Ohio Magazine, South Bend Tribune, Time Out Chicago, U.S. Auto Scene, WJR Radio, WOOD-TV and WXMI-TV. The KIA helped identify and market to targeted audiences for specific programs – for example, the African-American community for the Lorna Simpson and Jacob Lawrence exhibitions; the Japanese-American community for Silk Road and Tokaido Road; the Hispanic community for Mexican Masks; car aficionados for The Car as Art; and area educators for Teen Filmmaker Festival and the High School Area Show. A number of media sponsorships helped keep costs under control without compromising media reach. The KIA upgraded its phone system, a project that included digital service and installation of new handsets throughout the facility. The KIA began work on a complete overhaul of its website, designed to enhance both its visual appeal and functionality. The Car as Art Now through March 11 314 South Park Street, Kalamazoo • 269.349.7775 • www.kiarts.org 334 Sponsored by: 4FINANCES The KIA is fortunate to have dedicated volunteers serving on two committees of the Board. The Finance Committee scrutinizes the annual budget proposal and recommends to the Board. Additionally, it reviews actual operating performance relative to budget throughout the year and reports to the Board. The Endowment Committee reviews the investment performance of endowed funds, recommends the annual draw and makes major policy recommendations to the Board. Jointly the committees receive the report of audited financial statements and report the results to the Board.
